This is my current company's policy: The BOS is to be followed, except when it differs from the company's style guide and except when also not in conflict with the site specific information of the client.
So you end up sequentially checking three different authorities (and of course you will not find the issue specifically addressed in all of them) and then trying to weigh which trumps the others. Client comes first, then company, then BOS. And if you work on several dissimilar accounts, it's frustrating and exhausting to figure all this out, and many minutes of production are lost.
