I also do tapes which are horrible so I'm considering upping my line rate especially if all this aggravation keeps up. When I first took the work, I thought I was being fair because the work was so easy, but then they asked me to do tapes and then work specific hours, print and deliver work three times a week. I wish I would have addressed more than TAT and line rate in the original contract. I do charge them a $5 per delivery fee because of gas prices, but still I think I'm getting the shaft.
Oh well, live and learn. I am negotiating for a local doctor's office here in my hometown, small one doctor office, and I'm here to tell you I will be negotiated every little detail right down to paper and toner charges!

I get plenty of the stinkers, just like we all do. The accounts I don't share, and sometimes dread, are often short reports filled with lots of dead air in the sound file. They are also 90% ESLs. So don't think I skim off the cream. I don't.
I'm just saying it is impossible to cherry pick an account of all good dictators.
I work my butt off to make it. I'm not sitting here taking only the "good stuff" and leaving the crud for other MTs.

I could make one up every year myself. Why do they think they are an authority. I have never understood this, and will never buy another one. I bought one in my life for $75. What a waste of money to read someone's "made up rules for this year."

Nothings wrong, i've been told i'm just about the best MT. I haven't let it go to my head or anything, but they're right. I still believe some of you are guessing, thats just my opinion.
I can tell you that remaining on the same account with same dictators
helps tremendously. Having to switch accounts and specifics is not the way to make a lot of $$.
Charge what you can to get the account. sm
What you charge is up to you. What the account will pay, well that is another story. Call around in your area and find out what the going rates are and go from there.
What do I charge for a new account?
I currently work as an IC...I am thinking about branching out on my own, but what do I charge per 65 char line...I know I am paid .07 to .09 cents per 65 char line as an IC, but Im not sure what to charge as a new client so that if necessary I can farm work out and still make a profit. I hope someone can give me an idea...I am in WV and I do know that it varies throughout the country but I just do not want to over price or undercut myself. ANY help you guys can give me would be great. Thanks.

I used to have an account for which I did on average of about 2000 lines per 6 hours and I did use an expander. I still use an Expander but have a different account, which is very difficult, and I average about 200 lines per hour.
I did a clinic account once and this one doctor was
majorly ADD (we diagnosed him - LOL). He would lay the phone down and look through the filing cabinet or his desk drawers, dictating the whole time. There were almost as many blanks in his report as words.
I lost a clinic account
to EMR. I had lunch with an old friend who is an ER nurse in Colorado and the ER changed over to EMR recently. So far that is the only department in her hospital, but she expects the entire hospital will eventually.
This is the touch screen type of thing. She says there is a computer at every station or bed. When they chart, it also generates the billing so more revenue is captured.
I would be worried if I was younger, but should be okay until retirement hopefully??

I am supposed to be p/t and he dictates between 30-50 min a day, many times 50-70 min even. It takes me many hours since I am a newbie. The paychecks just don't seem worth it for the amount of time that I am putting in.

you don't have to charge $60/HR - all you have to do is charge a good rate and then..
work smart, not hard. If you have a great dictator, charge him 14 cpl on a 65 char gross line, then set up your templates and word expanders, you can make $80/hr. But you need all three to work together, otherwise you might only be making $60/hr. Some people are just really good at what they do - shouldn't they make more if they are more productive?

I work an account where ESLs are better than the American dictators ever hoped to be. sm
There is bad dictation all over - you need to learn to cope with what is out there. Don't be afraid of the ESLs - you can only do what you can do, and for even American dictators, there is just no hope for the report coming out flawless if it is a bad dictator. I have 25 years experience, and there is just the fact of the matter that if junk goes in, junk is going to come out, and experiences helps with figuring out the words, but some words are so badly mispronounced, there is no hope of figuring them out. Blanks are inevitable, but that is why we have QA - they are the next level after the MTs get the rough draft out there. It pays to have a second set or third set of ears, and it is part of the plan - it is not all on just you to get it right on the problem dictations.
I typed both Rad and Clinic, just asked to be put on when a Rad account came open.

This account was personal for me, not through anyone else. I offered to lower the line rate.
If you have this account through a service, leave it alone. If not, and this is personal for you, then at least make them the offer of a lower rate. They will recognize your integrity, which you have displayed here, and which may well come into play in the future.

Your account is too easy for your skills would be my thought.
For instance, you are making very good money easily while other MTs may be on a more difficult account and making less. You may one day be looked at as a person to move into another more challenging account to keep you in the curve of pay for MTs. That would be fair, actually, when you think about it.

a newbie and you still have to look up lots of words .... The very first day I typed, with absolutely no education way back when, when you didn't have to have a degree/certificate or previous experience, I typed 665 lines. This was without an expander and I was not a fast typist. I can do 1000 lines in about 4 hours now on average.

Ever come to like a specialty you used to hate, just because the dictators are so good?
In my case, it's cardiology. Used to CRINGE when I saw a cardiology report come up. But on my account, almost ALL the cardiology docs are great to transcribe. Now I actually enjoy these reports and have learned a lot about a specialty I used to hate!
Now, physical therapy will always and forever be my most detested specialty. I get really bored with all the stupid exercises and the patient saying his/her back hurts. Whose back DOESN'T hurt? The fact that PT on this account has some of the worst dictators certainly doesn't help any.
I find myself willing to research more for good dictators...SM
if I get a lazy, mushmouth speedtalker, I don't bother much. I mean, I definitely strive for accuracy with what I *can* hear, but if there are unintelligible parts, I leave a blank rather than playing it over and over and over and trying to get it. If they obviously don't give a rip, why should I?
Maybe a bad attitude, but why should I gyp myself out of $$ because some a$$ can't be bothered to E-NUN-CI-ATE!!

I am so ticked. I work on VR and everything is nothing but a bunch of words that fit nothing, dictators cannot speak properly and VR throws in whatever. I am sick, I tell you, of dictators who don’t care. I am on my soapbox because I am so angry with having to listen to all this ______ (put in your own words here).

Even with multiple GOOD dictators, I still find it hard - sm
to do '8 hours' worth of transcription in less than 11-12 hours, mainly due to the lack of ability to make templates, as each doc does his H&P entirely differently. Also they want extraordinary accuracy, grammar clean-up, and proofreading done on each report. So a longish H&P can sometimes take an hour.
Good way to keep her accounts. SOMEONE has to read this stuff over
EVERYONE makes mistakes.

I, too, was married to a controlling (though he didn't get far with me in that regard because I cannot be *controlled* and since I'm a teenager) french frog whom I divorced 15+ years ago for my SANITY. My sanity became an issue and I became my own Hero........and have been V_E_R_Y happy DAILY without him. *L*

Absolutely not! Most editors do not charge by the line. A good editor
knows that line pay is not fair pay, or let's say a quality editor knows that line pay is not fair pay. I have done some VR editing and believe me, the ones I did you literally had to retype the whole report. Figure out an hourly rate that would work for you and don't take anything less. Editors or QA people should not be paid on production. That's the final step to quality and some of these groups, services, will learn that one day! Some of the better ones already know that.

This is a good career, but it is not easy. sm
I work about 30 hours a week and make around 1500-1800 a month. It depends on your typing speed and your stamina, and mine are just average. Some make more per hour, some less.
It is hard work. You are constantly being challenged to learn new things, the medical field moves very fast.
There are a lot of changes going on now, with many of the companies sending work to other countries to be done. Some feel there won't be any jobs in a few years, but I don't think this way. Many of us may be editing off-shore work, and that can cut down on the paycheck.
I personally think that there will always be a place for really well-trained individuals. You just have to search harder to find the right job for you. Some of us are used to making $20-30 an hour in the past (I was), and it is discouraging to work for so much less. But I think the new graduates who get jobs are more optimistic.
You might go to the "New MT/Student" section of this forum and post a message, get the opinions of some of the newer MTs.
Those are both good schools, not cheap, but I believe both will help you get a job if you make good grades.
You'll hear both positive and negative on this board, so sift through and judge for yourself. Just remember, this is not a "quick fix," but a long-term commitment that can pay off well, if you check things out and it really is right for you.
