HOUSEHOLD INCOME DOWN, POVERTY UP:
MORE THAN 1 MILLION FELL OF MIDDLE CLASS IN 2004
Before President Bush took office, under Democratic leadership, income was on the rise, jobs were expanding, and the economy was booming. Today, the Census Bureau announced that real household income has decreased in 2004, falling for the fourth consecutive year. Since the beginning of the Bush Administration, household income has declined nearly $1,700. Over 1.1 million people fell out of the middle class into poverty in 2004, an increase of 5.4 million people living in poverty since Bush took office. Despite this, Republicans still have no plan to help struggling middle class families. Democrats are fighting to create jobs and keep good paying jobs here at home.
HOUSEHOLD INCOME DROPPED SINCE BUSH TOOK OFFICE
Household Income Declined by Nearly $1,700 Under Bush. For the second consecutive year, median household income declined: income dropped last year by $93 -- down to $44,389. In real terms, median household income has declined by $1,669 since 2000. [U.S. Census Bureau, 8/30/05; Table A-1]
African Americans And Latino Household Incomes Have Declined by More Than $2,000 Under Bush. Real median household income did not increase between 2003 and 2004 for African Americans and Latinos. African American households had the lowest median income, at $30,134--down by $2,273 since Bush took office. Median income for Hispanic households was $34,241 in 2004--down by $2,141 since Bush took office. [U.S. Census Bureau, 8/30/05; Table A-1]
Average Earnings by Women Declined by About $330 in Real Dollars During the Past Year. The median earnings of women declined over the past year, from $31,550 to $31,223. [U.S. Census Bureau, 8/30/05; Table A-2]
1.1 MILLION PEOPLE FELL OUT OF THE
MIDDLE CLASS AND INTO POVERTY IN 2004
Number of People Living in Poverty Increased by 1.1 Million in 2004. Approximately 1.1 million people fell out of the middle class into poverty in 2004, an increase of 5.4 million people living in poverty since Bush took office in 2001. The poverty rate has increased from 12.5 to 12.7 percent over the past year, increasing for the fourth consecutive year. [U.S. Census Bureau, 8/30/05; Table B-1]
Nearly 1 in 5 American Children Lived in Poverty During 2004. 13 million children lived in poverty in 2004, an increase of about 1.4 million since the beginning of the Bush Administration. This comes on the heels of a 730,000 increase in the number of children living in poverty in 2003. [U.S. Census Bureau, 8/30/05; Table B-2 ]
Disproportionately High Number of African Americans and Latinos Live in Poverty. Nearly 25 percent of all African Americans (9 million) lived in poverty in 2004, an increase of over 250,000 over the past two years. Nearly 22 percent (9.1 million) of Latinos lived in poverty, an increase of almost 500,000 over the past two years. [U.S. Census Bureau, 8/30/05; Table 3]
1.9 Million More Americans Enrolled in Medicaid in 2004. As 1.1 million Americans dropped out of the middle class and into poverty in 2004, the enrollment rate in Medicaid increased from 12.4 percent of the population in 2003 to 12.9 percent in 2004. Without the safety net of Medicaid and SCHIP for people who dropped into poverty, the health insurance numbers would be even worse. [U.S. Census Bureau, 8/30/05, page 16 ]
NEARLY 46 MILLION AMERICANS LACK HEALTH INSURANCE: NUMBER OF UNINSURED INCREASED BY SIX MILLION SINCE 2001
Today, the Census Bureau announced that the number of people without health insurance nationwide increased to 45.8 million, the fourth consecutive annual increase. A total of 800,000 Americans became uninsured last year - many because fewer employers offer health insurance to their workers. As a consequence, American families are paying higher and higher health insurance premium - which are expected to double under Bush's tenure by 2006. Yet, Bush and Congressional Republicans lack a real plan to address the problem.
ONE IN 7 AMERICANS LACK HEALTH INSURANCE
Nearly 46 Million Americans Are Uninsured--Increasing for the Fourth Year in a Row. The number of Americans lacking health insurance increased by 800,000 last year--and by 6 million since Bush took office in 2001. Today, a total of 45.8 million people are uninsured--roughly one in seven Americans. [U.S. Census Bureau, 8/30/05; Table HI-4]

and get over yourselves - you're too obvious and too too jealous -
Patti - sounds exquisite - I live near Houseboats in the Intracoastal and have always sort of wanted the same floating type of home but instead I bought a 1500+ square foot condo on the water and is now worth close to a half mill......exlusive area of Florida! Now I have something to leave my child when I'm gone that appreciates rapidly in value (as probably yours does too). Congratulations on keeping it all after the divorce too!! WAY_2_GO_PATTI

Same as on land
That is so funny as one year I had my aunt and uncle visit from NYC -- where I was born -- and they asked if I had power and sewer system, etc. And we are the same as you are on land. They about died when they walked to the walkway, looked down and saw 53 homes on the water, it is a awsome site when you are from a large city like NYC. I have cable TV, Comcast internet, the wires are in the concrete walkways. Before they built this new moorage we had wooden walkways and our power lines, etc. were overhead and they were dangerous. But they come undergrown from the street above and through the concrete walkways. Have natural gas heat. Portland has one of the largest number of floating homes as Seattle now has a moratoreum on building anymore. So our prices are rising finally. We are safer than normal homes near a river during a flood as we only go up, up up as we are hooked onto pilings on three sides of our houses. So we float upwards. Thanks for asking.

IT COULD LAND IN COURT SM
Sorry for the shouting, I also did legal and one of my reports from a service with my initials on it was evidence and they questioned the doc on the stand. They say the report belongs to the doc but who knows when this will change. Thank goodness I had nothing to do with it, but they did ask him where it was typed, by whom, the time and date. Some docs do doctor the date to cover their kiesta and that's a hard decision to make. If the case were serious enough, I would question it or send it back with a note and document that note and make a copy. Sorry to be so serious but I've been in this a long time and I've hear it all. Lots of CYA stuff goes on (cover your -ss)
If you are using a land line you don't really have
unlimited long distance, they cap it at 5000 minutes, which isn't enough if you work FT. You could get a prepaid card - I think at Sam's club they are about 3 cents minute. You can also use a company like (can't remember name, but has 10-10 in it) that is less than that. There may be other similar companies too.
Someone is in la-la land and guess who?
The OP. PA registration called and they said no breast or gyn exams on license. I bet they were about as amused as I was asking the question but I like to hear for myself.

I have one doc who always says that before her dictations. It always makes me chuckle...then I wonder...where exactly is Dictation Land? LOL
don't remember land of the giants, but

Is C-phone for land-line only?
Won't pretend I understand VOIP but I know its available with my broadband.
You are trying to land this digital account with
You should require they purchase their own recorders. That is only fair, but that is just my opinion. Let them know you need some help with the purchase of the recorders.
Land an account using your web site? sm
I'm setting up a web site to hopefully obtain clients. My question is if I get an account what can I do to be sure they pay me and I not get stiffed for doing work?
Was thinking about using BuyerZone or some other type of site to acquire payment from the client. If you have any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.
Wait to land the accounts first
Hi!
I say wait to land the accounts first before you think about what equipment to get. You basically want to use what your client is using, not make the client switch around to your set-up. Maybe others will say differently. But I figure you save $ that way by not getting unnecessary stuff.
Good luck!
BTW, I was just reading that self-employed folks really need to increase their fees once a year just to keep up with inflation. I think a lot of times MTs who are ICs for services forget that the service is their client, not their boss. ICs need to negotiate for the right line rate because remember, you are paying for a lot out of your own pocket now.
Diane
If you use dial-up then yes you need a land line - sm
But you don't have to have long distance at all. I have 2 lines in our house, one is the main line with unlimited LD through Verizon, my other line (also Verizon) is just a connection at about $30 a month, no long distance on that line. I have AT&T as my internet provider, though may change my package now as I have one of those 875U aircards (also with AT&T, but could have used Sprint or Verizon if I wanted to) and not sure if when I connect with that it has any bearing on my unlimited package with my dial-up, so I might as well save some money and scale back on that charge. We have no package deals. I have a TracFone, my DH has a company cell phone that they pay for/handle. Your situation sounds a bit screwy; I'd investigate getting either a better deal or seperating everything and see if that works better.
I need a land line and I need it now-suggetions?
I moved and I can't get a land line for (perhaps) another week. I've already lost a week's income because of the promblem (THANK YOU, CHARTER!!). I need a quick fix. I am open to any and all suggestions to getting set up on Friday with a land line or VoIP, even if it is with Vonage for a week until I get my land line phone to work with my DAC phone. I just moved into this apartment on Monday, but I let Charter know on 1/4 that the previous tenant had turned in her keys, but until she pays the outstanding balance -- heck, she probably hasn't even gotten her final bill yet!!!), they put a "freeze" on phone service. I got that unfrozen yesterday by going into their main local office with my lease agreement, but I have already lost a weeks' pay because of this and I need a quick fix. They installed my ISP and TV today. I REALLY need to work this weekend.
I am probably in real jeopordy of losing my job.
On top of this, when my son and his roommate came over last weekend to help me pack, they told me they had both lost their jobs to a family of Indians who had come in and bought out their store's owner. By our State's examination, only one passed the English literacy exam so she is the only only who can answer the phone. Since the 4 Indian brothers need the managers' positions and they bought 4 stores, 4 managers (my son any his roommate and 2 others) are out of jobs and another 25 or so have left because of the new managers' incompetence.
Please offer help in getting a land line so I can work. I am feeling so overwhelmed and it is hard to think with this kind of pressure. I'm thinking of installing Vonage's VoIP for a week until Charter can get their act together and I get their service. It's hard to reach other services like ATT when I don't have a phone to contact them. Charter changed their protocol for getting land lines last week (just my luck) and did not tell my installer/sales rep of the changes. They are telling the independent distributers it is because of having to reset 911. I call that baloney.
Can I get a cell phone? How would that connection fit together? OMG, I am so in panic mode. Please kick around some ideas so I don't have to start job hunting after 1 week after moving.
Wow, you live in LALA land
You got I'm rich from my post-wow you are delusional. We live paycheck to paycheck like most of our friends and family, and yes we have health care coverage but over the years more and more of the cost of that had been switched to us rather than my husband's employer. And I know more than 5 people in Canada and Europe who hate their national healthcare coverage. Didn't know I needed to list them all. Go back to lala land.
If it weren't for needing a land line for DSL
My cell phone is my primary phone and I have more minutes and free long distance than I can use per month. I got basic phone services and locked it from any LD calls to save money and my land line still costs $30 a month. I feel I'm wasting that money but there isn't anything I can do. I won't drop my cell phone because I have my kids on as extra lines and they wouldn't have a phone otherwise.
Wanting to land my own local account
I am currently working part time IC for two different people, I have a little less than one year transcription exp, all in family practive or GI...I have been thinking about trying to get my own account locally but not sure about some of the "in's and out's". Those of you who do this, do you have someone who covers for you when you have to leave town? I have always had someone to QA my work, so if I do my own account and have a question(blank) do you call the office and ask or do you leave it blank? I am kinda back and forth w/ the idea, I know I would make more money, but not sure if I want ALL the responsibility.
No land line even? How far away from civilization will you be? Hospital?

7 years clinic experience and cannot land a job
Any suggestions?? I have 7 years clinic experience and am looking for work. Seems like I cannot get a response back to test or interview. I need a company that offers TAT, not set hours. I send in resumes and cover letters daily...What else could I do???
Also, in the meantime does anyone have suggestions on "practice files". I want to expand my skills/specialties. I have not done radiology and have always wanted to get into it...Thanks for any advice!
Yeah, what land are they living in? Copy the page indicated - sm
and fax it to them. Also ask then where in the book does it say "non Hodgkin lymphoma". Too weird.
Internet service without land-line phone
I recently looked into this subject myself. If you have Verizon available in your area, you can purchase a plan at about $55.00 per month with a two-year contract. You will receive a card that you can insert into your laptop, which will provide you with unlimited Internet access at the speed of DSL. As far as I know, there are no other cell service providers that have come up with this type of card yet, but I'm sure it's bound to happen in the future. Another option is to purchase a satellite telephone and phone cards as you go along, but the cards are really outrageous in price. One last thing that I would suggest is that you phone cell providers in your area to see if they have any technical gadgets you could attach to the cell phone for Internet access. Many of the satellite phone companies have separate packages you can buy, which can be attached to laptops or PDAs. I also have a TracPhone, so I know it does not come with hardware that will do the trick.
Good luck to you in setting everything up. With the way that technology is moving, I'm sure there must be a way to accomplish what you want.
If you have a cell phone, why not use that for your LD calls and CX the LD on the land line?
.
My aunt has extremely low rate for land, no frills but
I was told according to where you live- mine no frills over $30.00 a month but now say I can have a land phone, will not work, but still pay for it? Erks me.
if you live among trashy people, low income people, people w/o goals or direction,
content to just get by, you by default become a part of a group. "people" have decided to group trailer people as trash. that is because there are enough people in that group to earn the title and even if you aren't trash, you are categorized by others. did i think i was trash in lower class neighborhood surrounded by people who drank and fought all weekend? no but i knew i wasn't staying and did not try to pretend that all the fools in the neighborhood were just nice folks who ended up where they were because high horse snobs deemed their neighborhood low class. people for the most part live exactly where they belong because they don't want to educate themselves, they don't mind "trash" around them and they don't want to be bothered trying just a bit hard to extract themselves from that world. they justify everything to themselves i guess saying everyone who doesn't like their lifestyle is a snob and the comedians (Jeff Foxworthy/Chris Rock, etc) who make fun of them are just ill-informed.
As for me, I fought hard to get out and don't even want to look back. It amazes me people stay for generations.
Company states cannot use Vonage. Any suggestions for land line unlimited long distance? nm
so many people was wishy-washy nowadays...love to see people make
a stand for what they believe in...
it is kind of wierd those statements have to be made in the first place but guess we are an ever-transitioning country and are still young. so many different beliefs yet not much tolerance.
I found your post respectful, and right on as to how you feel. it does not seem that difficult to sift through to read and respond to messages someone might not care for...
Just remember that it is not the people on this board who short changed their people and ONLY after
caught did they (after they were suied) make an effort to look good by sending out these checks. Now, think about this--had they done this many years ago when they short changed everyone, that would have been honest. Does it not bother you that only after they know they are under the gun that they are doing this to try and make themselves look good?
I used to work for MQ and I used to like what I did. I never can say I really liked the people that I worked with, but I really think they had some of the best accounts that I have ever come across in the MT industry. I loved working the major teaching hospitals that I did, but that certainly does not mean that I enjoyed being cheated out of pay.
So chill already. People have been cheated, were lied to, and only AFTER they got caught have they tried to return some of the money they robbed us of (as well as cheated their clients).
We all have reasons not to be happy with this company and you go off on us because we are complaining of things like small refund checks of a penny or a few cents or a few hundred dollars and NO WAY to even check to find out if this is correct?
I am sorry you are unhappy all of us thinking that there is still a dead rat in the cellar, but there is still a dead rat in the cellar and nothing will bring the dead rat back.
I would hold no love for a company that I know willingly cheated the very people who helped THEM make money out of their hard-earned money.
Go take a deep breath and think about that.
My people skills are just fine. I just want to hire people who want to work.
I've not been ugly, I've asked questions, legitimate ones. Please tell me what is wrong with that. This site is not just for MTs, it is for QA Editors, Supervisors, Service Owners, there's even sections for Billers, Coders, and Nurses.
rude people? I would take good pay over polite people any day
Besides that they have never been rude to me and I have been here for almost 2 years. What do you consider a bad account?
I know my account is a little tough, but I am used to it. I am tough!
Rude people? I hardly think so. They are some of the nicest people I have ever worked with. sm
Not just management, but QA as well. No one is rude. They are a very understanding staff. There is one account that is hard but all it takes is getting used to it. Once you are used to it, it is no harder than any other ESL account that you would do anyplace else. I have heard all these things about TH from the archives and I have yet to come across rudeness or any kind of thing that I have read about in the archives. I would definitely pursue them if I were you. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
2 people to do that amount of work, is she nuts? More like 20+ people - nm

Certain people getting raises, certain people not. Guess who is?
Say what you will about unions, the good and the bad. But, one thing they did ensure is a raise, good benefits and that you would have a job in the morning.
Yeah right, OF COURSE! How could there be other people who don't like QA people?
Could only be one. Hahaha. Dream on.
I agree, some people will never get it but, then again, what does it say about them as people? Not
.
I don't like people
nm
Just so happens there ARE some people who
CAN really produce and NOT cherrypick. GEESH.
Problems come from working with stinky attitudes like yours.
The people....
Did you ever think that what you take as politeness might just be their poor language skills?
Why don't you go over to India and live for awhile - they have half of our MT jobs so you should be able to find work (Healthscribe, Medware). Then, tell us how polite they are.
People are people - just because they live in another culture doesn't make them any better than us or any worse than us. It is the job, working with the public, that wears people down eventually. It is particularly easy to be rude over the phone.
There are people who don't know better, there are people
who need to be at home for whatever reason, a chronic illness, kids, caregiver to sick parents, etc. Any job is better than no job if you need to eat.
If there were enough decent paying jobs with honest companies no one would work for the low paying, dishonest companies. So far I have turned down jobs with MQ because of their actions, quit a job with SS because it is a lowsy company, I have turned down 2 positions with companies that offshore. Fortunately I got on with a company that paid a decent wage and one that doesn't offshore, though it isn't the great company that it used to be either, but it is a living.
try something most people have a
problem with and your worth increases .. neurology and ophthalmology for instance. Most people are afraid of the eye .. wonderful once it becomes second nature. Oncology is another sought after skill, but takes a lot of work. Also you might contact M-Tec to take their class in neuro or OAK Horizons .. they are both very good.
That people such as yourself
would quit airing your dirty laundry and asking for advise - and then get all pissy when people give their opinion. After all, that is what you were after right? This is MT Stars, this is NOT a military advice column or posting board. When you open yourself up on a public forum, then be prepared for what follows.
Personally, I think anyone who signs up to defend the country and then turns his back on his duty is HEARTLESS.
The military makes your obligations and consequences VERY clear.
Sure some people do need help..(sm)
The below is an e-mail that I got from a lady who lives in Houston. These are her observations only, but it sure does make you think about all of the self-righteous out there who really don't understand another person's hesitation in taking many of the people in to our communities. Some of them come from a whole different kind of mentality.
Well...
I feel sorry for these people - they have lost everything - they have nothing. I blame their own government at least a bit for not evacuating the ones that were too poor or had no way to evacuate.
That being said, it isn't going as well here as the media makes it out to be. Anthony has been down the to the Astrodome as required by the Fire Department, and I went down on Saturday with a friend of mine.
The Astrodome holds around 50,000 people - and there aren't that many evacuees down there. There are bathroom facilities, but these people are squatting on the streets, parking lots, and lawns of places down around the astrodome and leaving behind urine and fecal matter. They are throwing trash wherever they are when they finish with it, and quite a few act like we "owe" them something. I can't tell you how many people were bitching about the MRE's that they were being served.
As high as gas prices are, I will go out of my way not to have to drive by the Astrodome (my RE's office is about 1 mile from the dome). When you stop at a stop light they come up to your car and beg - and knock on the windows. There have even been reports of some jumping in the backs of pickups and even scratching cars and trucks with knives, if you don't give them money.
I know that there are some good people out there, but there are a lot of bad ones too. There are some that were appreciative of the baby formula (breastfeeders - please don't jump on me here) and diapers and coloring books that we were handing out - and some that were bitching about the brand of diapers, the fact that we were only authorized to give out one can of formula per child and that we didn't have a certain kind of bottles. I even had people that refused to take gift cards from Grocery Stores - wanting money instead.
Last night, one of the evacuees was able to score some alcohol somewhere, got drunk and carjacked a car and ran into several parked cars - the police were able to pull him over after a 15 minute chase.
And I can't get over the smell of raw sewage in the area of town that most of the evacuees are housed. The plumbing in the toilets are working just fine - but they aren't using it. They are trashing the place.
I can't imagine what it must be like for them, having nothing but the clothes on their backs - but I think I would be more appreciative of whatever someone could do for me, instead of griping about what kind of bottles they were giving me to feed my kids with, and that the MRE's were cold.
I really have mixed emotions about the whole thing. I feel sorry for the people who couldn't leave, and got stuck in the chaos. I don't have as much sympathy for the ones who could have left, but didn't want to.
I am sure I sound like a cold, callous, b****, but I was absolutely amazed at the attitude of most of the evacuees that I was in contact with on Saturday.
Some people believe anything
Evacuees are NOT trashing the Astrodome! You people choose to believe anything. There are enough cameras around the Dome to show how residents are reacting. Security is very tight and strict there right now! As far as "sorry people" that were evacuated, you do NOT know their situation NOR their minds and hearts. My brother was one of the evacuees. He was a student at the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He lived in Orleans parish just blocks from Ward 9. Most of Ward 9 are very poor people, handicapped and disabled, and yes there are some drug addicts and lawbreakers there. But I bet if you would look in your own neighborhood you would find them there yourself! Some people, if you could crawl out of your own self-righteous world, do not choose to be in the financial shape they are in. Let's see here, I live in NE Mississippi and people's financial status in this community is very poor. Why? Is it because we have women having babies at 15 and no daddies and no desire to better theirselves? NO! It's because our lovely government signed NAFTA and allowed all our manufacturing jobs to be taken away. So what happens to the people? They fall in the cracks!
Back to New Orleans. Let me tell you all about the wanting certain things to be donated. A evacuee does not EVEN get to choose what they want. How assinine of you! Do you think they just sit on the streets and wait for handouts? NO! They have to get passes to even leave the Astrodome or any other shelter. It is the Red Cross that is not taking clothing donations and asking for particular donations. My brother went to the Red Cross to get assistance and was told unless they were living in a shelter, they could not help them at this time. Where is the justice in that? We took clothing to the shelter here in MS and was told to take it back home because they didn't have the time to sort through it. They said that was the job of the Salvation Army. ALSO, our area churches wanted to adopt families and take care of them. Out of 300 families, 50 were given homes to stay in. Last Thursday, we were told by the Red Cross unless we could take them all, we could have none! It had to be the evacuee to approach us and ask, they would not allow us to come in and get families because they said it would only stir up strife. The Red Cross needs some serious reorganization! They have infuriated me!!!
So before you get on your high and pious throne discrediting ANYONE, why don't you come on down here in our area and just try living in the situations that are going on right now. Life is very difficult for most of those people. They have lost all of their livelihood and have no hope for the moment. It's only when loving, kind people with caliber that you do not seem to possess, try to help those that are less fortunate!
