I could not disagree with you more about the ESL recognition. I live in Miami and most of my doctors are of Cuban origin. Their Spanish is not Castillian Spanish but a combination of local idioms, Spanish and English. They mumble. Numbers are totally unclear. Lab values unless you know the normal values mainly cannot be determined, same with dosages of medications. If the Spanish doctors are so easy, why isn't every hospital in Miami using VR??? My hospital is a small privately owned hospital. The owner's son is American speaks extremely clear and says very little in his reports. It worked for him, and that is why the push went on for VR. I was told our job picture would change and we would become editors so I thought at worst, I would have to let a few people go but most of our work would continue. Then I was blind sided in May that EVERYTHING had been given to Dictaphone including the transcription. The hospital has been convinced that after several months their transcription cost will be zero. The system went in a month ago. We have continued to do all of the most difficult dictations and radiology and pathology. The reports are coming back 2 and 3 days after dictated. The radiologist is totally unhappy and insisted we continue. My rad Transcriptionist can do 30 reports or more an hour. The work is turned around immediately. We shall see. I must have sent samples to over 25 transcriptionists and not "ONE" could understand my doctors.
