why on 1 computer for the same report would the word count be different in Word? (inside)
Like on 1 computer with word the document was 27000 character counts w/spaces
and the other computer (the one i type this account on says 13,000. How can there be such a difference with Word being the same? I am baffled.
I would do a print screen on every report to verify that the line count is correct. nm
Word line count
The company I IC for told me to use the word count in the Word, divide the characters with spaces by 65 to get my line count. Are you guys saying that this is not accurate? The owner is a very honest person, so if this is not accurate, I'm sure she does not know it. I think this is how she bills her clients as well.
line count in word
Use the characters with spaces count and divide by 65.
I use both DQS & Word and avg about the same line count.
Two separate part time accounts. I really don't see much difference.

Microsoft word line count - what is the name of it and where can I buy it. Also,on a dictaphone, how can i tell how many minutes of dictation i have left.

Line Count in Word
I am an IC and will be starting with a new client this week. Can someone tell me how to get an accurate line count in Word? I know that have a word/line count in Tools, but I have found that it is not accurate (it usually gives you more lines than you actually typed). I don't want to cheat anyone, so I am hoping someone can tell me how to get an accurate line count. Thanks in advance for your help. Trish

Depends if you are counting gross or cpl. The gross does count the blank lines but it is an accurate line count. You can even put on the numbers to show you that it is. You can do this under file and page set up. You can also do to sections only. But you can also take characters with spaces and divide by 65 or whatever character line you are charging. Other than that you can buy a program that works. When I used a program I liked Sylcount as you could set it up to count twice for a capital letter, bold, underline, etc. And you are using two characters to do that. But it takes a while to get used to and time is money, so I told my docs I was sticking with gross lines, lower rate and easier and less time to count and so we all agreed. They are happy, I am happy.

Thanks very much. Very helpful. I love this board -- I get so many answers to questions I have! Thanks again.
Word line count
I check my Word line count against my employer's every few days or so. While you're in Word go up to Tools, Word Count. My pay is supposedly 65 cpl with spaces too, so I divide the word count that says with spaces by 65. I just did a report with 12,722 characters wtih spaces by my count. I just checked their count by dividing that number by 65 and my count was 195.72. On their counting it is 196.
In Word you take the line count with spaces SM
and divide it by 65. That will give you your line count. So, if my report had 11,700 characters with spaces, that would equal 180 lines. Multiple 180 lines x. 0.11 (your cost per line) and that would equal $19.80 for that particular report.
Good luck!

Thanks for your help! I'm in Ohio about 1 hour from pittsburgh. they're are a lot of docs here though. does it sound good to try and negotiate and start at a higher rate and then drop down a bit? Also does using your line count in word work pretty good for you. Do you not find the need to get a separate counter? Thanks so much for your help!
Word does have Line Count under Tools.
not have an add on. I use MS Word 2003 and it has a line count on the tool bar. Are you sure you know what you mean when you say there is no line counter in Tools in MS Word?
Line count verification in MS Word.
I get paid on a 65-character line with spaces, no headers/footers. When I highlight the text I type (nothing else), and then check under Tools, Word Count, characters with spaces, and then divide by 65, I'm still coming up about 6-8% higher than my company's line count. Am I doing something wrong?
Does Word 2003 do cumulative line counting or does it go back to 0 with each report. nm

You need to watch your line count. I was working for them and got reports that had line count of 0 in them. They did not pay for templates, they would deduct the template even if it was not used and deleted. I notified them and said they could not change it.
So I asked to be put on another account and they refused. I quit.
I was also promised they would have an incentive plan going into place if you type a certain # of lines. Two years went by and nothing.
I was really disappointed in OSI.
They also offered to pay half on joint AAMT, which they failed to do.
I am glad I am no longer there.
We can't cut and paste from word
into that platform, they say it messes up the format in the original reports....so I don't do that, but I do copy the note from the Emdat platform into a word document to make sure I haven't missed anything because my Word program has a better spellchecker.
I did not know that you could use Shorthand in there...I really don't know what that is...I had Stedman's word Expander program (can't recall the name right now), but my company said it won't work in the Emdat program.....is it call shorthand...do you have the link? I would appreciate any information.
Thanks!
I too use Meditch and cut and paste from Word...sm
You can set up Meditch to use a Word interface, which is what i do, and then i cut and paste from my verision of Word to the Meditech version of Word.
I have a remote desktop that i connect to and so i basically have 2 desktops running at the same time..."mine" and "theirs." It is quick and easy to switch back between the 2 and do a cut and paste. If you cut and paste directly into the meditech screen it is very slow and painful. I too have found that the spellchecker and also the expansion component in Meditech is totally useless. I use Speedtype and it will work in the version of Meditech that I am using.
If you want to know how to set up the Word Interface in Meditech just send me a pm and I can send you the instructions. It takes just a couple of minutes to do.

Can you cut and paste from Word to Meditech?
Can someone tell me if I can type a report in word and use the bold function, then cut and paste it into Meditech and still have the bold sections bolded (blue)? Also, will lines wrap around correctly when using the tab key.
It won't minimize so you can see Word in one and QLDB in another, and won't cut and paste. SM
There's nothing "wrong" with my CD, it's just that this edition (2007) doesn't have some of the functions of earlier versions. It's not something you would find out unless you bought it and installed it. If you don't care about those functions, go ahead and spend your money. But for just the wild card or fuzzy search function there are other places on the web, that do not charge, and where you can minimize and cut and paste.
This was discussed on a couple of other MT boards, with the same conclusion and disappointment as above.
You decide.

you can copy and paste from word to meditech...
It is alt V instead of ctrl V. It is VERY slow doing it that way though.
I'd work in Word and cut and paste into their system. SM
Ask them if you can type it in Microsoft Word and then cut and paste (copy the Word document and paste it into their system).
It is not feasible to work without a spell checker. Word has a pretty good spell and grammar checker and there is no reason to do without it.
See if their "tech" department can come up with a macro to copy the text of the Word document and paste it into their program. Or, you could create a Word macro and paste it into their system. Either way. There is an excellent Macro recording program called Macro ToolWorks which is free for 30 days and then $40.00 that can duplicate key strokes and mouse movements, and could copy the document, go to their program and paste it in. They you'd just hit one button, like the Ctrl button plus a number. Their tech department should only take one or two days to come up with some solution.
Good luck. I just would not work without Word spell checker and also Steadman Medical Spell Checker. Essentials to any production typing job. Good luck !
Take the character count divded by 65 and that will give you your line count.

As long as you are cutting and pasting inside DQS, its okay. Just don't try to paste from a Word

Ask for a sample report. Count the gross lines on a full page. Then
figure out the line rate you want to make. For example, if there are 30 lines on the page and you would want to charge $0.15 per line, then that would be $4.50 per page. If they would like your hourly rate, figure out how many pages you think you can transcribe in an hour. Using the above example, if you can transcribe 4 pages per hour, then charge $18.00 per hour. In California the going transcription rates are approximately $22-$25 per hour.
Gross line = each line on page counts as a line, even if it's only 1 word. nm

Calculating lines using Word Count in Word
I have recently started a job where lines are calculated using the Microsoft Word word count tool. I think I read that you get cheated out of lines if a company counts this way. Is this true?
In Word 2007, you can add Word count to the status bar.
Right-click the status bar and select Word count. Once it appears on the status bar, you can double-click it to bring up the statistics dialog box that shows characters. You can also find this option on the Review tab, Proofing group, Word Count.
pay by report/line
The companies pay by line or report according to the account. After evaluating the account, if the rad. reports tend to be short or use a lot of normals, they pay by the report. But the same company will pay by the line if docs on another account dictate long, wordy reports. If account is evaluated honestly, it is SUPPOSED to be beneficial to transcriptionist.
report vs line
It really does depend on the acct -have been doing rad for years and work for several different accts right now - I get 9 on one, 9.5 on another and 1.50 per report on yet another. The platforms you are typing in makes a huge difference too. So, I think it is hard to say which is better.
Radiology - per report or by line?
I'm switching from a company that pays radiology reports by the report, not line, to a company that pays radiology report by line, not report. Which is better? I've had so many looooong and foul reports, yet we get the same buck per report no matter how long it is. It would seem as tho getting paid per line is better - any thots?
line versus report sm
There is just no way of knowing until you're there. It's crazy. I used to work for a company that paid by report, but they were all MRIs and specials. Then I worked at Spheris for a few months being paid by the line and could never get my line count because #1 the platform sucked (copy and paste.. it took longer to save a report than to type it) and #2 I was getting a lot of short reports. A lot of companies pay by the line on certain accounts and by the report for others. So you just have to try it. If it's not working out for you after a month or so, it's time to look elsewhere.
Radiology pay report vs line?
Any opinions on which pays better, 9 Cents a line or $1.10 a report. I have always been paid by the hours, and unsure of which way is better. I am a fairly fast producer.
Pay per report/cpl/gross line
Feel free to email me with any questions on this subject. I have been a radiology Transcriptionist exclusively for 15 years. But I did medical records for the 15 years prior to that. radioloy is where the money is.

Line Count...
Does anyone know if the Word 2000 line counter is generally the same as what most MT companies go by? I'm trying to see how I do being paid by lines as opposed to report.
Line count. No way, no how, ever. nm
Nope!
Line Count
I have worked for SS for a few years and I DO NOT like the fact you cannot check individual line counts. I do not like having to trust someone to be in charge of my line count and I have no way of verifying it is correct. The line counts bounce all of the place. Try it yourself. I have a line count program and one day it is a couple of lines off and others over 10%. Not good and I can't believe they get away with this.
changes in DQS line count..sm
Apparently, now the ASR count is included in the "transcription" count. As of yesterday, I had to
look under "correction" to see ASR count and as of today, there is no "correction" listed. Hmmm.
line count
When they first started ASR it was under transcription, then they separated it, now put it back. Actually QC is a level higher than QA, at least that is how it has been explained to me, if QA can't fix it then it goes to QC
mq line count
Yes, I was surprised to see that suddenly happen on Sunday, I believe it was. Seems like explanations should be given to us before or at least shortly after making such a change. Maybe their lawyers suggested they do it this way? I have not yet had a pay cut for ASR.

DQS and line count
I have been frustrated with line count on DQS since I started on program well over a year ago, but have adjusted to it. It might not have been as disappointing/frustrating if they hadn't made such a big deal about how many MORE lines we would be able to do on this program....... even had "employee statements" to back it up. I have since decided they were just actors, like you see in those drug commercials, you know, "I am a doctor/nurse/medicine man", etc. ......... It DOES get better ........
MQ line count
YES - I work for a hospital that uses the DQS software from MQ. Our pay went down 40%. Nobody knew what was going on, until we discovered that they cheat their transcriptionists! QUIT THEM... I want to see them go totally under. They are horrible, horrible people!
Line count
Can anyone tell me what is good for a newbie to get for line count? I have a company that is going to pay 8-10 cents a line. Is that good? Please help!!!
line count
No its not a IC position, its a employee position, I have benefits and so on.
line count
It depends on how the company is counting the lines. Transcription companies are getting better as to what they can count and what they don't. Spaces after lines have entered can easily be taken away. As technology moves forward, so does the ability to be more accurate with counting.
