SOME of those you help aren't grateful, they feel as if they are "owed" help. I saw this in my local town. I help with the American Red Cross. We had long weeks of power outages after the last hurricane (we live 200 miles inland) and MANY evacuees from New Orleans came to our town. We housed them in our churches, took very good care of them. I went to help out with the children, which no one wanted to do. I saw why. Not all, but MANY of these children had no discipline, could have cared less about structure, as if I didn't know why. Most only had mothers or female relatives they lived with. Out of these, some actually got off their beds to come in rooms to help with the children, help pick up. The greatest majority never even knew where their children were. I walked around with babies clinging to me for hours; their "parents" didn't have a clue and never came to look for them. Their diapers hadn't been changed in hours; that is just lazy.
Later, in this particular church, a few of the evacuees found where all the donations were being stored and realized it wasn't locked (someone had forgotten to do this). And even though they had everything at their fingertips for themselves and their children (all they had to do was ask if they needed ANYTHING), they literally went in and mobbed the place, took tons of things they didn't need but just wanted. Their children see this type of mentality and you wonder why we saw on TV so many looting over stuff they didn't need? These folks felt entitled, as if it was the least we could do to give them "stuff". It was the least we should do to take care of their children because it was obvious many of them could have cared less. The church had to get on our local TV and asked for more donations.
When the reason for this got out in the community, do you think people wanted to donate then? By the way, there were hundreds of people, not just a few.
