Serving Over 20,000 US Medical Transcriptionists

Do you expect businesses to cease operating because the U.S. work force refuses to provide services?

Posted By: I think not on 2005-08-24
In Reply to: you have no idea what you're talking about - so hush

What will be wanted is that the immigrants pay taxes and that there are no outlaws coming and going. This is all about taxes.

And yet the services expect us to be "professional" and "honest" with them. Yeah right!

Oh, and there will be other MTs who post to you and say not all services are like that.  Well, the majority are and I say do what you have to do to make money.  That's what the services are doing - anything they can to pad their pockets while keeping under their thumb.

I'm currently studying to take the CCS (certified coding specialist) exam and starting in January I'm going back to school to get my associates degree in Health Information Management and test for my RHIT credentials.  I getting out because medical transcription has gone steadily downhill since I first became an MT 20 years ago.  Everyone thought the internet would just improve the industry, make it easier for us to work home, yada, yada.  And at first it was great.  But now there's a steady stream of transcription going overseas because the internet makes it easy and the independent contractor can't earn a decent living anymore.  We aren't viewed as highly educated and skilled medical professionals anymore; we are viewed as nothing more than secretaries or typists - a job that someone who barely speaks English can do for a fraction of what an MT should make.  It's just sad.

I've become so burned out and disillusioned with my profession, it's hard for me to even concentrate on my work every day.  I hate what medical transcription has become.  I hate that I studied so hard years ago and worked so hard all those years leading up to today only to be paid pennies per line for my expertise.

I discourage anyone thinking about getting into medical transcription and encourage anyone with the wherewithal and financial means, to find another profession.

I had to force myself to work with it, but I'm glad that I did.
It took about two weeks until I could get used to the idea of typing words differently. It has really helped with the fatigue in my arms, shoulders, wrists, etc.
I'd force her hand while you line up other work.
I would continue doing the work and returning it as soon as it's done. Once you've transribed/printed it's their responsbility from there. I've seen so many docs think they can't afford to pay a measley paycheck but can well afford big houses, cars, vacations. Let's face it, they really don't know what 'tight' is. She seems fishy, very odd. What doc wants you to postpone getting work done? That's just plain bad business. I'm very sorry for you. I think you should keep doing the work, line up something else, and let her squirm and have to face you. If she phases you out by trying to avoid you, nicely get in her face, and make her be accountable for how she's treating you. I'm also very sorry about your husband. You'll be in my prayers.
Get out the timer. You'll have to force yourself to work uninterrupted for periods of time.
Just keep in mind that you WANT the money. Best of luck!
If I work for a co. that mainly has VA hospitals, can you tell me what kind of work to expect. sm
Has been a long time since I have been an IC,so I forget what to expect from VA accounts. Will you enlighten me?
Guess what? If companies fired the shoddy MTs, they'd lose more than half their work force in eve
company! Pretty sad state of things, but that's the quality out there right now, and AMERICAN MTs.
ICs can work for services, as well. nm

I provide the template, I don't provide the headings though.
but I do pay them for everything that they transcribe. So, the MT has the initial template, they fill in the demographic fields, the body of text, cc information, etc. and that's what they are paid for. The body of text that the MT transcribes would include headings such as Subjective, Objective, etc., however the actual template that includes the logo, wording such as Patient Name, Date of Service, Attending Physician, etc. are not paid for. The template consists of about 8 lines total.
Since you don't believe in Christmas, can we expect you to volunteer to work that day? nm

I would just expect a "Good job and we appreciate all the hard work you did for us over the

Since your work will have to be edited for a while, expect 5 to 6 cpl realistically.
if you took one of the better courses and did not get placed, then you should expect an increase in that line rate within WEEKS of hire, not MONTHS. All the MTSO should have to do is see that you are getting the job done then raise your line rate. Good luck!
Transcend Services doesn't send work outside of the US.

Without the MTs, the site would cease to exist.

These kinds of posts never cease to amaze me (sm)

Your company didn't have to send you anything. A card is a gift -- which is optional. Since when should a recipient of a gift get to dictate what the gift is or is not?

Also, I don't think you mentioned the size of your company. Consider that not only is your attitude about the whole thing probably way off, but also you're not being realistic to think a company would have time to send each employee an individualized message.

They remembered you. They took time to send SOMETHING. Be glad and grateful. Did you send them anything?

He refuses?? He refuses??!! Who does he think he is, your dad?? nm

Husband refuses...
My dear, you need to grow a back bone. Otherwise, you are in a for a lifetime of misery. You are smart enough to figure out the MT field is dying, so you must be smart enough to find a way to go to dental hygiene school.

First of all, a man does not "babysit" his own children - he takes care of them. He should be doing that anyway, whether you are there or not.

You had better renegotiate this situation right now, or your resentment will just simmer and boil over.
Husband refuses...
Excuse me...you work all day also. You obviously transcribe for Spheris. Do you clean house, do laundry, cook? Further your education!
ProScript Documentation Services does not send work overseas or employ any overseas MTs. (nm)

My husband refuses to let me go back to school

I would like to further my education in a more stable field that will never outsource.  I am constantly worrying about the state of the MT field.  I asked my husband if he would be okay with me going back to school to become a dental hygenist. He said absolutely not and to stop panicking.  He said Speris is not sending all the jobs to India, and he refuses to babysit at night when he works all day.  I am so ------.  I need his help to succeed because I do not have any family to depend on.  How can I realize my dreams.  Thanks for letting me vent.  So mad I can spit.

DH refuses to watch it again- says we fell for all the hype - about (sm)

the show being a "classic" .  People on we barely knew.  We kept waiting for it to get "good".  Then the ending!!!!

Holy cow is right.  Is he dead??

as long as the govt continually refuses to

Our kids will be at risk.  I am one who pushed for public schools, thinking if a kid can get through public schools they end up being able to deal with all types/cultures of people.  The govt puts *security guards* in most public schools and the incidents have escalated in the past 20 years!!!  Until the govt cares about our kids, IN ALL AREAS, we are not safe.  I just read today that the US is not checking prisoner mail all across this country regarding terrorists....it's like it's a HALF-ARSED job is being done....they are only going to START checking all the cargo on airplanes, did you know that?  Yep, the cargo underneath where we all sit on a plane is JUST NOW going to commence getting screened/checked.

It's, unfortunately, been evident to me for way too long a time in this country that they don't TRULY CARE about our children, and our children ARE THE FUTURE.  Really galls me and my child is now 25.  *tsk tsk on all of them.......

It is gratifying to see an MT who refuses to be treated as a second class employee. Way to go!!
:)
it makes sense to everyone w/o a hard head that refuses to let new info in.
You are backwards and gawd help those people you edit. Such a condescending know-it-all attitude. Looking forward for some great karma for you. Some pompous know-it-all to point out all your mistakes would be just perfect. Love it!
I would, but they ran out all the smaller businesses here. nm
..
cleaning for businesses
Definitely pays more and there is less grunge to clean. You vacuum, empty trash cans and easy. Probaby depending on the size of the office, good money
friends of mine pay house cleaners once or twice a week, $75 for half a day.. the hispanics do about 2 or three hours and leave to another job.

Ummm, some MT's run their own businesses...

which was exactly the kind of advice she was asking for..

your life may be narrowed down to only MT but some of us do much, much more

They are running businesses SM
and a new MT is costly to train in the way you want.  As far as making sure EVERY report is 98% or better, I'm sorry but there is no medium or large company doing that.  As long as MTs are paid on production, errors are going to be made.  I think you probably need to focus your attention on the work you are doing, don't bother with other people's reports.  As for people working more than *they should be,* again, production is the key and the more an MT types, the better their paycheck is and the better the supervisor likes them.
Businesses also have people to
answer to. They hire for when they need people to work. If they cannot accommodate the schedule an individual wants, then that person just needs to look elsewhere.
Did you know that not everyone can get direct deposit for their businesses? sm
There are a lot of factors, and banks will not take on a small company. They want to provide services for bigger companies that have a lot of money going through their accounts.

I deal with one of the biggest banks in the country and they will not let me do direct deposit until we deposit over $100,000 per month or it is not worth it for them.

The smaller banks in my area do not even offer it.

All I can do is get checks out on time and correctly.
Outsourcing affecting other businesses...

My husband's co-worker's wife is losing clients to cheaper labor overseas. She owns an advertising company and would charge $25,000 per client, and now they're paying $600 for the same thing, but not here. She has lost about $100,000, and they are struggling now. These people have tapped into something that is really hurting our country. I'm afraid for our kids' future and what they might not have, nevermind ours. I just thought I'd throw this out there. I know this is nothing new to hear.

? for small in-home businesses
I am looking into adding a 1-800 number to my system, DH thinks that you pay for the minutes you use, is this correct? One of my Transcriptionist travels to my house to work, which is 45 minutes away from her's.
I think it is how businesses is done. Hospitals are always looking for a better deal
Since all transcription services "GUARANTEE" turnaround time with complete accuracy a hospital will try to find the rock bottom rate they can get the work done for.  Since they don't deal directly with the Transcriptionist they are going to look to the company that will insure them quality work at the lowest price possible.  The service cannot make a profit if they keep reducing their prices to secure/keep a client so they have no choice but reduce compensation.   It is such a competitive business so if a service is willing to do it for less but still provide turnaround and quality that is the service that is awarded the account.  It just trickles down to the transcriptionist basically taking what is offered because they are not doing the negotiating.  I think the trend is keep cpl as low as  they can but making speed and quality mandatory.  If you want to be considered for employment because of this competitiveness a transcriptionist has to accept this as not a field where wages are rising...if anything they are going down.   It baffles me because all in all other health fields, salaries are going UP.   With transcription salaries are other going down or the rate is the same as it was 15-20 years ago but the quality standards are much higher...that is the difference - the standard of quality but not the pay.   It is the trend of the industry.  It is considered such an advantage to work out of your home and be afforded a flexible schedule that of course you are willing to take less plus combine that with the threat of having your job outsourced because "you make too much and others including other countries  will work for much lower wages"  it seems that lowering cpl will continue as the trend.
I don't want the govt telling businesses how
That is MY privilege to negotiate with my employer!

Too much interference by governments already by forcing minimum wage, etc.

You'll have businesses closing down if you put too much mandatory regulation in the mix. It's a free enterprise, you know.

Pay their own operating cost sm
This is not for the MT to pay for heaven sakes, this is the MTSO operating expenses, (the cost to do business, it is THEIR CLIENT) It is all a bunch of bull and the MTs are thinking, well--ll okay-yyyy I guess.
I got your point. I already knew that. Fact is, most businesses sm
in other areas give benefits. We all know that holidays are given at the discretion of any business. The fact is though that most businesses do offer them off in other areas, hospitals do, and why wouldn't an MTSO want to make her employees more attracted to her service? That is my point. I understand your point. I had a point too. :)
Yes, I would be very angry. Men do not run businesses with emotions - they don't care! nm

operating system not found.;;
Does the bios recognize the harddrive? did you try a bootdisk from bootdisk.com? Also if the harddrive is okay, and win98 (what operating system are you using?) is corrupted, you will need a win98cd or you will need the restore disk that came with the computer
Operating with only one beater in the bowl.

DOS is a pre-Windows operating sytem, it isn't
a platform.  I currently use WP5.1, which is DOS based.    It is difficult to find compatible software sometimes.  Stedman's Spellcheck is no longer available for DOS.  There are some Expanders that are not compatible with DOS.
Easy for what operating system?
That trick doesn't work with my Vista computer.  Try again.
operating system question(s)

I have been advised recently that my doctor has purchased a new dictating system that will not work with Windows XP Home Edition, and that I will have to purchase Windows XP Pro Edition in order to continue tyiping for this doctor.

I've done some brief research to see if there is an upgrade from Home Edition to Pro Edition, and I haven't found one.  I'm pretty sure there probably is no upgrade, as they appear to be 2 different OPs.   I'm pretty sure I'll have to purchase the Pro Edition full install.  Now, when one changes operating systems, doesn't that entail having to reinstall all other software, quickwords, macros, templates, etc.?

many businesses are doing credit checks before they hire. Some of the reasons are
for example, an employee with a very bad credit rating, carrying a lot of debt might be deemed to be a greater risk for financial problems, such as embezzling. Also, if one cannot handle one's own finances, tends to show that perhaps they can't handle other responsibilities, particularly supervisory duties. Just what I've heard in the business columns...
I'm with you, we're all still human beings operating these
It doesnt hurt to say a few words on behalf on someone at the other end.  If you don't have that within yourself, and you don't need it in return, you're a cold and lost person.
Actually, with a call to Microsoft, the OS--operating system-- SM
Can be reinstalled on the same computer, in the event of a crash or need to reinstall because of a crash or just cleaning up the computer by reinstalling the OS, or the change to a new motherboard or hard drive, etc. I'm not too knowledgeable on this, but on other IT web sites IT professionals routinely re-install for a fresh system and they CALL the Microsoft # for reauthorization. At least on XP. Which is the way it should be. If my computer crashes, it is still the same computer and the same OS I paid hundreds of dollars for in some cases, so yes, you can install on the same computer. THere would be a mutiny off Windows if you could not. ANd they know this. They ran into this with Vista and had to back down. Computer professionals routinely re-install for a fresh system or when a computer has difficulties.

Don't correct my mistakes on grammar and caps, i didn't proof.
You can still buy some computers with the choice of operating systems.
I know for a fact that you can do this on the Dell website, although not all models offer that option. Your best bet is to find someone who can buy a computer that does what you need it do to, no more and no less. That way you can pay for only what you want/need.
MS does not produce a new operating system every year, trust me on that.

Vista was 5 years in the making, which is pretty much the norm for most reliable Software.

Help with "no operating system found" message sm
Laptop with Windows XP shows "no operating system found" - desktop working. Did this before and comes back with turning on and off, went into "setup" and shows I have so many MB stored on hard drive but cannot get system to boot, misplaced XP CD. This time I cannot get it to come back and depend on laptop at end of day to research, e-mail, etc., as desktop for too many hours is too painful. Any way to get the Windows XP to start up so I can do a system restore to an earlier time? Perhaps an update did this. It is "dead" but everything is still on there, lots of "good stuff" - a Dell so no one else will touch it and I can't get online with them as my other computer is not a Dell.

message re. "no operating system found"
No warranty- a client co. added some software to the XP which was very expensive, i.e., voice, lots of extras I used for over 2 years, "loaded" and it did this to me before but was able to get it back by unplugging, restarting several times. No one else will touch a "Dell" and that co. is closed.  After several "hundred" times I can only do an "F2" and it shows me there is a hard drive with several MB of stuff on there but won't load it, tried everything in the system - hate to lose all this "good" stuff. Is there any way I can transfer my XP from my desktop or run the laptop from my desktop somehow. I think if I could get a startup menu and choose a time to restore it to, like last month or something, I could use it and stop any further "updates" which really mess up things. Gosh, I loved my laptop as it is not "painful" to use and I do have such back pain at end of day, but then I am preaching to the choir about back pain and this job, aren't I? Hate to give up on it when I know there are some good programs on there. Sorry for the rant, I have let this "take over my life" trying to get it to work again. ***$#!**  Thank you!
Vista is just the operating system. You buy the word processing software separate...sm...

A computer's OS (operating system) is only meant for a 1 time install on 1 pc. People like yours

who abuse this are just looking for a cheap break, jack up the price (theoretically speaking) for the rest of us, and are asking for a myriad of problems on their pcs.  To deter this behavior, about 1 year ago, many computer companies ceased to include all software when packaging the pc for shipment.  It is because of software abuse/misuse, computers that are delivered with a pre-installed OS are delivered without the OS + other necessary software, due to behaviors such as yours and many others.  However, if you call the company and verbally request all software: OS (installation CD), as well as other necessary software (tools systems, drivers, diagnostics, utilities, print driver, internet security, and WP/Word/Excel, et al), they will gladly send it to you free of charge.
