Comfort Standard keyboard

SM lead me to the website that sells several different keyboards. The one I'd be ordering (if I had any money...ha-ha!) would be the Comfort Standard. Check out www.sforh.com/keyboards/split and you'll see which one I'm talking about. It's $$350, so I guess I'll just have my old one fixed and save up the money for the Comfort Standard. :)

If you use a standard keyboard you can buy an old IBM model M keyboard on ebay or clickykeyboards.co
That key printing never wear down because the letters are part of the key itself. They just don't make them that way anymore because it is too expensive to make. Some of the mechanical keyboards like Cherry have what they double shot key imprinting and the letters are part of the key itself and don't wear off. That IBM keyboard is very noisy from the type of keyswitch it has so you may not like that. Logitech and Belkin make some membrane switch keyboards that are supposed to have longer lasting key imprints. I have a logitech that has the longer lasting key imprints and it is pretty good. You have to look on the specs to find out if has the longer lasting key printing.
I have experimented so much with keyboards and have done a lot of research. Way too much info.

I'm waiting for my keyboard now for two weeks, when I was told it would take two days. I just spent 300 hundred bucks on this thing, i've called several times, there is a tracking number and everything, but no one seems to know where my package is?? Just wondering if anyone has ordered successfully from these people and if I should just be patient. This is why I do not order on line very much!

Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000 keyboard
I read where some MTs were enjoying this keyboard, and they are quite inexpensive, so DH picked one up for me at Tiger Direct. Whoever recommended it is right; it has an quick touch for me and you can switch from a straight keyboard and it won't slow you down like most of the ergonomic keyboards. I usually like a very clicky touch, and this isn't like that. But the key action is quick and you barely have to touch them to activate the keys. The backspace is double-wide too. Since there is no space in the middle like so many ergonomic keyboards, there is no issue about reaching the 6 with your preferred hand, either.

I used to get hand and wrist pain. I still do if I'm forced to use a standard keyboard.
I bought an ergonomic keyboard and use a telescoping keyboard drawer so I can prop the side of the board that's closest to me up in the air. That forces my wrists into the proper position and spreads my hands apart. It works wonders. I thought I would have to quit MT before ever really getting started, but I'm able to work pretty much fulltime now.

Sorry to hear of your RA. I know it can be very painful and you are right, we have a job where no one sees us and who cares what we are wearing or where we do our work as long as we are happy,comfortable and productive.
I've never tried working outside but I do like the window open on a nice day to let in the breeze and the sun. Generally work evenings so spend a lot of time outside during the daytime anyway. Often thought of getting an RV and being a mobile MT.
That would be a lot of fun I think as long as you have a good reliable broadband connection and your computer was easily transported. That way you could be a snow bird in the winter and come north in the summer or whatever and do it in the comfort of an RV. RV sales are down though. I wonder why??? 
Does anyone have a Comfort Select bed and if so...how do you like it? nm

Sleep Comfort Bed
We bought a Select Comfort bed. It is wonderful. My husband had really bad back problems but since getting the Select Comfort he has not had any problems (except when we sleep away from home). He loves it and recommends it to everyone!

Question about comfort
I had read somewhere about noise-cancelling headsets being uncomfortable and hot on the ears. Any problem like that with the Bose?
Bose Quiet Comfort 2 - now they have a new
version which supposedly is even better - QC3. They are AMAZING. They do block out background noise, though its subtle. And the clarity is amazing! I can hear what the doctor is thinking!

Pricey but worth it. Blocks out family's TV noise, muffles sound of vacuum cleaner, makes barely audible dictation clearer.

for a SUV. Rent one for a day or so before you buy, that way you can really tell if you like it. We usually rent something that we're thinking of buying when we go on vacation.

Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000?
More about keyboards ... I don't think I would like the big MS 4000, because when I tested out large ones in the store one day, it felt too big and awkward for me; however, I did try a smaller one with just a slight curve that felt quite good. (Unfortunately, I don't remember what make/model it was as I was not really shopping for one at the time.)
When looking around the web, it looks like it might have been the MS Comfort Curve 2000. Does anyone have any experience with that one?

Bose headphone Quiet Comfort 2 or 3 better?
Anyone tried both and have a preference? Any positives or negatives (besides the outrageous price?) I bought the Quiet Comfort 2 in the store after trying the demo model of the QC 3. I thought the over the ear would be better for blocking noise, but I am not certain they are as good as the QC3 (on the ear). I just want a pair of headphones that will block out my kids being home this summer, as I have to work in the dinning room corner and I hear everything. Might try a different brand/model all together because for 300-350 dollars I am not the Bose are worth it. Thanks for your input!

I use a laptop with a full-size keyboard (no separate keyboard)
I'm using a lap desk but previously was using a pillow with a book on it under the laptop. No additional keyboard though, I bought one with a full-sized board with regular size keys (an HP) which I LOVE and it took no time at all to get used to it. I also love that when the weather improves, I can take my computer outside and get some fresh air! What a great job... :)

It will depend on how much experience you have and how well you are doing with the work. My first company kept me on QA for 6 weeks, although they typically kept new MTs on QA for the first 12. My second company kept me on QA for 2 days, and for my current company I sent 3 reports through QA and then was released.
Definitely not the standard. I would not
work anywhere where I had to pay to use their software. Keep looking, there are good jobs out there.

reason, because it makes it easier to read. It's a crock & I don't plan to quit putting 2 spaces after a period.

If 4 cpl is the VR rate, then you are getting paid, but if they had stated a certain number of hours or days for training pay, then you should receive that amount specified as training pay. If they simply said you're paid for training, that could very well mean that you will be paid your training rate for your 1.5 hours of training. What company is it?

Kinesis Keyboard and keyboard tray
Okay, any lefties use this keyboard? How long did it take to get used to? I use my left thumb for the space bar and I notice on a diagram of the keys that I would always be hitting the backspace key.
I'm really interested in getting a better keyboard. I destroyed my left hand and wrist the other week when I fell because I'm becoming a real klutz.
I bought the Soft Flex gloves, but they only help a little bit. My production is down because of it and it's driving me crazy. I can only type an hour without stopping and then have to rest the hand for some time.
I did buy a Microsoft 2000 keyboard but have yet to recieve it. Is this a good one?
Do you use a keyboard tray with it or just set it on the desk? Do you think a kayboard tray would be the least expensive item right now that would help with a straight keyboard?
Any info you can provide to help me in making any decision would be greatfully appreciated.

That's kind of standard, isn't it? I mean (SM)
every hospital and every MT company I've ever worked for, to be a full-time employee you had to account for 40 hours a week, either by working it, or taking PTO, unless you were covered under FMLA.
I think sometimes we expect even more flexibility working from home and forget the fact that working from home IS flexibility -- not having to go into the office, being in the comfort of our home (if we want our children or family around us, that is our option--not so in an office), etc.
The 40-hour expectation is very standard, in my experience. You have PTO to use for when you cannot make up your absence. My guess is they will offer more PTO with this new plan coming up.
Try not to panic or be upset. No one knows what the new plan will be. We will each have to decide if the new plan is what we need or not. If it isn't, thank goodness there are other companies to work for out there.
Please try to relax.

and it still happened to me. What I couldn't understand was that I was supposed to be in a less likely audit bracket because that year I was an employee, an IC and an SE. (they were trying to see if I met employee status on my SE account).

Double standard
So we expect MDs to always have their complete attention on every word out of their mouths, which would be nice, but some of them put in 70 or more hours a week at the office/hospital, and have mountains of dictation to complete each week. But we expect them to never make a misspeak, even though on these boards we have a heart attack if one poster points out another poster's spelling or grammar error. Never mind that we are supposed to be better at English than the MDs, but we don't have to use our skills in writing posts (which is MUCH easier to do well than never making a misspeak), even if the post has to do with getting a job. That's quite a double standard, if you ask me.
What is the industry standard...sm
Tried to post this on Wednesday, will try again...I need to know what is the industry standard conversion for minutes dictated to minutes typed? Not how much do you do - but what is average for one hour dictation - how many hours typed. Bosses think we're taking too long but we do not get automatic demographics and need to look on log sheets (if they arrive and if they're correct) for everything from patient name to referring doctors, addresses, patient #'s, etc. So I need to give him an "average" number of hours dictated equal "X" amount of hours typed taking into consideration the lack of information, the searching we must do and the various typing speeds. I'm not going to "judge" anyone's advice - just need some input from those that have been there. Thanks for sharing.
AAMT is only the standard on
That account would be the one I type online. The other accounts, that are much more profitable than the typing I do online could give a rat's crap whether I'm certified. They think I'm great, and they pay me for it. No QA (don't need it), and my TAT is great. I'm very reliable, accountable, and have a lot of social grace. Not a machine here.... typing out those lines for the almight online MTSO's. Just type for one, and thank goodness they are fair, and I don't feel like I'm "doin' time". I get raises, and they don't hassle me all day through IM or nitpicky QA issues. Spent 1-3 days in QA when I first started, and now whatever they give me, I type, and do not require QA.
