working directly into a system. The transnet is how you receive the voice files. I've never used it so I can't help you more, but if you Google you'll be able to see what it is. As far as I know it is a foot pedal with a very expensive adapter that you plug into a USB port, but other than that I haven't a clue.

On Extext platform
how many hours straight typing to get 1000 lines and how many reports?
EXText itself is a good enough platform, but all
What the MTSO sets EXText up to pay MT's for lines is what determines how many lines you can get, and also as you said, the dictators. You can only get as many lines as the MTSO allows you to get with EXText. They control those ropes -- tell the platform how to pay and for what to pay on each report from each facility that you transcribe for. That is the way MTSO makes their money.
Would anyone be able to tell me how to back up my ESP file (ExText platform) to a CD.
I know they are backed up to the server, but I get really nervous having spent so much time creating them. The hospital I work for tends to run into computer problems all the time, and I just don't want to take any chances. Thank you.
I would like some information about the ExText platform, good or bad. Thank you. nm

Now getting lines on Extext is difficult with clunky platform
This is their greatest moneymaker! All jobs are run through voice recognition software first, then you will do good to get your lines from the junk that is thrown-back out of Exspeech. The platform you question is set up for all jobs through voice recognition first, then spit out by EXSpeech is dictator is so horrible it cannot interpret their voice. MT's end up getting nothing to transcribe EXCEPT the junky dictators that is not speech machine quality! You are in for a BIG surprise!
ExText line count...
Actually, I can access mine from an open document (Ctrl-I) or from the Transnet menu (there's an option for session stastics). I don't necessarily have to go to a website to see my daily line count, but yes for the whole pay period, I do, and it works out fine for me. I just keep a running daily total so I don't have to check the website every day! Hope this helps...
I make .05/line on one platform and 0.04 on another
and I will take the 0.04 platform any day as I can get almost twice as many lph. Just like typing, editing depends so much on the platform that I don't think you can always just look at a blanket line rate to tell.
Platform line counter
I check my line counts with the software counter every day at the end of my shift and write it down. At the end of this pay period, if I did a full pay period count on the same counter, my count doesn't add up to the same as when I add each day individually. At first I thought it might have to do with blanks, but it is off by almost a whole shift's worth lines and I don't leave very many blanks. I double checked the dates/times I entered to make sure I didn't miss a day. I did not.
Has anyone else experience this? I'm wondering if my company gets the count they pay me for this way. I normally don't add them all up for the whole pay period, so I never noticed it before.
Hmmm...my line count has gone way up since I am no longer working on ExText.

posts in the past talked about ExText low line counts

Great platform, but curious about being paid by line vs. report as well, which is best?
It's Dictaphone's ExText and it's good/easy, but some feel the line counts are skewed at

An excellent platform and a good line rate with plenty of work -

MTSO with platform versus no platform (big message)
If a MTSO advertises that the MT works in MS Word and sends dictation by FTP, does this usually mean there will be no demographic/doctor database and the demographics will not be autopopulated?
I got into a mess with a small company (got out real quickly too). I was required to print out daily email copies of the doctors' office patient schedules (which were barely legible) and type in all information. I spent more time hunting for the correct patient through pages and pages of these schedules. Then I had about 25 pages worth of doctor's names that I would have to go through to find the attending, referring, etc. A total waste of time as I didn’t get paid for that.
I wish MTSO would give more information as to what platform they use (if any). Proprietary software is such a generic, totally useless description. Would they buy a new car that listed, "Car has gasoline operated motor?"
And for Pete's sakes, why so secretive about the pay? Give a ballpark figure. Just say, pay is between 7-12 cpl depending on skill, testing, etc. Tell me if you pay for spaces, headers, etc. It would save them time because I wouldn’t even apply for a 7 cpl job.
Before I spend an hour or two testing, I need more information from a company to be sure it is compatible for my needs. If the MTSO would spend a little time on their website detailing their platform, how they send/receive files, pay rates, how line rate is determined (spaces/no spaces) employee/IC/SE status, minimal line count, whether work pools consist of 100s of doctors, or smaller pools with 25-50 doctors etc. Having all this information on their website would save them time and the MTs time. Phoenix Medcom has a really good layout describing pretty much everything an MT would want to know before testing with them. I am just tired of testing with a company and then finding out the job wasn’t exactly suited to my needs.
Platform versus non-platform (templates)?
I've been working for MTSOs for years now, using their templates which sometimes cause productivity problems (macro issues, etc). I'm wondering if productivity is increased when working on a structured platform, such as one that a national company provides for its transcriptionists? I've never used a platform, but it would seem that all one needs to do is straight type onto the screen and the platform program takes care of margins, page breaks, etc?
Any thoughts (as well as companies who are hiring who use platforms) would be appreciated. Thanks
It IS ExText, Word is simply the word proccessor used. ExText is marketed
by Dictaphone with Transnet and ESP is the expansion software incorporated into it. I used this platform when I worked for the hospital. I believe Wordclient is the speech recognition portion of this platform.
A gross line is anything on a line is a line. A line set at 65 characters means it sm
has 1-inch margins on each side. The maximum number of characters on that line would be 65 and that includes spaces. If there is 1 character on that line it is a line.
A standard 65-character line usually consists of 65 characters with spaces unless, of course, the employer does not pay for spaces and then it would be 65-characters without spaces.
Anything on the line makes up a line even if just one letter or number. Every line of print is a

Gross line = each line on page counts as a line, even if it's only 1 word. nm

Gross line means anything on a line is counted as a line.
You can get an idea in the difference using documents you have already created, assuming you're working in Word. Simply open a document and check the properties. Click on the statistics tab and you will see the number of lines as well as characters with and without spaces. If you're currently getting paid by the line and a line is 65-characters with spaces, do the math and see how that number of lines compares with the number of lines in your stats.
One thing to keep in mind: if you have a blank line between paragraphs, instead of hitting the enter key twice, format your document to give the appearance of blank lines between paragraphs.
Gross line, also including blank lines because my line rate is so low. It all works out in the wash.

$.06 gross line / .70 = approximately $.0857 cents per 65 character line.
A gross line is anything on a line versus 65 gross characters per net line the other way. You make more money working for the gross line than for the 65 gross character line, as long as the line rate's OK.
A gross line is any line with typewritten characters on it - no matter how long or SM
how short. So your gross lines may be longer than 65 characters, but you get credit even for a line as short as "Sincerely,". If your gross lines are not being counted that way, then you are not being counted on gross lines and are probably getting screwed. I'd look into that if I were you.
Yes if gross line or 65 character line with spaces....Good Deal!!! nm

1) do you have a contract stating line counting and line rate,sm
if you look at the IRS website it's pretty clear what constitutes IC versus SE versus employee. You might want to photocopy that along with a copy of your contract with your next invoice and also put on the invoice any monies due from past invoices they "changed"...maybe catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Good luck!
New England, 16.50/hr, 8 cents a line after minimum line count..
full benefits available with general contribution by the hospital before you start paying for them, retirement, 403b, all benefits, and working at home as an employee, BUT, you have to live local to the hospital.
I changed my line to a business line, talked to a supervisor sm
at SBC, told him what I was using the service for, and got the okay to use it -- $49/month unlimited.
I have also used The Neighborhood, and their unlimited is truly unlimited. I also explained to them when I signed up what I was using it for and their comment was "unlimited means just that -- unlimited, no matter what." I cannot remember how much they were, but it might be worth checking into for you. (www.theneighborhood.com)
Good luck!
What is the average line/hour for a 65 character line with spaces? NM
.
Curious, do most IC's usually charge by the gross line or 65 character line?
Thank you~
it certainly is not pay worthy at 4.5 line or 3 line. I know the companies cram it down our throats
nm
That still is not a paid line rate. If your base is $0.10 per line, it will be $0.08 cpl.
Considering other companies pay 4 or 5 cents per line for VR - you are still making out.
Question about what is PAID for a line and what is BILLED for a line
Does the MTSO actually bill for headers, footers, and other things the transcriptionists are not paid for? I worked for a company a while back and their copy of what each Transcriptionist typed the day before and our copy was a lot different, about 30% different. Their copy was the billing copy. So, double their enhanced amount and subtract our 9 cents a line, it comes to a bigger profit than what I thought.
What's the diff between a gross line and a 65-char line?
Mebbe just got my first OWN ACCOUNT YAY! He said to charge him the "going rate" since I pay him that. This could be the start, baby! (I hope)
A gross line is any amount of characters on a line
for instance...
MEDICATIONS:
Effexor
Prevasid
A 65 character line without spaces is black marks on the page only and 65 w/spaces is everything... tabs, spaces, numbers, letters, bold, etc.
that should be "up .02/line" NOT up "to" .02/line. geez. nm

Gross line versus character line....Sm please
I am thinking of taking a job that pays by the gross line and not a 65-character line. I have never worked this way. Does this literally mean if there is one little word on a line you get paid for it? I have not pinned her down on a line rate but I am just thinking I am going to be comparing apples to oranges and am wondering how to accomplish that.
Thanks for any help!
gross-anything on line counts as line, even one word

Extext
Does anyone like extext? Any information on Extext would be helpful! Does anyone like the word Expander better than shorthand?
TIA
Extext
I like Extext a lot and use it with Shorthand also. I didn't even know there was an Expander in Extext until a couple weeks after I started the job. So much for training! No, I don't work for Amphion.
ExTEXT
Is anyone familiar with this program? I have been offered part time and she asked me if i had a dictaphone, and then said we use extext where it goes directly into the hospital. Help!!
Texas - sunny and 78 degrees!
Extext
I HATE ExText. There is NO foundation to build from. You have to start from scratch. I have Smartype which I currently am unable to use with a company I just signed up with, and I'm about ready to quit as ExText is the WORST word Expander I have ever seen. There are NO preloaded words or abbrevs. like there are in SmarType, so starting with the word "a" ... you have to create ALL of your shortcuts off the top of your head. Again, if I'm wrong about ExText, I hope someone will set me right, but for now, I detest it. Sorry; maybe some people like it, but if they do, ask them if they have ever used SmarType or some other Word Expander program.
extext
Thanks for everyone's input... I do use ShortHand now, and am glad i can continue to use it. Now I KNOW i'm going to take the account!
Has anyone ever had EXText and VPN
installed on their home computer and discovered that Control T or Control X won't work in Word any more?
If so, does anyone know how to fix it? I really need help here and can't get it from anyone.
i use extext
to stop expanding, i.e. if I just want PT, I've just created new "expansions". I create PTx for PT, MRSAx for MRSA, etc. It's much quicker.
ExText
I work on ExText, and have previously work on DQS;
Yes, it has a spellchecker (mine does anyway) and expander. As compared to DQS, they are comparable...not really much difference that I can say right off the top of my head. For me, the program really doesn't seem to make a huge difference, it's more the dictators that seem to make the most difference, as well as the company you work for. My company happens to be great! Loads of work, plenty of incentive, and nice nice supervisors and QA. I love it!!!
EXText
I am so glad I could help. I have been using EXT for about 5 years now and I did the same thing with the Control/T when I first started using it!! Its a great program. I wouldn't use anything else.
Extext
I agree with poster below and am wondering the same thing - why are you using Ctrl T??? That ends your documement you are working on.
EXText
You cannot access voice unless the company has given you listening rights, which is usually not available on the MT side .. only QA.
I mean exText nm

HELP WITH EXTEXT
I had made macros to enlarge my view to 145% (Alt-B) while I type, and then another macro to shrink it down to 100% (Alt-S) before I send document. All of a sudden, these macros will not work! They have been working for months. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
