Wireless aircard for laptop - sm
Anyone ever use a wireless aircard for their laptop while transcribing away from home? I am in the process of acquiring a laptop and checking into this form of obtaining Internet access for use this summer. I'm totally confused after speaking to the wireless aircard company. Apparently it is a monthly fee, but not for "per minute" use. I was told that the fee would cover "5 GB or 5 KB" not sure what she said - apparently equivalent to downloading 3 movies or 1,000 songs. Does anyone have experience with this and would you tell me if this is feasible for using to work away from home? It would not be everyday, the occasional long weekend, and while I know it depends on how much work I do, what I would like to know is this amount sufficient for my needs? Any help, comments, advice, etc. would be greatly appreciated. (I will also be getting wireless hooked up at home too, but not sure if this works away from home...need words of wisdom on this also). So, anyone out there willing to enlighten me? TIA
They do have wireless with laptop through cell phones now
I have it but it is slow too. Probably as slow as satellite. It is supposed to be DSL speed, but I dont think it is. I have never had DSL to know for sure. It is faster than dial up but it is slower than cable. I am able to work, but you can forget about fast downloads. Small jobs are fine. The only thing that takes so long is the actual sending/receiving dictation.

Laptop w/ Cingular wireless connection
Hi,
I just bought my first laptop since we are getting ready to move across the USA. I researched into using a PC card that connects to cingular wireless (Or verizon) so that I can connect to internet, E-mail, etc. Kind of like a cell phone.
I was wondering if anyone has used this and how well it works in real life?
Thanks for your time.

Wireless router setup/laptop
You don't say what kind of router your have but your wireless router DOES NOT need to be connected by ethernet cable to your computer--you only need to connect by cable when you initially install the router software. Next, if your router has WEP or WAP security enabled, your laptop wireless will not be able to just connect automatically. Copy your router settings from your main computer (the one you installed the router software to) onto a USB flash drive if you have one and load those settings on your laptop.
The easiest way to set up your network if you have Windows XP is to go to control panel, then go to the Wireless Network Setup Wizard. It will prompt your on how to set up a secure wireless network if your router has it and how to add other computers to your wireless network. It is very easy if you have a USB flash drive--otherwise you'll have to manually add in the settings. Good luck!!
I have all kids' computers and laptop on wireless router.
My work computer is directly wired into the router and is kept out of the wireless network for security reasons. Make sure if you do install a wireless network that you make it secure!
A laptop, wireless router or a card from say Sprint, good battery
you could work anywhere. Being wireless has great benefits, say if you are in the hospital, dying, why you could make a few bucks to pay for the funeral.
I work on Escription platform and the adapter didnt work for me. I tried it on my laptop though
and the foot pedal would just not play correctly with the adapter. I think others have tried it and done it but it just didnt work for me.
Does anyone work on wireless?
Is this a good option?? I am not able to get cable, DSL, and satellite is too slow. Is wireless a good option for transcription when there don't seem to be any jobs for dial-up anymore? Thanks.
I just work with ShortHand minimized. Smarttype doesn't work the same way? nm

WiFlyer - Wireless dial up - does it work?
I found something called WiFlyer for "wireless dialup". I think you plug it into your phone jack and then a little antennae to your notebook and you can move around the house freelying without a phone cord. I wonder if it makes dial up any faster? Has anyone used this? What did you think?
Thanks
I work on a Dell XPS and am completely wireless except for headphones...
Wireless keyboard and mouse; wireless pedal in the form of a Playstation wireless controller, although I am sure that only works with Express Scribe. You can buy wireless headphones, but I have not invested in them as of yet. Being wireless, I have found it very comfortable to work in my recliner chair. I can even put my feet up while using the joystick on the Playstation controler to play the sound. My ergo keyboard fits in my lap, which some may find a litte weird, but I am total comfortable without any aches, pains, numbness, fatigue. Mouse goes on the arm of the chair (works only with opitcal mouse, no wheel). Works for me. Good luck!!!!
I work from a laptop on DQS
We travel back and forth between our main home and a cabin. It works fine. I got all kinds of help from another poster on this board before I bought and then did a lot of research on the internet. DQS loads just dandy. Just make sure you get a fairly powerful processor and plenty of memory and storage. Also you'll need several kinds of ports to accommodate an external keyboard, foot pedal and mouse. Mine came with all these. It's an HP with an AMD-64 processor. Very very happy with it!
i have a laptop so i can still work on
battery back up, but i still unplug everything and wait it out. it's not worth the risk because it only takes once and you lose everything. i'm in the midwest with tornados going through right now....i couldn't live without my laptop and battery back up!
Anyone work on laptop?
Wondering if any MT's work on laptop versus desktop computer?
Does anyone use a laptop for work?
Do you like it? My PC is about to take a dump and Im gonna have to find something else to take its place. My friend has a laptop I can borrow. Everything new has Vista and work has advised us not to upgrade to Vista at present.
About laptop for MT work..sm
i just got a very nice, widescreen laptop for work. I have medical issues and could not withstand working at my desk any longer. People are telling me that it won't last for MT work becuase the keyboard is not durable enough. Well, i still use my ergo keyboard hooked up and i only use the laptop keyboard for work when I am completing my work for about 2 to 3 hours at night. My question is, has any of you ever had a laptop keyboard go bad with MT work?
I hope not, took me years to even afford this one. :)
About laptop for MT work
I have been using laptops (first one was a notebook) for about 10 years. The one I have now is over 4 years old and doing fine. I too, use an external keyboard. I wouldn't have anything else.
Using Laptop for Work
Yes, the keypad in the laptop is not designed for typing work and it is VERY costly if need to be changed. So, you can hook up an USB keyboard and optical mouse with your laptop's USB port.
You CAN work in bed on a laptop
Okay, so maybe I'm the last laptop MT out there who just discovered this but I've figured out how to work from bed on days when I'm struggling physically (I have RA). I have propped my foot pedal on a pillow under my elbow/forearm, and gently lean on it while I type. MUCH better! Just wanted to pass that wisdom on in case there was anyone else out there that could be helped by this.
Anone MTers use wireless connection for MT work such as Alltel sm
Does it work well - all in can get in my area is dial-up at 26.4 SLOW!
No - no laptop - no computers and no work
I'm just going to leave - and try to relax and work this out. I have no support at home with this, so I am sure it will be at least a day before anyone at home will realize that I am not there. Probably when someone needs me to do something - it will be hey - where's mom - I thought she was just going to the store. My husband has been in the garage today with his brother and another guy since about 9:00 a.m. - and it is hot here. Thanks for everyone's support. The rest of my immediate family is dead or I am sure that they would help me with this. That is why I have to go somewhere on my own, since I don't have any family to help me.
I work outside with my laptop with no problems.
I also have a Sprint USB wireless card and can work anywhere I get a signal, which for me is basically everywhere I travel. I purchased a 9-cell battery and get approximately 6 hours of work time. I use Express Scribe for work and I just use the hotkeys and I don't need to use a footpedal. All my resources are electronic and are downloaded onto my laptop.
While I still prefer to work at a desk as I am more productive when working at my desk, it is nice to have the option to work outside when the weather is nice or if my kids want to go outside to play.
How many of you use a Laptop solely for work? nm
xx
Wild guess-borrow a wireless?? Go to an open wirless and work from the car if you have to?
Where there's a will there's a way - keep asking and keep talking, someone will help you. Ask the company you work for to help you out here, perhaps they have a plan for you if they value your association.
Anybody here work only on a laptop and not use desktop computer at all?
Does it drive you crazy with the small keyboard and small screen? Maybe it's something you get used to and compensate for when working. I'm considering getting a laptop just for work to keep things separate but looking for pros and cons of this. I figured somebody on the board has some advice on this.
I am a bit computer dumb, but what would I need with a laptop to work while at the hospital with my

Laptop/notebook recommendations for transcription work?
I am going to get a laptop/notebook in about a month and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for one that seems to work well with transcription. I need to know specifics like hard drive, RAM, memory, model number, etc. Thanks in advance
Thanks! It sounds like an air card can also work between desktop and laptop
Thanks so much for all this info...It sounds like you can get air cards that plug into USB ports that you can interchange between your desktop computer and your laptop for on-the-go or if there were a power outage. Am pretty low tech but seriously considering this. A lot would depend on the dependability of the signal from my home. If it were steady, I would consider cutting (ha ha) the cable internet which is 48$ plus taxes and just have the broadband (60$ ?) which I could use with my desktop computer or take with me using a laptop and also could use with a laptop in case of power outage. hmmmmmm
Last year we went to Disney and I work on a laptop so I brought it and didn't
take any time off so I could work. After much probing, calling, and trying to set up my internet (I made sure the hotel had wireless or I wouldn't book it), I finally got on line, but it was the night before we had to leave anyway.
I absolutely love my Dell laptop because of the flexibility and I can work on the dining table, office, kids room, etc. I can't imagine ever going back to a desktop PC.
But, you never know when you travel if 100% you will be able to get online.
Does anyone use laptop & cell phone/Internet Card for work?
I am not real computer literate but am wondering if I couldn't get unlimited Internet with a cell phone plan and use that for my on-line job/Internet connection exclusively. I have found plans for around $70/month.
If so, I was thinking too I could possibly give up my land line phone, Callwave, my dial-up ISP (as that is all we have available where live) and actually save a little money by doing so. I don't make/receive a lot of land line calls and I have a TracFone cell phone that I don't use much now. I get excellent reception with that where I live. We have a huge tower within walking distance of where I live but we live out in the "sticks". :D I know my connection would be dependent on the reception where I live and the cell phone service I would use. I am not sure which one truly has the best coverage and/or who may be using the tower by our home but TracFone apparently does. :)
TIA.
That's strange I bought the adapter but couldnt get it to work right. Maybe cuz it was a laptop..
I'll have to try it again. I just could not get it to work right. I would get sound but then it would freeze up.
So you can work completely remote on a laptop and access your home PC with this program
please e-mail me with more info if you can. thx
That doesn't work either around here....sm
A few years ago I was working the 2nd shift and put huge signs up asking people to not ring the doorbell because I was working and I had given my neighbor the candy that was to be given away on my behalf... neighbor even told the brats when he gave it to them that it was from my house as most people get to his door before mine and they still ignored the information they had been given.
If we didn't have 400 kids come through I wouldn't mind - but there are apartment complexes abutting our subdivision and the people from the apartments dump their kids by the car loads onto our subdivision to get the candy. Our neighborhood association wishes it could block off the street for this 1 night a year to keep these goobers out! I don't mind giving candy to the kids that I know but not to the rest of the world.
Yes, we see, as you go doesn't work very well, does it??? LOL!

No, doesn't work. Thanks, anyway. nm

Okay, you work doesn't need QA because YOU are the QA...
and I should come down off my high horse?
You have waaaaaay more education, so you automatically assumed that you could be an MT without any kind of MT training? See, that's the problem, your attitude. "Anybody can be an MT -- medical terminology, ha! I've got a degree in tiddlywinks, surely I can do medical transcription."
Oh and your doctor never complains because he wouldn't know a misspelling or a grammatical error if it bit him in the... Most doctors are far too busy to bother with such nonsense. That's why they hire us because they hope we know what we are doing.
Oh and FYI, I do own my own business. I am a QA consultant. I offer my services to MTSOs for a fee. I randomly QA their MTs and find those things the QA staff is missing because they are too busy filling in the million and a half unneccessary blanks left in reports by careless MTs. I also keep one full-time, employee status job for the benefits and the steady pay-check.
doesn't work... sm
I posted below; read that for more info.
Even with the best dictator and the newest version of Dragon (which I use), while it CAN be done logistically, VR is not to the point where it understands naturally spoken English, even with the most clear speech. A person has to dictate in a very artificial manner. If the dictator knew in advance to dictate that way, maybe. But not very likely.
I have to speak in a very distinct manner when redictating my work.
doesn't work for me
if I type 3yo, it shows just that...it won't expand out to -year-old. And when I type 3 yo it leaves the space between the 3 and -.
doesn't let you work
My husband used to be like that until he was diagnosed 10 years ago with bipolar disorder. He is also on disability and he knows that I really have to work, since I pay most of the bills. He makes me breakfast and my 25 year old daughter who is still home shares with him the dinner meals. So I just make sandwiches for lunch and that's it. My daughter goes grocery shopping on Saturday or Sunday afternoon, as she works.
We have a great life NOW.
I wish you the best.
I work for 2, one knows, the other doesn't sm
One is an employee situation and I am not bound by contract not to work anywhere else, but I simply don't talk about it. My lead MT knows I work for someone else, but by the number of lines and time I put in, it would be hard to tell sometimes.
The PT job knows well about the other job and sometimes they forget I work a split and I have to go back, but usually this is not a problem.
There is a company who refused to hire me about 9 months ago because of who my FT is. I would have been considered to be "working for the competition" like this is a problem, as I keep my mouth SHUT and I don't talk about accounts from one company with the other company. I have some ethics and I took this personally. Give me some credit for some discretion and for some integrity!!
doesn't work for me
I have tried to save it just in Word when I am out of the platform and it doesn't work when I reopen Word in or out of the platform. I sent a message to my employer but haven't heard anything back yet.
6 WEEKS...IT DOESN'T WORK...... sm
the "reason" it doesn't work is because it's been sitting in the box for 6 weeks. LOL ! If I ever put my cookies down long enough to open it, I'll let you know.
This doesn't necessarily work for others, but ...
when I feel upset, overwhelmed, or down about my situation, I try to think of how worse others may have it. For instance, maybe your husband is facing 6 weeks of recovery from surgery... but somewhere out there somebody's husband has been delivered a grim prognosis and would give anything for a 6 week "recovery."
You say you're an orphan... But looking on the positive side you do have a husband and children (however trying they may be at times), and someday they will have spouses and children and your family will be ever larger. That's a good thing.
Again, not to diminish your problems in any way, just trying to share how I sometimes help myself through tough times, by reminding myself that things can actually be much much worse.
doesn't work, hopefully he will learn....nm

...a new one if it doesn't work, but many times it does. nm

Mine doesn't work either
Mine does the same thing. I think if you don't work on site, and just dial in, it won't keep track. That's what the Lanier guy told me when he came to set me up, but when I worked in the hospital, it did keep track.
been there done that ...doesn't work...only causes more chaos...sm
but thanks for the advice. It's crossed my mind a million times...
Two wrongs just don't make a right...ever... To me...the only one being childish is the greedy cherrypicker...not the mature person trying to find a peaceful solution.
But that's JMO...thank you though...
Thanks, doesn't sound like something I want to work on. nm

*67 doesn't work on 800 numbers
Corporate numbers, 800 numbers, and government numbers often use a different form of caller ID. It's called a WATS line, and it records the originating phone number of EVERY call, not just the un-hidden ones.
Do this instead, if you decide to report something anonymously:
Go to a Dollar General, Family Dollar, whatever, and buy a Tracfone for $10. Activate it online from a public WiFi spot such as Panera's (NOT from your home desktop computer).
Use the Tracfone to call the 800 number. Throw away or give away the Tracfone after that - don't use it for anything else. Remove the battery immediately after the call. Place the call from a location as far away from your physical location of residence as possible.
Why doesn't she take the PC into the pool , that might also work...nm
