I type for a clinic into their EMR system -- Practice Partner and since I have been doing this, two other clinics have approached me about doing it from the doctor's dictation. Even with all the "templates" and "quick saves" they were taking one to three hours to do their charts where now they dictation on their way home, I go in three days a week or work at home and type into their system. It actually takes longer to type into the EMR as you are clicking and downloading a lot of normals and that takes an extra 60 to 120 seconds per patient and for 20 patients per doc does take time but they pay me by the hour. Sugges to your doc that you would like to help get him set up on the system, someone has to enter all their templates, etc. and since you have been doing this for him you know what they are and charge a consulting fee per hour. That way you can also learn the system. Tell him that if he finds it too time consuming that you know you can transcribe directly into the system and are willing to do so at an hourly rate since you cannot do line counts on the system. I do sometimes type in word and then transfer over the info. Anyway, keep the door open anyway you can because I think we will be here for a long time. The docs found out that the last 15 months I have been there that they are seeing 25% more patients and actually spending less hours at the clinic. So that pays for me.
