computer monitors
Any opinions on what the best type of monitor is for this work? I have a 17 inch flat panel--thinking about "upgrading"--is bigger necessarily better? What is the "easiest" on the eyes--or what can you add to the monitor to make it easier on the eyes?? thanks for any tips!
Can you hook up two monitors to your computer? sm
That way, you can have the labs screen up all the time on the right screen while you are transcribing on the left screen. Then when you need to copy lab values, they are right there for you to read and type or copy and paste.
Is it possible to use 2 separate monitors with just one computer?
I'd have two monitors but only one computer. I guess there would have to be somewhere to plug it in...and I only see one place to plug in a monitor but was hoping someone knew of some kind of adapter or a way to get around this? Thanks!!
In old days no computer, no Google, had to spell all those longgggg words
We best know how to spell or we did not work in this field.
New dell or refurbished
why would you need to install a video card if you bought a new dell? no need to reply just curious
anyone tried the refurbished Tracfone?

I bought a refurbished (sm)
It is a e-machine rebuilt all new inside and out... Athion 64 3200+/512 MG DDR/ 160GB HDD with DVD/RW dual layer/flash media reader, AI Radeon Xpress 200 video, 10-100 Mbps LAN/ Windows XP home with both Norton or McAfee built in so you can choose. #399.99 plus shipping & handing... A computer tech said he has 12 of them for his businesses, wouldn't spend the money on a new computer because it isn't the name it is the upgraded equipment inside that wooed him. try tigerdirect.com
I'm a big fan of refurbished computers too
I would never buy a new computer again. The only downside that I can see is that they don't give you the operating system CDs so if you run into trouble and have to insert the original OS CD, you are out of luck.
I bought a refurbished one
about 3 years ago from overstock.com and it's still going strong. It's my main work computer. I don't buy new computers anymore. I've had better luck with the refurbished ones, which also come with substantially less junk software.
I bought a refurbished eMachine for DD in college, works great. nm

I've purchased one laptop and one desktop system used/refurbished, sm
...both from that place I mentioned, and you wouldn't know them from used. I used the laptop happily for many years (still have it, though it's quite out of date now), and the PC is going on it's 2nd year with no problems. You do have to be careful when buying used, but if you're dealing with a reputable site that has a good rep, it's usually not a problem at all and the savings can be tremendous.
2 monitors
I have the 2 monitor set up (also Dell) and LOVE IT. Just like you said, use one for work and the other for references. That way, don't have to get out of the typing screen I'm in. I have 2 desks though and one is a quite large computer desk. But it doesn't take up that much space.
Two monitors
I was just using two monitors and I didn't have to switch back and forth. I just turned on each monitor at its respective switch. My son is a graphic designer and uses two monitors and he said that some CPU's have a port for more than one monitor, it depends on your mother board. Sounds like a tech question to me. I would ask the guys at the geek squad when you go to Best Buy.
monitors
If your computer has extra ports to put additional "cards" in, then you can get a dual monitor monitor card and plug both monitors in that way. You don't need a switch of any sort.
Who monitors this site?
I am sorry, I was under the impression this was a site meant to be helpful to MTs by providing information and resources. That was what I was searching for anyway when I happened upon this site this morning. Maybe I just happened to pick the wrong day for a first visit or maybe a lot of people are just having a bad day because with the exception of a few posts I have read (I am sure there are a lot of nice people that visit this site, but apparently not very many today) the majority I have seen displayed here are filled with hateful criticism and vicious remarks towards others. How sad that people can be so cruel to one another and how one sidedness can still show its ugliness in this modern day and age so that people look down their nose at a way of life because it is different. We may not all agree on what to eat, wear or live in but a difference of opinion should never turn vicious and hurtful towards someone because their choice may be different from your own. Without variety the world be boring and cruel remarks only come from ignorance which leaves me to say this. I may prefer to live in a house but I would rather live next door to someone in trailer who knows how to respect others than next door to someone in an expensive house that lets ignorance dictate how they treat others.
HP and Dell monitors
I have an HP f1903 LCD that I love so much that I bought DH the new model for Christmas, the HP f1905. It is not nearly as nice. I also have a new Dell 19 inch LCD that is a little better than the HP f1905 for text but not nearly as (no way close!) good as the HP F1903. So, I'd say go to the stores and look at the text quality of any LCD monitor -- they can be drastically different from model to model.
I love my Microsoft Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0. It uses double or triple A batteries but I don't change it that often. I also have a Logitech wireless mouse that is very nice, doesn't need batteries (which can be a drawback if you forget to recharge the unit) but tends to freeze on my system.
Monitors and Mouse
I have two flat panel monitors side by side - connected to each other - one is a 21", the other a 19".. its like having one hugh gigantic TV screen - you can drag from one monitor to the other, you can have your email up and running on one, your work on one, etc......watching the work upload as you continue along your merry way. They are both from Dell, one is a Dell Brand, the other one is a Planar. I think its worth the investment, NO MORE GLARE and so easy on your eyes versus the big ole clunkers. and a 15" flat panel is exactly the same viewing as one of those big old 17-19" cluunkers that take up so much space.
Regarding wireless mouse/keyboard, i type non-stop almost 12 hours a day and I rarely have to replace the batteries - I use the Microsoft ergonomic wireless keyboard/mouse.
Vert/horiz monitors
I'm shopping around for a new flat panel monitor screen, 17" to 20". Anyone experienced with horizontal/vertical screens? Appreciate some feed back if this is worthwhile in our field.
What monitors do you guys prefer?
Hi all!! I am new here and am getting the feel of things. I was wanting an opinion. I am looking into buying me a new monitor and looking at LCDs. Which is better on the eyes or which do you prefer and why? I have been told 17" is better because 19" stretches things to make them fit. Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Cindy
? switching monitors to flat panel sm
I have ordered a flat screen monitor from Dell and will be switching from a 14 inch dinosaur to a 17 inch flat screen on an Acer tower. I just wonder if I am going to have problems or does it "adjust itself" without problems. Need more desk space. TIA

Yep, google has it goin on... I really like the google earth...
Have you tried Google earth? You can type in any address, street, city, state, country, etc. and it will zoom in and show the area and then you can hit the + button and zoom right in and see the exact house, building, etc. that you are looking for.
Mainly Google; I google the known words in the phrase (sm)
That's my most frequent tactic if I don't find the word in my word books. I'll play with leaving certain words out and adding them in, in various combinations, to try to get a hit that has a word which sounds like my blank. If I get a hit, I'll Google WITH that word, and see what hits I get, and what their source is (i.e.,checking the sources out for reliability). When I say 5 sites or searches, I mean I don't often try more than 5 different combinations without a serious hit. If I get a hit, then I will spend a little more time checking that out before I give up.
If it's a drug name, I use RxList, or more frequently the Drugs.com website. Since they redid RxList, I haven't found one that has quite as good a wildcard search, but Drugs.com works okay most of the time.
If it's a place name (like when they give names of outlying outreach clinics and etc.) I'll use Mapquest and look up the city my hospital is in, then "pan out" and look at the outlying towns.
Hope that's what you're looking for. I do have bookmarks, but I find that even the ones I think I'll visit again, I waste more time doing that than with an intelligent google search. An example is the time I was looking for "banana bag." The only place I managed to find it with a degree of reliability was on a nurses' message board. I've found quite a bit sometimes on the various specialty message boards out there, but I think the quickest way to locate that is through a search engine rather than bookmarking each individual site and trying to figure out which ones to search for a particular term.
Oops. What software do I install. Sorry to seem so stupid. I have the old style monitors and I just
plug them in.
Some people like to keep a Time Clock thing showing on their monitors, too. But

Is it their computer? Why are they installing a firewall and autocorrect on your computer? That sm
is usually the responsibility of the transcriptionist, especially if an IC or SE. Which company?
Question about transfering computer into to another computer.. sm
I have a dumb question - Just bought a new computer and someone told me to get a flash drive to transfer all my info. But I'm assuming that ExText that I work off of and Escription will have to be downloaded again by the tech people onto my new computer. I can tranfer these can I?
Thanks
How does one find out the computer specs on my computer?
I should know this, but I just don't remember how to do this. I am hoping I have enough RAM, or whatever, to load work platform on my own computer and begin working on it, rather than paying *rent* on the company-furnished computer. Thanks so much.
A computer is a computer, whether it be laptop or desktop.
I have both and use both and I bought both of mine...most companies do not provide computers...
Computer Generated Image or Computer graphic image
If the OP had done a google, she would have...
SEEN the answer to her question. People need to learn how to fish for themselves. Giving quick answers doesn't teach them a thing, and it certainly doesn't help them in the long run. I'm not trying to berate you for offering an answer, so please don't be offended. It is just that learning/knowing how to effectively research is a VERY important part of being an efficient and good MT.
google.com
Tia,
use www.google.com as a search engine (the best) type in exactly what you are looking for and see what you get- if you don't find exactly what you are looking for- keep searching but slightly change the search phrase.
I did google them and they are
still around $600. That is out of my price range right now. Maybe someday...
google map
yep, a totally new addiction. I entered my nephews addy and just realized he is only 3.5 miles from the White House! No wonder I kept seeing the Washington Monument every time we got on that nightmare highway system
Go look at your favorite amusement park like Cedar Point in Ohio...you can actually see the roller coasters in 3D!
Google? If Google, just go to google.com
and download their toolbar. They usually have several options! Happy Googling. If its goggling, I can't help you!
Google
Merry Christmas, everyone!
Could anyone explain the Google page to me? I mean the "Google" header with the cat and mouse. I usually enjoy their little embellishments for the different holidays, but I can't figure out what this is supposed to be.
I had to Google your
phrase, as I was not familiar with it. Now that I know, all I have to say is...'I resemble that remark'...
That is a Google ad.

You are probably trying Google..

Does anyone know of a site like Google that transcrptionists can use for researching. I have always used Google, but lately it seems to be getting slower and slower, plus they have a Pop-Up status on that is driving me crazy and can't get rid of.
TIA
Google
Google "radiology terminology" and you will get some sites.
I've had the book Stedman's Radiology and Oncolocy Words for over a decade and it's my bible. There are newer editions. When in doubt in the middle of a report, I Google the word/phrase/drug I'm looking for if it isn't in Stedman's.
Good luck!
Google
I found my current job with a small MTSO by a Google search for "medical transcription" followed by my state.
I went on google and put in--
complaint form sample and it came up with all kinds of things. some of them you pay for, others you don't. you just have to read and find what is right for you. good luck!
google
I use Google and mine seems fine.
Google.
I typed in Lanier LX-219-1 with VTI and got lots of hits. You should be able to find something.
Google it.
