In Reply to: ESL Dictators-I must be backwards - Not a speed typist
I used to dread ESL's years ago, but took them on as a "challenge." I know it's difficult, but once you have mastered their particular dialect from their country of origin, you'll have it down pat for the rest of your professional career. If I had difficulty, I always forwarded to the diagnoses to be sure I knew what they were talking about in the body of the report. Within a short period of time, I found it was not only a challenge, but the dictators were extremely grateful that I took the time and had the patience. I did not leave blanks in their dictation, or as one dictator proclaimed, "This lady doesn't leave big holes in my dictations." Hang in there! It's like everything else in life - you get back what you put in, or you reap what you sow, etc. Just keep trying, you will be rewarded ten-fold in the future. Being self-employed, it helped a great deal to be able to handle anything or anyone who came into my office. I hope you work for someone who will be patient with you and you with them. Don't be discourged. Mary from RI.
