Fill in the blank: You know you're getting old when....sm

1.  For me, when a person I used to babysit from infancy until school age has completed his internal medicine residency and is in a private medical practice.

2.  When I get up in the morning my knees and back crack so much that you can hear them at times in the next room (daughter asks "what's that cracking noise" will confirm this!)

It would be just as arbitrary to penalize QA for not being able to fill in the blank. (sm)
The assumption is that all blanks are understandable.  They are not.
Classy my ____--you fill in the blank....
--I saw the clip of Walters announcing Jones' failure to return. That was very practiced and classy, I'll hand her that; but then she's had lots of experience and people to help her craft such an announcement.

--I also saw the King show when Jones talked about what had been going on and why she did what she did. I thought that hat was very classy as well. Her being a lawyer certainly helped her craft her statement.

--Overall, I totally believe Jones' accounting of what happened, when, where, why and who knew what and who knew it when. She was quite clear, her timeline precise.

Her reasons for handling her announcement at the time and in the way that she did also made perfect sense if you listened to her closely and carefully.

I was in her situation once--unfairly "let go" and for totally bogus reasons from a large local San Francisco, CA, foundation.

I was told that I could tell anyone at the foundation anything I liked about my departure.

I was in shock at what had just happened, left my supervisor's office, wandered into the kitchen for something to eat/drink.

A co-worker (high level staff) was there and I spoke to him that I had just been let go. We talked briefly, he offered his sympathy.

After he left the room, my supervisor swooped in, telling me that it was not a good idea to talk about it the way I did...blah, blah, blah....she could only have been in the hallway, listening at the door.

Yeah, Walters, et. al. did do what Jones said they did. And the way Walters handled everything did indeed look "classy"--with time, experience, and help, how could Walters go wrong?

Jones told the truth from start to finish on King's show and the View Crew and network couldn't/wouldn't handle it and did not want to face the fall out; and, they didn't want to lose face.

The further complicating problem was that as a public personality, Jones had additional public outlets to tell the truth.

IF Walters had: Simply kept her mouth shut, just weathered Jones' early initial announcement on air that day, deferred all questions of why Jones' contract had not been renewed to Jones' (citing privacy and confidentiality), responding to all askers with a 'no comment', and referring all explanations to Jones'she wouldn't be in the uncomfortable position she is in now. Walters would not have been so exposed, AND she would not have needed to get to Larry King in advance to cover her ____, to explain anything, and trying to look good, thereby maintaining her "classy" reputation.

Yeah, it was a business decision all right, handled badly and then it came back to bite Walters, et. al. in the butt.

Whether you like Jones or not, she chose to tell the truth and, as such, she had nothing to hide. Brava.

Today I feel...
Today I feel tired.  Didn't sleep well last night.  Kids are coming home early so that's a good thing    Work right now is slow, but that might not be a bad thing 'cause I could use a nap!!!  Overall, a very blessed day.  No complaints!!!!
Today I feel...
FRAZZLED! Too many things going on here.
today I feel
grateful for all God has given to me and sad for all that God has taken away from me.

Anybody else not feel like working today?
You know how you're sleep deprived, then when you catch up on your sleep, you feel even more tired than before?  Ugh.  I slept for 10 hours last night.  I've got a killer headache.  All the work coming up on my account today is lousy.  I'd rather be doing anything else right now.  Time to set the timer and get 'er done.
I felt bad today, but you must feel like this everyday
You need some serious help, who is this mean and nasty person, BTK or charles manson!
LOL! Well, good! I've done ONE good thing today, then. NM

Today was the only time that
DocQscribe went down like that, so get over it. It was a pain, yes, but it is up and running now. Name one other time that this has happened. If it takes you 5 hours to do your nails, then you must have some pretty nasty, funky thick nails.
If you would take the time you have spent here today

and work on building your expander, macros, etc. you could get your line count up faster.  Don't know if you have a line per day committment or hourly committment, but if you have lines you can get them finished quicker with a better expander and have more time to play or do whatever.  I am NOT a morning person, but I feel so much better when I do make myself get up and then by 9:00 I've made my line committment and I've got the rest of the day to do what I want/need to do and if I need more lines I can work an hour or two after dinner.   I almost feel like I have a 3-day weekend because I'm finished so early that on Friday I'm done early, my DH has an early day at work and is home by 10 usually so we have an almost full day to play.

Reassess your situation.  What were your reasons for coming home to work?  If you didn't have to work at all, would you spend all day sitting in front of the TV watching all that mindless garbage and letting the housework go?  Maybe you're burned out or depressed.  Maybe you just lack self-discipline as somewhat else suggested and you really need structure.

Just some things to think about.  Working at home isn't the fairly tale that most people think it is.

Needed this big-time today...thank you! :)

Well, collectively it probably took 20 minutes of my time to post today.
My kids are out and about. I did all my work. I'm a good girl, you see! I don't really get your perceived "jab" at me at all.  Why do you think that because I am in favor of someone being an MT and keeping their precious baby at home as opposed to in day care, that somehow that means I say I spend every minute of my life focused on my kids? I really think when you respond like this, its because you are not confident in your own life - I won't delve deeper, but you feel guilty. Guilty enough to have to make fun of me and put imaginary words in my mouth.  I never said a whisper or innuendo that MT mothers with kids at home have to focus every second of their lives on their kids. That's ridiculous! We all know that!  And I assume you're the same poster above about camp? You use the same SM.  I am sorry to disappoint you that I don't understand your "revelation" about my identity! I never said a word here about camp, and don't follow that thought at all.  The OP asked if she could do it - be an MT and have a baby at home. I recognize another poster from below, childfree by choice. She and I have had some wonderful debates in the past, and I think we usually agree to disagree! But certainly nice meeting you, I think??
Thanks, just trying to get a feel if it is worth my time or not.
Some platforms are money makers, and others are not. This one may not be.
Don't feel bad. For the first time in 2 years,
I didn't get my lines or hours. Work has been low lately. I've usually been way above the required production.
Well I'm off SS as of today...good bye

Why would you give someone a written warning after a few weeks... I'm new and I do not understand the dictators on some of the accounts, oh and lets add those are the ones they seem to audit...

Anyway I have an IC job with Accustat who is a nice company and I've been off QA for 3 months without any problems

Anyone else working today? Am I the only lowly sole with nothing to do until dinner time?

I feel like I am the only on working today, as the Boscov's parade is on TV, my two teens are sleeping, my husband is working OT and here I am working also.  Gotta cover my account today, at least until this afternoon, when I have to cook for my little family.

Just wanted to see if anyone else is out there today!

I feel like I work all the time too and my kids- sm
are always asking me if I have to work (usually I do). Lately though I have started trying to go to bed by 10 and get up at 3, work from 3am-6:30am, get them off to school, then I have all day from 8-3:30 available to work. Then be free for them after school and work again after they go to bed if necessary. I am still not disciplined enough though and work more than I should, i.e. surf the internet, come here, etc. Waste time in other words. So if I can "stay" on my butt and work consistently I can average 16 minutes of dictation an hour, which is good for me. All I can say is try to set up a schedule adn stick to it. I keep meaning to write one up, but have not as yet myself (did this for college and hung it on my wall), so maybe your post will inspire me. Good luck.
Bravo! I guarantee you will feel better in time

I feel your pain! This is the time of year sm
when I take advantage of my Netflix subscription, having movies delivered to my home. Also, there is PLENTY of great entertaining, informative stuff on the "cable" channels (I have a dish). I'm hooked on HGTV and DIY. The Food channel makes me way too hungry so I avoid that one. You can take a "mini vacation" just by watching the Travel Channel. Even the Weather Channel has some interesting shows.
Don't feel ill - it look me a very long time to find it and you can too.
Search, search and search some more. You will be surprised what you can find. It takes time, but those accounts are out there. How do you think MTSO and large MT companies get accounts? A little research and many phone calls.

want to take the time to mention how hopeful I feel...

reading a lot of the posts regarding the AHDI issue I see so many impressive, educated, eloquent posts that I am feeling confident again that our profession can be saved from being swallowed up like so many other professions that have fallen away.  We need more people like you to stand up for the little guy (no offense intended).

i feel disbelief/wonder. been at it a long time

Feeling good today!
Roses to my QA today.  Received a nice email with pats on the back.  It just kind of made my day!
Any money is good today sm
Take what you can to make ends meet and then switch when a better offer comes along, just don't burn bridges. Watch Jim Cramer, he says work at the Dollar Store if you can. I believe this will pass myself, just hang in there!
I had a really good transcription today.
A ESL doctor with laryngitis talking on a cell phone. At least he apologized  and didn't expect me to get all of his words.
You have some issues...if you feel YOUR time is being wasted then don't reply
GEESH!
anyone feel weird working at home all the time?

Do you ever feel as though this job takes over your life and you have to work all the time in case
there wont be work and you just keeping working and you cant get away from it and it gets to be no fun anymore. I am having a problem with that. Is it from working at home or just getting obsessed or what. I hate this. I feel like I am losing my life to it.
Another good one on Guru today. Pay is $25 per AUDIO hour.
With a 30-minute unpaid AUDIO test file.  It sounds as if somebody got behind on their work and needs people to do it for free or minimum wage.  Egads!  What cheapos!  I did an AUDIO hour tape this past weekend and made $100 off it.  I could have charged more since it was a weekend stat but I gave the guy a break.
BUT, you are brilliant. Keep up the good work! You are my hero for today! nm

It's good to know there are others who feel this way.
Like many others, I got into this field to "work at home." I loved MT and I worked my way up into management, QA, and instructing. Now, because of the trends to outsource, eliminate mid-level management positions, and change employee positions to home-based IC positions, I'm back at home again with no benefits, no paid time off, no job security, feeling shut off from the world, with no professional "friends" other than nameless, faceless internet acquaintances. As you said,I feel as though I'm losing my social skills because the only one I talk to for 10 hours a day is my dog, and I have gained the dreaded 10 pounds because I have no motivation to get up out of my chair and exercise! I agree that it should be obvious to anyone that the future of this career is not bright, to say the least. Don't get me wrong, I make a lot of money and I have a lot of flexibility, which, to some, may make up for the negatives, but in my case, the negatives outweigh the positives, and I feel the only answer is to get out now. I haven't always felt this way. As I said, I have been an MT instructor. I painted a beautiful picture for my students of what a fabulous job MT could be. It's only in the past few years that I have developed such a negative outlook. I commend you for your decision to complete your degree. I wish I had done it a long time ago.
While you may feel good about yourself,
your attitude really isn't professional. I had an attitude like your's about 20 years ago at the start of my career - days of tapes and paper. Sent back a report with a note that I could NOT type it - could not understand it at all, and my boss sent it back saying "you have to hear it - its your job"...I struggled thru it, and many others and I developed an ear for ESLs. Lots and lots of professional MTs have developed their ear for ESLs - all ESLs - fast or slow. They are understandable by your peers. So, I feel sorry for your attitude - you will never learn the business in full. And I'm sure you'll spout that you're proud of not doing the hard ESL's, but that's just an excuse. You can't, or won't, let yourself hear them. And I totally relate - years ago if I even heard an accent, my brain froze, and that was it for me - zero understanding. You have to want to hear it. And now, for lots of us, ESLs are no big deal - no difference at all, so nothing hinders us! Much better environment.
It does feel good looking forward.
Thanks MTPockets! You bring up a good point. I AM moving on and it is going to be okay. My kids need to see me normal and happy. That's two things my younger two have never seen because he's their daddy. This post became so fun and I love that! Thanks again to everyone to who posted!
that cant be making you feel good.
wondering what company it was...your making me feel scared...i dont have a lot of exp either, hope its not gonna spread.
We all get burned out, don't feel alone. That is good (sm)
money. You can set your own hours, etc. But, taxes are a concern as well. I went to work for our local nursing home and found it more rewarding emotionally. Actually was left money by a lady I use to stay and play cards with. So just remember to be true to yourself and there are people who do good things when you least expect it. So your efficiency obvious has not gone ignored, but take the break if you feel you need it and go back when your ready. That's the great thing about being an IC!!
what some people have to do to feel good about themselves

"What do you all do when you have to type an expletive?  I am working on an account where this comes up often.  I refuse to type the actual expletive so I usually just put (expletive) and go on.  No one has ever said anything, but I was curious as to what everyone else does."

That was my ORIGINAL POST.  I wanted to know what any other MT in the field did regarding expletives.  I didn't ask you to judge my character.  I didn't need anyone telling me to "put my big girl panties on."  All I was looking for was for you all to tell me what you did in that situation.  I guess it makes you feel good to pound on a person rather than address the inital question - if that's what you need to do, then so be it.  I am not new to the field.  Been an MT for over 10 years and have never typed an expletive, though it hasn't come up often.  Found this board and am mostly a lurker and thought I would finally run it by some others.  Should have just kept it to myself.  No wonder I like being an MT - you don't have to deal with other people very often.

Go ahead and feed the piranhas if that's what gets you through your day.

Good for you. Did it make you feel better?

Especially for Iowa, that is pretty good. UI can get good over time, but that's because of the u

I feel lost---is this as good as it gets? Need advice PLEASE

I have been doing MT now for almost 3 years.  Previously to being hired, I had never done MT before, but I had worked in a hospital system and public health for a total of about 19 years and I had a Bachelors Degree to boot, so I was hired.  I worked for a medical clinic that housed about 100 doctors of varying specialties.

The QA person never helped me, nor did I get training--I was pretty much on my own.

Reports were pretty simple, so I was able to get by without anyone helping me.  However, the boss was a horrible woman, a supervisor of medical records who was ALWAYS firing people for any little infraction.  If she didn't like you, you had even more problems.

She didn't like me, so she made my life hard.  I was short 100 measly lines of a goal she set and she made my life h-e-l-l.  She constantly wrote me up about it, even those I was sooo close, but other people that she liked, didn't have to have to meet goals.

Anyhow, I got fed up and quit.  I got hired at a hospital in acute care--a friend who worked there got me in.  This time, I had feedback.  Unfortunately, acute care is something I had no experience with and now my issues are QA.

You get "dinged" for any mistake and I can't pass QA!  I've been there for 5 months, but I'm scared I am going to get fired.  NEVER have I ever had to worry so much about my performance or getting written up and/or fired.

I've been having nightmares I am going to get fired.  I dread opening up any emails I get from QA--a fellow employee checks mine and she is VERY anal and dings me for everything.  I feel like they think I'm not "getting it" and I believe they are circling the wagons to get me fired.

I feel so dumb when I get my QA feedback.  How could this be? I know I'm NOT dumb and can do this job.  Certainly someone who made the Dean's List at an acredited school, has enough intelligence to excel at this, right?

I'm just ready to give up.  I'm scared to quit, as the job market and economy is pretty poor, but with my work experience and education, I've never had a problem getting hired.  MT has been the WORST choice ever for me.  I have a small child, so I thought this would be a good fit for me, but it's been a disaster.  Is this the way it's going to be?  Am I expecting too much of myself too soon?

I just feel like there isn't any learning curve anymore.  I feel so all alone, I can't talk to my co-workers about it, because they never share their QA scores or line counts.  I'm so freaking frustrated and stressed about this.  Any advice on my situation? Is this the way of life for an MT? Thanks
