and all kinds of vitamins. I like the Sobe one. I even drink it in the morning now, instead of coffee.

Staying Focused -Energy Drinks
I am having a huge problem.  I cannot seem to find the energy to work all day.  This sounds so bad because I sit all day!  Seriously though, it feels like I get so bored sitting here at the computer.  When I drink some of a Nos energy drink, however, work is so fun, I have tons of energy, and I make a lot of money sitting here.  I love this work, but what's the deal?  I don't even like consuming caffeine.  I got an energy drink the other night to stay up all night and finish some STATs, and now I feel like I can't work without it.  It was hard to focus even before I started the caffeine.  What is going on here?    Why can't I just get my work done like a normal person?
Caffeine and sugar had negative effect

My experience with trying to remain alert during 3rd shift:  I was trying to perk myself up with caffeine and sugar, but also found that I actually became MORE tired as a result.  Apparently, there's a biochemical explanation for this, due to the effect of caffeine and sugar on my insulin/blood sugar response.  Both caffeine and sugar cause an initial rise in blood sugar, but then a serious slump in blood sugar occurs, causing me to be even more tired than before.  So, I gave up the coffee and, after 3 days of withdrawal symptoms with horrendous headaches and fatigue, am having much more success staying awake during 3rd shift.  I have also found that a protein drink or snack is a much better solution.  Also, I am told that there are stimulants that do not affect the central nervous system as caffeine does, such as guarana, which I have not tried yet.

Also, it took me at least six weeks to adjust my body clock.  I figured out that I had to sleep at the same time every day for several hours, at least 7, and couldn't just take a few naps during the day and then expect to stay awake at night.

The only reason I choose to work at night is because the pay is better; otherwise, I wouldn't do it.  I look forward to someday having a decent account with a decent pay with a 24-hour turnaround time.  I realize this is a fantasy.

IV caffeine!! (sm)
It might take a little while for your body clock to get used to working nights, but eventually it will switch.

It actually happened to me the same way as you. My air conditioning broke and out of pure necessity I switched over to nights. This was before scheduling was requested, so I basically started working when the sun went down for as long as I could.

Five years later and with a/c I made many attempts to try to get back on a "day" schedule to no avail. When they started asking for schedules, I just decided to go with nights. Why fight it?

Tips? Hmmm... At first I'd take little cat naps at my desk when I felt like I couldn't keep my eyes open and that worked pretty well.

If I feel myself getting drowsy, I walk around a bit.

I keep the TV on (no sound) and it seems like just glancing at it every once in a while helps the time go more quickly. Don't ask me why. At 3:30 a.m. I watch game show network (What's My Line). It helps to perk me up because it's so cool to see the B&W oldies. After it's over, I only have about 3 hours left which goes pretty quickly.

Be sure you do sleep long enough when you go to bed in the morning and at first try to take a 45-minute nap about an hour or 2 before you sign on at night.

Another thing that helps me now is that it's summer and my daughter stays up all night too. It helps to know I'm not the only one conscious in the house (less lonely?). She doesn't bother me or anything, but it's nice I can hear her music or visit her if I need a break.

Okay, this break is up! LOL.

Good luck!

No, not anything but caffeine
I don't even take my B vitamins because even they are known to make me tired! Even when I take a migraine relief capsule I get tired. Does the 45 minute nap give you the second wind? Maybe I could try that instead of struggling. Sometimes I think the coffee makes me even more tired. Tonight I am trying water and it is working a bit better. I am going to try opening a window. Afraid the radio or TV would wake up the family even though I am in another room! Thanks for your help.
Does green tea have caffeine? nm
x
None. I try to avoid caffeine.

Caffeine is addictive and...
I finally got off of caffeine. I had a hard several days with horrible headaches and just almost feeling hung over. I know I was having caffeine withdrawls, but I stopped drinking it because of having thyroid issues and having PVCs. I will tell you this... Just because you think you shouldn't be tired because you sit all day and type and do reports, does not mean you can't experience extreme fatigue in doing so. I worked in a casino for 13 years and did nothing but stand and walk. I made the transition to strictly working from home a year ago, and I really believe this work makes me more tired than the casino ever did. I find it is hard for me to focus sometimes as well while working. I find my mind wonders and focuses on things I need to be doing besides transcribing and it is very irritating. I know how you feel little lady. :)

caffeine motivation
ok I feel sooo unmotivated to work even when I am right in front of my computer. I am just off task, thinking about other things. I lack the focus and brain energy to type. When I drink strong coffee or energy drinks, I am way more focused and productive. I enjoy typing and get lots done when I have been using caffeine. What is going on here?
Caffeine is also highly addictive

I love the stuff!!!!   Caffeine doesn't necessarily make you feel better, though, it just makes you feel less bad.  That's something I read somewhere that always struck a chord with me.  I'm not fit to speak to until I've had at least a hit of caffeine in the morning and don't even start on the headaches I'll get if for some reason I go a day or two without it.

Do you take vitamins on a regular basis?  Despite the so called research that says that vitamins don't really do that much, I have found that if I go for several days without taking my supplements then I get really draggy and have a horrible time focusing.  If I remember to take them, then I do pretty well and have a much easier time focusing and getting work done.

Unlike right now when I should get started working and am playing on this board.

Doc says to cut out caffeine completely- and I hate the Decaf. nm

black tea has just a tiny bit of caffeine, to help in weaning...

Also this seems to help energy..
I take a good prenatal vitamin, B150 vitamins, calcium, magnesium& zinc, along with some others, but I think these are the most important and help my energy level. GYN doctor put me on prenatal (going through menopause).Important to eat and not get into junk food, quick grab habit...
It is "speed" , of course it gives you energy! nm

I take energy supplements as well

I started taking them to help me lose weight, but I do find that my production increases when I take them.  But I end up having a hard time sleeping at night.  I also get headaches on the weekends when I don't take them and I'm extremely fatigued without them.  If you thought you were tired before you tried the energy drink, wait till you stop it.  It'll take about a week to get back to normal.  I think the other poster is right - try to get a walk in.  You also might want to try shorter shifts - that's what I'm trying now.  Work an hour or 2 and take an hour break.  It may take longer to get your work in but it's not as mentally exhausting.  This job is mentally exhausting.  Most people don't realize that.

kid drinks in college
And what are you gonna do if you kid does drink at college??  Kidnap him/her and deprogram them?  They are adults when they are in college.  I would hope by the time a child gets to be 17, 18, they have been taught right from wrong and no I would not want to know if my child was partying and drinking in college.  They are living a normal young adults life.  I would want to know he/she is having fun and doing their studies and, of course, if they became a drug addict or alcoholic, they I will be there but normal partying for young adults, Im okay with that..better than being tied to my apron strings.
The days I have energy and no hot flashes.

Seems to help me... Keeps me motivated, energy up... et cetera. NM
:)
I think you'd be wasting your time and energy and
If you're hanging around waiting on work, you're the one deciding to do so.

When you run out of work, go file unemployment if you are working as an employee. Tell them immediately you are filing for unemployment since they are out of work and also looking for another position ... and then go do it.

You can't force companies to provide you with work if they don't have any. I don't think your argument holds any water at all. You're the one sitting around waiting on it.

you don't want to know if your child drinks at college? (sm)
I am praying for you and your daughter. Honey, you had better get your head out of the sand and make it perfectly clear to your daughter, whether at college, home, friends, etc, it is not a good idea for a young girl to drink and lose control or insight into what is going on around her.  That is just asking for something horrible to happen.  Please talk to your daughter! Don't turn your back on something potentially dangerous to your child! When all is said and done, she is still your child, your responsibility, and God forbid something horrible happens to her, you will be blamed.
If an MT drinks a whole bottle of wine while...
working, there is NO WAY that can't have any affect.  Yikes!  There she.he goes now!
My gma is 87 years old and drinks a beer a day...
She still mows her own lawn, takes care of herself and her home and doesn't have any problems.  She's always been very fit, eaten right, didn't smoke, but when people ask her what her secret is, she swears it is the can of beer she drinks with dinner every night.  She's had cataracts but other than that she hasn't had any health problems and takes no medication.
thanks but no sweet drinks (diabetic) *S*...NM
.
My kitty drinks out of the toliet as well!
This is my first cat so I'm new to all of this, having dogs all my life. I bet your cat will come back home. My mother's cat goes off all the time and comes back weeks later.
Only 1 cup, but I'm addicted to monster drinks. nm

B150 is a great energy source...
The only place I can find them around here is Wal-Mart.
Yes....except I'd go for steak, that way I'd have plenty of food and energy

P.S. Channel some energy into agility classes
perhaps! Sounds like a great candidate if he/she can jump and get your sunglasses! Lots of classes for agility in most areas, and lots of fun for dog and owner, not to mention exercise! Woof!
It is because the body burns fat instead of glycogen for energy. sm
Without carbs, there is no insulin spike to store fat as fat in the body, so it goes through it or is burned as energy. The body preferentially burns fat stores since there is no glycogen to burn because there is no consumption of carbs.

It is hard to work for someone who drinks, and even worse
when they don't think they are an alcoholic. It really fries their brain, they are moody and unpredictable, and fly off the handle for no real reason.
My DH drinks 8-12 light beers a day, though he is trying to cut back - sm
but he's been doing it for over 20 years, so I would not be surprised if cirrhosis shows itself. He is in good health, for now. I don't buy him beer anymore since I was enabling him and he did ask me to stop, so that has helped a lot in him cutting back. I think we only have 1 beer in the house tonight so that is good!
PA dictates patient drinks "a gallon" of liquor a day.
I hear people drinking a pint or 1/5 a day, but a GALLON.  The guy is only 45.
If you try caffeinated drinks, make sure to use Equal or Splenda.
nm
I take MetaboLife, ephedra free. Love it, lots of energy. nm

My favorite gifts over the years were the homemade ones - congrats for having the energy

I agree, too. I'm just so tired of it all, don't have the energy left to argue with 'em any

Sugar is necessary!
I eat jelly belly jelly beans to keep me going and it works! Love working at home in my office off my bedroom and do not miss communting one bit especially with the winter upon us soon!
My son loves Monster drinks before football/basketball practice. I think they are nasty.
I don't drink coffee, but I have to have my Coca Cola first thing in the morning and one more halfway through day.  So I guess I am a little dependent on caffeine!
Milk and sugar

Some sugar maybe? Or is that for too salty?

After years of drinking diet drinks, I am off Nutrisweet, Splenda, etc. due to health reasons..sm
but I really don't want to drink sugar drinks/juices and cannot stand water!  Does anyone have any drink suggestions?  I am at a loss.  TIA
never mind. It is fingerstick sugar and KVO

Sugar Free Chocolates
Our Walmart carries Russell Stover Sugar Free Chocolates, and they are very good.
Sorry for typos... On a sugar high!

If you would try the Sugar Buster diet you'd

be surprised at the energy you will have.   You'll notice a difference in about 3 days.  I'm fixing to start it again because while I get up fine in the morning, after about 2 hours I hit a wall and it takes me about 2 hours to get past it where I can work again.   The only problem is I still have 2 hours left in my morning shift when I hit that wall so need to be working.

Anyway the diet will give you lots of energy - similar to being on energy drinks, it will be healthier for you and if you need to lose a few pounds you can do that too.

ROFL! Using sugar to fuel your MT fingers?
I will admit to having a jar of Bit o' Honeys and Hershey kisses on my desk, but I only have one per day.  I'm happy right where I am, too.  I love working at home.  We've got huge windows and a sliding glass door, and I have total control of the thermostat.  It's nothing like any of my other jobs where it was always too hot or too cold and we never got to see the daylight.
Coke and pretzels!! Sugar and Salt will

Sugar free candy suggestions? (sm)
My father-in-law is diabetic and we are visiting him tomorrow.  I'd like to find him some yummy candy before I leave town.  Wal-Mart is the closest store to the interstate that is 24-hour.  Any suggestions for what I could find there?  Thanks.
I especially agree with taking ALL sugar out of your diet.

Grape jelly and brown sugar????
Is that as a sauce or in the meatball mix, itself? Would you mind parting with the recipe, my curiosity is getting the best of me.
Be sure to keep areas dry and free of all sugar composites.

Boric acid plus same amount of sugar to
get the ants to take the boric acid (Mule Team Borax).  Works like a charm.  We had carpenter ants years ago, and exterminator wanted $700 back then to get rid of them.  As just a fluke, I was listening to a radio talkshow after the call to the $700 exterminator, and they mentioned Mule Team Borax with same amount of sugar applied around the house, and make sure children or pets will not get into it.
