to know Gregg ShortHand (which I was required to learn in high school) the phonetic system of Gregg is what I use, as well as some of its 'brief forms.'
This is how my brain wanted to set my expansions up when I started 15 years ago, and it's what I remember very easily. For my system, I start with a root word and add a suffix or prefix, or both.
proc = proceed; procd = proceeded; procg = proceeding; procr = procedure.
drn = drain; drnd = drained; drng = draining; drnj = drainage. (I use a J for the end J sound, since G is for -ing.)
fxn = function; fxnd = functioned; fxng = functioning; fxnl = functional.
If I want to type dysfunction or malfunction I add a D or M at the beginning of the word:
dfxnl = dysfunctional; mfxn = malfunction, mfxng = malfunctioning, etc.
I have built in expensions of abbreviations and acronyms, as well. esld = ESLD (capitalization built in) and esldx = end-stage liver disease. Whatever I want to expand, I add an X at the end. cabg = CABG and cabgx = coronary bypass grafting. hpi = HPI and hipx = history of present illness.
And headings, of course: hpih = HISTORY OF PRESENT ILLNESS: (the end H stands for header.) hpib = (same thing, but bolded. ) I suppose if any accounts needed underlined headers I would use a U at the end.
Seems to work for me, and I seldom type an entire word. Also, there are some words that I tend to misspell so I have put them in my Expander with an asterisk. I have an unfortunate tendency to hit a G instead of B in BUN, been doing it for years, can't break myself of it, and spell check would never find it. So I have put the word gun in my expansion to print out as gun* so that I can easily see right when I've done that. Couple of other words I have done this with, but I can't recall what they are right now.
