To the OP: Get a good tax guy instead of listening to people on here about percentages. A good tax person will help you determine what you can and cannot write off.
I write off dinners where I have discussed business with potential clients or people that work in their offices to try and schmooze... Don't you think the reps that bring lunch to the physician offices writes the food off? Of course they do... So, I am self-employed and anything I have to put out on food/travel, etc. to try and gain a client, I write off. What is good for the goose is good for the gander.
There is no red flag for deductions; it is when you are not reporting your income the red flag goes up. I'm no IRS expert, that's why I use a professional who is up on these things and do not try to go the cheap route by using any old program or any old tax person...
You do know that H&R block has a training program that lasts a few weeks and then they put these trained people behind a desk... My Mom did it, so I know that's what they do. You attend a class and all of a sudden you're a tax agent.
