are only as good as the updates and are NOT 100% all the time. NO program is 100%. Hackers are finding new ways to compromise computers every single day and no program can protect from all of them. The longer you are up and running, the more chance of being invaded. don't fool yourself into thinking antivirus and antispyware are fool proof, because they are not. You have to think smart and protect yourself too, by shutting down when not in use and allowing new updates to take effect. duh.
My virus protection keeps catching emails with the blackmail.F virus. That
has been going around for a few days and different variants of that are popping up. Don't know if it is related as I have not had time to research it. Watch out for that one too.
Have you done spyware scans, defrag, virus scan and reboot? All of these help me. Run spyware

There is a company who is connected with Norton, Symantic (spelling ?) that has Eanthology/stop sign. Look it up on the web. This costs less than $7 a month (I have 3 computers on this). You download from the web, has a firewall, pop, the whole 9 yards. I have a VIP subscription and they have been on the phone with me for an hour before fixing my computer. I would recommend them to anyone. You can also find them by putting in Stop-sign computer protection service. Let me know if you need additional info
Can anyone recommend a good virus/security protection?
I currently use a program called PC cillin. I have used Norton, and with both I still managed to get "worms" on my computer. Also, my internet service is with AOL.

Probably a virus/spyware
I had this happen a couple of years ago and it was pretty disconcerting. I think I ended up running my virus scan, my Ad-Aware...I am trying to remember, but I think the thing that replaced Google ended up being a program that I had to go into my Add/Remove programs and remove it. It was a pain in the butt and kinda scary knowing that something had a hold of my computer and God only knew what was going to be damaged/hijacked. I don't know how tech-comfortable you are, but if you've got any tech-savvy friends, it might be worth summoning them over to find where this may have taken root.
Wrong. That is why you have virus protectection and anti-spyware. To protect 100% of the time.

I use Sylvan software's medical spell checker and ...am
also their Shortcut word expander. I love both of them. Unfortunately, the spellchecker does not work in DocQscribe, which I work in now. I wish I could get it to because I hate the DocQScribe spellchecker.

I hope that is not true. My son works for our police department and they use AVG free, in fact that is where I heard about it. I have had Norton - so slow and also others in the past.

I am getting ready to go to EditScript Version 8 and am currently using McAfee software. It does not seem that it has the ability to exclude certain directories and subdirectories from scanning. Is there a better anti-virus program out there to use? Thanks.

That's a virus scanner, not spyware scanner.
There's a difference between the two, although sometimes they overlap. You'll need both AVG and AdAware/Spybot to be covered.

Download FTP SERVER software (it can be found free). Then have the docs
upload their files to YOUR server. There is no cost to you or the doc to do this. Someone does have to pay for the recorder, which I have chosen to do for 2 docs. The other one purchases his own when needed (twice in 7 years). One picks up files on FTP server. The other 2 still want theirs printed. Since they are not in same city, I mail them via snail mail and they are happy with that. I also do fax any stat reports to them at no charge simply because I have unlimited long distance.
Tech question. I have discovered spyware on my PC. It is blocking me from using anti-spyware softw
and fix the problem. I need help! Any ideas on how to locate the offending program and get rid of it. I downloaded Ad-Aware in an tried to run it and it's blocking that too and my McAfee is being blocked as well. I cannot run a scan at all.

Autocorrect can get corrupted.
There are technical discussions about all this stuff on the Productivity Talk board (Google that; I don't have the link handy). Apparently, if you get too many entries into Autocorrect, the file can get corrupted, and wreak havoc on your system (and on you).
I only have experience with Shorthand, which actually works a lot like autocorrect. Others swear by Instant Text, which I have not used.... One advantage of ShortHand is that you can do a 30-day free trial. And SH works with ALL Windows applications.
Download Express Scribe, it's free, when you download the voice files you will listen to....
them in Express Scribe and you can set your footpedal up. I forget where the downloaded files go, can't remember if you can put them where you want them but I would have to search for them to download to Express Scribe - maybe someone else can tell you how. It is much better than what you are doing.

It happens b/c your normal.dot file becomes corrupted.
There are two ways to deal with this. Either use a program specifically designed for speed typing (Instant Text, Smartype, etc.), or, if that's not an option, back up your normal.dot file each and every day. Email me if you want instructions on how to do the latter.
By the way, a speedtyping program (I highly recommend Instant Text) will serve you far better than the wimpy resources in Word (Auto Text and Auto Correct).
Zip drive discs - help with corrupted disc
Anyone know of any tricks to get into a zip drive disk that desn't want to open up? I put the disc into the zip drive and try to open, but it keeps telling me disc not formatted. I have a lot of files in the disc that I need. I may have over filled it. I'm hoping there is a magic way to get into the disc somehow so I can retrieve the files in it.
I just installed WP12 because my 11 files were corrupted (or so they tell me).
How do I get the files to ALWAYS save in .wpd without having to tell it to. it is defaulting to all files. Thanks.

fine as far as doing nothing illegal. Also, when a deposited check bounces and there have been checks written assuming the check was good, that is not illegal. However, writing a check and KNOWING the funds are not there is check kiting, which is a federal offense. Do banks prosecute? Normally they will not, unless it comes to the point of numerous checks OBVIOUSLY written knowing they will not clear on the second or third time (maximum of 3 times). Then, the recipients of the checks can press charges. Believe me it happens. I was a bank manager for many years, and, although it didn't happen very often, it did happen.
Also, in reality banks love check bouncers. They are the "money maker" accounts. Those fees add up VERY quickly.
My dh is a deputy sheriff, and the jail in his county has many, many inmates in for check-kiting. In our state the first conviction is 1-5 years, and it get worse from there.
Who hasn't written a check at the grocery store on a Thursday night, knowing the money wouldn't be there until they made a deposit on Friday. I know I have. One day is pretty safe, but now that so many banks use the same clearing house, writing a check even 2 days before a deposit is risky...unfortunately speaking from experience here.

It is all in the numbers really. What you owe and what your earning potential is, possibly the situation at hand but not like before (I filed Ch 13 after misfortune to save my home, paid back debt over 3 years with my wages garnished). Bad timing for this economy and many people will suffer, especially the elderly and the ill.

DQS spell checker
When you type "whre" instead of "where" when you spell check it the first word that comes up for a correction option is "whore." Wonder how many reports typed by some of our wonderfully accurate Medquist MT's made it through with the word whore in the report?

I have used steadmans spell checker for word in the past but the company I work for uses Spellex. I cant really tell a difference between the two but I do know Spellex has a free trial on there site so you can try it before you buy.

I have used Stedman's spell checker on two different jobs and love it, but not the price, especially since it is just for one user. Can I really only put it on one computer? I am an IC and have two computers, and now need to buy a medical spell checker. What do all of you guys recommend? I like the fact that the spell checker automatically corrects a lot of the words, and does not simply flag them. I also do not want to go through a manual spell check after I finish a document. Is there another spell checker out there that works as well for less money?

If you are working off a template or sample that has been spell checked previously you have to reset your document in - tools, options, spell check - check document - so that it will re-look at everything. I do this with every document just to be sure.

I highly recommend Dorland's spell checker CD that comes with their illustrated dictionary (I paid about $55.00 two years ago). It has all of the words the dictionary has but the beauty of it is you install it directly into your word processing program. You have to change your dictionary from default to "medical". It then works like any other spell checker, except it is all medical. It saves a tone of time and is great for accuracy.
If u need server software, try guild ftp. If just user software
then try cuteftp, coffeecupftp, or wsftp. They don't charge a line rate and I believe guildftp server software is still free.

I purchased a new computer that has Word 2007. The Stedman's Spell Checker that I have is the 2005 version. Does anyone know if it will work with Word 2007 or do I just need to purchase a new medical spell checker?
