Could you please explain why you find this term so offensive?

Posted By: Animal Freak on 2007-04-22
In Reply to: Using the term wannabe is still disrespectful. Please refrain from using - it on this site. Thank you. Administrator nm

The term 'wannabe' is regularly used in society and it not considered a terrible insult. It stands for someone who 'wants to be' like someone or something else - for example someone who copies Madonna because she wants to be as controversial or as famous, etc.

True it's not generally meant as a compliment because it's applied to those are striving to be something they probably can't be, often because of lack of 'enough' talent or capabilities... but it's really not an out and out slam - and certainly not racial in any way, or gender-biased.

The original poster seems to have used the term correctly.

I Don't Find It Offensive...

I've been told a lot of times that "they can do transcription," and my response is "yeah!! you can do transcription." ... I simply tell them take transcription class, work in hospitals or companies that hire newbies, when you have enough experience (2-5yrs) then you can apply to companies that allows you to work from home.

Your neighbor doesn't mean to offend you... actually, reading between the lines, you inspire her...

curiosity sometimes is a way to become successful in this business.

Explain you took on 2 acct at same time but find it impossible to do adequate job for 2 accts.
:P
It's disgraceful and offensive. Too bad if you don't like it
when others are offended by such lack of character and integrity.

If you're an adult, learn to speak like one and leave the juvenile language in the toilet where it belongs.
I agree with you. It's very VERY offensive!
THe problem is, though, that it's okay to offend you or anyone else who is a Caucasian of European descent and push minorities and their "cultures" down our throats, and even worse those of our children. Something has to be done about it because it's ridiculous, offensive and just plain nauseating.

Your kids have a right to be proud of their heritage too, not to be made to feel guilty about it or taught that it's something to be disregarded.
not meant to be offensive
but you have to admit, statistically MT's are more likely to have big rear ends. And so do quilters. Of which I am both. LOL. Relax.
Thanks "Me" - That's why it's offensive! (sm)
I live in a southern state and the term "ebonics" is used in a derogatory way around here. There are bad dictators of every race and nationality, but we all know who the term "ebonics" refers to! I don't like bad dictators either, but I also don't like prejudice!
Eubonics is offensive.
The post that says MT is po' should be removed. That was the reason for the post.
You suggest being less offensive ... yet
you are obnoxious!!!
Offensive remark
As a Transcriptionist who also happens to have a handicap, I found your remark quite offensive "still willing to work and not live off the rest of us."  I am always WILLING to work but am not always able.  I do not choose to live off you or the government or anyone else.  However, there are programs available to handicapped people that I have qualified for.  That is because I paid my taxes for years, just like everyone else.
I think it is unique - not offensive at all nm

warning - this may be disturbing and offensive to some...and then, maybe not...
There has to be some way to convey to you what is on this video.  My hope is someone else will also step up and try to answer your questions, as I get very sick to my stomach even thinking of it.

I also do not want to offend anyone who maybe would not want to be subjected to this, you know, who might open the post not really knowing what is in it and then read it.

With a video, you open it, or not, at your own will.

Imagine the chickens you see either on TV or if you ever were around a farm.  They are outside running around, spreading their wings...doing things that chickens do instinctly, or naturally.

Now imagine from the time they are born, they are never allowed outside, ever; but are in fact placed in coops the size of maybe the top of your desk, with 9 other chickens.  There is no room to spread their wings.  They never once spread their wings from birth to death, yet having that desire because it is a natural function and part of their ability to clean themselves, to mate, etc.

Now imagine their beaks being clipped off (the area with most of the nerve endings) with some kind of hot iron type machine, so they can not peck each other to death, like they will from the stress of being in tight quarters.

Now imagine 'chicken' fights, as they are so cramped and upset, fights until death, and the dead chicken just rots beside the others.  Maybe the chickens are so hungry from lack of food and water, they even eat it because they have water and food routinely withheld so that they will produce more eggs.  Imagine that life for years, never getting out of that coop.

Now imagine after being given growth hormones, their bodies become so big their legs will not support them, so they fall over and starve to death, again, in the coop with the other chickens.

Imagine as they are never able to wash or groom themselves.  Imagine being electrically shocked in the metal cages to stimulate the egg-laying...

Now imagine they do not produce eggs so they are now ready to be slaughtered for their meat.  They are literally grabbed and thrown violently into the backs of trucks, with broken bones and wings, injured, in trucks extremely hot, for who knows how many hours until they get to the slaughterhouse.

Now imagine being placed on what looks like a conveyor type apparatus, hung by their necks and being wisked by some type of blade that slits open the neck.

I could not watch certain parts and had my eyes closed, but I will never forget the sounds of this kind of treatment/death as long as I live...

These places are not clean, the chickens are not clean.

It is easy to see where the avian flu comes from - we (meaning mankind) have created it by the filth we allow these chickens to live in.

I can not even write about the cows, pigs, turkeys.  Is beyond belief how they many times do not even anesthetize the cows before castrating them.

Dairy cows may not be treated so bad while they are producing milk, but a Huge percent of our meat comes from dairy cows who no longer produce milk.  Their life may be pretty decent for a while, but it is what happens to them afterward...

I can not even go on...it is a nightmare.

Please ban rude and offensive MQLover
This person intentionally starts threads just to cause turmoil.  When people try to answer her back in an intelligent, civilized manner she starts name calling and saying people are stupid, lazy, fat, etc.  This type of nonsense should not be tolerated on this board.  Some of us are professional and would like the timber of this board to be kept that way.  Can you at least ban her until she learns manners and etiquette?  No need to be insulted when we come on here looking for help.  Thank you
That's very rude and offensive to many people (nm)
nm
Whoa, offensive. Maybe I'm old but it's not nice to see
You said you were in your 50s and you would put up a picture like that? I would expect that of a child or teenager but not a grown adult. Like the other poster said, are you trying to gain attention? What I don't understand is why people think the only way to be funny is by using foul language. You asked for opinions, well you got mine.

Also, to the other poster who said the F word is offensive. To the younger generation, the F word is perfectly ok to use yet you take offense to that. See what I mean ROEmpty?

And, I think having pictures with foul language only makes our industry look unprofessional.
it WAS unprofessional; probably meant as a cliche, but still offensive to some - nm

How many posters feel that my avatar is offensive?
I would be interested in any and all feedback on the offensiveness of my avatar. Please feel free to express your honest opinion.

Thank you!
Prior to posting here, this is what I found on Wikipedia and why I assumed it was, if not offensive,

From Wikipedia, searching the term Oriental. See what I have bolded and underlined.

Perceptions and connotations

[edit] American English

Controversy surrounds connotations of the term in American English. (See also American and British English differences.) According to Abdurrahman R. Squires, "politically correct terms have taken the place of the word 'Orientalism'".[2]

While a number of reference works used in the United States describe Oriental as pejorative, antiquated or offensive in some instances, the American Heritage Book of English Usage notes that

It is worth remembering, though, that Oriental is not an ethnic slur to be avoided in all situations. It is most objectionable in contemporary contexts and when used as a noun, as in the appointment of an Oriental to head the commission. In these cases Asian (or a more specific term such as Vietnamese, Korean, or Asian American, if appropriate) is the only acceptable term. But in certain historical contexts, or when its exotic connotations are integral to the topic, Oriental remains a useful term.[3]

Random House's Guide to Sensitive Language states "Other words (e.g., Oriental, colored) are outdated or inaccurate." This Guide to Sensitive Language suggests the use of "Asian or more specific designation such as Pacific Islander, Chinese American, [or] Korean." [4] Merriam-Webster describes the term as "sometimes offensive,"[5] Encarta states when the term is used as a noun it is considered "a highly offensive term for somebody from East Asia." [6]

ur a nut - they use that term on SNL and....nm

programs for adults.........been watching SNL since 1975!!!!  You do the math.

Gaydar....gaydar...gaydar!!  It's all around us today!!!  Key West to San Francisco.....and we all live somewhere in between.  *rofl*  Just because YOU think it's a juvenile term....doesn't mean we are all sheep and think like YOU do.

go to chat room on web site and find out. i'm working but if you find out, let me know.
creepy dude.
Here's a term for you to proofread:
Look that one up!

LOL
It will be long-term, because you are SM
learning to change a whole lifetime of the way you look at situations, but it should be very helpful for you.  Agree, sometimes rehashing the old stuff (if you have accepted that it was what it was and it's not still happening) can be nonproductive in a way and very traumatic.  I have done all types of therapy except analysis (and analysis is an even longer process) and the cognitive therapy was the most helpful for me.  Good luck.
I see what you mean. I think the term "contract"
is what is being used wrong and I didn't clarify it well either in my post.

I doubt the OP signed a contract for the amount of pay. She probably signed a contract discussing engagement, duties, legal status, hours devoted to service, etc. In the actual MT contract, under Fee For Services, it lists that "For services rendered under this Agreement, Employee shall be entitled to payment as set forth on Exhibit A. The Company may modify such pay rate from time to time."

As well, every so-called "contract" I have ever had with MQ made the declaration that "...is a voluntary program that I may withdraw from at any time...I also understand that MQ may change or discontinue this at any time...".

The attorneys for MQ are not going to let them put out a contract that binds them to never changing your pay rate.
Ortho term for PIP fx. sm
Gotta be significant. Listen again. :)

hence the term sodomy

4 thumbs up

A general term for someone who carries out actions with such stupidity that they might as well wear their ass as a hat.

Pete begins looking for his sunglasses, unknowing to the fact that they are on his head. He asks Ed where his glasses are. Ed takes them off his head saying, "You are such a f*cking ass-hat."

knowledge of med term a plus
knowledge of medical terminology is such a plus in the medical field. try applying to a hospital as a unit clerk or a receptionist in a doc office. it is good for the mind to get out there and see people again. maybe you will realize how much you have missed.

Does anyone know what it is called "to feel with the hand"? Is there a medical term for that phrase? Thanks!

Med Term Question
Is carcinoma in situ hyphenated?  Ex.  carcinoma-in-situ or carcinoma in-situ.  Any and all questions greatly appreciated.
Gal Friday was a term used in the 1950s
to describe a female office assistant who can perform a lot of tasks. It's a takeoff on Friday from Robinson Crusoe, and it's also a popular name for secretarial service businesses.
This is where the term "accident" comes into play - sm
I have looked it up for Dork Lady to save her some neuron-firing energy... she needs all the help she can get...
"ACCIDENT": An unexpected and undesirable event, especially one resulting in damage or harm: car accidents on icy roads.
An unforeseen incident.
Lack of intention.
Do you comprehend now Dork Lady? Reality - get a grip on it... save yourself, really...
Need help with ortho term for PIP fracture

I'm working on an ortho eval for a patient with a PIP fracture.  Doctor has dictated an unfamiliar term (there's always that ONE WORD) for me.  He dictates, "X-ray examination today shows impaction at the base of the middle phalanx with approximately 70% joint surface involvement."  Here's the word I don't know (spelled phonetically--Sorry":  "A syphiant(??) portion of the joint surface is translated dorsally."

If someone could point me in the right direction for finding this word, I would really appreciate it!

Ortho term for PIP fracture
I see "significant." :)

Long-term BTS employee

I have worked for BTS for 2 years and enjoy it!  It is difficult waiting for that first check, but you are being paid for the previous pay period, not the one you have just finished.

Overall, I think they are very considerate towards work load, time off, and I enjoy the people I work with on my accounts.  People are always complaining on here about not having work, but we never seem to have a shortage.

I don't know about renting short term,
I think you could rent it and then return it, but you would have to ask. A friend of my rented-to-buy a Dell PC from them and learned a lesson. She paid approx. 200 every two weeks for almost a year. You will pay 3-4 times what the product is actually worth.
There are no long-term contracts
I've rented from them several times, both paying off items and giving some items back when I got something to replace it. You can expect to pay two to three times the price (if not more) for an item then if you just went and bought the item outright which to many sounds outrageous, but some of us don't have the money to fork over for more expensive items. I had a good experience with them each time I rented from them whether I kept something for the whole time or I turned the item back in.
antibiotics long term

The dr. states the patient has been on chronic antibiotics ???pressure??? to ensure that the hip does not become infected.  I know there is a term for this, but it is not coming to me.  Help

Thanks!

Yuppers. Except I wouldn't use the term
"instructed"... more like strongly encouraged?
ACTUALLY....yes both are in books but shotty is the term used when
referring to lymph nodes. It means that they are small, hard, and round. The term came from the comparison between the nodes and BB's, as in little lead thingies shot out of a BB gun.

Shoddy means poorly made. Like if you bought a chair and sat on it and it broke the first day. Shoddy.

Okay then........
prostate biopsy term
I had to flag it and blank it, but if I ever find out what the word was, I'll share.  Thank you all very much for trying to help me figure it out!
Is this a new term in college now? Just curious...nm

If you have a short-term disability

policy (from your company or if you happen to have one on yourself) you should be covered.  If not, you are probably out of luck as far as disability goes.

I'm not sure what type of disability you're asking about.  If you mean long-term disability you'd have to have a policy in place for that also and I think it kicks in 6 months after your disability date.

If you meant Soc Security disability, I can safely say you wouldn't be covered.  You have to be permanently disabled for that.

Disagree. ESL is just what it is. Bigotry term
x
How can you justify excluding the term?
If it was dictated, it stays. Period. These are legal documents as well as medical documents - if the doctor dictated the term he/she WANTS it in the report.

This is different from correcting (deleting/changing etc.) and obvious mistake. This is the MT arbitrarily deciding what to edit. *Unless* you have specific authorization for this type of (reckless in my opinion) editing) type as dictated. IMHO of course.
Compassion often is term for enabling. Often a

I had that term 'sitter' just last week sm

I can't relate just how it would affect opening your own small transcription service. But I'm way behind the times, and maybe someone with current info can be of help. I'm surprised your post has not yet been answered.
