There are numerous studies presently
taking place concerning this relatively new medication. Below is a single example of Fosamax prescribing from the "norm." If I were typing that report, I would type it verbatim and not flag/question the physician's dictation.
FOSAMAX DOSING
The prevention dose is 5 mg daily, the treatment dose is 10 mg daily. Alendronate should be continued indefinitely. Although discontinuation of the alendronate does not result in the rapid bone loss seen with HRT discontinuation, a gradual decline does occur, so some maintenance therapy should be utilized. The dosing may be modified once optimal bone mass is restored. One could then consider the 10 mg dose to the 5 mg prevention dose daily, or perhaps to 10 mg every other day. A once weekly dose of 70 mg or a twice-weekly dose of 35 mg is presently being evaluated as an alternative-dosing regimen but has not yet been approved. (Study results pending).

using computer with generator for power outage ??
has anyone used a generator to power their computer during a power outage ? I am assuming the high-speed cable would work during a power outage (our provider had to go check but he seemed to think, yes, it would). I am thinking a small generator for this purpose might be a good idea as I do not think battery backups last very long ? Any ideas on powering a computer for, say, 6 hours ?? Thanks in advance.

Right now I have a small hutch style computer desk. It is tooo small. I am waiting for my new u-shaped desk with hutch to come in. Check out computerdesksnmore.com. They have some good buys online.
SPi is but they recommend against upgrading
Several different tech support people with SPi have told me NOT to upgrade to Vista as it has a LOT of bugs and issues; they all said that our software (ChartNet) is compatible but that they recommend NOT upgrading to it as it will cause all sorts of problems.
You should probably let Atlanta know about that. Maybe it is from people upgrading or something.

Help on upgrading drug reference
Hi all,
I am seriously in need of upgrading my drug reference. I am still using Quick Look electronic 2004 and so many new drugs have been introduced in the past 4 years. What would you recommend?? I just checked the Stedman's site and really cannot afford that kind of money right now. Do any of you recommend a hard copy book that would keep me updated??? Thank you for any suggestions.

to succeed in what I do. When I first started as an MT I told myself that I would do anything, including working until midnight if I had to, to do well at this position. I guess I have a work ethic above most others, but that is from too many years of others deciding the outcome of my future and keeping me from being who I wanted to be or from achieving any of MY goals in life. My work comes first, over and above everything else. I begin working about 7 or 7:30 am and work straight through. I take two breaks, one to eat something around noon and one to go and get my mail at around 3. When I eat though, I usually make a small snack, sandwich, etc. and eat while I continue typing. No TV, no music, no phonecalls unless important and job related. These interruptions slow me down thereby costing me time, lines, and money and to me that is just not acceptable. This is more than just a job to me. I love what I do. I have worked hard to get where I am today and I refuse to let anything or anyone threaten that. It is all in a mindset, I guess. but it is just how I do things and I am not recommending it for anyone else. I do get burned out sometimes, but usually a nice weekend away from it all brings me right back to the helm. Living comfortably on my own volitions is my top priority and work allows me that, so work is my top priority....above anything else. But that's just me.

You can use highlights such as bold and underline in SH but not autocorrect. Autocorrect also has a limit of size -- once you have reached that limit, you are unaware of it, as it arbitarily just deletes the oldest entry to allow you to add a new one, or it will just stop working. I learned this a long time ago. Also, you can move your SH folder and all dictionaries to a new computer much easier than you can autocorrect. Autocorrect is only for WORD, I have yet to find a program that SH does not work on, so all of your expansions can be used in excell, note pad, Email programs, etc.
I have been using SH going on 10 years, and I would not trade it for anything different. Best money I have ever spent.

Apple Scruff--Could you elaborate how you initially got started--did you follow a specific diet? With a sedentary MT job, did you force yourself to exercise much? A "scare" really is a tremendous motivator (it took a "scare" to get me to stop smoking, but I am not having success taking off approximately the same amount of weight that you succeeded at losing) Thanks for your tips.

 and they are just as nasty as my office has been becoming lately with everyone worrying about their jobs now that our accounts have been switched to the NE region out of the local office.
DMV/Traffic Court
Out here in CA, if you have unpaid tickets, a warrant is issued. So when you show up at DMV or the court house, you most probably will have to pay right away or explain to a justice why you need an extension to pay. They probably wont want to hear the argument that it was your sister cause you dont have proof. You will be responsible and then you can kick your sisters butt or sue her. I have a friend who had outstanding speeding ticket and the cops came to her house, arrested her and she had to spend the weekend in jail till Monday when her boyfriend was able to bring the money to the court house.
Out here, we have cameras at stop lights and on different roads..So when someone is exceeding the speed limit or goes through a red light, the camera takes a picture. You never see an officer, you receive the ticket in the mail and they have the picture for proof. Good luck to you.

I really hope that they make it a law in all states that you cannot talk on your cell phone and drive a car at the same time. Now mind you, I work at home, so I am not out in traffic all the time, but so far, I have almost been killed by a man driving a big truck, going through a red light and almost hitting me, a girl on the phone rear end my car, and my son was sitting at a red light on a major highway, the guy behind him was on the phone doing 40 MPH, rear-ended my son's F150 truck, 1,000.00 damage to his truck, but the guy's Toyota was totalled and he got out of his car and said to my son "sorry, I wasn't paying attention, I was on the phone." Duh - get off the phone and pay attention, please, it is so dangerous. What really scares me are the young kids driving, putting eyeliner and lipstick on and on the phone, i think we used to all do that at home in our room/bathroom. Lately, i have seen a lot more people pulled oer to the side of the road and talking, but then, sometimes they are not over far enough. i think phones should just be used for emergencies, like when you break down, or are stuck in traffic, then use one, but hey that is only my opinion, but makes sense to me.

rising gas prices and general misery in the world. Then my crummy job doesn't seem so bad! Count your blessings!

I always say, no, there was no traffic today. Oh, yeah, the dog was in my way and I tripped over him. Yep, he is just jealous. I could never deal with rush hour traffic again. I just watch for the dog.
It's called Internet Traffic
There is a download wait time due to being a "free user" trying to access the download. Encountering internet traffic is not unheard of. There are plenty of websites that offer their users a limited amount of bandwidth per month, this just happens to be one of them, add on the fact that this is also an internet prime time and also that these links are posted on a worldwide message board, and hey you do the math.
Sounds like exactly how I feel. MQ has a tremendous amount of unhappy people and could care less.

The Word board doesn't have much traffic for
many reasons. Some of us are tired after working our own shifts and don't want to feed answers to people who are equally as capable of looking them up as we are. I use entirely Internet based references. If I have that free access to references, so does everyone else on these boards. From my own experience, it's easier and faster to look my questions up myself. In addition, I learn more from doing my own research. If I can't find it, I flag it and send it to QA. That's their job, not the job of those of us here. Word board answers aren't always accurate either. Finally, people are ungrateful if nobody answers their questions quickly enough. That's why I stopped going there. Grumpy little untrained newbies giving tongue lashings because we didn't do their work for them quickly enough. Half of them can't say thanks either. It's sink or swim out there. People have to figure out how to do for themselves.
Same could be said for people - do you let your kids play in traffic

Between cruise lines dumping, increased boat traffic dumping, and runoff from
the water supply --- that's my personal opinion on why there is such a growing red tide.
They try to say it's just an algae bloom, but the toxin that makes up what is known as red tide is actually lots and lots of different toxins generically called "red tide."
The "red tide" in Massachusets for example is not the "red tide" that affects the southern coastal states and shellfish.
We sit here and watch
cruise ships go by,
barge traffic,
luxury yachts,
many more people living on sail boats,
house boats (there is no more property to buy at a reasonable price so they are living on boats and probably dumping effluent in the water).
"Red tide" comes not only from marine water, it comes from resevoirs, your reclaimed water you spray your lawns with, you get it off the grass or bushes as you pass them, it is aerosolized as you water your lawn or go by an area where lawns are being watered. There is a plethora of ways we are getting "red tide"
But nobody talks about how we are getting it.
Look out there people, it is a toxic dump along the coast lines. I stand on the pier and see household trash floating by all day long. Plastic Wal-Mart bags and floating juice bottles, Frito Lay potato chip bags --- and you know some boater has thrown the trash overboard on the way to the dock.
We have people living on boats all over the place in the bayous. ICK. You know what's happening there.
The beautiful lawns 100 yards from where people are swimming and oh my gosh catching fish and getting mollusk clams and taking them home and eating them --- the chemicals in the run-off from manicured lawns and the animal excrement where hundreds of people walk their dogs is just right there! right there in the water those people are going to swim in, put their babies in, eat the shellfish out of. But nobody is warning them. TheY think it's OCEAN WATER AND IT'S SO HEALTHY. It is not healthy.
Yesterday as I was saying the red tide was so awful at the beach-----------An interesting observation:
NO BIRDS! There was not a sand piper, sea gull, or pelican in sight. NOT ONE.
Experience on top, current experience first. Education second. Leave out ALL fluff.
Recruiters don't need your life story. They need to know if you can do the job. If you want, put your current employer, then state "I have 20 years in the profession doing....." Keep it simple; keep it clean. If you want to go into more detail, do it during the interview. A HUGE red flag is to see that you've worked for 10 different companies, for months at a time. I know that someone who has worked for the same company for 2 years or more is going to have some degree of loyalty and will work through issues rather than cut and run.

ASR increase
I've been on ASR a year and have seen no increase. I practically have to type the entire report over and start from scratch. IN fact I think they take me longer since you really have to read them very closely because of the dumb words and grammar the computer puts in. I want everyone on ASR who got the "letter" to write back Ms. Barbato and give her your 2 cents on the matter. I'm not taking this lying down, have been kicked around enough by these jerks.

I work as an IC MT and I have to say I am getting pretty discouraged. I have not had an increase in my cpl in two years. I did ask recently for an increase but to no avail. The answer was simply "no, we can't give you an increase at this time." Wow - where do you go with that? I feel I work very hard and I am a good transcriptionist. I love my work but right now I'm down in the dumps about this line of work. Unfortunately, it is all I know. Just needed to vent a bit.

Don't take for granted that you have the opportunity. When my doctors don't dictate, there is nothing I can do... lets be serious.
I know this is a slow period so I will just wait it out, but don't assume that we are "lucky" to be able to increase our pay, some of you may be, but that is not always true for others.

Good morning, everyone. May I have a little advice on a rate increase I am thinking about, please? I have been transcribing for a clinic here in South Florida for 4 years. I started out at 0.06/line and have never raised my rate for this client. However, I would like to raise my line rate to 0.08. Is this unreasonable? I work from home and feel very isolated when it comes to knowing if I am way too low on my rate. Any advice you can give me would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Anyone want to know how MQ came up with the figures to say we have a PRODUCTION increase because of ASR? It will surprise you!
IC Rate Increase
I would say work with them a little. I would say try and increase to $2.50 per page in the hopes you get an increase of $2.00. I had a physician do this where I wanted $2.50 from $1.50 (6 years ago), and he offered me $2.00. I took it.
I am now, same physician, looking for a way to increase as I get paid per page $2.00 (typing from handwritten forms/not dictation), but I think he may go for it. I, however, am looking at whether I am making more with him per page as opposed to per line and with him it seems I do better per page. I also make deliveries. If I were you, I would not go 4 times a week if they are not willing to compensate you a little more for that time. Production is production, but the time spent making the deliveries needs to be worked in.
Is this a client that could possibly go digital? You may want to stroll that avenue. Just a thought. E-mail me if you'd like and have more questions. I am having the same dilemma. No one wants to go digital, but they are flexible with pick-up/delivery.
I read an article on www.mtworld.com about transcriptionists not making what they should because they do not want to "rock the boat", well my boat is sinking somewhat as everything has gone up but my income!!! HAHAHAHAHA
Rate increase...
I just this done several months ago and what I did was put a little "blurb" at the bottom on the current invoice that said "Effective xx/xx/xx line rate will be $x.xx", with the effective date starting the next month. I never heard anything back so have been billing at increased rate ever since. I did make it large enough (same font size as rest of invoice) and put a couple of ******next to it. When you get a bill from your water, electric, gas or whatever company, they don't even tell you,they just raise it, although sometimes the cable company will tell you in advance that rates have changed. Anyway, that's what I did, didn't feel I needed to justify it, especially if your rates have been the same for a long time, like mine!! Good luck.

Crank up the speed of the dictator as high as you can while still understanding it. Learn all the keyboard shortcuts and don't touch the mouse. If you hover your mouse over the buttons, you'll see the shortcut.
How to increase productivity
The more targeted your glossaries are, the faster you get to your words and phrases. Are you using doctor- or specialty-specific glossaries combined with your own base glossary?
Are you concentrating on phrases rather than on words? The big keystroke savings kick in when you concentrate on the phrases your doctors say all the time.

Where do you work where you can increase
I wanted to work all hours this week and make a good check for the holidays. I am actually getting half, because there is no work at any time of day. I am working 12-15 hours sitting and waiting for work. If you can share any where that has an abundance of work to get incentives it would be very appreciated. Glad you can make up for your loss, but I am sorry you are going through this.

My plan to increase my income
Real estate. I just took a new MT job during second shift hours. I'm going to real estate school (doesn't take long). My plan is to do the real estate thing during the day.
They even have a program that is certified (Georgia) that I can take online. I know it will take time to start getting listings and closings once I get my license, but at least it's a ray of hope.

Hi - Unfortunately, you will have to have some money in your savings to pay your bills until you become established. I went to real estate school with "the dream of more money", almost easy money. I didn't survive long enough to make any money. It is another one of those "lure you in with lies" profession. Sorry - but no better than MT

Unless you are making major bucks at being an MT, you would still be better served saving your money. Real estate is a difficult business to "break into" and there are many hidden costs. As another poster stated, "you are on call always" while working in real estate. Good luck to you though!
I have noticed an significant increase
in the cost of living. I do not know whether to attribute this to the cost of gas rising or Hurricane Katrina and the gulf ports out of commission but items on the shelf seem about 15% higher in general than just 1-2 years ago save for paper products.
I do not know how a family can do it and not go into severe debt and I really do believe that is how many are making it, using their charge cards to pay day to day expenses.
But that's CMT. Nobody has made mention of a pay increase for RMT. nm

Shortcuts to increase production
Can anyone tell me what types of shortcuts, software, etc. I can use to increase my production? I am looking for ways to cut time/increase production. I have some macros, but what else? Someone suggested I use the speech recognition software and I could repeat what was being dictated, as it may type faster? Has anyone tried this? I was thinking I would then have to spend my time cleaning up mistakes, but they said it was 99% accurate. Sounds strange, but maybe it would work. Any ideas would be appreciated!
