In Reply to: Depressing reports - A little bit sad
poor old man trying to make it on his own without outside help. Poor soul nearly froze to death. He was brought in lethargic with pneumonia and admitted. Paramedics stated the pt was living in deplorable conditions, sleeping on a floor, no food, etc.

I get extremely car sick
I posted on the gab board and while I was typing this message moved, so am copying my reply here too in case the other message gets lost -
I get extremely motion sick in a car. I cannot read at all. I can't even read maps to help husband in areas we don't know (can't tell you how many arguments we still have over this and it's been 25 years), and if there are a lot of road signs I can't read them, therefore I would imagine that if you can't read due to motion sickness typing would be hard, because as an MT I am always reading what I type to make sure there are no typo's or I don't hit a wrong key. A couple years ago we took a drive to the Mendocino coast in California. Lots and lots of curves. I thought maybe I had grown out of it (motion sickness), but my DH had to keep pulling over. I was so sick it was awful.
If you take a product like dramamine it will make you drowsy (I should know cos I'm the Queen of Dramamine) Taken enough of it at different times and I end up sleeping through the trip if I take it. I'm not sure if they have any non-drowsy. A lady did tell me once that I should eat a little carbohydrate before I travel and that might help. Again, a big "might" and I don't want to take that chance.
I think the biggest problem with typing while a vehicle is moving is the constant movement of the keyboard. If you go over a bump or hit a rock or swerve, your sure to hit a wrong key. I'm not sure I know of any employer who would allow this. I'd be more apt to be looking at the scenery rather than concentrate on what I'm typing.
Can I come to your house? I miss wood heat (sm)
That was our only heat source for over 20 years. It started out as a backup heat source, but soon became our only source. We lived in a 5 room house back then and it heated the whole place. If it was 5 degrees outside, it was wonderful to walk into the house. It felt like a cozy warm blanket wrapping around you as soon as you opened the door. I was never cold. We kept a metal box fan behind it to blow the heat through the rest of the house, and a 30 gal soup pot on top filled with water for humidity. I even cooked a lot of meals on top. Had a whole set of cast iron pans, including the dutch oven. Meals were great. The only thing I didn't like was the "dirt" from the wood.
We now have forced hot air. I hate it. I'm always cold. I still have the wood stove but it's in the storage shed. Can't talk DH into installing it in the house. The only time I am warm is when I go up to the garage where my DH has an old Kenmore apartment size wood/coal kitchen stove that I bought for him a couple years ago. Guess where I spend all my free time...
Adware is extremely limited. Try Trend Micro House Call.

DH is a university professor. We were in the poor house while he was...sm
...in school getting his postgrad and doctorate, but lots of years of hard work and working together for the same goals has paid off.
I AM SICK, SICK, SICK AND TIRED
Of bad dictators and QA that takes up for them!!!! I am sick to death of:
1. Doc saying paragraph after every sentence.
2. Docs never dictating the first name of doc they are writing to.
3. QA asking us to insert certain sentences in certain places for certain doctors who do not dictate them.
4. Docs wanting their own specific headings but not dictating them.
5. Docs who ramble, never saying period.
6. QA asking us to **fix** their grammer, mistakes, fragmented sentences, and verb tenses and sometimes when we do, we are docked points for **not transcribed as dictated.**
7. QA not wanting anything sent to them, stating **researach medical terms and facilities you are not familiar with.** If they are not there to help us out, what are they doing there????
8. Docs, NPs, and PAs who do not know how to dictate, pronounce, or spell.
9. QA asking us to use BOS, but not knowing it themselves.
10. Doing work I do not get paid for.
Before QA became involved, in years gone by, if a doc's dictation was awful - then that is what he got for transcription and more times than not, they would straighten up and make a better effort. Not now - we or QA has to almost do the dictation for them!! They are the ones with the medical degree - not us. What happened to us just transcribing what is dictated. Why can't they be responsible for what prints out?? If someone could let them know how much trouble their dictation style causes, it would cut my transcription time in half. My list could go on and on. It is a terrible time to be thinking about getting out of the business, but if this crap keeps up - I have to give it some serious consideration. The job just AIN'T what it used to be.
poor, poor management
Line count stealing, no help, rude management, you name it SS has it if it is bad!!!!!!! Run, run, save your life.
You do not need the 1099. You just need to report the income. Report the company/person ...sm
to the IRS for not sending out the 1099.
I charge the same amount for a "normal" report as for any other report.
You still have to listen to the dictation and change anything that's different. I had one woman try to pull this on me. She'd dictate, "Just pull up my normal, but change this, change that, switch that around, move that, add this, delete that, and change the other." Then she'd only want to pay me what equated to $.03 per line. She wanted 1:1 on her dictation to transcription ratios. I told her to take her cheap account down the road because I'm worth more than that.
Oh, a report just came in. A report actually just slid in, can you believe it. Hip Hip Hooray. I
had better get that sucker typed before it gets out of ONE MINUTE TAT.
106 but its a dry heat.

Heat or not sm
I've never cared to associate with nasty people and nasty people seem to dominate most MT boards.
heat
Im so sick and tired of this heat. This is our third heat wave. Supposed to be at least 104 today and 106 tomorrow. I cannot wait until the fall. I would give anything for rain right now. Urggggggg.. *smile*
In the heat???
I'm not the one who posted and I don't know where she lives, but have YOU ever tried walking 3 blocks when the temp is close to 120???
perhaps it is the heat? --sm
I don't know if it as hot there as it has been across the whole nation, but maybe he/she wants to get into some air conditioning, as it is too hot outside...just a thought. poor thing. Sorry you were scared though.
Take our heat
Too bad we can't have the best of both. Was 103 here yesterday in Portland, OR and we very rarely get that warm this early in the year. could not work after 1 o'clock yesterday because of the heat, so got up at 4 this morning. Better today low 90's but still plenty warm.
Good luck to you being from Oregon I know about the rain but right now wouldn't mind a little.

With the heat, I'm going to try nights
I think my favorite account is getting cleaned out first thing AM, so I'm going to try nights for a bit. Starting now!
Those of you who do nights regularly, any secrets to staying perky?
heat and animals
Thank you for keeping your animals inside. I do too. I have three dogs, four cats and two birds and they are right by my side. I do take the dogs out in the morning and hose them down, then they come into the house (what a mess..no biggie, I can clean it up, ya know?).
p.s.: careful not to heat too much
Now that fall is here and I'm having to use heat my
face is dry and itchy. I've started using a humidifier to add moisture in the air, but I need a lotion too. I have very sensitive skin too. I've used several OTC lotions and they haven't helped much. Looking for a good moisturizer for all over, but mostly for the face.
Anyone else have anxiety using heat?
I've had to turn on the old heater this past week and I must admit I'm feeling really nerrrrrvous about getting my bill! I'm afraid to keep it on for fear of a thousand dollar charge! Anyone else with "heating bill anxiety"?
Wood heat, here...
Good thing. It was 6 degrees here yesterday morning. Have enough wood stockpiled to last through this winter and halfway into next and I have a +2600 square foot farmhouse. Also have the LP tank full in case the furnace kicks in.
Now, before I pat myself on the back too hard, let me say that wood heat is a LOT of work and time-consuming and very very very messy. It's almost like a second job in some ways.
Wood heat here too
I'm so glad we got an outdoor wood furnace a few years back. We haven't had to buy/use LP for 4 winters now. I'll put up with the work as long as I don't have those high oil prices anymore.
Heat anxiety
I live in AZ so our big bills are in the summer for the AC. I moved back to upstate NY for a few years and am back in AZ now. When in NY I almost froze and had huge electric bills, so I bought a little electric space heater and put it under my desk. It kept me toasty all day and I didn't have to crank up the heat in the entire house to stay thawed out. Give it a try! Heating costs have gone up everywhere this year because the poor oil companies really are hurting for money (HA). The little space heater will really do the trick and keep you toasty all winter. What part of the country are you in?
Heat anxiety--here's what I'm trying sm
Hubby wants the furnace on 67--too cold for me but we settled on 68. Last year we had it at 70. Our windows this year have all new caulking and loose windows are sealed shut, but that didn't seem to be enough. I bought a bunch of those 4.00 fleece blanket throws 50 x 60 " from Big Lots and some cafe rod clips from Walmart, enough to adequately cover all 20 windows. I cut the blankets in half and put 7 clips on each half, hung them on a standard rod and they cover the windows adequately for me. If you want more fluffiness, use 1 blanket and 14 rod clips for each panel. It really helps in keeping the sun out of my office which is way too hot during the day being on the south side but then gets cold at nights when I work, so the blankets keep out the drafts. So far, so good. We'll see if it helps on our gas charges. So far, they have us on budget billing and our bills are 72.00 a month. Hopefully, they will go down a little more. I'm going to try leaving them up in the summer to see if they keep out the heat and keep in the air conditioning. I priced the thermal rubber backed drapes and they were about 25.00 to 50.00 a window-a little bit more than I can spend right now.
Is it the Texas heat?
I think we may have worked for the same lady! She never had the AC on in her office except for a unit in the room with the phone equipment to keep it cool, so my husband used to say that it must be the heat frying her brain cells. If it isn't the same lady, it's a real clone. I don't work for her anymore, either!
lighting and heat
Those are excellent ideas! I'm printing all these ideas and will check into some of them. You're right....moving the office would be the most reasonable (and free!).
heat/electricity, etc.
My office is upstairs in my house. I work nights, so I have the settings on my automatic thermostat lower at night to be more efficient. However, with the office upstairs, it is always warmer (heat rises), so even when the rest of the house is cooler, I am just comfy.
Also, have heard that when not using the computer, it is still using energy if it is turned on, so when going to be away from computer for a while, remember to turn it off.
Also, in my master bedroom, I have found this room gets very cold, especially at night on cold nights. I think this is caused by the fact that it is in the corner of my house, with 2 large outside walls, and is also located above the garage (which is colder). I purchased a small electric (porcelain I think or something like that) for about $30, and I don't think it uses that much electricity. It has a thermostat system, so will cycle on and off to keep the room at the set temperature. This works great for this room, as I keep the door closed.
Good luck!
A billion degrees, but it's a dry heat.
temp+heat index= HOT!
Heat index here Sunday (according to National Weather Service) was 126°! 97° temp and 77% humidity = 126. Not sure how they got that figure, but it was during the county fair parade, and some high school kids marching barely made it the 3 mile route. Kids and I escaped to a movie theater!
Considering the heat index is 107 here today....
Shorts and a tank top work for a lot here today. I myself wear shorts and tank tops that I find from DKNY, Liz Claiborne, etc. So they aren't junior clothing and are appropriate. Just because I am 47 doesn't mean that I need to put a sack over my head or this body which is in great shape, considering I've had four children, and a hysterectomy. Still a size 8 and will continue to be a size 8. :)
Management just can't stand the heat
You are one who seems to be spewing venom here. You are the one who needs to "get over yourself." Fortunately, this is America and we have a right to express our feelings, just as you have the right not to read them.
95 with heat index of 100, but hope
is on the way, cool front due tomorrow with lows in the 50s and highs in the 80s.
yup, 52 here and between m-pause and wood heat
sometimes i purt near melt!!
Not a bit, especially here in the northeast. Heat is a way of life. nm

Heat anxiety solution
I have "electricity" anxiety all the time and especially in winter when I use my electric heater. What I do is shut off the power (at the breaker box) to my electric water heater. I turn it on a few minutes before I'm going to wash dishes or take a bath. I also keep all the lights off except in the room I am working in. I am single so I am able to do this without an argument from anyone.
have used wood heat for 20+ years
and we have moved a lot, so had to install numerous times. My husband does it. You can spend a ton of $ on a stove, but we prefer the little inexpensive 'box' type stove. They radiate heat well, you can cook on them, control the 'draft', etc. THey put out a lot of heat. If you have a stove that needs a blower to distribute heat, you'll be in a lurch when the power goes out. Also, your stovepipe must go i think it is 4 ft taller than the high point of your roof in order to draw the air correctly. You must get the fire hot enough often to burn out the creosote or keep it from building up. Learning how to build a fire can be challenging -- but once its going, the coals generated will make it easy to keep going. and please make sure you use smoke alarms on each floor.
Ice first, heat later. Continue to move around some.
Bed rest is not actually recommended anymore. Avoid riding in moving vehicles as that will be the most painful time, trust me.
I think those descriptions are for electric and gas (heat)...
Not internet. Internet is different because it is not based off of square footage. To me, that would sound like because my living room is larger than my office, I use the internet more in my living room, which is untrue.... Plus, I never use the internet in my bathroom or kitchen.
I write off the percentage that I use it, that is how my tax guy said to.... I mostly use the internet for personal use about an hour a night and a couple hours on weekends. Otherwise it is work only. That is where I get the figure for 75% work, 25% pleasure use.
If you are careful with putting the correct report in the correct report shell and patient, you will
not have any problems. I only take away this option when someone is careless. There can be NO room for error on this. One mistake can be very serious. Many do it well though, so just double check and you will be fine.
Extremely helpful - thank you!!! nm
nm
It was extremely perverted.
Be grateful they took it off. I would repost whatever you had to say.
this is extremely sad. I started on with MQ
0.0775 cpl. You're only going to get desperate newbies with that pay. If you want an "experienced" MT as you say, pay them what their experience is worth.
They are extremely close.
From what I know of both companies, oddly enough it is MQ catching up to changing its operations to par with Spheris with the new Rewards Plan.
However, while Spheris has already had their compensation/benefits package settled for a while, they seem to be aggressively pursuing purchasing other companies and increasing their offshore entities.
MQ seems to be focusing on it's US clientele.
MQ has ASR and if Spheris has it, I haven't heard of it yet. I would imagine ASR came in with a recent purchase if Spheris has much in the way of it right now.
You are welcome.
ok now I see it - extremely annoying. NM

I am extremely careful
Geesh, June. I am extremely careful, and my girls have been told not to open the door unless they know the person on the other side. You know children do not always listen. I had been down the hall using the bathroom, and my 13yo thought the 16yo had stepped outside and locked herself out. Since it was a soft knock and a familiar one, she thought she knew who was on the other side. When she realized it wasn't who she thought it was, she shut the door right away and came and told me there was a man in our garage. We've lived here for 10 years, and this is the first time anyone other than family has knocked on that door. There isn't a lot of crime in our area, and we leave our garage door most of the time. We never have any problems. I know...there's always a first time....never say never and all that...but I am careful.
A couple of weeks ago, religious solicitors walked up to our door. I was working, and my 16yo opened the door to them because they were women. Not anyone she knew, but she opened the door because she didn't find women to be intimidating. That's why I say children don't always listen to what you say.
After those Missouri boys were abducted in rural areas, I've talked to my girls again about being careful, beiing aware and watching out for each other.
My hubby thinks I'm paranoid. I'm the type to keep my doors locked at all times, day or night, and he thinks it's silly because we're in a rural area and probably fine. When I dispute the point with stories from the news, his rebuttal is that a locked door will not keep out someone who wants in. Maybe not...but they'll be a lot more noisy trying to get past that locked door than they would an unlocked door.
It works extremely well for me. sm
I am in a very, very rural area as stated; all woods. I was also told it works as good as your cell works. Our cells are "patchy" in this area, but are fine in our home and we have all metal roof too, which usually causes outages but not in our case. I was constantly frustrated with Wildblue and no signals on bright sunny days even. Like I said, in 3 months I have not had one problem with losing a signal and I am on the net 24/7 almost literally, lol. I know in my case, they gave a 30-day refund in case it didn't work out for you. So I would say give it a try first and if it doesn't pick up well for you, then look into HughesNet. The wireless was the BEST move I have made period and I am extremely happy. I did call tech suport on it when first setting up and the hold was very minimal and tech was very helpful. I was fixed and up and running within 5 mins with AT&T. Now I will say my first bill was also about $170 as they bill in advance so I had to pay first month and then 2nd month, but to get started all I paid was for the USB thing itself. Oh, if you do go with wireless, don't get the "cards", get a USB one that way you can change it from different computers and be mobile with it rather than just working in 1 computer. Say if you have laptop and desktop you would switch the USB between computers and if you got a "card" it would only work in one of the computers, the one which you bought it for.
Anybody else notice extremely low IC pay?
I have always worked as an IC acute care transcriptionist. My line rates have always exceeded what an MT can make as an employee, which is only logical because as an IC, you have to pay your own taxes, no benefits, etc. I always peruse job listings on this and other boards, just to see what's out there. Lately, I have noticed a disturbing trend. It seems like most MT companies/MTSOs are only offering .08/line for IC. Unless that is for a gross line (and goodness knows gross lines are a thing of the past), that is outrageous!! When you consider that an IC has to pay approximately 15% of his/her income in self-employment taxes alone, that means a net rate of about .068/line! While .08/line for employee status is still low (in my opinion), at least social security and medicaid taxes are paid, and there are usually benefits, PTO, etc.
If I were an MTSO, I would be embarrassed to offer .08/line to any quality IC MT. For a newbie, sure. But for any MT worth his/her salt, .08/line for IC is an insult.
I know that competition with overseas firms makes it seem necessary for American transcription companies to lower their MT pay in order to be competitive. However, American MTSOs will never be able to compete solely on price; overseas transcription companies will always be able to do it cheaper. It is a slippery slope that has already lead to the failure of many American transcribing firms. The question for American transcription companies should not be can we do it cheaper, but can we do it better??
In today's market, American MTSOs need to stand their ground and quit underselling themselves and undervaluing the value of their American transcription workforce. American MTSOs need to start marketing themselves differently, stressing quality, accuracy, dependability, security, and good old fashioned patriotism. I don't care how low the overseas companies can bid a job. There is no way they can compete with the quality and accuracy of American transcriptionists. I myself have worked for an MTSO who lost a contract to a firm in India, only to have them beg her to take them back a few months later because the quality of the overseas work was so horrible. I am quite sure this is not an isolated incident.
While there are always going to be hospitals that will try to get by on the cheap, there are also hospitals and doctor's offices who realize that they get what they pay for and will put quality first. If you compare transcription services to cars, overseas work is the Hyundai while American transcriptionists are the Cadillac. Cadillac would never slash its prices to compete with the cheaper imports. They know that they have to cater to their own market, people with more discriminating tastes.
I am fortunate enough to work for a company that realizes the value of its services and takes the stronger, wiser stance. They are not after contracts at any cost. They will pass up work if they have to bid ridiculously low just to get it. And guess what? Any bid that only allows you to offer your IC transcriptionists .08/line IS TOO LOW!! And any quality MT is not going to stick around at those rates.
I find it is extremely so! sm
THe other thing is, unless you are ultra fast or so wonderful you are in high demand, you won't make a living at it. I know some cake decorators and it is high pressure. I could make and decorate 3 cakes in a day, of the 2 or 3 layer variety, but they wanted 10 or 12 just the decorated part. I found that daunting myself.
I can only make one of my signature cakes a year (heart shaped cake covered with handmade, real buttercreme roses...think about 150 to 200 roses) about once a year and I need to have time off of work to recuperate anymore. My hands ache and ache!
You are EXTREMELY lucky...
I can't remember the last time I even took a day off, let alone a week or weeks. I've often put in way more hours in a week than you say you work regularly and still have never come close to the kind of money you're making.
You would need to be extremely fast on your
computer in order to straight type 3000 lines per day. I never did that many and said before, used to have people seek me out in the office as they would hear me typing fast and they wanted to watch me. Straight probably for me never got over 2500 if that. Having said that, had 2 bosses at different times and would be willing to say both probably consistently got that per day. Your speed, I would think, would have to be around 150 to 160 or higher. Can you do that?
Sure, come on over. We're getting a break in the heat today.
