I used to buy my software directly on the internet, but found that AVG is free, was highly recommended by many tech guys, and I have it running on two computers in the house. Catches all of the new viruses, so I don't have to worry about spending all that money on antivirus software. Try it. Goggle it to find the free software, as it updates on a daily basis and it scans your computer any time you want it to.

I have always purchased my antivirus software online and downloaded it onto my computer. If I buy the software, say at Sam's Club or anywhere, can it be loaded onto numerous computers? I have 4 networked in my home and all are going to be running out of protection soon. In other words if I only have to buy it once that would be great. TIA
I would not bet on free antivirus programs,
that's how one usually gets some viruses in.

You can also try to find foot pedals on ebay, there they are much cheaper, I know, everybody knows this.
I think every antivirus software 'works' with any platform.
Why should it make a difference?
I do not think that the companies mean that some antivirus softwares DO NOT WORK with their platforms, they just ask for the safest and believe tht these 2, Norton and McAfee are the safest.
I work with Escription/Editscript and it is strongly recommended by my employer that either Noton or McAfee is downloaded and paid for.
I have McAfee, because, be;ieve it or not, MTSOs see these 2 as sefest.
Now I am expecting to be bashed by certain MTs for my 'rude' comment.
Never mind.

Whoa - I mistakenly downloaded a free antivirus
and nearly ruined my PC because it downloaded threatening messages constantly, constantly pestering me to download the 2009 version for a fee. I did not have a virus, it was just a fake.
It took me months to get rid of the program and had to keep researching to find out how to get the files out completely.
Just a heads up - make sure you read it before downloading.

Free AV software
The free version of AVG is the only one that I'd recommend among the freebies. My preference would be either the "total" AVG product (not free) or Norton.
Unfortunately, no single AV software is able to catch every single virus. You have to consider that by some estimates there are a thousand or more viruses being released every day, which means that no virus software can hope to be 100% up to date.

Best free encryption software? sm
I'm going out of town tomorrow, kind of a mini family emergency, and for the first time will have to drag my laptop along to work. The encryption software on my main computer cannot be transferred to the laptop. Anyone have opinions on free encryption software that is fast to install, good quality, and easy to use. I don't have enough time to learn new software or putz with it. Thanks.

Just bought a new computer and need to load a linecounting software program. Used to have MTCount which was free but now it has changed to MTTools and is no longer that way. Any suggestions?

I need a software program similar to GearPlayer, free or cheap. Is there one that anyone can recommend? I want one that would work with the GearPlayer footpedal I have or with easy keyboard commands to start, stop, rewind, etc.
I ran across a site months ago that had older versions of Stedman's spellchecker for $30 or so. If anyone knows that site, or one similar, please share that info, as well.
I also need WordPerfect, as new a version as I can get, but as inexpensive as I can get, also.

anyones opinion on best free digital software please
Hi. I am a newbie here. I did a search in the forums but did not really find anything. I am going to be doing some work, for the first time in a long time, on digital voice files. I have an "Infinity" foot pedal and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good, free software that will allow me to listen to the wav files and use my foot pedal. I would prefer one that would let me speed up and slow down......any suggestions? I appreciate any help. Thanks

Download FTP SERVER software (it can be found free). Then have the docs
upload their files to YOUR server. There is no cost to you or the doc to do this. Someone does have to pay for the recorder, which I have chosen to do for 2 docs. The other one purchases his own when needed (twice in 7 years). One picks up files on FTP server. The other 2 still want theirs printed. Since they are not in same city, I mail them via snail mail and they are happy with that. I also do fax any stat reports to them at no charge simply because I have unlimited long distance.
Any suggestions where I can obtain free invoicing software, or reasonably priced. nm

You are only as good as the software
I worked VR with MQ since its inception. Some accounts I did great, making about triple my straight transcription line count. Other accounts were not so great; I actually lost money. It all depends on how good the VR software is. You shouldn't have that many edits on it. It also depends on how clean the dictator is. MQ started screwing with ours not too long ago (just before I quit) and we ended up editing punctuating and formatting that we never had to edit before.
As for giving the body break, though, I don't think so. I found my pinkies hurt from constantly using the ctrl keys for the shortcuts.
To the posters below who claim we are liars: You don't know everything about every VR software. Please don't put others down for being able to produce. As for my transcription abilities, they were called "cream of the crop" by my employer. After leaving MQ, I was immediately hired by another MTSO that does only straight transcription and my line count and more importantly quality are still great.
VR is only as good as the speaker and software.
And how often is that really? If you happen to luck out and get a clear and good speaker, he or she will be yawning, chewing gum or food, speaking in a noisey environment, etc., etc., etc. Or the system will be throwing words in that were never spoken, leaving out many words that were spoken and changing correct words into really dumb stuff. VR is for the MTSO. They are the ones who really make the money on it.
can you suggest a good software program
to compare with the line counts being given by the hospital? I am also in the same boat, but I can access my line count. I would like an independent way of counting my lines, because you never know, right? What a world.
AVG and their free download is as good as anything else out there.

Any good/bad news about free firewall
I needing to find a firewall and thought I'd ask you all for opinions - Any good ones? Any to stay away from?
When I am on my computer, I keep hearing clicking sounds as you hear when you click on something within a website. Am I being paranoid? I have heard stories where people's computers have been "overtaken". My Norton Security expired this month and just a couple of weeks ago I downloaded a free antivirus program that was recommended by my home office. Now I'm without a firewall and I think I made a mistake in doing that.
Line counting software - Need a good program. Have used MPCount in the past, but now
cannot download the old one, as it has been replaced by some new version, which I don't like. Can anyone recommende a good line counting program. Thanks.

Use your mouse and keep going back as another poster said. It is time consuming, but you'll be surprised at finding that something you thought you didn't understand will become crystal clear after listening to it over and over. :)
When I tested, I kept having to going back and back and then I suddenly realized that the word I could not figure out, "Whameetig" was the word "vomiting."

many companies I want.
If I made $50K a month from 5 companies and you only make but $500 from 1 company -- that's my reward for being resourceful, for working hard, for doing the work that is offered when it is offered.
Nice thing about this country is you are free -- free to be as rich as you want to be or as poor as you want to be!! I love it!!
A way to get work done for free
I actually had 1 company ask me what my specialties were and then send me a file dictated the same day in one of my specialties with a note telling me to transcribe it as quickly as possible. That one really made me think she just wanted work done for free.

out of you. Some companies do that, especially unreputable ones. Good for you.
I recently applied for a job and they hired me after reviewing my resume and a short telephone interview. No tests. I was QA for about a week and a half, which I guess is their testing period, but I got paid for it. Can't beat that.
Work for Free
I'm telling you, DON'T WORK FOR TOTH. They will s c a m you out of $130 or more before you even start to work, as they charge you this ridiculous fee just to set up your computer. Believe me, there aren't too many companies out there, at least in the 11 years that I have been doing this, that charge you to set up your computer, and if they do, it's usually only $30 to $50.
Don't stoop to their level. They have no regard for their MTs, and they live beyond their means in a big house, with a mortgage that is about 5 times the average mortgage, and their car payments are about 3 times the average car payment. I know them personally, and they're not good people.
Wait until after the holidays. This time of year it slows down, as doctors take vacation, etc. It is usually slow this time of year. Things break usually in February.
