Dictating on a speakerphone: One of my biggest pet peeves!!

It simply should not be allowed. It is hard enough to understand a lot of these people, and then they sound like they're speaking from the bottom of a pit with the annoying mechanical, buzzing sound quality as they "push to talk". Not to mention all the extraneous noises on top of that -- drives me nuts!!

One of my biggest pet peeves, since most of
MT pet peeves
I can't stand it any longer. I have to vent! I have two pet peeves that are driving me crazy. Number 1 is music playing in the background during the dictation; not the overhead "elevator" music that's piped in....I'm talking a radio sitting right next to the dictator! Number 2 is the dictator carrying on a conversation with others in the room....laughing, telling jokes, discussing weekend plans, while the dictation system is running. I have to sit here and listen to the whole conversation because I don't know when he or she will decide to resume dictating. Ahhh....I feel so much better now.
pet peeves
I know exactly what you mean! Would they honestly yawn, burp, fall asleep (and who knows what else...ha!) if the patient were sitting there in front of them?!! Of course not. It's like they forget (or don't care) that there is a real live human being sitting on the other end of that dictation system. Well, at least we MTs have each other when we need to let out a little steam, eh?
Pet peeves
I feel your pain. I can't stand it when they yawn while talking, eat, and I had one yesterday that answered her walkie-talkie and had a 5 minute conversation without pausing the dictation system. It drives me nuts!!
My Pet Peeves
Spelling words the wrong way. What is the point? Better yet, spelling easy words and not the more difficult sounding, mumbled words. Talking at the speed of lightning, especially when it gets to the important part of the report. Moving around papers and radiology films...hello, I can not hear what you are saying while you are making so much noise!! Dictating while noises are in the background and not just your everyday office noise, vacuum cleaners running, etc. Doctor thought it was a good idea to talk a little louder rather than wait until someone finished vacuuming. Repeating the same phrases over and over again. Saying "uh", "ah" , etc throughout entire dictation. Constantly changing your mind about what you want to say, make up your mind already!
pet peeves
As I have stated before - the doctor who dictated to the tune of Mack the Knife - radiology - that was a killer.
I can top your pet peeves!
One of my doctors does all of the things you have all listed plus moves his bowels, grunts, groans, calls his office staff every name in the book, speaks with the phone in his lab coat pocket and with the TV in the background. When I have to leave blanks in his reports and ask him to speak louder, more clearly, in a quiet area he just says no!
pet peeves
end of shift priorities - you give your availability, work more than what you say and after 13 hours of working they ask for priorities. Then get a small (yet there) attitude when you sign off. I don't mind going the extra mile - money is good, but jeez, the priorities were dictated at 1 pm and it is 11 pm now. what was I doing all day?????
Pet Peeves
These are not very big pet peeves, but they drive me nuts.... a dictator who dictates about the patient's medical "regiment," states that the patient is "alert and orientated." As I said, very minor but annoying to me!
RE: QA is one of my pet peeves
Sometimes you just get the feeling that QA is way too busy to provide feedback, and I think that's really unfortunate. There have been times that I've blanked the very same thing in multiple reports by the same doctor and never hear from QA so that blank could be avoided in the future. It's frustrating on the MT's end, and it's gotta be frustrating on QA's end as well.
QA is one my pet peeves
I have been in this industry for quite a number of years. I have been a QA person and I am currently doing the MT side. Because I have been in this so long finding a QA who really does know more than I do and can teach me a thing or two, has become difficult. It makes me uneasy when QA doesn't correct things like this because I feel that it shows they don't know what they are doing. By not providing you with feedback, they are promoting their own job security!
Verbatim is verbatim. If you come across something that doesn't fit, flag it. If QA wants to put the dictated word in there, right or wrong, that is their business. MTs are not paid to guess, nor are we to second guess doctors and change terms when it seems right to us. We are not the physician, we do not sign off on the report to reflect that we think it is accurate or not, the doctors do.
I am less concerned that the QA person filled in an incorrect word than I am concerned that you are not receiving feedback. I am of the belief that as an MT, if don't learn something every day, you are not working hard enough, and if QA is not helping you learn these things, QA is not doing their job either.
Dictation pet peeves!
Most days, I love my job. I always strive for the best work I can do, and I hope most of other MTs here do as well. I know you can empathize with me on the following.
Medical professionals - you don't sound professional at all when you do the following while dictating:
-Constantly sniff and/or swallow snot because of a bad cold or allergies. Doctors, nurse practitioners, whatever your title may be, your transcriptionists really do not need to hear that! PLEASE take some medicine and blow your nose before you pick up the dictation device.
-Eating, or chewing gum. For an MT, hearing dictation along with chomping, chewing, swallowing, smacking lips, gulping, belching, farting, etc., is just like listening to nails on a chalkboard! We understand your time is valuable, but so is ours. Please be more considerate of the person transcribing your dictation. Get your meal break in before or after you dictate, not during.
-Using the restroom. Enough said there.
Thanks for letting me vent!
FUN THREAD......PET PEEVES....
So, I am sure we all have our pet peeves on things we WISH the doctors would not do while we are trying to type their dictation for them. I thought it would be funny if we pointed them out:) I personally can't stand when they continuously yawn while talking and just assume I was to understand what was said mid yawn, rather than repeating themselves after the yawning is complete. I have a lot more though, lol.
The biggest thing I like is---
They are FLEXIBLE. They don't call you up if you are in the bathroom to see why you aren't working. As long as you do your work, they don't bother you or restrict you to a strict schedule. That was a big turn-off for me when I talked with Spheris.
My biggest issue too. (sm)
Not only that, but I finish the part I wanted bolded, return, return, and use a shortcut for the next heading, and it changes that one to bolded. Grrrrr!
biggest complaint
would anyone else say that the biggest complaint as a Transcriptionist would be leg cramps and back pain? and what suggestions would you give to help?
Does anyone know what the 3 biggest MT companies are? nm
nm
Biggest Com;pany
Spheris may be #1 because they have a huge Indian work force now.
Biggest pitfall of being an IC
is no guarantee you will get paid. See post below about MTSO not paying.
The biggest pro for me is the TOTAL flexibility...
As long as I get the work done, I can do it when I want to without being chained to my computer.
Plus, I don't know why you think ICs net 50% less than if they work on an employee basis. I've worked as both an IC and employee and, although I don't have benefits, I make much more as an IC.
Thanks. That is encouraging. My biggest concern is
visiting family at holidays and other times. Do you bring some of your own food or just pick and choose from what is offered? Or do you go "off the lifestyle" and then make up for the damage later?
I never understood why NASCAR is the biggest
to watch cars go round and round and round and round for hours, days, weeks, months, years.......I get the gambling side of NASCAR but I don't get that it truly is (and IT TRULY IS!!!) the biggest spectator sport out there.
About $65 a month, but the biggest expense is
You have to purchase the equipment and pay for installation. The dish weighs about 75 lbs so if you don't want that weight on your roof, you can have it put on a pole in your yard and that's extra. Plus they charge to bury the line from the pole to your house ($3.25 a foot - I buried it myself). All total for me, including first month's service over $700. But, hey, when that's your only option, what do you do? There may be a company or something where you live that 'rents' the equipment for a small extra monthly fee - that's how we do our satellite TV so we don't pay for repairs. Satellite internet is not as fast as DSL or cable, but is still much faster than dialup. Plus, if you're an IC, it's all a tax writeoff. Hughes Net customer service stinks big-time and if you don't like them taking the monthly charge directly out of your checking account, they charge an extra $5 a month to mail you a bill. They know you have no other high-speed options and they have you over a barrel - so they stick it to you every way they can.
But these are hospital reports from one of the biggest
ones here in Atlanta. At 1 time it was no name and change to the patient and now, all 4s, when the dictator dictates their name, you put the name. I know darn good and well they supposedly go along with the HIPPA or whatever the initials are because when it first came out they were given out and we had to read. These are definitely not clinic notes.
That's one of my biggest fears -- my heart goes out to you. sm
I volunteer for a local food back through United Methodist Open Door. They do not provide money for rent or anything, but they will give you some food and a referral to other agencies that provide assistance. They do ask for proof of income, but if you are experiencing a short-term situation, they will help you. They never turn anyone away hungry. I am sure there are such things in your area as well.
I hope you find some help. I am sure it is very scary right now. I will keep yo in my prayers. Good luck to you. Hope you heal quickly.
Your biggest problem will be with OP Notes.
I would buy the newest editions of Stedman's Surgical Word Book, Stedman's Medical Equipment Word Book, and Tessier's Surgical Word Book. Those three books will be your best friends in hospital transcription.
I would also invest in Stedman's Lab and Pathology Word Book too because you'll run across a lot of lab tests you've never heard of and would probably never hear about in the clinic setting.
How does one distinguish biggest issue
I've been at this a couple of years now and still too slow. Aside from my own issuse of looking things up, getting my Expanders accumulated, etc., I am wondering how to sort out some of the technical issues.
I hear a lot of talk about platforms, but I think the one I am using is ok (what excactly should I be looking for to determine that?). Also, I noticed the computer seems fairly slow in general. I use the Internet for searches, but it seems it takes longer than it should if I put a word into the dictionary search or acronym search, and so on. (I have some books but just as slow with them and need different glasses right now so have trouble reading them.)
I am certain we need more RAM, but it also seems our connection has slowed down as well. Connecting to the server takes longer than it used to and the e-mail opens up more slowly.
On top of all that, the data screen slows me down. There is always something that causes trouble, like, if they don't say a certain thing, then delete something else and check a box ... Or, they will enter a doc's name, but it needs to go in a different field, so we have to move it.
Any thoughts on these things and tips on how to work around it the best I can? Thanks a bunch!!
My biggest problem is the babysitting requests...
This is my biggest problem.. Every mother within a 20-mile radius thinks I am their emergency backup babysitter. I lost a friend over this. She asked me to babysit, I said no, she showed up at my door anyway and begged me to take her kid, and I refused. She hasn't spoken to me since. Several other mothers have expected the same thing, some that I don't even really know, and I have had to be very firm and stand my ground.
The biggest mistake parents are making...
is the use of Pull-Ups. Ever since they came out with absorbent (and now humungous sized) disposable diapers and Pull-Ups, kids are training later and later. What discomfort do they have to endure wearing these wonderful dry feeling comfortable garments? No more Pull-Ups and no more diapers. Tell him that the law is that they won't sell diapers to people who don't have children under the age of 3. That takes care of the visual of diapers in the store.
Just go cold turkey. Put him in underwear (and not thick absorbent training pants either) and get ready to do a lot of laundry for a while. Take him out for some really cute underwear with the character of his choice on them, and just be positive. If he has an accident just say "uh oh, you forgot to go to the bathroom" and just hand him clean dry clothing to change into. He'll get REAL TIRED of all the changing after about 2 days. There is no way on earth that a child of 3-1/2 has no physical control over their toileting, unless there's something wrong with them physically. So it's just a matter of him taking the initiative. Good luck.
EMR - Just found out today that one of my biggest accounts has gone to EMR. SM
They have started using an EMR system this week and are phasing out of my service. This is a big chunk of my work. Guess this is a sign of what is coming. Wonder if it is just a matter of time before the rest of the accounts follow suit!!!
Too bad!!
one of my biggest fears...will pray for you sister!
;)
WOOOW. You are the biggest idiot i have ever heard...GET A LIFE!

Trusting the other side was his biggest mistake. He should have kept himself secure.

Great post. The biggest gripe I have heard from available
Wrapping yourself in money will not keep you warm in old age. Just because a middle-aged man is bald or has a bit of a paunch, it is up to a woman to "light that fire". Go to it ladies.
One of the BIGGEST bands of the ྖs! Nothing lately, but HUGE back then. nm

My biggest fear of doing my own file or someone else I knew doing it would be to hear
the dreaded words "obese female" and "looks older than stated age!" UGH!!!!
My biggest irritant is the MT that leaves 20+ blanks in a report... SM
with the majority of the blanks being unnecessary and due to just plain laziness. They don't want to pick up a reference book or they don't own any reference books and they are too lazy to Google it.
It's almost as if I've transcribed the entire report myself!
exercise is really important; they stress that on The Biggest Loser.

If they are dictating what you do with it,
Furthermore, whose to say they won't take it back!!!!???!!!
someone dictating for him
here is one for the books - have a sub-intern dictating for attending - dictates the following - "Dr. _____ states that the patient has a history of "what did he say "quinaquina" failure.. I am not sure if that is the correct spelling."
well he would not - it is chronic renal failure. Now why is he even trying????? - thankfully at the end of the report the attending who apparently was sitting next to him by this point, corrected him when he dictated it again. I give up.
that might be why the doc is dictating sm
all this old stuff. Doc may have gotten caught and fined for not having charts up-to-date. I a hospital, docs get their hospital privileges suspended if the charts are not caught up
That's because NE has the 2 biggest complainers on this board daily! MQNE and MQMT!

The biggest overrated Idol contestant right now is Kellie Pickler.

I tried re-dictating to Dragon...
I bought the latest best version, souped it up with KnowBrainer and devoted 3 solid months to training it to my voice and building a huge vocabulary. I could still type circles around it. Editing is extremely bulky and slow. Also don't think you can have your docs dictate a page and then train Dragon to do their speech direct. First of all, they will expect you do to charge less since "the computer" is doing all your work. Second, you will be spending tons of time doing further tweaking and training to get Dragon anywhere near up to par to actually get any production out of it. All of which is not only frustrating as h---, but you don't get paid for it. Now, don't take this to mean that VR won't take over transcription. Big companies use a different platform with the Dragon engine - one in which they have spent a lot of time figuring out how to make it quick and easy to edit...oh, the end is in sight, all right...
Dictating while being tickled
I have one MD who on three occasions has dictated while being tickled! I can't help but laugh along, but it sure makes me wonder who the heck is in there tickling him!
Dictating and driving
Can you hear me now?? I have a physician who dictates while he drives, and by the way, his dictation goes in and out so unable to get really what he is saying.
Is this a child dictating?
I once had a doc say "I asked the patient to pee in a cup". I forget what I changed it to but I cannot stand the word "pee" and refused to use that. It is so vulgar (of course got the approval from my supe first on the change).
Child dictating
Both my Ped doctors say poop and pee. Is this going to be the industry norm? Maybe we won't have rhinorrhea any more, just snotty noses, and a few owies, ouchies, and boo boo's. lol
