At first I thought they were wonderful  but my last account had so many docs and so many specialities I just finally gave up and faded into the sunset.... they never even missed me.  I also found QA to be very rude sometimes - depending on which account you were on.

I worked for a company about 8 months ago that did this sm
threw the MT/QA under the bus and let the hospital call the shots. In my opinion that is very wrong. We are responsible for the reports yes - but the client should not be dictating who specifically does their work. It makes the MTSO look weak when the client has that much control. I argued and won my case but I was stung and quit pretty soon after that. I didn't want to work for someone who threw me under the bus and yet never listened to my suggestions/complaints about dictators, etc. Fair is fair - and I just did not feel it was fair. You work for the MTSO - not the client. Sure, the client is always right - we need to do it their way - but the MTSO is there as a buffer and needs to protect the MT/QA people

I worked for a plastic surgeon for 3 months...sm
and people having face lifts and tummy tucks are in incredible pain after their surgical procedure. My sister chose to have breast implants done and she was in severe pain for about 3 days after surgery. No way am I interested in having elective things like this done!

I would NOT recommend Transcend at the moment.Worked there recently for several months, and it was
a HUGE disappointment.  Very antiquated platform - total chaos on account rules - shuffling thru piles of papers for each job - horrible.  Supervisors were totally unorganized. Most accounts had no work. I had work, but it was just a huge bummer...job was opposite of everything promised...or implied.

my boyfriend's union has helped him to be laid off 6 months this year already...
Sure Union's PROTECT the workers... okay that's fine. but they also do plenty of other stuff that is not cool with me. I like the idea of them getting paid a good amount for what they do, but then there are times when if something happens on a job, for example, two workers get in a fight, they may get fired from that particular job, but re-hired with another one that hires union workers. It makes no sense. Obviously I see the point of unions so workers are not taken advantage of... but like someone else posted, someone would sneak away to sleep during her job with the union. I mean, have you seen DOT workers? Cal Trans ? i dont think I EVER see them working and I'm gonna guess they are a union (although I can't be sure).

For sure transcription needs something, but I don't think a union is it. Although I don't think we will ever have anything to protect or help us... too little "higher up" people know the problem.

That awful site worked for Scott last year. But my poor daughter is devastated tonight. She was a Kevin fan.
I worked there for about a year
& decided that I didn't want to do business with them.  Went on to much greener and happier pastures for awhile.  FCs pay is still VERY LOW.  Fees for anything are ridiculous and petty.  Sometimes I received pedantic e-mail scoldings about someone else's work, but they would send in a "blanket" to everyone.  QA was nice, pay was on time.  That's the good and the bad.  The only UGLY was the training person who was an absolute raving beotch (but only had to deal with her for a couple of weeks).

I'm in my 9th year of homeschooling. Have worked
FT the entire time.   I work a split schedule, half morning hours and then the rest evening hours.  That allows me time to homeschool, fix meals, do housework, etc.  
I worked for over a year inhouse
and my boss corrected all my work, every day from the time I started until I had less than 3 errors on a page and then I was ready to be doing transcribing. It was a good learning experience.
Last year I worked per dium for a company- sm
just doing discharge summaries. The hospital docs were super backed up, took about 5 weeks to get them all done with 2 of us working on them on a PT basis. I loved it as it was a good rate and not difficult work. Use a C-phone though which I really do not like using. Another IC job I had, you could tell when the doc was about to lose privileges as all of a sudden about 50 discharge summaries, H&Ps, etc would appear. We worked in a pool so it all got done in TAT for the most part. Where I am now, they know if they have 4 or 5 docs dump 100-200 mins each on us all at the same time that it will not be done in TAT. What they need right away they mark as STAT and the rest gets done by the oldest first.
I quit two months ago. I tried to quit for over a year, but I just had to be ready.
I tried the patch, NRT gum, Zyban, everything. One morning, I woke up and just quit cold turkey. There are some good online support groups out there that can help you when you're ready.
$32K/part time 6 months/full time 6 months
I have kept my child home with me half the year, but when pre-K started I began working full time. Helps to only have a main account and one backup account for the 2nd year now, so my abbreviation program rocks and rolls when I focus.
Every company is different -- I worked FT for one as an employee but worked a split shift - sm
So I never took breaks. I would work 5 hours, break for about 4 hours then do another 3. Another company I worked for did not care what hours you worked (IC) but wanted a min. amount of work each day, 500 for PT and 1000 for FT-- BUT they paid you by how many lines an hour you put out, the higher the lph the higher up the scale you made per line in pay; they have since changed everyone to a flat rate with incentive. But bottom line, if you are an IC it does not matter what hours you work, though many ask for a schedule and ask you to stick to it, they just want you to meet line requirements daily, i.e. 1000 per day, 1200 per day, whatever it is.
Union diesil mechanic - good pay, great benefits. We swap year to year on who brings home more sm
money.....but I am an IC and he has all the benefits...health insurance/dental that the company pays for, pension plan, 401k, etc.  Factor all of that in and he makes way more than I do.
to cowgirl - Last I knew, last year the job paid $25,000/year no taxes, etc.
The hospital was bombed about a year ago, but not a lot of damage, very minimal damage.

I got up early, worked during naps, and worked when DH got home.

You have to be disciplined to make yourself work when baby is napping instead of maybe watching TV or doing housework, etc.   


I might also go the route of having a teen come into your home, or either trying a mother's morning out program at a local church/daycare.   I've been home since my youngest was born and he has never been in all-day daycare, but I did have him in a mother's morning out program 15 hours a week at a local church.   It didn't help a lot with my work schedule because I had an older son in school and was a room mom and tutored other kids, but that might be an option.  The only problem with the mother's morning out program is they are around other kids and tend to pick up every germ.  I finally took my DS out of the program because he stayed sick.  You were supposed to keep them off if they had green nasal discharge and I did, but no one else did.  Every time I got him well after 2 to 3 days back he would be sick again.  Other than that it was very good for him because he would not have had a chance to be around kids his age otherwise. 


Nothing this year. We ALWAYS got a cool surprise in the past, but this year nothing. :-( nm

Not only did I finally receive the proper training, but the woman on the advisory board hired and mentored me. I also joined the local AAMT and networked. Good luck. I know how frustrating it can be. A community college will have a good program to include medical language, MT courses taught by local MTSOs, business English, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, etc.
I think he makes $700,000.00 a year, and if they ask him to walk before his first year MQ has...sm

to pay him a cool 1 million dollars.  You can check this out at the Medquist website.   I think the CFO makes $350,000 a year, and the head of IT makes $250.000 a year.


P.S.  This does not include the perks, like expense account, car allowance, sign-on bonus, etc. 


Our 16 year old son has been working for a year now to pay for his truck.
He's learning how to sand and do body work and how the engine and transmission go together. My parents didn't buy cars for my siblings and I either. I had a 20+ year old beater car until I could afford to move up to a a newer one.

I see all the nice new cars parked in the high school parking lot every day. It's nice that so many disrespectful punk kids get handed something nicer to drive than what all the teachers drive. Oh, well. Honestly, I think most of them borrow Mommy or Daddy's car or are the child of a doctor who can afford to hand them everything.

Hopefully, my kids will take better care of their cars because they bought and built them on their own. You're not going to grow up to be responsible if you don't work hard for something and expect Mommy and Daddy to bail you out all the time.

Oh, my Dad lectured us on even allowing our child to have a vehicle because Dad didn't have one until after he had worked his way through college, lettered on the football team, got straight As, lettered on the baseball team, yadda yadda. He either walked or hitched a ride. Yeah, well, times were different back then, Daddy-O. LOL At least my kid has the opportunity to work and earn his own car.

I worked on that system when I worked there...
The thing that chapped my hide about that TWS was that they designed it so that all the headers of each section of the report were canned and thus you were not paid for them, even though you had to take your hand off the keyboard and mouse down a list of paragraph headers to chose the one you needed.  Just racking up more profits for themselves.  Ticks me off.

why are we just hearing this now? I know voice recog has been around, but this is entirely different. This will also make coding and billing obsolete.

Don't know why, but it just bothers me that one of our 'own' is the one pushing this...and she is also connected with AAMT. Do they support this, and if so, what is their advice I wonder to the MT?

Perhaps that is one question for their website (I do not subscribe to their mag or credentials...)

I have been doing VR for 6-7 months.

The system has not improved in that time and it is much more time consuming to edit VR than to transcribe.  I believe the companies are selling VR to the doctors saying it will eventually be perfected and dictation will be done cheaper and quicker.  Right now that is definitely not the case at this point in time.  On the other hand, VR for banking and other services seems to be working well.  I do believe it's the future of transcription but for now it leaves a lot to be desired and is very, very tedious and kind of nerve wracking if you are used to transcribing. 


On the other hand, for someone who cannot transcribe but has medical terminology course, you may be able to make some money on VR and I suspect that is exactly what companies have in mind when they push VR.  Eventually all MTs will be replaced by MEs (medical editors) at a lower line rate.  I have seen as low as 4 cpl posted for editing so for someone who wants to work at home, I guess that's good enough especially if you can't transcribe all that well utilizing expanders, etc.

Sure! It took me 3 months to get (sm)
good at MT (no formal training, just science background); like you, I sort of fell into it -- was getting divorced and leaving grad school, needed a job, had done transcription at temp jobs, so saw an ad and jumped -- made a grand total of $300 the first month, 10x that after 3 months. There is only one other job I've ever had that kept me as interested as MT -- working as a paralegal doing insurance defense work. I love the challenge of researching a new piece of equipment, I love hearing people's stories, and I adore working at home and avoiding all the politics and other garbage of a worksite. I love working all night when the work is plentiful and breaking my days up how I like. What's not to like?
I like it. I have used it for a few months
and it is very easy to get used to. The only thing I don't like is it doesn't spell check your work until the end, I'd prefer to have it checked as I go along, like in MS Word.
About 2 1/2 months here
My biggest problem is in the evenings. I am so sick that all I want to do is lay down and sleep until it passes. I work two jobs, so I am having the difficulties you are talking about. I am moody, too. This is my first experience with this while being an MT, so I'm right there with you on not knowing what to do. Good luck!
At the very least 6 months
It is absolutely overwhelming in the beginning. Worked in-office and tried to quit my first day after a half hour! How lucky I was to have a patient supervisor and kind co-workers. (Plus good references that actually showed sample reports--so helpful to see what the ''finished product'' should look like.) I hated my former job so I just kept coming back, reading everything available, and taking terminology classes. Maybe I was a ''slow study'' but after around 10 months, things started to make sense.
As a new MT myself, not quite 6 months
on the job yet, I take any and all feedback with a grain of salt. The tone of the e-mail does not bother me as long as useful information is being given. I did not graduate from one of the top 3 schools either, so I appreciate the opportunity to work and learn at the same time. Feedback often makes you feel degraded and dumb to a degree, but let us face it, we are. We are ignorant to the world of MTing. We do not know everything. We learn daily. Once you begin implementing the advice given you will probably find that critical e-mail will lessen. Also, trainers often do not have the time or resources to be "sweet" to everyone they train. Their primary responsibility is to make you the best MT you can possibly be. Learn, grow, and do not take it all to heart. Good luck.
I did for 6 months sm
a loooonnnnngggg time ago when my kids were tiny. I started out pouring the models but had to leave due to babysitter issues. There is very good money to be made there. Based on production but I believe they pay by the hour. Go for it. Not any more boring than MT can be at times. Around here if you can paint the porcelain teeth, the pay is close to $20 an hour.

took over 2 months for me

I worked for them last year.  It took over two months for them to get it together and then I finally had typing to do.  They do not go by their contract.  In it, it says you would have so many (50 maybe?) typings before they got out out of training (which has less pay of course) and it was over 200 and then it was only after I asked about it when they moved me to an actual account.  After that, I worked for about 3 months and every time I would be put on an account and start making decent money, they would switch me to another account and I'd have to start all over getting used to....thus not making money.  I finally resigned and explained why and the owner sent me an email, saying she didn't bother to read my email....but she didn't understand what the problem was....duh...if you had read the email, you might understand.  It was a mess and not worth my time at all.  There were actually hours where I could have made more money at McDonald's.  Oh, and when they fax you back any corrections, they charge for fax time......even when they're having problems with their fax...they charge you the time!!!....they charged me nearly 1/2 hour once because they were having problems with the fax and they were faxing MY work.....just not worth it to me....I'm sticking to my own accounts.

I wish I would have known about the clear nail polish before I started using this. I would have tried it. I have gone through 3 keyboards in as many years and my first keyboard keys were worn down to nothing.


2 months before they pay you?
I would explain that to them, that this is not ONE month, but it is TWO months before you will see a dime for work done, and that you have MTs that depend on paychecks much more often than that. Ask them if there can't be some kind of negotiation. I really don't see how they are even requesting that set up. NO one pays just every 2 months. If I paid my bills only every two months, I'd be sitting in the dark, for sure. I wish you the best on figuring this out. It's an awful situation for you.

We all start out in really crappy jobs, but stay there because it looks good on the resume for a better company.  My first place I worked with, I had to work with a guy who had no idea what he was doing, would type just about anything he wanted just to get paid (at that time 7 bucks an hour was big bucks) and when i'd correct him, because it would look bad on me too (there were only two of us per shift in the small room connected to the ER), he'd flip me off behind my back and make faces.  It was complete nonsense, but it got me into a better company.

I was using my computer but i believe it boils down to J doesn't have a clue what he is doing. somethings he couldn't figure out and i knew exactly how to do them. i think they got him off the street holding a work for food sign maybe. he likes for you to use company computer because he doesn't know crap about fixing yours. loved the company other than J and the hatefulness/stupidness that came along with him.

She has been here once in that time and she just started crying all over again until hubby felt bad for HER and started taking her side and I have just had it.  He is a big one on the few house rules we have DUE TO HIS MOTHER being so lax and not responsible, so rules are rules apparently except when his mother is involved.


We have been over this issue the past 15 years (since first child) as she is the one who always trys to break any discipline just becuase she happens to be there.  Sorry, they knew you coming and if they decided to get in trouble that is their doing and letting things slide all the time just becuase she is around made a mess of things and I am just full of it and decided if this is not a big deal for her...it should be for my husband and until the two of them realize how serious  her actions were they will not be left with her for any reason as I have no clue what serious is to her if that was not.  I could see if she did not know that the kids were to tell us anything that is/might be an issue first hand, but she has been in on that rule for many years, so it was not new or something I just decided to get upset about...standing rule so that we can discuss and find alternative solutions for next time, etc. depending on if an issue at all or something that might come up down the road again.
