DSL - distance from office or switch.

My hubby is retired from the phone company. DSL services don't have anything to do with distance from the office/switch. Each community has a "box," usually green, on the side of the road, normally at an intersection, where phone services for that area are handled. If the equipment in the box is not fiberoptic compatible or old technology, you can't get DSL in the area served by that box. Once enough people ask for DSL so that it is "cost effective" in that area, you get new equipment installed and that area gets DSL.

Have most people had good luck with their MQ office closing and moving to the regional office. Have
things gotten better or worse for you.
Yes, I lost mine. I upgraded the Office 2000 package to Office 2003. sm
I have over 2000 autocorrect entries and lost them all as well as my supplemental dictionary for my Stedman's spellcheck. Lots of grief!
Maybe you will be lucky and not lose anything. Good luck to you.
Might be able to rent one from an office supply or office machine repair shop

Office politics. That is why I enjoy working at home. In the office,
people are in other people business. Just mind your own business.
Can anyone suggest an office in MQ that is not run like this Amherst office. They are absolutely
pathetic. I wonder how many other MTs are in that office in the same situation.
Just DQS from my office was transferred and the rest are getting on DQS before the office closes.

Distance is a big plus
Hi,
You have a lot of advice here, but I'll add my 2 cents. When I left, I found that distance played a very big role. Make that the LAST time I left.
I scrounged, scraped and borrowed just enough to get away. My family had property 450 miles away and that is where I headed with my 2-year-old son. The distance kept me from running back during weak moments and kept him from getting to me immediately during a mad spell and becasue of the time and money issue to make the trip, he didn't bother.
My point being, the distance really helped in my situation. If it is at all possible to get close to your family and friends, then the distance will help, and the support of those who love you being close will be a big help.
Get whatever assistance is available and file for custody right away. Because my ex didn't even show up to fight, I didn't need a lawyer or anything for that part. I just went to court myself. There were juvenile advocates there that helped me.
Once you are gone for and get through the first bit, you will wonder why you didn't do it long ago. You and your kids will be better off - believe that with all of your heart.
Good luck and God Bless!

Does anyone know of a good unlimited minutes long distance company?
SBC long distance
is intended for personal conversations. I believe if they find out it is for digital (computer) use they will try to back-bill you for the full charge from when you started using it. This hasn't happened to me personally, I heard this from someone. Just a heads-up.

My long distance is through my cable company, runs through the existing phone lines. It is unlimited, nationwide, and I haven't had any problems with it at all. If your cable company doesn't offer this, you can get Vonage or a similar VOiP (Voice over IP) program. They're inexpensive. The only thing I don't like about Vonage is that it involves hooking up a router to your cable modem, and you can only plug your phones into that router. Good luck!

I started last year with a very well known phone company and after 2 months they sent me a letter saying I was using it for computer and wanted to raise my rate $30 a month. Needless to say, i switched to another company.

I use MCI and love it! It's about $70 a month.
She could even be on drugs. Keep distance.
She might think you are where she would like to be and wants to impress you in her little mind and little world.
HELP with long distance!!!
Anyone else with this problem? Was with MCI. Had 13,000 minutes for month. Said it was a fax line. NOT!!! Said it was internet. NOT!!!!. I am in North Carolina calling Illinois for my work. AT&T says anything over 5000 minutes is excessive and will not get service for business line. Any ideas? Desperate.

Try ACC Business, a division of AT&T. I have a resume business and have used them for over 10 years. It's less than 3 cents a minute. Check it out!

Verizon and it is about 49.00 a month unlimited without voice mail, call waiting, and caller ID.
long distance
I use MCI. It is not the cheapest, but it is reliable, and it is $77.00 per month. As far as I am concerned anyone ! beats AT&T!
LONG DISTANCE
You may want to check out SunRocket for $25/month you get unlimited long distance. You do need high speed internet though.
Do you use 800 # or long distance? nm

long distance
I don't know if they are the least expensive, but i have MCI and love it. Total bill is $75 a monh, and every 12th month you get free.
long distance
Have you considered Vonage. Depending on your internet speed (cable or DSL) and depending on the equipment that you have to use, from what I understand this can be used with just about any equipment. Check it out.
Long Distance
We use QWest and pay $20 + fees, tax, etc. I guess from what you all said that is good!

Does anyone use Qwest for long distance service? Thanks!

I use Verizon unlimited long distance.

I just found about a phone service, Quest, for flat rate of $25.00 per month - no questions asked about business, etc. Good luck!
LONG DISTANCE
I use AT&T. Get a business account (does not cost more and if you have problems with your phone lines they fix it right away, no waiting.) The price is terrific (I pay for two lines unlimited long distance) and it is around 100.00 a month for both, no long distances charges and great service. I have thought about Vonage or Charter, which would save me some money. If it is available in your area you should check it out. You can keep your old phone numbers too. I think I will stay with AT&T for a while longer until the reliability of Vonage and Charter along with the quality of sound is a sure thing.
I would think that you would not have long distance - sm
like you say unless you call your clients a lot, and even so you should be able to get away with an unlimited plan. Do you have them call in on an 800 number service and that is what is costing you? If that is the case maybe get them set up on handheld digital recorders and have them send the work through a FTP, would be a lot cheaper. As for your equipment, I'd think it would be paid for by now, and of course you can write off all your expenses so that at least saves you tax dollars. Paying your people less should be your last option. It is hard to believe your overhead is so high every month, with .10 a line to fool with, unless these 44 clients do not really produce much in terms of work, if each only does 5000 lines a month, at .10 a line left over that is $22,000 (your cut for yourself and overhead), and you cannot pay your overhead with that? Even if they only do half that, 11K a month is a lot of scratch to pay your LD, attorney, equipment (again do you buy new stuff every month?). There is definitely something wrong with this picture, you need to examine your costs closely and figure out where every penny is going, and start shopping for a new LD carrier, or whatever to get your costs down. If you do pay cuts be prepared for people to leave in droves.
You can use AT&T for long distance
you just have to change over to a business phone from residential. I have to do that myself as I going to be changing places I work for and will need unlimited long distance. It is not too much more than what I pay now.
Long distance. sm
I had the same problem with Verizon. I have used this service since the 90s' and am very satisfied.

Distance from keyboard
Lately I can't seem to get comfortable with my distance from the keyboard or where my chair is. Any good general rules on this? I don't seem to like my chair centered (not sure why) and had marked the spot where I like it with tape (marked the specific leg and the spot I like the wheel), but lately it doesn't feel right.
I noticed, too, that I have been pulling my keyboard closer and closer to the point some movements are hard to do. When I become aware of it, it does feel weird, but then when I push it back, that doesn't feel right either.
Good grief! - (Not sure what this little guy is doing, but I think I can relate. Lol)
Distance does matter....sm
Your husband is incorrect.
Whether it's DSL, ISDN, T1 or any other signal requiring higher speed than analog lines can support "natively", distance is an enormous factor in provisioning these services.
18,000 feet is about the maximum disance that a DSL signal will be provisioned for, and assumes certain characteristics prevail for the line. However, at that or some lesser distance, it is possible, as with any signal, to repeat or retransmit the signal along another segment. (It could also be picked up on a microwave segment and transmitted, for that matter).
Unfortunately, telcos will not "build out" their DSL facilities from the central office unless there are sufficient potential subscribers to justify the cost. This is not a problem in town and the equipment needed to extend the signal to segments beyond the maximum distances will be installed.
However, such is not true in rural areas. (Look at any DSL coverage map.) This is why the problem of DSL provisioning to rural America have been called "the last mile" problem.
Line quality is also a factor, so that you can live across the street from a central office and not be able to get DSL because your analog (regular) phone line for some reason won't support the signal.

How about as a combo plan through a cable television company? The cable companies around me offer something called a "triple-play" that includes cable TV, internet, and long-distance calling for $99/month or something like that.

Thanks for answering my post. I do have a cable/TV/phone co but they prohibit use of the phone for other than direct voice. I tried one of those Magic Jacks but it didn't work. Now I am waiting on a Voip device in the hopes that it will give me what I need.
Has anyone had to switch from MT...
because of problems with carpal tunnel or other wrist issues? I have been offered a job out of the house doing something other than MT. I would not even be considering the position other than I have started having a lot of problems with my wrists even though I have the ergo keyboard, wrist supports, etc. Has anyone else considered or left MT because of this?
You only need the KVM switch if
you only got the CPU and it is expected that you will use your own keyboard, monitor, mouse.
KVM switches have nothing to do with internet connections.
Are you going to have to switch to VR soon? sm
I was under the impression that it was not an option to just do straight transcription. Thanks.
KMV switch?
I have not heard of that. What is it used for?
KVM switch
I used to use a KVM switch. I never had any trouble connecting to the internet. I found it very easy to set up and use. Good luck with it!!
Do you mean Alt Tab to switch to another app? nm

You Have a KVM Switch??
Sometimes the monitor gets "caught" when you have a KVM switch and go from one computer to another.
If you do not have a KVM switch, try updating your drivers or reinstalling them. Also, it's good to make sure your BIOS is up to date (you can get updates from your manufacturer's website).

KVM switch help - sm please
I know I can switch back and forth from my laptop to my main tower via a KVM switch as I heard about it a few years back on this board. Could anyone write below or e-mail me as to how I can set it up and how it works for you? Where did you get yours and how simple it is to use. I would like to stay in the middle of my report and research a subject without leaving the screen I am working on, i.e., one screen, one keyboard, two computers. Thanks for any info,, I really appreciate it.
Did my doc switch to you?
One of my regulars insists on dictating punctuation (which he does not use, by the way) and I have to constantly go back and take out things that I automatically put in (because it makes sense). And he also spells things for me, which usually are close, but wrong. He tells me things like "Feb. 2, 2008, no, just say of this year" and other things that make me want to get on a plane and go find him and smack him! And he's an eater and a (huge) sniffler. And he complains about me and sends my reports back if I do anything different than exactly what he dictates.
Okay, I feel better. Do you? I didn't know "external hemorrhoids" were so common!
Buy a little switch box.
It is very easy to set up. I think it is called a KVM switch and is inexpensive. I have one that I have used several different times. The only problem I had was that the mouse connection on mine would not let me plug in the mouse, so I had to use separate ones. For the monitor it worked perfectly.
