Cerner/Citrix and Shortand

I am fairly new to this hospital which uses Cerner with something called Citrix. We type in Word within their program so can use Autocorrect and Autotext. I have asked around to a manager and a couple employee and it seems no one is aware of a word Expander program other than those with Word, that can be used without problems. Apparently the hospital transcription department has tried Smarttype but that did not work right. I'm wondering if anyone has had success with ShortHand for Windows and this program. It seems to be a program that works with most systems. Has anyone had any success with Cerner and shorthand? Thanks.

Just pray they don't use a Citrix server. MAJOR problems have come from Meditech+Citrix.

my shortand is driving me nuts
It's running so slowly behind what I am typing that I am really messing up and have not even added that many items to it yet. I need it for a job I have that you cannot use autocorrect, which I love, but have to use shorthand. Is there something I can adjust so it does not lag so far behind
Shortand for Windows program is slow
with the auto text feature, that is when it is putting in the words, it takes longer than it should. I'm sure there is a setting but can't remember what it is. Any suggestions to speed it up? TIA (sorry if this gets sent twice, trying to validate email, etc.)
Cerner is a pie system for MTs...(sm)
A hospital I used to work for went to Cerner about a year before I left. It was very nice for the MTs compared to the dinosaur system we had before it. The front office and billing I cannot say were so happy about it..and expect alot of headaches throughout your department until they get used to it. But as far as the MT side of it..it was great. LOVED the lil "sticky notes" you could enter on a document to bring something to the rad's attention before they could sign it off.
Incentive by minutes with Cerner
Hi -
The hospital I work for went with Cerner a year or so ago. Their software is so bad, our required minutes were lowered to 80 minutes/8hr. Incentive starts at 91.3 min/8hr.
Shorthand will work with Cerner, but... SM
your hospital IT department will probably tell you it won't work and you will probably also be told you cannot load personal software on hospital-owned equipment. There is a way around this, however. If you have a jump/flash drive you can download the SH program for their website when asked where to save the download file, choose your jump drive (it is drive F: on my PC, maybe different on yours).
Once the file is downloaded, open up your jump drive and double click on the install icon. When you get to the step of the installation that asks where you want to install the program (usually defaults to C:programs) change that to your jump drive. Then install the program. Now, the program is installed on your jump drive. You can take your jump drive and plug it in to any PC, open up your drive, double click on the SH icon to run the program, and the SH program will run in the background on whatever PC you are using (you will see the SH icon in your right lower corner with your clock). It is not installed on the PC, so you are not breaking any "rules" that the hospital may have. Once you are done for the day, double click the SH icon and shut down the program and unplug your dive. No one will ever know. It'll be your little secret.
I did this for years. I worked on Cerner RadNet and got the same run around about Expander programs. I just did it myself and nobody ever knew.
Good Luck!
I work for a hospital that has Cerner Classic Radnet and a service that sm
uses Cerner Millenium Radnet. The two are completely different. The Classic version does EXACTLY what you described with ShortHand but they found a solution at the hospital. I will look at it on Wednesday when I go to work. I'm embarassed to say that I have used it for so long that I don't pay attention anymore and can't remember the name of the program.
Thanks for your input. We type regular medical reports in Meditech and radiology in Cerner. SM
I am really considering presenting the idea that we measure productivity on minutes transcribed instead of lines. I don't know if management will go for it, but it seems like the best scenario considering all the trouble we've had.
Thanks again!
Meditech/Citrix
Meditech and Citrix "hate" each other for some reason. I have a radiology account where we all went through the same problems - losing reports, sluggish performance, getting kicked off, documents freezing up etc. The I.S. Departmet at the hospital I work for got so sick of hearing from us transcription gals, they finally set us all up with VPN connections and ALL problems were resolved. It is a tad bit slower with the VPN connection typing and saving documents, but to avoid all of the B.S using the Citrix platform, it is well worth it!
Meditech/Citrix
I am also having trouble with this and I also have Comcast digital ISP...but I am having trouble getting any website. I have worked in MediTech/Citrix for 2 years and it does tend to bog down when very many people are on it, plus I have had trouble off and on the whole 2 years doing exactly what you said.
Citrix/Speech Q
The hospital I work for just went live with the radiology platform Speech Q last week. I can access via Citrix from home but cannot get the foot pedal to work. Any ideas...........? Thanks!
Meditech Expander on Citrix
Hi all, I have searched the forums and can't find an answer. My hospital recently went to Meditech and I am typing on Meditech through a website on Citrix. None of my Expanders work with the Citrix website.
Any ideas? I have tried Shortcut, Flashtype and As You Type and nothing works. I am ready to pull my hair out. Hope someone can help.
Meditech Expander on Citrix
I have ShortHand 9X and when I press the spacebar for the expansion, I get the Meditech message, just like I pressed F12, asking me if I want to save the text. It doesn't expand.
? for Meditech/Citrix users
Okay, aggravation. Still have dail-up. Had appt. to have cable hooked up tomorrow morining they just discovered today they don't run cable where I live, which incidentally is only about 3 miles out of the nearest town!
Typing in Meditech via Citrix metaframe. Due to current with delay from dail up I am typing body of report in Word and pasting into Meditech which has speeded things up a great deal.
I was planning to have satellite hooked up next week. Before I chunk out that money, I know satellite is very slow with a VPN and that the Citrix metaframe may work similarly.
Anyone out there working in Meditech via Citrix Metaframe ON SATELLITE without problems. I read that it can slow it down 50-75%?
They can't figure out if its Citrix or Meditech but regardess
we are still stuck with the problem until they can find a fix. If they are even actually looking for one. You know how it is-- if it works for billing, filing, nursing, accounting, who cares if it works for transcription... Perhaps other Meditech users can comment?
Are there any other Meditech/Citrix users that are having trouble?
we are having terrible difficulties. System kicking us off, sluggish performance, losing reports. Any one else on Meditech accounts (accessed through Citrix)dealing with this?
When I used this combo, we had this problem. IT had to replace Citrix with something else.
They had to do a lot of tweaking, and they were somewhat resistant. They had trouble understanding that letters need to appear immediately ... or sooner.
I am suspicious it is the Citrix because I remember it slowed down a hospital program I used to use
IT had to change from Citrix to something else to get it to speed up and work better. I don't know what Citrix is, but it must be bad, LOL.
Our Meditech connects through a Citrix server, and kicks us off, freezes up, doesn't allow log on
If the system has a lot of users on, then it lags. You hit the keys but the letters don't appear right away. Try doing the backspace key with that. It does not have a word Expander and only certain ones will work with it. ShortHand does but some of the others do not. It has archaic functions. The patient demographics are entered separately from the body of the report, so you don't get paid for those lines. It takes multiple key strokes to make font changes, etc.
But other than that, it is fine LOL
Meditech questions and Cerner questions. Any input is appreciated. SM
I just recently went back to work in the office at a local hospital. We type in both Meditech and Cerner, depending on what you are typing, i.e. Medical Records reports versus Radiology. We are currently typing blindly in Meditech, meaning we do not have access to our line counts and must depend on management to give us our totals. In Cerner, we are able to run a line count report and print out a hard copy of our line counts at the end of the day.
We are finding that 800 lines in Cerner equals about 500 lines in Meditech. We are not paid per line nor do we have an incentive plan, but we have a new HIM Director who would like to institute an incentive plan and the administrator over our department has laid down the law and decreed that all transcriptionists not making minimum in the department will be written up. Problem is according to Meditech line totals that we have been given, that would be about half the department.
The transcription supervisor has taken our concerns to the new director who told the MT Supervisor to hold off on writing people and has taken home all the line counts from the last month and she is going over them with a fine tooth comb this weekend.
I am not a very trusting soul by nature, so I am doing a little research on my own. I've been in this business for about 15 years. I started out in a hospital and have worked for a few services at home and am now back in the hospital setting. So I know a few things about line count and I consider myself to be pretty well informed on trends and technology in the industry. I would like to walk into our next department meeting armed with as much knowledge as possible. So I have come up with some questions that I would like some fellow MTs to answer, give opinions, and maybe even direct me to websites or individuals who could give me a better understanding of Meditech and Cerner. Here are my questions:
- Is it possible for an MT to have access to her line count in Meditech or is strictly a management function? Any MTs that work in Meditech on this board, do you currently have access to your line counts and if so, how do you check them? Is it an option on the main menu after you log into Meditech?
- How is a line defined in Meditech? (i.e. 65 cpl, with spaces, without spaces)
- How is a line defined in Cerner?
- What abbreviation Expanders work with both Meditech and Cerner?
- Examples of incentive plans (if anyone would like to share that with me that would be great, if not I completely understand).
- Measuring productivity by minutes of dictation versus typed lines.
- What would be the minimum minutes required for an 8-hour day?
- How would one structure an incentive program based on minutes?
I was thinking of presenting the idea that we keep track of productivity using minutes instead of lines since there is such a discrepancy in Meditech. I also worry that if an incentive plan is put into place and we are still typing blind into Meditech, what's to keep management from shaving off a few lines here and there?
Feel free to email me or post here any responses. Either is fine. I really appreciate any input, comments, or just plain old supportive posts would be nice too!
