However, I think if you have instructed them that the can do minimal editing to make complete sentences and they are still not getting their punctuation and sentences right, you have a right to be frustrated.
Verbatim stinks! As a MLS, you're educated and trained to edit

Verbatim is verbatim, but I defintely to the little things to make the doc look better such as..sm
an eye problem instead of a eye problem.  I definitely wouldn't change too much.  Stick with what they say and only make changes when you absolutely think it is necessary.  I took a test last night and have an interview today and this is what I did.  FYI, I do clinic work.
Verbatim = verbatim......flag it...NM

you don't put your family at risk by taking in strangers. That's just plain foolish. There were over 3300 registered sex offenders in NO. Where are they now. In your community? Perhaps in your house? Good luck.

i have been through some rough times lately and had to apply for some help. there are signs, big signs, all over our offices saying "YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE LEGAL TO GET HELP". so we and our government do give them our benefits whether they are legal here or not. now that is messed up. i am helping to support them so they can take away my jobs and i can't even support my kids and yes i get benefits, wow $75 a month in food stamps which lasts not even a week in a household of 6. don't get me wrong, i am thankful for any help at the moment, but i get penalized for trying to work my tail off and still can't survive.

there was recently an article in our local newspaper where one of our local school districts tried to charge $1000 a year for each illegal student enrolled. it was bulked and the illegals got a lawyer to sue for discrimination. the school district merely stated that they had to HIRE extra teachers that could speak the foreign language just to teach these children and were trying to offset some of the expenses. ridicilous!! so again our taxpayers money is paying to educate illegals as well.
Aw come one give her a break. She said she was sorry and is willing to refund. Give her a chance to

do what is right.  If she fails to do what is right, then go about this in an adult way and not act like such a child.  "you suck"  That is so immature.

She is responding to you and you are eating her alive.  Why would she put herself out there to be treated like this if she didnt mean it.

I am really astonished at how people can act on here.  Would you treat people like this in person?  If you do, I cant imagine you having very many friends.

Remember we are all "HUMAN."

That's why we edit it. nm

they should edit their own.

Not only do I edit everything I read........sm

My husband says I "type" in my sleep !!  Jeezz.... like 8 hours a day isn't bad enough!

Don't know the average, but I get 13 cpl to edit VR. nm

Mine really is 2 - because I EDIT!
:)
EDIT? Since when did we have the education
that the physician does and where do you draw the line??
Edit Dictionary
Click on Tools, Options, Spelling & Grammar. On the Custom Dictionary window, select CUSTOM.DIC then click Dictionaries (to the right). When Custom Dictionary window opens, click Edit. Find the word you added and delete it. Save the file.
Depends on if doing 100% edit or not.
if you have to listen 100% and you have bad MTs, then it will be hard to get.
I'm sorry that you have crappy QA. I wish I had you to edit. sm

A good QA will not do that.  Where are you working that you have such bad QA personnel?  I'm not wanting to go to that company, lol.

Hope it gets better and you get helpful mentors.

Can expanders help if you mostly edit
reports rather than transcribe? That is what I do the most of.
You may be able to edit faster than
transcribe, but you are still doing twice the amount of lines for the same pay. After some time, the VR will start to recognize more terms and require less input. At that time, you may not be needed at all on those accounts, or you will be asked to accept less money. Time will tell!
Who better to edit reports

than a doctor?  It's a nice thought and I'd love to have a doctor as my QA person!  Unfortunately, editors aren't paid very well.  Most make less than $20 per hour.  The whole medical transcription industry has taken a major hit in pay thanks to off-shoring and AHDI (aka AAMT - which was supposed to be pro-MT, but instead is pro-greedy business owner).  Also, voice recognition has cut our pay.  Sometimes it even takes longer to edit a poorly worded voice file, but we are paid 3-4 cents per line.

If we can fight the off-shoring of all confidential patient information/medical records and cuts in pay for VR, the pay might eventually return - but I doubt it.

Verbatim for ESL too?
Geez, if that were the case on my account (not MQ), you wouldn't believe the crap I'd be putting out - "59 years old pt, denies of chest pain, comes to ER for short of breath," and I could go on and on.
Verbatim
I still don't understand, for example I have a doc who does about 20 lengthy bypass operations a week.  I have a 4-page "standard", that I just immediately pull up.  He never dictates it the same way twice, I just simply pull up my standard, put ears on, follow along and delete, insert, change and so on as he dictates, and that is as good as verbatim.
Since I am on verbatim also, I use whatever s/he says..
Jim for James etc....however, if the doc is clearly off track, he starts calling Mary by the name of Frank for instance (it has happened) then I flag it.
verbatim
The docs at a big teaching hospital I formerly worked for did not put punctuation marks after the word HOWEVER.  That's the way they wanted it and we were marked down if we added the comma.
verbatim, really?
Of course verbatim means typing EVERY SINGLE word they say, even when it's a side conversation, a snide comment, etc.  One thing I do that may not help them at all but makes me feel that I've at least let them know that I know - I enclose such words in quote marks to set them off from the real words.
Verbatim
As a private IC there was a prominent heart surgeon from Iran whose dictation I "cleaned up" constantly or he would have been the laughing stock of the community. Sometimes you have to "save face" for the client. If I worked for a national and they QA'd me from saving someone from a drastic error, I would immediately "quit." Another ESL went to hospital admin to tell them I was "his friend," I did not change the meaning but there were several instances when I had to make sense of things for him to cover the hospital's reputation. I was taught never to "change the meaning" and to put certain language "in quotes" although as an IC, I would always call the client first and they usually thanked me. When you work for another service, you can't do this, so it makes it very difficult.I guess you have to go with who pays you, but I would never, never type a senseless sentence.Good luck to those who have "bad QA assessments." They should know better.
verbatim
it's stupid and dangerous to type verbatim. Some hospitals stupidly insist on it cuz they believe we can't think for ourselves. They say "We've always done it that way."  Well God forbid you should TRY TO IMPROVE.  they say "well, you don't KNOW what he meant."  My answer to that is "well, YOU may not know, but I do!"  They just don't want to be bothered with having to actually think about it. Any decent trx with many years' experience and worth her salt GENERALLY knows what the doc really means but can't spit out, for one reason or another. I'm married to a doc - I know. But he DOES want us to leave blanks if we DON'T KNOW - better that than making something up, which he does see all the time from Spheris trxs. That's what happens when you hire people with one year of experience and don't monitor them closely, of which Spheris is guilty. And leaving a message for them on ESA doesn't work, cuz the doc won't see it till he goes to sign if off, and by that time, he has no earthly idea what he said. Nor does he care!
IF they got verbatim EXACTLY what they said,
they'd probably be in total shock at how ridiculous they actually sound when they dictate. Don't you just want to give them what they give you sometimes?
Verbatim
The problem is with the client profile. It should not ever have the word "verbatim" in it because the word by definition means "word for word" and we all know all of us from time to time and doctors especially speak garbage and have to be cleaned up. If with followed the client profile and transcribed "verbatim," screams would echo across the country. So I am all for removing that word from all the client profiles unless they truly want reports transcribed verbatim, word for word. We could do that, but it would not be much of a record.
verbatim, no BOS sm
Who are they? I would love to throw the BOS out the window, please e-mail me. Sick of all the new rules which don't amount to a hill of beans anyway at most times.
verbatim
I must be getting old. I'm finding it more and more difficult to "follow directions" as I age regarding this subject. I can't believe these younger physicians don't want us to fix the glaring errors. The real trouble is there's no one who will be the intermediary between the transriber and the doc, maybe, like back in the day. Way too many cooks stirring the broth and complicating what used to be a common-sense and less complicated situation, transcribing, that is.
i do verbatim too, but still BOS has
many points of reference that are helpful. I am one that hated the idea of a BOS, but when i finally succumbed, found there was a lot of useful info in it. Its not a bad idea to have a common reference point.
They may want verbatim, but if they are in
an acute care facility BOS overrides what they want.  JCAHO can give/withhold accreditation based on the medical records and they say follow BOS.  It isn't that is is an issue of style as much as it is a patient safety issue.
Verbatim
The hospital I work for now is a verbatim account, but we were told to spell out everything in DX, Impression, etc. I spelled out a lab abbrev and it looked so weird, but QA/Trainer told me to spell it out. Very contradictory so if it ever comes back as getting "dinged" for it I am going to tell QA who told me and they better not takes points off my audit.
Excuse me but isn't your job to edit reports?
What would you rather spend your day doing???? If you are an editor I would think editing would be your job!
Couldn't think of anything intelligent to say, so you edit?
What a dimwit!
Edit Script, my first time doing VR
What is the average line count some of you get with VR??? Any suggestions this is my first job without straight typing?
I'm well aware we edit..but someone on here stated

How the heck do you edit a typo??

Question for folks who QA/Edit
I'm an IC QA person for a company who uses Editscript. I spend precious time writing down job# and calculating the number of lines for each report. Is this system not capable of tracking the number of reports I edit or the number of lines?

Seems like the employer would prefer a software that tracks this info so they can ensure that the IC's are billing accurately. Any opinions on this?
I, too, edit Indian files ; they are getting better! sm
While sometimes there is something funky, I have to say that they are getting better and better all the time. When they first started on the account, yeah, they were bad; however, it has only been about 4 to 5 months and have improved 10 fold.
QA persons edit. If it is 100% listen, that
depends on the MT and on the account. Usually phys ther reports are lengthy (and boring), but not hard, but you do have to know the terms. I do not do editing by the line. I would say 500 lph is upward thinking. I know years ago when I edited by the line (then being paid 6 cpl), I can say absolutely that I never earned more than $12 an hour (that was years and years ago). I had Indian MTs though and the worst of the worst ESL dictators but I swore then, never again.

Line pay is unfair to QA/editors but many companies try to squeeze the blood from a turnip. There is much to do in QA.

BTW, you put NM on your post making me think there was nothing in it
I think it takes longer to edit VR.
When you type, you start with a blank page.  Excellent and taught that way.  Editing can cause the eyes to get lazy - medical words tend to start looking like medical words.  I think it takes more of an eye to find errors.  I have done VR and did not like using hot keys.  I guess I'm from the old school.
Im sure you are a peach to edit but I don't train, sorry
Im sure you are a peach
Independents who must edit their own work
I spent a few minutes reading the thread re QA complaints that MTs do not adequately edit/proof their work. As an independent contractor with my own clients I must proof my own reports and be responsible for my own product. The buck stops here.

I worked for a national once for a grand total of 3 months. It was not to my liking at all. First of all,let me say this, my clients have never heard of BOS. I have been an independent for 11 years and not one of them knows anyone by the name of BOS. I prefer to use the Oxford grammar site if I have any questions re grammar, punctuation, etc. Also, I ask my clients how they want their reports to be punctuated and edited. The client is the ALWAYS right, regardless of BOS. I will suggest certain punctuation and grammar, but if they insist on having it a certain, well so be it. They are paying me to transcribe their reports the way they want them done.

My 3 month experience with the national and their red/yellow highlighting happy, BOS addicted QA department, had me running for the hills and back to my own clients, which of course was much more profitable. I am quite computer literate, can navigate the internet, Google and even read a reference book.

In my opinion, if QA could find a way that was a little less like a dissaproving school teacher and more like a mentor, then perhaps the MT's would be more appreciative and welcome any assistance offered.
Yes - go to Tools, Options, then Edit tab
On the column on the right side, unclick "when selecting, automatically select entire word."
Does anyone edit Nuance Dragon

I have a physician who would like me to transcribe from handwritten progress notes, but I am wondering if I should invest in a VR program to make this easier on me.  I am wondering if anyone uses this software as an MT?  All opinions are welcome including through e-mail!

what is good hourly for edit/MT
got offered $13-15 an hour - part time, no benes, driving 50 minutes round trip, to do editing after dictations are sent to outside MTSO, occasional MT stat reports, personal reports, etc.  I thought that was kind of low (14 yrs experience).  Confirm or re-educate me please.
I would like to edit Indian work
what companies hire you to edit work from India? I have never been without work, but would be interested in doing some of this editing. If you know of companies, please post them. thanks
Client wants to start VR..Wants me to edit...sm

Ok, whew, I've researched until I'm blue on this one. Learning a lot here.

I have a question for you all.  I have a potential client who wants to start recording his dictation with Dragon Naturally Speaking and then have me do the editing.

I'm just not getting this.  Is there a MTSO that provides both VR and file transfer where I can edit?  Is there an obvious answer to this, and I'm just so new to this field I'm not seenig it?  How would I get both the word document and voice file to me so that I can edit it remotely?

Any numbers to call or pointers would be great!

I edit to make it 100% accurate....

You want lineage as well as speed.....I would do Hemoglobin is 13, hematocrit is 45, and platelets are 200,000 (whatever is in the CBC).  I do the same for the chemical profile.  Sodium is 135, potassium is 4.2, chloride is ...etc....

but they have to say *is* plus *and* for me to do that.  I will never just insert extra words to inflate, but the word *is* - if they are dictating that to you...that is 2 more character spaces.....more is better for you.

Sometimes MDs want them separated.  I have a couple of dictators what want individual sentences.  Hemoglobin is 13.  Hematocrit is 45.  Platelets are 200,000.  I usually give them what they want.....as long as it is 100% accurate.

I get paid less to edit than to MT. I shouldnt
