Every dog has its day. You won't believe this sm

Two weeks ago, we got a new puppy.  It's a Sheltie and the kids have just been loving it to death.  Today, the kids were in our fenced back yard, playing with the puppy when the little neighbor girl climbed the fence and joined in the play. 

My home office window faces the back yard so I can watch the kids out there and make sure they stay out of trouble. 

Pretty soon, I heard my daughter telling the girl next door not to be so rough on the puppy when she plays.  The pup was barking and growling, playing tug-o-war with an old sock we gave it. The girl was jerking the sock up in the air and then swinging it downward again so the pup hit the ground. 

I jumped out and ran outside, checked the pup, and told her if she couldn't play nice with the puppy she would have to leave.   She said sorry and went about playing again. Nicely this time.

I went back in the house and went back to work, watching the kids through the now opened window so I could hear everything more clearly.  I ran out of work temporarily so I picked up my digital camera and put it on movie mode so I could video the kids playing with the puppy.  Not 2 minutes later, the puppy was barking and growling again and my daughter once again telling the girl to stop messing so rough with the puppy.  I put the camera down and went out again.  The puppy was fine but I told the girl she had to go home now and she is not welcome over again until she can learn to play nice with the puppy.

She went home crying.  I went back into the house and went to put my camera away.  It was still on.  I didn't know what I had filmed so I went back and watched it again.  When I put the camera down on the window sill to go back out and check the pup, she had jerked the puppy up by the play sock and slammed it down again while I was making my way outside.  Then the pup apparently snapped at her foot from what I could see in the video.  She wasn't crying or anything, but she reached down to grab her foot and said OW, then hopped up and chased after the pup again like nothing was wrong.

About 45 minutes after I sent her home crying, a police car pulls up in front of my house with Animal Control right behind.  The girl's dad had called them to report that his daughter had been bitten by our dog.  Unbelievable!

While I am standing in the front yard talking to the police officer and the animal control officer, my two kids are standing behind me near the fence with the puppy and the girl next door is standing on her side of the fence.  All three of us adults could hear her tell my kids, "Their gonna take that stupid dog and kill it now."

The police officer goes over and tells her that she needs to go into her house and mind her own business, that he would come and talk to her parents in a few minutes.  She doesn't go in the house but instead, goes to sit on her front steps.  Her dad is peaking out through their dining room curtains.  What a guy.

Then I remembered my camera!   I told the officers that I had what happened on video if they would like to see it.  We all went into my office and I showed them the video but it wasn't very clear on the camera so I loaded it onto my computer and played it.   The officers watched the video and then told me to wait there.  They went next door for a few minutes and talked to the girl and her parents. 

When they came back over, the animal control officer asked for my vet paperwork on the puppy, which I gave to her and all was in order.  I asked if the girl was hurt seriously and she said they couldn't even see where there was a scratch on her foot, even though it did look like the pup snapped at her on the video. 

The police officer then comes in and asks if I would like to press charges for animal cruelty on the little girl!   The girl is 10.   They moved here about 6 months ago and she has been here infrequently but always behaved before today so I chose not to press charges.  I only asked that they please remind the girl and her family that our yard is off limits. 

Things turned out okay but.... I am really glad that I didn't turn my camera off before I went outside the second time, even though I thought I had.
