I am in the South - any suggestions on going rate for editing Radiology Reports per report (exam)? I have seen charging prices from $1.25 to $2.00. Thank you for any input, it is greatly appreciated.

Would like to know what to charge a potential client that is using voice recog for their discharge summeries, but they want me to cut and paste it into the form on their system.
Any suggests on how to charge for this since I will not be listening to the actual dictation and doing it.

Radiology transcription, what type of reports are considered radiology
I have lot of experience with everything and I would like to know what exactly is considered radiology so I know if I qualify for that type of work? I've had many types that I think qualify for radiology.
Charging for printing/mailing reports
I just spoke to a doc interested in my services and one of the questions he asked was how much I would charge for printing and mailing the reports to him. The cost of paper and shipping is pretty easy to calculate, but the cost of ink as well as my time is a little more difficult. Is there some easy way to calculate this for an estimate or would some of you mind sharing your rates? I appreciate any help or advice on the matter. Thanks!

Pay per report (radiology)
1. If a radiologist dictates CT abdomen/pelvis and you have to combine the reports, do you get paid for this?
2. If the radiologists read reports from another facility and the transcriptionist has to type them in the system (a different way than the regular reports), do you get paid for these?
3. If you transcribe a report dictated by someone other than the radiologist (i.e., cardiologist), do you get paid for this?
I have found that the discrepancies in my production totals have to do with all three of the above. I don't believe I am being paid for any of them.
These may be good questions to ask when discussing employment. Unfortunately, I didn't think to ask before-hand. I'll repost to let you know when I get the answers from the company.

I have typed radiology for years also. I have been paid by report on one account where no matter if it was 5 lines or 100 lines, same amount. I also had an account that allowed me to upcharge for reports that were lengthy. If you are in a regular hospital setting, you will get tons of normals and rely heavily on "canned" dictation. This is a great bonus. Of course, each account has different guidelines.

Can anyone give me some comments? I just signed up to work part time with a radiology account and I love the dictators but you have to type in all the header information which is a lot. The information is picked up by going to a separate efax web site for each clinic and looking for the patient's name for that particular report. Some are hospital stamped and others are all handwritten and you have to keep jumping in and out of 3 different screens to type this all in; this is ridiculously tedious and very time consuming and it is very hard to get your line count up. Is this a normal thing to have to type all this information like that? It's the only thing that is not good with this account. The pay is 8 cents per line. Thank you for your comments.

So, to answer your question about it being normal, it all depends who you are typing for. If you are typing for an outside facility yes but if you are typing for a hospital no because most have a platform that MTs type the reports in. With this, you only have to type in the patients MR# or accession# provided, look to make sure the patient name match with what the dictator is saying, you then will get the header(s) for the report, select the appropriate header for that study and then you get a document to transcribe the report on that is formatted with the patient information. After typing the report, you then update it in their system and move on to the next, it’s that simple and easy. When typing for an outside facility, they have their MTs typing reports in a word processor program like Word for example using their template which you have to enter in all that header info.
It would be easier if you could print out the lists since it is time consuming having to go in and out of screens, that is ridiculous. As a radiology MT, you type many x-rays reports that are short and you really can’t make a line count when having to go in and out of screens. When I had worked for a company similar to who you are working for, I found myself having to really type hard to make my lines. I no longer work for that company and now work for a different company that I enjoy and I do not have to type in the header info, doing hospital radiology transcription. I make a little more per line and I make twice as more per pay period versus the other company because I have nothing to slow me down. I think MTs should be paid more than 8 cents per line or per report to compensate for their time when having to enter in header info and having to move between screens.

Radiology report rate
Before taking a radiology transcription position with a transcription company, I searched the archives to see if I could find an average rate per report for radiology. I found all kinds of rates that are being paid, but I thought that $1.40 per report was probably the average. The rate I accepted was $1.10 per report.
I have 24 years of experience in many different specialties. About half of my experience has been in acute care and the other half in radiology.
So far with this new job I have realized that about half of the dictators are OK while a couple of the ESLs take their voice away from the Dictaphone, especially at the ends of sentences. I spend time listening over and over to get those last two words! I've been wondering if I sold myself short.
I'd love to hear opinions from other MTs regarding radiology rates per report, with experience, yet new to company. I would also be grateful for any advice about the dictators who move away from the recorder (or loudly flip films during their dictation).

Radiology - per report or by line?
I'm switching from a company that pays radiology reports by the report, not line, to a company that pays radiology report by line, not report. Which is better? I've had so many looooong and foul reports, yet we get the same buck per report no matter how long it is. It would seem as tho getting paid per line is better - any thots?

You should be able to earn a good living even today with the right account.
Your experience will allow you to type about 140-15 exams a day on average, which a fast seasoned rad MTs can produce, you should be able to earn a good income.

Radiology preliminary reports
I need to hear from in-house radiology transcriptionists please. Once your report is typed, primarily on inpatients, do you send a preliminary copy of that to the patient's chart? Does your Radiologist have to read over all Radiology transcripts before signing and sending to the chart? Thanks for any info you can give.

Thanks for the info. I ask because our attending physicians are not getting reports on inpatients until sometimes 12 hours after admission. It seems to me that as soon as it is transcribed it should be sent in a preliminary form to the nurse's station and then the original with the radiologist's signature would be substituted for the prelim. Our Radiologist insists upon overreading every report and signing before ANY report is sent to the floor. Seems unnecessary to me and we are working towards preliminary reports. We have both electronic and paper records and in the very near future the radiologist will be e-signing the reports. I do the acute care transcription and seem to be getting a lot of dictation with "x-ray report is pending" on next day transcriptions and sometimes two days afterwards. I think we might have a bit of a struggle on our hands but hopefully he will see the necessity of the preliminary reports. (Or I might be forced to seek other employment) LOL

This rate is an insult to even a newbie. What trashy companies are out there now? I hope management took a 75% paycut when they went to this program, as well. It sounds like they are totally unqualified to run a business.

Types of reports in radiology transcription
Can someone tell me the types of reports there are in radiology transcription. I've transcribed for years and have experience transcribing so many things and I think I've got enough experience to transcribe radiology but not positive exactly what comes through to radiology transcriptions as I've always been considered acute care. Just curious about the types that come through to radiology.

We get paid $1.10 for radiology reports and my supervisor transcribes also sm
she pick all the easy doctors. How I know this is because if she doesn't finish them all she says "I have work that I couldn't finish I need someone to finish up." They are all the same doc no more than 3 lines or normals.
RIS radiology info system
I work in-house and hospital radiology is switching soon to new ADS/RIS system, supposedly warm and friendly to all other departments and people in hospital except MTs. We've been told that no expanders, short-cuts, or such can be used with this system. We're all going crazy, of course, knowing how many hundreds of times a day we use these time-savers. We've also been told that this program will not be counting our lines. Our supe doesn't get it at all since she has never transcribed a day in her life. If anyone has worked with this system, please share the good, bad, and the unbearable. TIA!
We have the ability to see each others # of reports and # of lines. We are to report to super
visor when one person has done 150 exams a day but only has a minimum of lines typed. In radiology, it tends to average out. They are watching it for morale's sake as well as they figure if the MT who jumps jobs is probably cheating elsewhere in the job or her/his life. Too many ethical ones these days to settle for a cherrypickers.

I am really considering presenting the idea that we measure productivity on minutes transcribed instead of lines. I don't know if management will go for it, but it seems like the best scenario considering all the trouble we've had.

Rad reports with dem info lists
My first remote job typing rad reports was for a local agency who provided such a great interface with the hospital, all I had to do was put in the job # from the dictaphone and all fields would fill in, then go right to typing in WP using all my short-cut keys. A lot of the reports were short, some long, and I wound up making really good $ that way for years. Then they went to VR (sigh). That's the way to go if you can get it; I won't put in multiple steps I'm not paid to to put in.  Good luck.

He later said the correct patient's name and I SWEAR to this day I made the changes but somehow the report when through without the correct patient and changes made. I still remember that incident.
I found out a long time ago that there are two kinds of editing.. one is editing MTs work (like QA)
and the other is editing as in VR. I have done VR editing, but when I put down this as experience on a resume, I was asked by the HR person if this meant that I had "edited" other MTs work. I think there is a lot of confusion out there and I wish they would just keep that as QA instead of calling it editing. Just be clear in what you want to edit as most companies that expect you to "edit" other MTs in a QA position do require you have a lot of experience. If you just going for VR editing, which is what Transcend has available and there are a few companies out there doing VR, none of which I think really require much experience as it is easy to learn. Hope I made some sense and it can be pretty confusing on how companies use the term "editing" thus it effects their expectations as far as experience goes.

because I'm able to produce more--if the company doesn't adjust the way production's figured down and down again to keep the account from going elsewhere (when that happened to me on EditScript with no explanation of why my income was dropping, I went elsewhere also).
The MR reports were being filed. Referring physicians/medical care providers reports were not.
This is a hospital radiology department with in-house MTs and a clerk who is in charge of the report distribution.
You do not need the 1099. You just need to report the income. Report the company/person ...sm
to the IRS for not sending out the 1099.
The two sentence normal reports will balance out the 3 page reports.

I charge the same amount for a "normal" report as for any other report.
You still have to listen to the dictation and change anything that's different. I had one woman try to pull this on me. She'd dictate, "Just pull up my normal, but change this, change that, switch that around, move that, add this, delete that, and change the other." Then she'd only want to pay me what equated to $.03 per line. She wanted 1:1 on her dictation to transcription ratios. I told her to take her cheap account down the road because I'm worth more than that.
Charging
The equipment you have will last for a long time so there is not that much to get into business. 13 cents sounds okay, 1 to 1 1/2 cent higher than I charge but I am out in the NW area. I do pick up of tapes, printing, delivering, use of "sticky paper" etc. But I average $30 to $45 per hour depending on the clinic. I haven't raised my prices in a while as I feel it is good money for me. I buy transcribers off E-Bay, some last for a long time, some not so long. I am planning on going digital in the next few months but I don't feel it is fair to pass that along to my clinents. It is my decision. Will still have to deliver back printed material. But you have to get those accounts and keep those accounts so charge a fair price -- the docs have more overhead than we do -- make a decent living and provide an extra decent service and you will do okay. I have said many times -- my accounts have been with me the oldest now 16 years -- psych account and my shortest is 5 years. They pay on time, have never had to ASK for my check, never a bounced check, and always Christmas bonus and a Birthday present. So that is why I keep my prices a little lower and spoil them a little but in the long run -- for five years now -- have not had to look for a new account/client and I know that they will not go overseas. I have had my share of those accounts that stayed with me for a little while until they got something cheaper and those that were just not for me and so that is why I will do most anything to stay where I am right now until I retire in 7 more years. I put in about 25 hours per week on these accounts as an IC and make $38 K per year. So for me it fits just right.
If you are only charging 11 cpl
They'll never know the difference, and it will make it worth your while. These doctors do not care about 65 characters and all that jazz. Just highlight the document, and charge them under line count. This will enable you to be compensated for any searches or extras that come along with the territory. They won't know the difference. Take it from me. You'll be fine, and you won't need to do all of this math. These people are cheating themselves using 65 character lines and the like. If it is an account you got on your own, then charge it like that. I'm living proof it works, and provide great TAT, and they won't mind paying you at all.

I was offered the opportunity to type for a doctor that is moving in wiht another group of doctors and need a transcriptionist. I have typed for other clinics in the area, but these physicians only paid by the hour.
I am wondering if it would be in my best interest to see if they wont pay by the line or character. I have never done this before. I work full time at a hospital and will be doing this at home in the evenings.

Could make that if I put in the hours but my priorities are the same. Would rather make less and have more time to do the things I enjoy but guess I'm fortunate to be able to make that choice.

I have my first interview with a Dr. tomorrow and I won't know what to say when he asked me how much! Should I charge by the line, and if so , how much or should I charge by the page? He will be my first Dr ever so I have no idea! I have been reading about lines but I just wanted to know what active transcriptionists are charging! Thanks.
