Did you see the story about bake sales/childhood obesity?

From the AP out of Minneapolis. "Study links bake sales, weight problems."

Puhleez. What next?

When are the "Diet Police" going to stop and realize that the majority of the obesity "problem" among children begins at home? Who gives these kids the money to go eat at McDonalds and loads their cupboards with junk food anyway?

Sure my kids like sweets and they like McDonalds, but monitor and moderation goes a long way.

Something tells me that a pencil sale just isn't going to bring in that much cash flow.

I asked an obesity MD speaking at a conference, and she said save your money.

I had a lot of childhood trauma too...

I first started school, first grade.  I'm of mixed race, looked different than the other kids, and I was picked on for it a lot, verbally and also physically and sexually assaulted by a group of boys.  I'm an only child, so I internalized everything and do not know how to turn to others because of how I see the world as 'hostile.'  I also grew up in a very bad neighborhood with a single mother who was never home, or who partied and I saw a lot of violence with her or others.  I was alone alot and someone was shot on our back porch, I didnt see it happen, but I was coming home when the news cameras were there, and the police, and there was tons of blood, and me, mom and grandma cleaned it up.

At a young age, you don't process trauma like you do as an adult, so you're left with the aftermath.  My adrenalin kicked in, I was terrified, and now as an adult, I have panic attacks out of no where and i'm fearful that people are going to hurt me, attack me or mentally abuse me in some way.  In my mind I know this doesnt make sense, but my body just kicks into that adrenalin mode when i'm in a similar situation that I was when I was a kid, and it just happens.

The brain is very powerful, and with my slowly changing it, the panic has lessened and I view people a little more differently.  But its a constant training.  You know how you learned the ABC song when you were a kid, by repitition?  Try forgetting it, you can't.  Thats how powerful the brain is, train it to remember positive reinforcements just by thinking them over and over and it won't forget and you can look forward to a more peaceful future.

Good luck, it takes a lot of work but it will change you for the better!

p.s. my clinics give me Bday gifts and bake stuff for me! I'm a skinny single girl and I guess th

My best girlfriend from childhood lives sm
in Colorado Springs and absolutely loves it! She is a school principal out there. She has several friends working at home as MTs and are doing well. I know nothing about where or what though. I live in NC and she and I are both originally from Michigan.
POLL: childhood memories

Remember mickey mouse ice cream bars?  They were shaped like mickey's head and the face was vanilla ice creame with chocolate ice cream for eyes and mouth.  His ears were chocolate covered.  I don't think they make them anymore.  What treats do you miss that you can no longer find?

My DH lived 1/4 mile from my childhood home,
can't you tell I'm a country kid. I thought he was a geek when he was younger (he knows this), he was a looker in high school but had a steady girlfriend and was subsequently engaged, then she left him and he went in the service. Once he came home I was totally surprised at what a great man he'd become, a hottie and a really nice guy too! Her loss was my gain and the rest is history as that was 26 years ago and he's still the love of my life!
Absolutely! They miss out on a great childhood.
I have a therapist friend and that's exactly what she told me. They are suddenly seeing many many teens for depression/anxiety. Very sad.
I should try this. Posttraumatic stress syndrome is what I have from a childhood filled with neglec
I am afraid of everything. It is exhausting being in a state of fight or flight. I have isolated myself and refused to have children as my own childhood was so terrifying. Did not help that we moved numerous times during school years. Thank goodness for a few sensitive teachers and the parents of a friend. With MT, at least I know what is expected of me. There is no guessing games like there are in my mind when I am in the midst of people.
i'm right there with you. i was in sales
for 15+ yrs and turned to MT so that i could get away from the mean world. 90% of people have the attitude that "start off evil and you'll get what you want faster and sometimes even more than you wanted just to get rid of them".  i hardly ever hear please or thank you from someone.  i'm teaching my 3 yo please/thank you/share/etc, etc, but then i cry to see how he's treated by his class mates.  i feel like i'm setting him up to be stomped on just for being polite and doing what is right.  I'm also in my mid 30's and went back to college last semester just so i could add some things to my resume since nowadays a b.s. alone isn't worth beans but i took my class over the internet through a local college.  i couldn't afford this semester, but next semester i'll take another class online. if i had to sit next to these people 1/2 my age with the attitudes that most seem to have i would snap. I wish being nice was as contagious as being mean.   i know there are nice people out there-but boy are they getting harder and harder to find!!!
Oh, of course, I'm certain you have the sales...

numbers right at your fingertips.  It appears you are the one how has been duped by believing the BOS is the ultimate authority.  The majority of MTs know better, and the majority of healthcare providers have never HEARD of it.  Many of us bought the book thinking it was actually useful, and newbies are told they MUST have it.  Now, mind you, they are told this by the very people who are in bed with the AAMT.

Buy into it if you will (obviously you already have).  That doesn't mean the rest of us need to do so.

ebay sales
Well, my accounts were always looked at..I had soaps, body facial products and line reducers (for face), lingerie, halloween products, kitchen products..movie videos, CDs, candles, shoes (Pay Less always has two for one or one for half price), books (you can get great used books for cheap and sell them for so much more..like a used Harry Potter..you can get a lot)..I just posted them and they were looked at..what matters is how you introduce your products..you post them and then tell about them..so you need to post good things about your products, you know, pump up your product..Yes, I truly think you can quit anything else and go ebay full time..I was thinking about that but going to the post office every day and packaging the products got to me..If I had had someone to help me, I think I could have done it..Like I posted previously, Im gonna do it again, when I move back to NY next year..There are so many surplus companies, manufacturers who will sell to you wholescale..Gosh, I had so much left off when I quit.LOL..I had purses, body jewelry, lingerie, kitchenware..you name it..I gave it all away to friends and used it for myself..Just surf for wholescale companies in the net..I loved selling on Ebay, plus you meet such nice people..I met people from England, Germany and all over the USA (through emails and phone calls)..It was a great experience..What I recommend is surf for wholesale companies and when you shop, buy two for one, go to Factory for U, Big Lots, Annas Linens, always when you shop be looking for something you can sell..Buy one get one for free always was great for me..
have a friend who does car sales

She said some banks won't finance KIAs because of that.  Way too easy to stay upside down in your financing.

You also may have to charge sales tax sm
depending on what state you live in. PA requires an MT to charge sales tax on work that is sent to someplace within the Commonwealth. I am exempt because my work is received from/sent to out of the Commonwealth. However, to answer the business license question, I don't have to have on for PA.
It is all about marketing and sales. Looks like they have your $$

Sales slip?
If you still have the sales slip, you have a good chance of returning it.
Sales Letter
Well, you could make a cute flyer with your picture in it and possibly your email and phone number. But you best bet is to dress up nice and go straight to the office manager with flyer in hand and say, "Help me get my foot in the door please?"
You are obviously young and eager with little experience. Any job at this point is your ace in the hole. So be direct and serious and leave the flyer with them. Most people just use business cards. If the local area proves fruitless, there are companies online that hire and you could get your experience that way also.
SALES PEOPLE LIE

Did you know that it is totally legal to lie?  I mean, it may be immoral and NOT right, but it is totally legal.  So, those who can profit by it, have everything to gain by lying to us and nothing to lose by being dishonest in this way.  This seems like such a simple rule of life, but it is one that did not become crystal clear to me until I became a medical Transcriptionist (and also when I bought a house, but that is another long story).  Sadly, it is my own fault for being so trusting and gullible.

Six years ago, I was incredibly naive and fell for the STUFF that was feed to me by the people selling the CS course.  They offered me was seemed at the time to be hope.  In reality, they took advantage of my state of neediness.

I graduated from CS almost 4 years ago.  I work my butt off, sometimes as many as 3 jobs at a time, and my gross income last year was a pathetic $21,000!!!  I have one adult child who takes care of himself.

So, I wish this woman, the one with the 5 children with one being a special needs child and her husband in Iraq, much luck, and I hope she has a great support system.

PA Sales Tax - HEADS UP PA MTs

Everyone has to know about this. I posted this on the tax board, too.

How desperate are the governors getting? PA sent out tax forms to everyone that bought cigarettes from a Native American reservation and they want their tax money. One woman in PA was hit up for over $4,800 and last week, they slapped a Sheriff's Sale sign on her property.

Now, my DH received a letter today. They want anyone in business who bought anything from out-of-state companies (office supplies, equipment, tools, etc.) that don't reciprocate taxes to PA, to pay up. This doesn't just apply to last year. This goes all the way back to 1981!!! Since when, since records do not have to be kept after a certain amount of years, how can they do this?  DH doesn't have to worry about it that much. He usually always buys in PA.

I certainly do not have any receipts back to 1981 when I was an IC!

It's bad enough the governor is "threatening" to raise property taxes if he can't pass the higher income tax, but now this. I think our state government should stop the spending like he's always done. We're broke, yet he keeps handing out money.

Out-of-state sales tax question
I would have posted on the other thread, but it is gone already. My apologies.

Do any MTSOs charge sales tax to out-of-state clients? Long before transcription, I worked for a company that did not charge sales tax on product sold out of state but did charge sales tax for any services peformed on-site, even for out-of-state customers. They insisted if the service was performed in the state, they needed to charge sales tax. I have been subcontracting out of state and every time I called to get a sales tax license they would very nicely tell me to stuff it until I got an in-state customer. Now I have just gotten my first out-of-state account (direct client) and want to make absolutely sure I should not charge sales tax for my service.

Thank you.
Idea for sales letter
What do you all this of this? I just graduated, and I want to market to doctor's offices. I made a flyer to send. I thought I would also send a sales letter that is formatted like a SOAP. I don't know how much competition I will have, and I'm trying to stand out. Too silly? Any comments?
VR demo - not a sales pitch

You need to have the Windows Media Player loaded onto your system to view the video. It takes about 30 seconds to load and is about one minute in length.

I think after you watch it you'll understand why so many medical professionals (i.e. doctors) are switching over to speech recognition.

If you're an IC, you should be charging PA sales tax as well. sm
I know there are A LOT of PA MT's who are not doing this, making it more difficult for those on the up-and-up. However, if you are providing MT services to anyone other than a non-profit (with valid PA Sales Tax exemption), then you should be charging the 6% State Sales Tax and filing a Sales Tax Return.

The Use Tax issue that started this post has been in place for a long time, it's just that the Commonwealth has decided to become more aggressive in their pursuit of this lost revenue stream.
If you have a Paypal account, pay to sales@mtstars.com. Thank you!

PA requires you to charge sales tax on your work...
if you send your completed work to a MT company or doctor within PA.  However, I send my work out of state, so I don't have to charge sales tax and I don't need a license.  I had asked someone at one of the companies I IC for and she said that she had heard of that before from one of the other girls.  When I lived in WA state, I had a business license from the state and had to file every year.  The sales tax thing was a real shock to hear at first!
hit some yard sales early in the morning

This belongs on classifed board, for sales
x
I've never heard of sales tax being charged for a service, only
for a tangible product.
It is true...and the sales reps will tell you anything to obtain your business, but then they...sm
get you once you start using the ULD.  I know, I have been told the same thing that you say you have been told but then I received the dreaded "cut off" notice.  I wish you the best, but it is just a matter of time until they get to your area.  It's not allowed!
Garage sales, consignment stores, coupons
If your income for the prior year is below 24,000 in Calif., you are eligible for 20% discount on gas/elec. Also, if your income is less than 12,000/yr, you are eligible for food bank visits once a month which total about $120.00. It has been six years since I went down this road, so the figure may have changed.

After a divorce, major surgery and no job, I found myself penniless. I had yard sales daily. Went to swap meets and sold my things there. Also, took my finer clothes to a consignment shop. Used coupons to determine what I would be eating. Thank God, I had no children.

I think when you have kids, you really need a nest egg of some sort that is absolutely untouchable.

This sounds like a temporary situation if you price your home to sell.
Try ebay, yard sales, Recycled Software or BuyCheapSoftware.com
to find inexpensive software. Also, see if you can find a newer version of MS Works because I think it comes with Word now, or you can buy a standalone version of Word without springing for MS Office.

For that matter, wait until you find a job before worrying about it. Not everybody uses MS Word, and some companies provide their own software for you to use. What about going back to Medware or another company that provides software and/or equipment?
I hate crowds. Big sales bring out the worst in people.
I tried it twice several years ago. Never again. People were just rudely shoving everyone else around trying to get from store to store to gather up all the freebies or super deals.

We tried to go to the movies instead, but all the Harry Potter matinees were sold out. Again.
There was a story in the

Yeah, and it's so easy working in the fields picking your vegetables so you don't have to pay more than a couple bucks a pound.

Okay, here's my story.
My Mom's middle name was Violet.   She died in Spring of 2003.  This year, guess what tiny little flowers are growing next to her headstone, not planted by me.  I looked around to see if there were any nearby, and there was one violet a little ways away, but not 3 or 4 like they were clustered right next to her headstone.   I know, the birds are responsible for it, but I really like to think she had something to do with it.
My MQ story

I was hired by MQ in April for clinic work.  The clinic account was huge and always behind when I first started.  There were constant emails begging for people to work extra and on weekends.  Slowly, it started running out of work and they started slowly adding more and more accounts to my pool until I think I was up to around 20 (yes, 20).  Most of this work was ER notes.  I complained several times.  The ER notes were done by some of the worst dictators I've ever heard -- mostly American's, but sounding like they were eating while competing in the world's fastest talker competition.  I complained -- several times -- about no work, multiple accounts and the quality of dictators.  Finally, I received an insulting email from my supervisor telling me that I should be able to do this work.  I promptly replied that I could "do" this work, but that they did not pay me enough for the headache and resigned on the spot.  They really complained about everyone sending things to QA and QC, but with most of the accounts I was on, every report went to one or the other.  I'm not used to turning in reports filled with blanks and I and was not comfortable with the quality of work I was producing.  I'm certainly not the best Transcriptionist in the world, but I'm not the worst either and I actually care about what my work looks like.  With MQ I was lucky to make 100 lines an hour.  With my current job where I have been almost 2 years I make about 200-250 lines an hour and I also have gotten another part time job working for a local person where I make about 250-300 lines an hour.

I already had a full time transcription job with a smaller company I love and only went with MQ part time for tax purposes.  My experience was not a good one.  I personally would not work there again nor recommend employment there.  On a side note, an MT I used to work for locally went to MQ, she lasted a little over a year.  She referred someone who started 2 weeks before me and she lasted a little over 2 months.  These MTs left for basically the same reasons.  I can say that experiences will vary depending on what office you are at as will pay.  An MT I know was hired by a PA office at 7.5 cents a line for acute care (15 years acute care experience).  I was hired by the Dallas office at 9.25 a line for clinic (8 years clinic experience).  My base was actually 8.25.  I had to produce 6,000 lines in a pay period with 1600 of these lines done on the weekend to get the extra penny a line.

It's the same old story...
You can lead a horse to water.... There's planned parenthood, free clinics, and 3 dozen forms of birth control.  In a time of more ways to prevent unwanted pregnancy than ever, we have rampant unplanned pregnancies.  It boils down to taking responsibility, and you can only do so much.  There's a whole lot of partying and "hookin up" going on out there, and when that happens, the birth control goes out the window.
SO WHAT IS THE STORY???
Is it better for us SE people or worse?

My story!
Hello I wanted to tell you my story so you know it is not just you. I was thriving at the local hospital I had worked at for over 2 years having working my way into transcription and coding successfully. Then there was a boss that did not like me. I was finally at full time transcription and zooming along at it. The doctors were pleased, the administration was pleased, etc. The jobs were finally staying caught up. Well this woman was very very rude! A lot to tell but the basis was she told me that if I ever planned to work at home I would never make it because my 80-120 radiology jobs a day would not cut it (these were x-rays, CTs, MRIs, mammograms, CT-guidance, needle aspirations). I knew better but she still hurt my feelings by saying that. Nobody else except the combination of myself and two other girls, one old timer and one very new had ever been able to keep things caught up before and after I left either one. I got a work at home job and left there asap. Finally got my first radiology job after having worked at one national for 4 months and one a year. The second had a radiology opening and I am thriving like mad. I would love to find her and let her know a few things. Anyways, the moral is do not give up if you feel you can do it. Every company and every account is different. The first national company, account, and superviser were not for me and I strugged big time. This second company has been pretty good. My acute care was fine I just always loved radiology and am better at it. Some hate it. Keep going until you find your fit and I wish you the best of luck!! Don't let one person and/or company get you down. Keen on keeping on!!
Here's my story.
I worked in a doctor's office for many years and loved it. I would still be there except I now work at home which is better for me because I have children. There are some advertisements for Transcriptionist but like you said, not a lot. It may not hurt to start calling different offices. They have such a hard time finding transcriptionist, they may just be "making do". You could call and say you were interested in filling in when their regular transcriptionist was on vacation. That would get your foot in the door. I got my job the regular old way, I answered an ad. Good luck!
The story was (sm)

Letterman went on and on about wanting to be on Oprah's show.  Well, Oprah never called or took his calls.  Then she was reported as saying that she doesn't watch Dave's show and doesn't know what he is doing.  So Letterman finally laid off and didn't say much more about it because she never called.

So to him it probably was the event of the decade because he has been wanting to see her for so long!

Yes, it was touching.

Let me tell you a story.......
I worked for a very small MTSO, had two great accounts, no problem. This went on for several years, right up to the day she went off, fired several people, and threatened to fire me, also. I took that as my cue to leave said MTSO. I quit.

Several days later, she "needed" certain files that I had transcribed, which had already been sent to her and to the client. I had erased them from my computer. It was then, and still is MY computer. She told me point-blank that I had "no right to erase anything from that computer". Huh?????????

I suggested she contact her attorney, as I had done.

I never heard another word.

If it is your own property (computer), no one any way, any how, any where......can tell you what to do with it. Period.

Stand your ground and leave this company if they insist upon this policy. It is simply not right and it sure as heck is not legal.
Here's another story
A friend of mine had a contract with a local group of doctors and subbed some of her work out occasionally to me and another lady. The other lady didn't have a lot of experience, but had been subbing for her for over a year when all of a sudden she told her she had too many errors in her work and was not giving her any more. The lady got so upset by this that she wrote a letter to the doctor. The doctor in turn was so upset with the MT with the contract and wanted to know why she fired her and was concerned about getting sued and was just very upset that she had not even had a discussion with her or put her on probation or something. Maybe I should contact these docs adn apologize? It's not like I'm trying to get their business, just wanting to let them know I got fired and that I'm truly sorry they were unhappy. This lady doesn't even want to talk to me either by e-mail, messenger or phone. She is taying logged off of her messenger and won't answer e-mails at all. She is just hiding and avoiding this. I am not a confrontational person and have sent a nice e-mail to her, but she will not respond. Unbelievable. Maybe her docs will respond if I send them an apology.
More to the story...
If you want to hear more to the story, there were problems with TAT in the past. The fact of the matter is that when it occurred THIS PARTICULAR TIME, I was not fired on the spot, I was allowed to continue working for another week with geting work in on time, thinking everything was okay, not hearing a word that work would be ending and then at the beginning of the day today, told via e-mail that I was not needed any longer. She probably took that time to train someone else, I'm sure. I think that is so heartless and to not even face up to me or give me the courtesy of a phone call or a warning that my job was in danger. I hope this person can sleep at night.
You know I got a different story from them about
With the owner telling me one thing and the MT supe telling me something different, on the day I was supposed to do my training I emailed and canceled and declined employment with them. There has not been a lot of positives said about them since them. I'm glad I listed to my gut!
Here is my story......sm
I have been working at home for 16 years now, since my son was born. I have dealt with the strong urge to go to work outside of the home, even went on interviews and was offered many jobs; however, in the end, I turned down all of them. Reason: I chose to be a mom first and foremost. Secondly, why should I work out of the home when I can have the best of both worlds right here at home.

Granted, everyone's situation is different. I understand that.

It was my choice to stay home. My children are in their teens now. It is most important, for me, to be home when they get home from school and know exactly what they are up to, what friends they are with, etc. to try and keep them on the straight path to success and not get caught into the "wrong" crowd, which is so easy for teens.

The whole time I have been home, 16 years now, I have not regretted it for one minute. Did I think the grass was greener on the other side - Absolutely. In reality, it is not.

It all depends on what your priorities are and what type of life you will be happy with for you and your family. Only you can answer that from within.

Best of luck to you in whatever you decide. Remember, if it does not work out, there will be other opportunities in the future for whatever it is want to do. When one door closes, another opens.

have/had the same story - here's what I did
After grieving what could have been, moved out of the bedroom for about 3 weeks and refused toh ave relations - only way to get guys' attention. Then told him his inability to share his feelings was like trying to love a cigar-store Indian - if he is not human enough to have feelings, can't love him. He actually went to a counselor on his own. I refused to go with and said until he dealt with his feelings or lack thereof, would do no good to "air out" differences.  It's working, believe it or not. The last week he was very attentive to me and working on putting names on feelings and saying them out loud.
Well I can tell you a story........
I did QA for a service. Many MTs were horrendous. No such thing as QA checks or random evaluations, EVER, for years. Then they would give them great raises or worse promote some of these poor quality MTs to QA! I would sit back and watch, with my jaw dropping. Sometimes I even overheard conversations/comments about a particularly bad MT, like *she is excellent* or *she'd be great in QA*, lol. Why, because she simply did a lot of work and had many years in? A few times I tried to get involved and add my opinion but ultimately my advice was not taken so I began to keep my mouth shut and just observe the comedy show going on. It truly floored me. That is when I realized that this industry if full of incompetence and people often get promoted simply based on years in and the amount of work they do (even if it's crap). You have to wonder if before long, nobody in management is truly qualified. In my opinion, this is not just QA...this includes supervisors, managers, and on up. So there you have it. :)
Let me tell you another story
Years ago when I was younger, going to be married, mother shopped in store having birthday celebration, fill out card guessing ? in jar for prizes. She did, gay lady saw, got phone #, called us and made our life a living hello!! Called all hrs of the day, saying "hello honey!" and we kids and mother knew right away. Came home 1 day to find my mother and guy peeking out behind our hallway- detective mother had set up sting to catch this person. It eventually died but so many phone calls, gave us a heck of a time.
