Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I've seen quite a few names, first and last, of people

Posted By: curiousMT on 2005-12-08
In Reply to: I don't really think a public website is the place - another DSG MT

mgmt on this board in the past, in similar situations, which is why I felt I could post this question. I certainly don't think I was not being tactful to the people I asked about, as I complimented them and enjoyed working with them. I wouldn't mind my name being on this board if someone said something nice about me.

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought...sm
that the Dept. of Labor says that if you are released or fired from your job they must pay you your final check withing 72 hours.  If you voluntarily leave, you get your paycheck at the next scheduled pay day.  Is this correct?
When people use last names for first names.
You can't tell what sex the person is, and it just sounds so pretentious and stupid.

Hunter, Tyler, Taylor, Cameron, Morgan, Parker, Porter.

    Really soap-operaish and annoying.
I don't correct, because the DOB might be wrong and the age
    right.  I flag it.
Correct me if I am wrong..
I believe it is a type of voice recognition software. I think. So, please, if I am wrong someone correct me.
As you can already see, you've come to the wrong board! By using the word professional, you've
excluded about 99% of the population of "whatever" it is that hangs on these boards. Certainly not professional for sure! But you sure are doing a good thing for someone! Its the thought that counts. Sorry you met the dregs right at the start.
So simple. Go to the supervisor and tell them the names of the two people who have two different
answers and ask supervisor if she could let you know which of the two answers/orders were correct.  That keeps you out of the middle he-said she-said and the supervisor can once and for all correct this so no one else has to go through second guessing what should be done.
Board names or not, some people, myself included...

don't care to discuss what they make.  Why should we?  It is such an individual thing and based on so many factors that is is impossible to draw any meaningful conclusions.

The type of work, as well as the MTs experience, ability to research effectively, retention and overall knowledge and intelligence, self-discipline (and much more) are variable, to say the least.

What others make is totally irrelevant to what someone else may make.

Oh, please, you delete the names. Where've you been? lol!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think courier 12 gives 65 characters

is less characters since it's larger.  So you probably have a 60-character line instead of 65.  You are probably making more money this way.  Plus a gross line usually pays if there is anything on a line...not just 65 characters.  Each line is counted separately so if it ends with one word, you get paid for a line.

When I was taken from a gross line count to 65 characters, I estimated a 15% reduction in lines.  That's just a guess.

Portal is correct. Co-worker is wrong. nm

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the big MTSOs are using backend ASR. sm
Running sample dictations through their software after it has been transcribed by the transcriptionist, thereby training the ASR software.  The dictator does not do the training (he doesn't sit and dictate into the software).  Future dictations are put through the s/w and then the gibberish the s/w spits out is edited by the MT.
Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I also believe their country pays for their schooling too. sm
I am not sure about their residencies, whether they do them in the US or their own country, but I have also heard it is very easy and very short period to become a doctor in another countries. It scares me more about them not knowing what to do if they have very little training compared to ours. I would flat out refuse to have a foreign doctor work on me!! To the lay Americans though, they cannot understand medical language period so I think they don't understand anyway whether it is English or another language.
don't worry about frantic people who try to make a point by calling names.
They are immediate losers when it comes down to winning any sort of valid logical argument and you can see this person is a LOSER because they did not mention any companies to support their argument and instead lashed out at you. HOW SMART IS THAT?
I've had docs give family members' full names.
privacy.  It is informative to anyone reading the report.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought EMR was where
your medical record is available electronically wherever you are.  I don't think EMR is necessarily the point and click record.  We just had an account went to template use and I think that's what the point and click really is, a template method of keeping records.
I've lost track of how many people who've asked about it to NOT
    .
I think I would refuse too. I've seen some pretty silly names here, including Why Worry Lane and

    sorry, I was wrong....I thought they meant...nm
    .
gosh I never thought anything was WRONG with my bf
I always just knew men are warmer than women for the most part. He is 28 now and is like my heater in the winter, but during the summer it sounds exactly like your husband with the sweating. However this only occurred when we moved to the high desert a couple of years ago. He started soaking the sheets like he peed the bed! Don't worry it may just be he sweats a lot. Does he sleep with blankets on?

What I did in order to stay in the same bed was i just made like a little "barrier" in between us. I mean, it's not the best idea, but if you still want to know he's there, at least you won't be touching the sweatiness. I used pillows...

    hope everything is okay
Might be completely wrong but thought I saw where HUD
was able to assist someone in your situation. Give them a call, you know nothing ventured.....
OMG at first I thought I had the wrong site. I couldn't believe that's what you were talking
Do you get cramps at all from holding it? The reason I ask is because I used to from holding game controllers. Are you basically using the same fingers to keys as with a conventional keyboard? I bet that felt odd the first time you held it! Thanks for sharing. I'll definitely look into for the mouse benefit alone. Reaching for the mouse KILLS my shoulder.

    Thanks again!
LOL. Some people ask me what is wrong with them sm
after finding out I am an MT.  Maybe I should charge a consultation fee.
    People like you are wrong!
You should be ashamed of yourself!
What on earth is wrong with you people? sm
So this means that you don't give a rip who types YOUR and YOUR FAMILY'S medical reports or how badly it's done? That you just zip through the reports to get them done with and rack up those lines? Shame on you.

You know, all this bickering and fighting is because MT is paid "by the pound." Anytime people are paid strictly on production, this is the result. Not good for us, not good for patients.
What is wrong with the PEOPLE of this Country
I don't really disagree with much you wrote (except that there are plenty of good unions out there)...

but here's what drives me nuts: You ask, rightly, what's wrong with the government?

What's wrong is the PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY have chosen to roll over and LET the government do what it wants MOST of the time.

PATRIOTISM means more than waving a flag or whining online. PUT YOUR FEET in the street and/or CALL OR GO SEE your reps in congress

BRING A GROUP better yet. As long as WE JUST PAY THE TAX MAN they will continue to RIP YOU OFF.

You get what you choose to tolerate.

I think the QA people are dead wrong
if they get upset over what they consider "too many" blanks. Of course they're right about not guessing, but obviously they're sending you mixed signals by not wanting you to leave blanks either.

I'm a former MT who is now an Editor and I get a lot more upset over not enough blanks than with too many. I don't think there's even such a thing as too many blanks if you're dealing with a jerky doctor who can't be understood and doesn't care enough to take a few extra minutes to speak distinctly.

I'll often receive work that contains obvious mistakes, but the dictation is so bad that I can't with any certainty make a correction. When that happens, I take out what I know wasn't said and replace it with a blank.

I wish I had an answer for your situation. But please know that not all of us editors are like those you're having to deal with.
Previous posters are 100% correct. Here's what I've learned...
There have been a lot of very good points brought out here, and I encourage you to consider the advice that has been offered and think this over very, very carefully before making a decision.

I've been in this business since 1996. I went to school (with 3 small children at home), studied at 4 a.m., maintained another full-time job, earned a 4.0, was lucky enough to get a part-time job in MT before I even graduated. I excelled at MT, loved the work and have worked my way up to the top. It has been a lucrative career for me and I've had the chance to stay at home with my kids while they were young (and I still work at home and enjoy being here for my junior high and high school age kids.)

HOWEVER, times have changed. I'm an MT instructor at a local college. We made the decision to drop the MT program because we simply cannot place new grads. I don't care how smart you are, how good your grades are, how much potential you have or how motivated you are--it's very, very difficult, if not impossible, to get a job working at home as a new grad. (Finding a job in a clinic is a little easier, but still difficult.)

If you are one of the few who are lucky enough to find a job working at home as a new grad, you will make next to nothing for at least the first year. New grads are NOT prepared to meet production quotas, they still need mentoring, and they still have a tremendous amount to learn. Most jobs, especially working at home jobs, are production based. As a new grad you will spend most of your time researching, and your production will be minimal; therefore, so will your salary. In addition, most work-at-home jobs have production quotas. Meeting a quota when you are still in the learning phase leads to a tremendous amount of pressure, which in turn, leads to frustration and is not conducive to learning and retaining information.

My first boss (the one who hired me as a new grad) gave me some words of wisdom that I haven't forgotten. She said that transcribing at home with small children NEVER works under any circumstance. Either the work will suffer or the parenting will suffer. I, of course, thought I would be the exception. (My kids were age 2, 4, and 9 at the time.) She had 25 years of experience as an MT and as an MTSO owner, and she was absolutely right. I learned quickly that I could be successful working PART-TIME with small children, but trying to do it full-time defeated the purpose. When you are transcribing, you may be physically "at home," but if you are doing a good job, your mind is tuned in to your work, not your kids. Constant interruptions lead to low production, errors, and huge frustration. I found that I could work a few hours in the early morning before they woke up, fit in a few hours throughout the day and finish up late at night after they were in bed. I was in a position at that time not to need a full-time income, so this was a nice compromise, and it prepared me for full-time work later on when they were all in school. I consider that period of time an extension of my training.

Like another poster said, I do not want to rain on your parade, but tuition is not cheap. (I'm STILL paying off a student loan.) Additionally, MT is not an "easy" curriculum to learn, and it takes a certain skill set and personality type in order to excel and succeed. You will invest a lot of time, money, and effort just in the process of completing your training. It may or may not be worth it in the long run. Career college admissions reps are paid on a commission basis; therefore, they don't always give you the "rest of the story." Those of us who have posted here today are trying to give you "the rest of the story," and our intention is not to discourage you but rather to give you an accurate picture of what MT is truly like, not what the admissions counselor might have told you.

If you do decide to go forward, go with your eyes wide open. I would also encourage you to find a mentor who can advise you along the way.
You certainly do not have to. Then again, if you've done nothing wrong,
it can establish the facts of the matter. You want to be sure the other driver isn't trying to escape liability or that comparative negligence isn't a factor in insurance payment. If it was me, I would do the recorded statement because it can only help your situation. Being rear ended isn't automatically the other driver's fault. I rear ended somebody, but it was her fault for not using her turn signal and gearing down instead of using her brakes. She had to pay me because her comparative negligence portion was figured at 85% versus my 15% for not slowing sooner.

FWIW, I've been transcribing for an insurance company for about 10 years now. I transcribe recorded statements and reports. You should do the recorded statement because it will only help your situation.
Now..I've been know to be wrong...but...
isn't it metacarpophalangeal joint? I can't seem to reference metacarpal-phalangeal joint in any of my references.

And, according to Stedman's Orthopaedic Words, there IS a carpophalangeal joint.

You need to brush up on your adjoining terms before you go correcting a physician.
I agree, nasty and rude people lately, where are the grownups is correct in a former post.
I agree with all you said. I come here sometimes just to share thoughts, experiences, and to really help others as it helps me to help. There are some unnecessary, hurtful responses on here. The admin cannot police all and she should not be expected to. Have a little consideration, people, we are all in the same lifeboat here. As for leaving the profession, think about it. I have been tempted many times, have tried working in other fields but totally boring after hearing all that I've heard as an MT. I can't read a non-fiction book as it all seems so shallow and ridiculous to me. For too many years I have shared the lives of people on a real, non-fictional basis through my work. It is an interesting and informative profession and even doctors are amazed at how much information I have  in this little brain of mine. I have on occasion saved many people in my family (including myself) from unnecessary harm or eary intervention. Please think about it before you leave us. As for this board, I llove it except for the nasty posts, but that's life. As we all know, it takes all kinds. Most people here belong in the helping profession. If they're in it for the money, it shows. Character shows up in the positive posts on here. We are, after all, supposed to be in the helping profession, not the kill or be-killed attitude some have. I would say most of us come in here for  knowledge, friendship and just plain sharing. If we have a little laugh once in awhile, it helps, but not when it turns into a cat fight. IMHO, of course!
people sometimes goof off at work, nothing wrong with that
It doesnt take up THAT much time.
I cannot stress enough people really have the wrong idea
about VR. I have been transcribing over 35 years now, not a newbie, not slow, transcribed at straight over 2000 lines per day always and I now just hate to straight transcribe anymore. Where are people getting the idea, and I see it often on this board, that one category fits all? I am held to as high standards as others, having to maintain 97-98% accuracy every 3 months when graded. Unless you know your job extremely well, no newbie can do this. You have to be fast and extremely accurate to do corrections on VR.
I absolutely agree with you. You've made it grammatically correct
    hope this all comes through.

Your change is much better than the one suggested below which totally changes the sentence and would not be correct in my opinion.
    I've thought about it---
It's just that I know people in the Whitehall-Twin Bridges area-- they have all been keeping their eyes and ears open for me. Also, I love the mountains. Eastern MT is a lot more flat, hotter in summer and colder in winter. I did like Miles City when I was there for the Bucking Horse Sale a few years ago. We'll see---.
    I've thought about it
After having the taxes done, I was so disappointed. I made really good money, but after the deductions and then figuring the hours I worked, it wasn't so great after all. I'm tired of working weekends and holidays. I'm tired of the nightmare I go through every time I take a day or two off to get caught up.

I would think the benefits alone would be worth returning inhouse ... if you get them. Sick Leave. Vacation Leave. Retirement. Insurance. No more self-employment tax.

And no matter how hard I emphasize that I am not to be disturbed when working in my home office, there is always the interruption for "just five seconds." I'm tired of the lack of respect for my career and my working hours.

I say, "GO FOR IT." Good luck!

    i've thought
-- if i didn't have to work at home -- that it would be "gravy" to do the dictating for a physician -- at least we'd know how to pronounce things correctly and what things are important to the MT on the other end. Don't know how lucrative it would be tho...
yes, I've thought of that ....
but it is a union position and their hands are tied, as per HR. My boss would give me more $$ if she could. Our sister hospital is NOT in the union and that MT makes $4 an HOUR more than me! Aagghh!!
Well, as for me, I've always thought sm
intense heed is very important, don't you?
First, cyber hugs. Next, you've done nothing wrong
There is no reason for you to feel humiliated. He is the problem, not you. You know your family best and must choose the path that seems right to you. However, please consider making it clear to your family, your mother in particular, what has been going on and why you have been forced to make this choice. He has no right to make you miserable. Is there a trusted family member in whom you could confide? Having an ally in your family would likely lighten the burden. In any event, please strengthen your relationships outside your family so that you have caring friends and associates to count on if there is no one in your family to turn to.
You've got some aspects wrong, Curious.
No one is trying to screw anyone out of lines. It's just not our job to make sure YOU have your work done, period. We're doing what we are told and allowed to do, flat out.

It isn't my responsibility whatsoever to make sure lines are spread out evenly, to make sure anyone else has lines, etc. My job is to get the work done with as much quality and speed as possible. My responsibility is to ensure my household is stable and to keep a good, solid relationship with my employer.

Your "poor me, I'm a victim" mentality does you in.
LOL. Wow, you've thought about that one a lot, haven't you?

It's good to have a plan, I agree.  I'd like to set up an SEP retirement account for myself because I know social security won't be there for me.

No, I'm just really tired of job hunting.  My perfect job would be parttime with regular steady hours.  I don't care if I'm SE or IC.  It's not about only wanting to work when I want to.  I know that the company needs coverage.  However, I'd like to be able to take a day off when I'm sick instead of being told, "No, we need this work done.  Nobody can do it except for you."  I could even make up my hours, but IC seems to mean you're not allowed to get sick or anything.  It just seems like you sell your soul to the devil just for the "luxury" of working at home.  I'm so extremely tired from everyone demanding from me all the time.  I pitch in all the time when they're out of TAT or someone else is absent, but I'm not allowed to have needs of my own.  The more you give of yourself, the more everyone wants.  I feel as if there's nothing left inside of me.

I've thought about it, but am usually too burned out ..(s/m)
.. at the end of the day to want to do more transcribing. But that may be a good way to get my feet wet... maybe filling in as a part time IC for someone who is on sick leave or vacation, so it would only be temporary.

    Thanks for your thoughts!
wrong....I've been there, believe me the stockpile of liquor is just as great as in the US
there are just no bars, and there are underground church services all over.  You learn to make your own wine.   Company I worked for had ministers and priests (called them teachers on their work permit), with full active services in a special house.  Believe me its nothing like you all think it is there.   Nothing.
I simply chose the wrong link. See inside for the correct link.
    See link
I've always thought the difficult dictators should be
weighted at the very least to compensate the MT at a higher rate for their effort. I think the cherrypickers, if they are not going to be stopped, should at least get lower pay for their reports.

Of course, if you paid 2 cents more for Dr. ESL's work then you'd have to set a limit to how many blanks could be accepted period or the cherrypickers would do them and leave nothing BUT blanks to get the money.

It would have been better for them to have never tried the "send back to pool" block than to let the complainers overrule and win. Sad.

Do you have a bachelor's degree? I've thought about

but the lack of a bachelor's degree is really the main weeding-out tool/stumbling block for me, darn it.  I didn't realize it was such a major requirement for this type of job too ... as far as http://www.fdch.com goes, anyway.  I thought maybe not having experience in court reporting/CAT machine transcription would be the breaker, actually.

    Interesting, but.... (sigh)

I've always thought that podiatrists are trying to trump themselves up into something
    s
Great idea...I've often thought of doing some...

thing similar.  After all, AAMT was started by individuals with an idea.  Unfortunately the original, most likely that *good* idea has been long lost.

So, form a new organization.  Set up testing.  Issue a credential.  Actually represent the American MT.  What a concept.

Don't understand why not. I thought I've seen other posts similar to this before. I'm not t

cause any problems, but as I work for DSG, so I'm naturally curious. As I said, I liked working with them both. Is it a secret?

So instead of training him, you thought euthanazia would be a better idea? Tired of people thinking
    :{
I've thought about sitting in the camper or locking myself in the bedroom before,
but those wouldn't work either.  I've been trying to take a nap all weekend due to lack of sleep and a nasty cold, but every five minutes, someone's pounding on the locked bedroom door and whining for Mooooommm!!!!  Cripes, sometimes I can't even use the bathroom or take a shower without five or six interruptions.  As much as I love them, my entire family has been driving me apestuff this past week.  My office is currently in the living room with the phone, TV, video game system, stereo, front door, and most of the household foot traffic running through.  That's going to change soon when we turn the old dining room into a private office with soundproof walls and a locking door.
