file converter
You can go on the net and find a free file converter to convert regular files to wav files that can be played on Express Scribe.
Then I think you save the files to that converter and choose what kind of file you want to convert it to. Then when it is saved in your documents, you can upload it to ES.
Need help finding a file converter. sm
Unfortunately, I had to bite the proverbial bullet and buy a new computer, which came of course with Vista. One of my accounts uses dvf files and the sony plug-in for that for use with my gearplayer is of course not yet compatible with Vista. (sigh)
Does anyone know a good converter I could download to convert the dvf files to wav or dss and IS compatible with Vista?
Thanks for any help.
Try using WinAmp. It has a file converter in it.
I've converted mp3 to .wav and they had a great sound! The multiple types of files are found under "encoding format." Hope this helps!
Did a search on google and saw the ads.
I will make some phone calls today. I don't wear my rings and have no heirs so it seems like the thing to do.
Thank you both for responding.
Try this in your Google search.
Type it exactly as it appears below and you will find that you have hits for Amazon and Tiger Direct on the first page, either 2007 or 2003 version alone.

Might be careful in the future clicking on anything without downloading to desktop first and checking for authenticity as well as virus problems or spam. Good luck!

The reason I asked this is because the dictator spelled Tisseel, and I have always used Tisseal, and in doing a Google search, both of them are listed and both are used as tissue glue. Just wondered if there was a difference.

This is an interesting video about techniques for Google searching IF anyone needs help.
I have had problems with buffering on some of these sites (buffering...a few words...buffering ... a few words). I usually wait until it goes to the end and then hit play and it will play all the way through. There may be someone on here that can tell us how to do this part better! Any suggestions welcome!
You may have to copy and paste this...don't know. Hope this helps some of you. It helped me!

Google custom search for MTs
Hi y'all,
Came across this customized search engine for MTs. Thought I'd share it with all of you. I've used it and it does work for sure. Search results are more focused and relevant. Definitely better than the general Google search that throws up all kinds of irrelevant results sometimes. Link below.

Try doing a search on your normal.dot file (sm)
If you have more than one of them, it could be conflicting and causing your Word to run slow. I rec'd an error msg about not having enough memory. My dearest friend spent hours helping me to figure this out. If that is the problem, you need to be sure to save one of them and delete the others. Before you delete anything, be sure to add a word into your autocorrects, save it, and then save that normal.dot so you do not lose all of your autocorrects. Hope this helps.

Something great-- Using Google-- set to use the automatic function of completing the search
For anyone like myself who never used the automatic completion function of Google, IT IS GREAT.
I just started using it, and when I typed in like the first 2 words of something I had never heard before, like say you were typing "sphincter of", then sphincter of Oddi would be one of the choices that Google would automatically bring up.
This is so great! What a time saver. Try it.
Someone with more tech expertise can maybe say how to set the settings so the Google automatic completion comes on. sometimes it would be there and sometimes not, but I downloaded some add-on for Firefox that makes it always there. It was the "Customize Google" add-on for Firefox.
So, if you are using Firefox (Mozilla) browser, go to the add-on page (Google it) and then download the "Customize Google" add-on and then set the settings. I think this was the most useful. There is a way to set it from Google, but it kept not working somehow, the settings would go away.
Other downloads I have used-- other Firefox add-ons that I found helpful: Adblock Plus. Google Toolbar for Firefox (different than Customize Google), and Auto Copy. -- Auto Copy will automatically put whatever you select on a Web sit onto your clipboard, so you can paste it right into the document.
Hope someone finds this all helpful. Thanks for all your gals' help over the years. I have learned a lot and got a lot of tips, and so wanted to post this.

Blog about it on wordpress.com - it will show up in google/search engines. This really works.
Categorize each post with as many tags as you can type related to medical, any words you can think of that people would search for. Maybe someone with SEO experience can chime in here? :) :) :)
The categories show up as "tags" show up in search engines.

We can also give information who they can contact at their local hosptial to find out if their records are going to India/Asia. Most people don't know to ask for the director of health information or operations manager.
Also ad the url to your blog to google:

Is there someone willing to post a form letter? We could copy and paste it in our our blogs. My writing skills are not good enough yet. ;)

Sound File
I have the Start n' Stop system, as well. I had used an FTP program to download the files I was to transcribe and sometimes during transfer, the file would become corrupted and all I would get was static. This had nothing to do with the foot pedal or the SnS system, it had to do with the FTP program only. Ask your provider to resend the file. You will have to delete the file you already have though, or it will be the same way. good luck
You could always try doing a system-wide search for a patient you know is on the file and maybe

Do a search to see where the file is located on your hard drive.
Make note of the full location name. Next, in ES, choose Load and go to the above-noted location to find the file. Hit the Load button and you're in business.
What is the sound file extension?
In other words, what type of sound file is it? There are different sound file formats out there. You may be able to play it in Express Scribe so you'd be able to use your footpedal. It sounds as if you have your computer set to play certain sound files through QuickTime. You're not using a Mac, are you? Or do you have the PC version of Quicktime?
You can change the file association by single right clicking on the file, open Properties, then change Opens With by clicking the box to the right and selecting a different sound player. Another way to do it would be to open Express Scribe (if that's what you're using, as long as it is compatible with your sound file type), then Open Dictation File and browse for the sound file. Some of the sound files need patches from Express Scribe to be able to play, but the program and patches are free.
And yes, those companies that provide their lousiest dictation to test with are probably ones you wouldn't want to work for anyway, because the test file IS representative of the garbage they'll be pushing at you daily. (Especially if you do really well on it!!!)
Ctrl/S gives you the search function. Put in the names where appropriate and find a file you

Sometimes it helps to convert the sound file - sm
I notice that when I play straight DSS files my Bytescribe will not restart at the beginning after I reach the end, but rewind 2 seconds or so and keep replaying the end; but if I convert them to .wav files (which I do by "opening" them with another .wav player called "PowerPlayer"--downloaded the free trial and just use it for this) then I do not have this problem, it will just restart at the beginning after I reach the end. So that may be affecting it, or a setting is off, or there is corruption of the file or player maybe. Lots of possibilities.
Regarding the buzzing. The ad that has a buzz sound file
attached to it has been queued for removal, however it usually takes a few days for Google to remove the ad. We have no control over what appears, but we can remove ads. Unfortunately, there is a wait time that is unavoidable. The buzzing only occurs when that particular banner appears. When you hear the buzzing try refreshing the page or there are some instructions in the thread further down the page where you can set parameters regarding sound accordingly.
There are sound file conversion utilities out there
that you can download for free. I actually used to have the opposite problem; the doc sent me WMA files which uploaded fine but wouldn't play without glitches, so I used to convert them to WAV files (which worked well). The program I used was called BeeThink. I never actually tried to use it to convert in the opposite direction, so I am not sure it will work for that, but it's worth a try.

Anyone out there using a 9-pin to USB converter - sm
for their foot pedal? Do they work? Just got a new computer and when ordering it did not think about the ports (plus they were not mentioned anywhere in the ordering process from what I recall), there is no 9-pin or printer port (though that does not matter as my newer printer is USB). But my foot pedal is a 9-pin and works well for all 3 of my PT jobs and associated different software and players. Just afraid that they won't work with a converter, guess I will find out for sure in a few days but thought I'd see if any one else had been through this already.
