Geez I was making $20 an hour after 1 week as a newbie and now

average $30-$35 an hour. I transcribe 2000 lines a day acute care in no more than 6-7 hours a day. I refuse to work for these companies that expect you to actually transcribe 8 hours!! Talk about a quick burnout!!

You have to find the right company, account, and platform. Simple as that. Well I should not say simple, it definitely takes some digging these days..

Geez, you're just making this too easy!

I worked for yeeears for a company where I was the primary MT on the account.  I produced what they considered to full-time MTs (no bennies except taxes being cut and matched).  I earned $4000/month.  I later went to work in the office and happened to see an invoice to the client.  I did the math and I realized they were clearing an additional $4000/month just based on my production.  So they were making twice again as much as what they paid me.Was I immature enough to think I DESERVED MORE?  No!

I had a good gig and I knew it.  I knew how valuable I was to both the client and the MTSO.  I knew how long I had worked this account, how certain doctors would only accept my work, how many of those doctors seeing my work at the hospital went back to their practices and signed on with that MTSO because of the quality of my work increasing the MTSO's business in the process.  I was loyal to them  and they were loyal to me.  On the 3 occasions I ran out of work, they paid me 2 weeks pay just so I wouldn't take a job somewhere else.

But let's analyze this since you seem you jumped on my wardrobe size.

First you need to understand this is a country where capitalism is own of its primary foundation.  Next you need to understand that out of that profit, the owner had to pay herself (how many times did she call me for help at 11:00 on a Saturday or Sunday because people bailed on her and she had alread worked 20 hours that day and just needed someone who would help her out?).  In addition to having to do MT work, she had a business to run.  That means maintaining good will.  You know, visiting your clients, checking in to see how things are, what can we do for you...in other words, being the marketing person also.  And god forbid she have a private life.!  She had to pay an office manager to manage all the qurky personalities of the at-home MTs, the daily vascillating work flow, putting out fires and preventing them, etc.  Next she had to pay her bookkeeper because god forbid anyone's paycheck was late or incorrect.  Then she had to pay a computer tech to help set up the new MTs, manage computer issues, make sure all the clients got their work, set up new clients, maintained the ASP, etc.  She also had to pay the in-house MTs.  She had to pay her accountant to make sure the books were in proper order and do yearly taxes, keep up with adding new state taxes to the computer when she hired an MT from another state.

She had to pay rent, electricity, phones, toll free lines for all her long-distance MTs, liability insurance, provide computers sometimes with no notice because someone's computer died overnight and she couldn't afford down time for that MT or the client, provide computer equipment for the client's, provide C-phones and Lanier stations, pay someone to clean the office twice a week...

Is the big picture a little more clear?  Where does this new-age feeling of entitlement come from?  Geesh, am I the only one on this site who can remember trying to pick 100 lbs of cotton in a day and feeling satisfied if I got near that figure?  And I'm in my 40s!

The world doesn't owe you anything.  It was here first.

At 200 lines a day for 6 cents, you are making $1.20 a day or 0.15 hour for an 8 hour day!!!--cm
Did you mean 2,000? Even then you would only be making $1.50 if you work 8 hours a day.
Anyone here making 0.075 cpl and 30.00 an hour?

Is this possible?  Compensation for higher production adds a penny more or so.

My gosh!! How is it that you are making less than $10/hour - sm
are you new?? Who are you working for? Do you use expanders???
The OP said she is happy making $11.50 an hour.
I don't think the dollar amount you make is the point she was trying to get across. I think it's all the complaining people do instead of looking at the positive aspects of MTing. I could work for 11.50 an hour because I have a husband who makes a good living. I haven't made 11.50 an hour for about 20 years.
Come back east, I'm making 17 per hour and for 300,000 you get a

Making less per hour in 2009 than in 2003

I have a part time job of 30 hours/week and a doctor account part time.

On my doctor account, I am paid per report and get to use a lot of templates.  It is common to get 9 second dictation jobs, just fill in patient name and dates, save and close.  I still make $30/hr for this.

On my other job, I am on a very user friendly platform, produce clinic work at 8 cpl, everything over the internet, and make $20/hr.

Just a few years ago, I was on a platform just a couple hours a day making about $25/hr and the rest of my time was working in a DOS environment.  I never, ever worked more than 6 hours a day (sometimes less) and my 2-week check was over $1400, averaging over $26/hr.

I'm older now and have to work an extra two hours a day 5 days a week to earn the same money.  It is no wonder people are leaving this industry in droves.  I still have another 6 years before my youngest doesn't need daycare so I can get a job outside the home, so I need to make MT work for me, but wow am I getting tired of hitting the keyboard.  I've been in front of a computer for 30 years now.  Now that I have passed all my other bottom lines, I wonder how much longer I can last before I really will leave.  I have always said that if I can't make $20/hr Txing then it is time to find something else to do. I know a lot of people would love to earn what I do, a lot of fresher, younger people would, and I don't mean to sound ungrateful.  Just hope my body and mind last a few more years.

I'm making less per hour in 2009 than in 1979!
In 1977/78, I made 6 cpl. at a transcription company. Had full medical benefits, paid sick days, a cushy, comfortable office, and monthly CASH (like, real paper dollars!) bonuses for 'Transcriber of the Month'. Of course, back in 1977, I could fill a 20-plus gallon gas tank for just under $18-20, too.

40 hour week
I was told by my supervisor to "work off the clock" as much as I needed to get my quota.

I remember being told several times in the past that this was NOT allowed. Of course, it is okay now as it is only paid as line count and not OT.
At a 40-hour week (sm)

What did you think I meant?

Happy MT week.

BS pure and simple. Nobody and I mean NOBODY is making $36/hour in this profession.

I have almost 20 years experience and the best I can do on a good day where I have few interruptions and have been chained to my PC for 8 straight hours I can make $20 per hour, MAYBE $25 but that is pushing it.  And I have my own accounts and have used my Expander to death.

Is this Sally Struthers?

how many lines per hour/day/week do you do?? NM
???
Hired to work 40 hour week, 9-5 and then...
Then your computer goes down or you have a doctor's appt or a responsibility taking you away from the keyboard. The other two MTs on your acct have to work like crazy to keep up with a 3 MT work load and they do so like champs. Then, back you come and grab work off your schedule. This means the two MTs who covered you while you were off are not going to be compensated for working strenuously but instead, end up sharing their shifts work with you.

This is soooo frustrating.
Do all MT employees have to abide by 40-hour week law? Always been a SE

Lines typed an hour or a week?

I know this has been talked about a lot, but I was offered a chance to test for an IC job, and I'm required to type between 2,500-5,000 lines per week.  Since I'm an employee and haven't been paid by the line for about five years, approximately how many hours does it usually take for some of you to type 2,500 lines per week?

TIA.

my friend just finished her BSN 2 years ago, working 32 hr/week making $60K with benefits nm

I have 13 years experience and just started a hospital job working from home making $16 an hour

and with a really good incentive plan.  I live in the Kansas City area.  $10 seems like a low starting point even with only two years experience which is the usual benchmark for hospital MT jobs.

It's been my experience that the low end of the pay scale for hospital employed MTs was around $12 an hour.  Also, it's been my experience that the pay offered is usually based on years of experience and how well you perform on the transcription test.

I would say if their pay is that low, they should at least be making it up with incentive and it doesn't sound like they are.

Working 6/hour days, 5 days/week I make
$42,000.00, but the work is there to make more if I want to.  I'm in the southeast.
Is there engineer week? Astronaut week? Veterinarian week?
x
sure i was. i'm making fun of the people who are making a case for background checks, etc
to do medical transcription at home as if they may do something AWFUL with the info they receive. So if you want an invasion of privacy let's REALLY invade it and make sure fat chicks don't transcribe because they are so busy eating they can't get the work done, they mess up the keyboard with food and if they are provided health insurance they will raise the rates for the company sky high because their health risks are higher than others. Then there are the psychological issues overweight people bring to the table. After we eliminate fat people, we can go on to eliminate diabetic people who may have low blood sugar while typing and go into a spell and type the wrong thing. I could go on and on through the process of elimination. How about prescribed medications that may cloud your thinking? So you take Ambien to sleep but you have an Ambien groggy hangover when you are transcribing? Should they transcribe. How about your teens are on your last nerves and you take a Xanax? Should you be allowed to transcribe?
Depends on the pay and account. My lowest average is $15.52 an hour (roughly 182.6 lines an hour) w
;'
1850 lines per 8 hour shift. 15.00 hour - no real requirement

Typically this week is a slow week in lots of places

because it is a big vacation week.  Typically things slow dow a bit in the summer too because people are putting off elective surgery, but at the same time lots of people going on vacation so it should balance out.

Lowest runs $900 week, highest $1400 week (sm)
Get paid 12 CPL. Been doing transcription for about 12 years.
if it is feasable, split that 6-hour shift into two 3-hour shifts. sm
i work a split shift and find that i am much better able to stay focused and get more work done that way. also, being 3 months pregnant you have gone through the very tiring time of pregnancy and you should start seeing an energy perk before long.
I start an hour or 2 early and then take an hour or 2 for dinner -nm

$32/hour? You said $36/hour on an earlier post. Either way would be great. n/m

You realize by doing that they're making more money & you're making less? You should reconsid

I work 6 days a week every other week

Due to my company's payroll (it runs Sun-Sat), I'm able to work a rotating schedule with every other weekend off. Week 1 I work Sunday through Thursday with Fri, Sat, Sun off.  Week 2 I work Monday through Friday with Saturday only off.  Then I'm back to week 1 and get that following weekend off.

I've found that I'm more productive with shorter shifts and I have kids in school anyway, so I work a lot of split shifts during the week.  If possible, you might want to consider cutting back your hours to 30 hours and just work five 6-hour days in split shifts, 3 in the morning and 3 in the evening.

10 reports/hour or 25 markers/hour

Ah geez (sm)
Well, that's what I get for trying to insert my own images  Just use your imagination.  *sigh*
Geez
By saying it was the way they talk I meant with an accent on the word as not all doctors say it that way. I was just trying to help and gave more information than some and do not appreciate the way people are sometimes treated on here.
to oh geez
Here here sister!!!!
Geez, the pay keeps going down. SM
Just saw an ad on the MT Jobs board for an experienced Transcriptionist (of course, they want the best) and the pay is 8 cpl for a 75 character line.  What's with these companies?
geez
get a life. don't you have some work to do, or something?
Um, geez
I authored the message you responded to, and nowhere did I mention a personal preference for healthcare in Canada, or any other country for that matter. Yes, I posted a list from WHO that ranks healthcare among participating countries. Yes, Canada is on that list, but was the furthest thing from my mind when I copied and pasted that list into my post. Honestly, I don't find 30th place to be notably better than 37th place.

That said, I would love to visit Canada some day, but for healthcare I would seriously consider France (if it were an option for me, which it is not . . . nor is it necessary at this stage of the game).

Now, I have a question for you . . . How would you like to die, or even JUST suffer in pain, on the floor of the ER floor while a janitor mops around you (saw the video of that with my own eyes) and while two people have to call 911 in a futile attempt to save your life because nobody in the ER will care for you?
Oh geez, she's at it again.

GEEZ
what the heck is wrong with you?  If she is an IC she is not cheating or scamming.  And even if she is an employee, how would that be scamming and cheating.  Did she says she is falsifying records?  You have absolutely no information to base these accusations on.  Man, talk about jumping to conclusions!
OH GEEZ
lEgitimate oh so sorry. Please, please, review all my other posts. God knows I should not err.

The problem with these boards is that someone wants to discuss something and someone else just wants to nitpick.
Geez, here we go! nm
x
oh geez....
We had a doc that when he said right colectomy, it sounded just like rectalectomy. If I was daydreaming I would transcribe rectalectomy but would always catch myself...except for once. I got his DS when he dictated it and he said "procedures done....rectalectomy...what the heck is that?" I knew I had made the mistake. To my knowledge, he never sent it back because I never heard about it. He must have just written through it. I could have just died!!
geez

Haaaaaa.  Just awful.  I had one where VR picked up:  The patient's blood pressure is at SCHOOL today.

Should have been:  The patient's blood pressure is at GOAL today.

LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

I meant the other way around! GEEZ

geez, you seem so hostile!

Geez, sounds like just about everyone I know!

Oh, geez! Too funny!
My house has a shortage of coffee filters all the time, so I never use those.  I like that Homestyle microwave popcorn made with real butter, but my fingers get so greasy that I have to keep a wet washcloth on the desk to wipe it off between typing.  I'm going to have to try your idea, though.
geez louise
If you're doing all that and with two jobs, I have a couple questions for you.  How the heck do you do it?  Whats your secret?  Do you get hand and arm pain whatsover???  You're doing a lot of lines.  How do you do it?
