Finding a legitimate work-at-home opportunity can be very confusing task, but once you get in to the field you feel great by working at the comfort of your home. You may come across many opportunities but you have to very ideal in choosing the best which suits you. In case, if you have always worked for someone else and are depressed with this situation, or if you want to spend more time at home, you may want to consider finding a work at home opportunity that will allow you to earn money but give you the free time you are looking for.

What would you do? I have been given the opportunity to work from home sm
for a start-up company in mass media (please don't ask name of publication since I can't release that yet). I know the owners, husband quit job to pursue this full-time along with a few other people to start this media company. We've been meeting once a week for about 6 weeks. Right now I am part-time. I am doing the editing for this company, a lot of reading and research and today was told, if I decide to work for them frome home, that I could also be the corresponding editor, meaning once their first publication comes out in April, whenever someone has a "letter to the editor," that email would come straight to me, I would either route the mail by importance to the appropriate staff member or answer them myself - it will all be up to me. Basically, I would be an administrator for the company as well as edit articles, speeches, ads, etc. that come in. This job would be multifunctional.
About the pay: We haven't really discussed this yet. The owner gave me a list of salary ranges and I would fall into the editor/administrative salary range which is a little more than what I make right now. Would you make the jump??
I am married and my husband's salary pays most of our bills, but I definitely need to work. I've taken a few days off to meet with this new company and to decide if I should quit MTing/QAing to dedicate my time between work and family with this company. I can't do both. No way! They want to start sending me stuff right now and then I have my company counting on me to QA.
Today was my first day back QAing and I am dreading every single minute of it. I want to edit and email and meet with these people, but I'm hesistant to do so. Not sure how much security is in it. I would hate to quit and then this media company can't get off their feet.
What would you do? Editing/administration is my gift. And I can still work from home. Would you do it? 
How to find legitimate work as an independent contractor?
I work about 25 hours per week for a company, making 7.5 cpl. I'd like to try supplementing with some IC work to try to make more per line. How do you go about scouting out legitimate work?

As an IC...are you finding enough work?
I was an IC for 26 years, then decided to join the digital world and become an employee for benefits sake. I am on my third company in one year and none of them have kept me in full time work (1500 lines/day). I'm so frustrated. I love the bennies but I need full-time work. So, I'm considering going IC again and trying to get as many accounts/companies as I need to get the lines I need.
I am wondering if the ICs around here are still able to find the amount of work they want...specifically via MTSOs rather than local offices/hospitals...anyone who cares to share, I sure would appreciate hearing your experience. TIA.

that pays a minimum of 10 cents a line. I have been an MT for 27 years and I take pride in my work. Things have changed at my current company and cherry pickers have taken over so I end up doing all the reports no one else wants to do. This takes me longer and my line count is suffering. I know there have to be good companies out there that pay well and need good employees. I have left my email address if anyone would like to offer me some hope and share names of companies. Please no flames, I am just an honest MT wanting an honest job with decent compensation. Thanks for any help.

Has anyone breast fed while trying to work at home, can you do this and still work full time?
It seems like the more literature I read on the subject, the longer it seems to take, especially in the beginning when you are breast feeding every two hours, or does it really just depend on the baby?
I second this; definitely see if you can get an opportunity
to listen to some dictation before you commit a lot of time and resources to it. Not that you should really understand it right off, but I think in people who have "the knack" there's more of an "aha" there than in people who don't.

... Good for you that you are going to school and moving on!!! I know it's hard. I worked my fingers to the bone doing transcription all my life. I started when I was 17 years old, and stayed in it for 39 years. I'm 56 now, and barely going to college. It is never too late. In fact, I find that my age is an advantage. Because of my background in the medical transcription field, I find I am ahead of the kids in college, and my life experiences give me an edge. I am one of the few getting A's in most of the classes!!! I am going to go into law, if all things go as planned. I will get a batchelors degree in paralegal science, and then once working in that field, will move on to a law degree. I am determined.

This would be a legitimate lawsuit....
I have seen this situation before and, believe me, you have a major lawsuit on your hands and this would not be a frivolous one like so many are. You are talking about a medical professional who has taken monies up front to perform a service that he did not perform, he is withholding monies owed back to you (which is unlawfully stealing), and he fradulently dictated a report on a procedure that he did not perform. You need to consult with an attorney and see what the statute of limitations are in your state as far as the face lift aspect, but as far as the fradulent making up of a report and keeping monies owed to you, he needs to be helpd accountable. This means he has probably done this before many times to other people. The hospital is at huge fault here and is at risk for a major lawsuit. The administrator of this hospital needs to know this first hand from you or your attorney. Please don't put this off. This guy needs to be brought down to earth. He is probably a big money maker for the hospital and they won't discipline him unless you do something to start the ball rolling. If the hospital is a privately-owned company, they will pay attention to what you're saying more than if they are a non-profit hospital where the doctors tend to run the show.

the best I can tell you is make note of them, ignore the petty stuff. Many times people who have their own accounts have spelled things wrong for years and if never told about it, wouldn't know! Use it as a learning tool and make the most of it.
Legitimate complaint
I think you are cheating yourself by not keeping a tally of the lost lines .. open a word document on your second screen and copy and paste these lines each time .. takes a few seconds and you need to be paid for what you are being asked to do .. otherwise, request a reprieve from this guy. Venting is one thing and it helps a little but cold hard cash actually speaks back to you!

I fell into MT as well, and it was a good fit for many years. But things changed in the 1990's, and even at a good-paying in-hospital job, they started treating the MTs like crap. Pay didn't go down, but morale was abysmal. Working at home freed me from management abuse, but now I'm pretty much chained to my PC, as the only way to eke out a living at this profession is to type ALL THE TIME, every day. Even a quick jaunt to the supermarket feels like a 'vacation', these days. And a real vacation? Forgot it. I've been kicking around the idea of learning something else, but I'm now almost 58, and time and money are 2 things in short supply around here.
Doing straight typing, you'll be hard-pressed to find a job that pays more than 8 cpl, 9 if you're lucky. And it's really not enough to live on. (Yes, you currently have a dual income, but you should always factor in that that could possibly change someday. By then it might be too late to get out of MT and start over again.) And American MT jobs seem to be headed in the direction of being solely ESL-and-VR-editing, at a microscopic 3 cpl, which will probably just go lower in the future.
Given a do-over, I'd go to school and learn something that isn't done on a PC, and which is less likely to be sent offshore.

Weigh all aspects for opportunity
I am making $14/hr QA with national and that was supposed to be "starting" pay over a year ago..still waiting for my raise to bring me equal to my peers who are making just a buck or 2/hr more. I don't know about in-house QA but I am a 30-year veteran MT and when I see you say you've been 9-year MT, I am seeing for YOU what I would call an OPPORTUNITY which is something that is hard to put a price on when you're 'relatively young' in your career. I'm just trying to think about when I had 9 years under my belt as an MT in-house and yes, as you say, you still are learning something every day and even at 30 years, I am always learning something every day. In this business if you're not willing and eager to learn each and every day, then you're going to be lost real quick...There are many other factors you should weigh beside pay when looking at this. You need to consider benefits and long-term possible advancement that may be there for you. You have already impressed these people and this could be your chance to get beyond the MT aspect (which, I might add, is becoming more and more of a losing prospect IMO). I'm just saying that you should weigh ALL factors other than pay and see which one offers you the most for your future in this industry and don't miss an opportunity here...you can always go back home if it doesn't work out! CS is absolutely a legitimate program.
I'm a proud CS grad, and have enjoyed working as an MT for the last 18 months. I had no problems getting hired (multiple job offers) and no issues with ramping up to line counts or QA expectations.
There are folks for whom CS isn't the right match, just as there are folks for whom Andrews and M-Tec aren't the right match. You should definitely research the programs to find the one that fits your learning style best. Good luck!!

Although I'm sure there are legitimate cases of ADHD and autism out there,
I find it hard to believe that all the kids who are pigeon-holed into either category actually do suffer from either condition. They seem to have become a catch-all excuse for "my kid doesn't pay attention," or "my kid doesn't behave the way I'd like him/her to".
Our society has come up with so many lame excuses for so many things, and tends to need a "name" or a "title" for everything.
Maybe this child is just one who matures later than others, maybe she needs to have someone sit down with her and take the time to help her focus better instead of immediately labeling her with the condition du'jour.
MTSOs: Politely declining a job opportunity?
I sent out some flyers and got 2 accounts at roughly the same time. One is wonderful, keeping me busy, and I love, love, love it. The other one negotiated the price down and has not been particularly cooperative. I realized today the latter account hasn't signed the service agreement, and I would just like to tell them properly and politely that it simply isn't working out, but I don't know how to go about it. Has anybody had to do this before? How would you suggest going about it? I don't even know where to begin.

Just finished my certificate at a local college. I probably spent $1000 or more and can't get hired. Just wondering if Career Step would be a waste of $$$ and time?

It is all about attitude.
I have done a fair amount of switching in my time. I have one of my IC situations for 3 yrs, the other for 6 months. I am giving up on the 6-month arrangement for a full time, with benefits and using my favorite expander, actual job. This is all just in time for the new year and I am excited about it.
I won't lie to you, a new job with new software, new voices, new management, new people to work with, new specialties...it is stressful and there will be a learning curve. Sometimes the learning curve is too steep, the platform a dinosaur and all the voices seem to speak Greek and not Latin like they are supposed to, and you move on again. I am convinced the right fit exists for each of us.
You also need to know that most of the situations out there currently pay you about 2 weeks after you do the work, they do offer direct deposit and other nice things. Having not had a rubber check in the past 5 yrs, I can tell you it is nice not to worry about that either.

Hi there, I do web design, all self-taught through many, many hours on the "free website" places on the net over the years and help from my geek/techie friends ;) My sites are basic but luckily that is what my clients want. I really can't to all the fancy flash stuff yet! It pays very well by the hour but unless you have lots of clients, it only works out to an extra $100-200 a month once the basic site is designed and up and running. (I have only two clients at this time and its basically maintenance and small changes here and there to the coding). Its fun and interesting but if you really want to get away from a computer, this isn't a good choice! All day medical typing then a couple more hours web design can be hard on the eyeballs after a while! Another suggestion, my DH works full time and has a cleaning business (cleaning offices) on the side but that only can be done when the business is closed so that means weekends or nights. Best of luck!!

due to financial constraints. I am also doing research for other work at home programs that are legit. If anyone has info they would like to share with me either MT related or not that I can use that would be awesome! This is about 1 year out as I have a lot to get together with that and some things I am doing with my house to get it "organized."

Definitely work at home is the way to go.
I began working at home after I had my son. I got see his first everything. I get to wake him up in the mornings (the best time to get all the kisses) and I get to tuck him in every night. I get to go to all the school functions. I get to drop him off at school and pick him up. I get to be with him all during his summer breaks. I get to go to all the sporting events. He is now 8 years old and I can say with great pride, I got to watch my child grow.
I have gotten very frustrated with the company I work for, but it all truth - I wouldn't have missed this for the world!
If you have a chance to work from home and be with your child, I would say go for it and never look back. They grow so fast and being a mother is such a privilege - take advantage of your opportunity.

Looking for work at home
Sorry to be a little confusing, but I am actually looking for work at home. I know most home-based transcription companies (ie. cymed, spheris, medquist, accentus etc) are looking more of Radiology, OR, oncology, acute care experience but all I have right now is Pathology experience. I've been transcribing surgical reports for 6 years now and would like to do this at home as well, just to pick up some extra $$$.

For those who work from home..
Do you ever feel like you get away from transcription when working from home full-time? I work part-time at home, and it seems (especially on my Sunday shift) that I'm typing all day and half the night! Do you just completely shut down after a strict schedule and walk away from it? Even when I quit, I'm there in my bedroom which is where I also have my computer armoire and I feel as if it is staring at me! LOL...calling my name...pleading with me to come work. The co. I work for part time is always needing extra help and I feel so guilty just to lie around when I could be typing. It may sound silly, but it is really getting to me!

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU!! That is THE MAIN REASON I am taking this course, and going to work from home so i can be home with my children. I also homeschool them, and know that it will go so much more smoother with mom being home all the time.
I would work from home.
I think you have to weigh the savings on gas, clothing, daycare (if that is an issue for you), eating lunch every day (unless you packed your lunch), and personally I hate dealing with office politics. I personally enjoy working from home because I can be here in the afternoons when my son gets home from school. If he is sick I don't have to worry about missing a day of work or leaving early to go and pick him up from school. If you don't have children to consider, then it really would be a toss up. I think you would really have to look at the monetary situation and figure out which job would be more beneficial for you to take.
MTs are not the only work-at-home
employees who have the "jammies" image. Get a clue. Don't worry your little self about MTs like Red and myself.....we are doing just fine. And, let me add that my employer is very happy with me -- jammies, kids and all!!!!!!!!!!!!
I work at home, too.
But I still get the dose of nastiness, rudeness, unprofessionalism. I can only imagine (shudder) what it must be like to actually work IN these doctors' offices. If they're rude and snipping on the phone, imagine what they must be like in person, and this goes for the doctors too. They all just seem totally ice cold with a take-you-or-leave-you attitude. It's just total unprofessionalism all the way around from everyone and from every doctor's office I've ever transcribed for, with the exception of one office.

just asking because I am not too far from Pittsburgh. Does the hospital ever hire anyone right out of the immediate area? I would be interested but I know with some hospitals you have to be local in order to work at home. TIA!

I see/hear a lot about "acute care", what exactly is this?
As far as income goals, if I can make around $1000 to $1500 a month I will be happy. This would let my husband stay home more.
My grammar, spelling, and listening are pretty good. (My mother teaches high school english so I grew up with it in my blood) And learning vocabulary should not be too much of a challange as I have devoured books since I started reading and new words are fun to me.
I just do not want this to take so long that it feels like a waiste of time to both of us. Finding something to do from home is tough with all the scams out there.
