It's a scam, alright - you see similar posts asking
No, I do not feel that way, but I understand. A few years ago, I was feeling similar, but
when I look at what I make an hour ($30-40) who is going to pay me that without a Masters? I have it pretty darn good and will see it through until retirement - about 30 years from now (hopefully if I live that long) LOL.
You just need to find a good paying company or hospital and you will feel much better. The healthcare industry is here to stay, whether it be VR or offshoring. Most hospitals are bringing MT back in house. Not all hospitals agree with offshoring out of the country. There is a big world out there - go get em. Don't be discouraged.
I agree. Just thought someone might have been similar situation before. nm
:+
I understand your posts completely.....
You are coming across like you want me to be in complete agreement with you...well, I put in my facts based on my experience...so nuff said about it...I wish you well........take care and have a blessed week!!
Hmm. I thought Unicomp made keyboards similar to the IBM Model M
That was the old clackity clack buckling spring keyboard. You get a real IBM keyboard on ebay or clickykeyboards fairly cheap. The key markings are part of the key itself and never wear out. They are exceptionally NOISY though and you need a special USB converter to make it work with a USB connection. The Omni is a mechanical keyswitch which I think is even better than the buckling spring, just like the poster who posted about it. Those key markings never wear out either. Mechanical keyboards have a wonderful touch but they don't make very many any more. Too expensive to produce and instead we have the $10-20 dollar rubber dome "quiet" keyboards that feel like typing on a wet sponge. Some people though like that wet sponge feel but I think they are slower keyboards and harder to type on. Just a preference even though they are noiser. And for some it does not matter how spongy or squashy the keys are as long as the keyboard is quiet they are happy. Different strokes I guess.
I've had similar concerns
about blacklisting. After all, anybody can see how easy it would be to paint a dark picture of a company on this board so why wouldn't companies have a similar board somewhere to do the same with employees? I think the answer is because it would be considered blacklisting which would likely violate some employment laws and it would be too difficult to keep it a secret. But I could be wrong.
I've been going thru similar situation for the last
3 years. Don't be too sure that the person does NOT want to be found. Nobody is that stupid, especially after this amount of time. My person ended up being a criminal - in and out of jail, and still lives in my township. Her car is still registered at my address with motor vehicle - police come by regularly for one reason or another as her kids are criminals as well. I still get all her mail, all her bills - now obviously in collections, etc. I have been to the Postmaster, filed formal complaints with the state head post office - Newark, NJ in my case, and even gone to the police for their help. I DO NOT WANT this person's mail. Same as you - I get nowhere. I either throw it out or leave it in box with a note on it. I also have "accidentally" opened up some mail and called the collectors to tell them wrong address. It is NOT against the law as long as it is accidental - believe me, I've checked with the PO and a lawyer and police - as long as I give no details about her. Just that this address is not valid. It may seem silly to other's reading, but it is a very frustrating situation to live with. I feel your pain!
I've had similar experience
Yes, I think I do know what you mean. Especially since I am familiar with the account, I know what the format is and where the same ASR mistakes are made and go through and fix them while playing the audio. It's like I can read, listen, look ahead and fix all at the same time.
It is faster than typing in general; however, to keep my hourly rate up I really have to stay at it and get in the "zone," without getting up much. After a while I feel kind of stressed out. I think I have traded one kind of tired for another.
I've heard similar about other brands of

I've heard they are very similar (see inside)
I certainly don't think the difference is enough that your production would go down. If you had to switch to dial up, that would be different. I've never had cable, can't get it here, but I have no problems with DSL at all, and am thrilled to have it.
Never thought of it this way. I can understand this. (nm)

I've always liked Doug, my husband looks similar; I don't recall whom I saw/liked first though

Oh, sorry. I thought you were teasing. Read the posts
about MQ, which is what that particular company is referred to as here. What did you want to know about them?
Yes, I thought that was obvious. I totally understand that too. sm
Even though I'm listening to the reports and typing them out then doing my own proofing and editing someone is having to listen to them again and correct my errors. THAT person deserves and needs to be paid as well. Not to mention the company needs to make a little profit. So even if the company is being paid say, 12cpl, after paying me and my QA I'm sure it comes out fair.
I want to thank everyone here for their advice and opinions and helping me to sort this out in my own mind.
I think I am getting a fair wage.
I don't think so. I've seen just as many posts
on the seeker's board. I didn't notice any that had left either...the same ones that were posting before are still posting. As far as those 2 above, 1 is owned by someone who lives in India, but the MT company is run out of TX and employs US MTs. The other does have offices offshore but also in California, and again employs US MTs.
I've seen a lot of posts on AI, does anyone watch Nashville Star?
On Tuesday Nights, USA Network... Chris Young is so amazing!
Actually, I've seen Anon post negatively about other posts regarding SS.
yyy
Oh, I've been doing this many long years, so I understand what SM
you're saying. I've been dept. supervisor, QA, all of it -- all long enough to realize that I am not infallible, for sure.
What I will say is that spending two hours reading reports aloud is not going to help me in any way, shape, or form. If I thought for a moment that it would make my work better, I'd be willing to sacrifice the time and do it.
It's really sort of like a tic, what I do when I transcribe, and I can't help it. I have tried to let stuff sit there and have the spellcheck catch it, but it's like a reflex action. I've backspaced to it before I had time to think about it. I know that I'm not really using my resources very efficiently.
I think I said in my first post that I started on typewriters and went from there to a computer with just a keyboard and monitor, and the only editing tool available to me was the backspace key. Mercy, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. I transcribed that way until 1993 (? thereabouts), when I got my first spell check and word expander.
You've gotta understand that most newbies have
trouble getting a job with companies without felonies in their past. Hospitals are probably out, too. At the hospitals I worked at, they did extensive background checks on everybody, one even going so far as to fingerprint all new hires.
Newbies have an extremely hard time breaking into the field with national companies. I'm not sure if it's a national you tried or not, but just wanted to let you know you're in good company there.
Consider this: Though I'd not normally recommend a newbie seek out her own accounts, if all else fails, you can perhaps try to find a specialty clinic to transcribe for. Some smaller MTSOs might also be the way to go. Even if you have to check that you have had a felony, they may miss it. It's also unlikely they'll have the funds to do background checks on all of their potential employees.
That is THE most dangerous thing I think I've ever heard. You don't understand it?!
I've seen sooo many posts about this....Listen, the 5000 lines isn't a typo.
It's some type of project. If you search the board, you will see the posts and then maybe we won't have to keep top-posting it all over the place?
On the same theme, you've done so many ESLs that you can understand (& interpret for family or
friends) anyone on the news on TV or in a movie without having to look at the subtitles.
I've thought about it---
It's just that I know people in the Whitehall-Twin Bridges area-- they have all been keeping their eyes and ears open for me. Also, I love the mountains. Eastern MT is a lot more flat, hotter in summer and colder in winter. I did like Miles City when I was there for the Bucking Horse Sale a few years ago. We'll see---.
I've thought about it
After having the taxes done, I was so disappointed. I made really good money, but after the deductions and then figuring the hours I worked, it wasn't so great after all. I'm tired of working weekends and holidays. I'm tired of the nightmare I go through every time I take a day or two off to get caught up.
I would think the benefits alone would be worth returning inhouse ... if you get them. Sick Leave. Vacation Leave. Retirement. Insurance. No more self-employment tax.
And no matter how hard I emphasize that I am not to be disturbed when working in my home office, there is always the interruption for "just five seconds." I'm tired of the lack of respect for my career and my working hours.
I say, "GO FOR IT." Good luck!
i've thought
-- if i didn't have to work at home -- that it would be "gravy" to do the dictating for a physician -- at least we'd know how to pronounce things correctly and what things are important to the MT on the other end. Don't know how lucrative it would be tho...
yes, I've thought of that ....
but it is a union position and their hands are tied, as per HR. My boss would give me more $$ if she could. Our sister hospital is NOT in the union and that MT makes $4 an HOUR more than me! Aagghh!!
Well, as for me, I've always thought sm
intense heed is very important, don't you?
LOL. Wow, you've thought about that one a lot, haven't you?
It's good to have a plan, I agree. I'd like to set up an SEP retirement account for myself because I know social security won't be there for me.
No, I'm just really tired of job hunting. My perfect job would be parttime with regular steady hours. I don't care if I'm SE or IC. It's not about only wanting to work when I want to. I know that the company needs coverage. However, I'd like to be able to take a day off when I'm sick instead of being told, "No, we need this work done. Nobody can do it except for you." I could even make up my hours, but IC seems to mean you're not allowed to get sick or anything. It just seems like you sell your soul to the devil just for the "luxury" of working at home. I'm so extremely tired from everyone demanding from me all the time. I pitch in all the time when they're out of TAT or someone else is absent, but I'm not allowed to have needs of my own. The more you give of yourself, the more everyone wants. I feel as if there's nothing left inside of me.
I've thought about it, but am usually too burned out ..(s/m)
.. at the end of the day to want to do more transcribing. But that may be a good way to get my feet wet... maybe filling in as a part time IC for someone who is on sick leave or vacation, so it would only be temporary.
Thanks for your thoughts!
I've always thought the difficult dictators should be
weighted at the very least to compensate the MT at a higher rate for their effort. I think the cherrypickers, if they are not going to be stopped, should at least get lower pay for their reports.
Of course, if you paid 2 cents more for Dr. ESL's work then you'd have to set a limit to how many blanks could be accepted period or the cherrypickers would do them and leave nothing BUT blanks to get the money.
It would have been better for them to have never tried the "send back to pool" block than to let the complainers overrule and win. Sad.
Do you have a bachelor's degree? I've thought about
but the lack of a bachelor's degree is really the main weeding-out tool/stumbling block for me, darn it. I didn't realize it was such a major requirement for this type of job too ... as far as http://www.fdch.com goes, anyway. I thought maybe not having experience in court reporting/CAT machine transcription would be the breaker, actually.
Interesting, but.... (sigh)
I've always thought that podiatrists are trying to trump themselves up into something
s
Great idea...I've often thought of doing some...
thing similar. After all, AAMT was started by individuals with an idea. Unfortunately the original, most likely that *good* idea has been long lost.
So, form a new organization. Set up testing. Issue a credential. Actually represent the American MT. What a concept.
I've thought about sitting in the camper or locking myself in the bedroom before,
but those wouldn't work either. I've been trying to take a nap all weekend due to lack of sleep and a nasty cold, but every five minutes, someone's pounding on the locked bedroom door and whining for Mooooommm!!!! Cripes, sometimes I can't even use the bathroom or take a shower without five or six interruptions. As much as I love them, my entire family has been driving me apestuff this past week. My office is currently in the living room with the phone, TV, video game system, stereo, front door, and most of the household foot traffic running through. That's going to change soon when we turn the old dining room into a private office with soundproof walls and a locking door.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I've seen quite a few names, first and last, of people
mgmt on this board in the past, in similar situations, which is why I felt I could post this question. I certainly don't think I was not being tactful to the people I asked about, as I complimented them and enjoyed working with them. I wouldn't mind my name being on this board if someone said something nice about me.
I've thought of doing it too! Anyone remember the ROS School of Transcription? The lady that SM
started that school was an MT working out of her home. She ran the school out of her home too! It was a distance learning program. She contracted with CMT Transcirption Service to let her students type some of their accounts. CMT in turn employed a mentor who would basically train the students, check their work, and give them feedback. Once they graduated the program, CMT usually hired most of them if they had enough work.
I know because I used to be an IC for CMT as a Mentor/Editor. Pretty good job at the time except once everyone got trained, there was very little left for me to edit. That's when I started thinking "hey, maybe I should start my own school!"
Now with ROS defunct, I was thinking about again. There really is a need for a good school created by MTs and run by MTs where the sudents are mentored by real MTs. But that's just me, I'm always full of big ideas, but can never really figure out how to make it happen, ya know?
I kind of thought this fit with all the posts about low work, no work.
MTs complaining they are not finding jobs, or if they are the pay is extremely low. Seems to be a lot of posting mostly about no work...
I was kind of curious where all the work has been going, much more so than the usual slow times...
Just do a search and read the posts. There are plenty of posts about OSI on this board. nm.
nm.
I use EXText with my current job and I've used at a couple of other jobs I've had. I've ne
used DocQscribe, but I have used Meditech, Cerner, Vianeta, the Precyse platform (I can't remember the name), Dolbey, and Lanier platform I think was called Cequence (?).
Out of all the different platforms I have typed on, I have liked EXText the best. In my opinion, it's very user friendly, easy to learn, and I really like ESP which is the built in abbreviation expander. Plus it is very easy to create your own normals which I love. My fingers literally never leave the keyboard because there are macro keys for everything. You can use your mouse if you prefer or learn the function macros. I love it. I think I'm more productive on EXText than with any other platform.
I've thought about coding. My DH does medical coding and I think with an MT's medical termino
background and anatomy and physiology knowledge, a transition into coding wouldn't be hard at all. From what I can tell by looking through my husband's books, an MT would have to learn insurance regulations and legalities. We've basically got all the medical background down or we should be if we're worth our salt as an MT.
I even contacted AHIMA and found that the qualifications for taking the CCS or CCP coding exams are completion of the a coding program, RHIT program, or RHIA or related work experience. Transcription is part of HIM, albeit the red-headed stepchild of the HIM department, but a part nonetheless and so satisfies the qualification of having work experience.
The test is tough though. My husband didn't pass it his first time out and I think I read something like only 20% or so pass it the first time. So it would probably be best to take some sort of formal coding class, in my opinion.
Um have you read any of your posts and the other posts? I think everyone DOES believe me..you
LOL I did something similar.
I used a desktop timeclock and stopped it every time I got interrupted or distracted. I'm very productive when I get up first thing in the morning and type before everyone else gets up. I've also learned to shut the computer down completely when I'm done working for the day and go do something else entirely. Unfortunately, I've been sitting here waiting for work for three days now.
Does anyone know of something similar
I cannot get my foot pedal to work with this program.
I think the 2 are actually very similar -sm-
...at least that is what I've heard. I, too, use WP. It looks like most nationals and online companies use Word. My current supervisor mentioned to me recently that the two platforms were very much alike - maybe try setting the tabs to specific points just like we do now in WP and see if that works? At least until someone who does work with Word posts... lol
Wish I could be more help.
Another one similar
Used to work at a hospital where you had to manually input the patient's names. The doctor said the name, it was extremely foreign and sounded like it had about 20 syllables and then without missing a beat he said "and it's spelled just like it sounds." I groaned out loud and then the doc said laughed and said "oh, just kidding you know!" and he then spelled it very clearly. It made me feel like this doctor actually realized there was a human on the other end of the line.....better than the doctor at the same hospital that used to dictate while shaving his beard with an electric razor!! Using the urinal while dictating or flushing is my other favorite.
Yes, it is similar sm
IT has your ST converted expansions on the left (if you set it that way) and what would be the list you see at the bottom of your ST in Word on the right. Unlike ST, the line does not travel, however.
If you have both programs and want to learn more about IT, feel free to contact me. I have about enough mastery to help convert an ST glossary to IT and I have set my IT about as close to ST as I can. I have not had the time to completely figure out the "singles" glossary needed to run concurrently so I can use single letter shortcuts, but I have been told how to do this.
If you are an ST user no other program will ever be quite as fast for you, but IT is the closest I have found. I am not that much slower and I have been playing with IT for a whole week...
I would tell you not to worry too much about converting over truly. I am adding lots more expansions that are similar to the singles and/or the just start typing see it in the line and use it stuff. I use 2 x 3, 3 x 2, 2 x 2 and 1 + 1 + 1 codes with extra tags for s, ing, ed, ly ending etc. The good news is that with 26 letters in the alphabet and an astronomical number of possible combinations, I don't think it likely I will run out of possibilities. Also, ST limits the length of your expansions, IT does not. Given that you can add full strings of text, full sentences, etc. the speed has the potential to come up dramatically. I would not use IT to make and use normals, I prefer to create Word or WordPerfect documents, I know you could use it for this purpose too.
As I have said, it is really all about the glossary. However, I'd prefer the way ST operates.
Oh so similar! sm
Different kind of work but the similarities are striking. When I did speak up, I was basically told I should think about taking a hike. In my case, something wonderful has come along that is taking me in a different direction. I will continue to do this work either full or part time in addition to that but with an employer that I know and trust.
I don't know the answer except find a good, fair boss/company or pray for something to come into your life to change things up. It is very sad for the good ones of us. I guess you could job hop and be the newbie all the time and get the good work. Just kidding (sort of).
I just went through something similar- sm
the lady doing an old account of mine just disappeared one day, so I got to clean up the mess she left, just finished it up last night finally, had about 200 minute to wade through on top of my usual work. I compared voice files to the work she had turned in to figure out what dates she had done what work. They should have provided you with her last couple of weeks of work so you could have avoided the duplication. Hard to say what to do, I would not be happy about eating it but it is probably the thing to do, but make it clear to them that if they give you any more work in the future that ends up being duplicates that you will have to charge them. If they want to avoid that they should provide her previous month's work to you so you can check it to make sure there are no duplicates.
I have done something similar
I had read that when trying to concentrate on a task/project, that you can get more done with 90 minutes of undisturbed effort and a short break.
It always takes me a good 15 minutes to get into my zone where I am at my fastest. If I keep interrupting myself then I never get there and the line count suffers.
To the posters who can't do the 410 (neither can I!), still over time the rate will get faster and faster.
Thanks for posting this simple but effective idea to edge up our $-per-hour just a little bit. It all helps!
Saw something similar last week (sm)
but it was a dog in one of those umbrella strollers. Seemed quite content actually. I gathered from the graying muzzle that walking probably would have worn her out before they got around the corner.
I am in a similar situation.
I, along with several other employees, have filed a claim in magistrate court. The company, which was a corporation, has now closed its offices, and are denying that they owe us our last paycheck. We are going to court to fight it, but I am not sure what we will be able to do. The labor board told us that since it was a corporation, and since it is now closed, that they cannot help us.
