ceramic tile or vinyl
Hi; when we bought our house it had carpet in the bathrooms, dining room and kitchen (even UNDER the stove!!). Couldn't wait to get it out of those places. We did go with Pergo in the dining room and kitchen, and it has done very well; however, there are no children in our home so there is less wear and tear on it. We have had it about 5-6 years and it is holding up very well. Just thought I'd share my experience with it :)
I love ceramic tile.

I had vinyl tile in my kitchen most of my life and had switched to ceramic for a while now.  I love the ceramic tile for ease of cleaning and durability.  It doesn't stain and it doesn't rip or peel up after a while either.   It's more expensive, but well worth it in the long run.

ceramic tile/vinyl
I have had ceramic tile in my kitchen and also vinyl. Ceramic does clean much easier, looks nicer, but it is very slippery when wet, can cause a concussion if you fall on a wet floor or that, and if you drop anything, boy does that object shatter. I like vinyl better, harder to keep clean but with the new vinyl floors now they are beautiful. I would choose vinyl over ceramic, but that is just my opinion.
I have vinyl but I think ceramic tile looks nicer.

POLL: Off subject - Ceramic tile or vinyl
I recenly bought a big house that has carpet in the kitchen.  I want to take the carpet out but don't know if I should go for ceramic tile or vinyl flooring.  Any suggestions?
I would go with vinyl. We have tile now and I think it killed my dog. -sm
She slipped and fell on it when she slopped her water. I almost did too. She could hardly move. I think she might have broken some ribs. At the least they had to be bruised. It was actually my husband's cousin's dog so he took her to the vet and they put her to sleep on me. The vet said she was in severe pain. She was my little buddy. I never had an animal that loved me so much. (And I've always been a cat person.)

Tile is very slippery, hard, and cold too. I found the vinyl a lot easier to clean. Our tile is a mess. It cracked, the grout is dirty even though it was sealed. It's mostly because of the dogs that it's so yucked up. I can't stand going over by the front wall. It's soooo cold there, but I'm really intolerant to cold.

Our vinyl lasted a lot longer and was more comfortable than the tile. Not to mention, we had to cut all the doors besides.
Ceramic vs vinyl
A big NO to the vinyl. It buckles, peels and lifts off the cement underneath if it gets too wet...especially where the cove basing (under the sink cabinets) meets the floor.

If you can afford it, definitely go for ceramic. Last a long, long time, looks much better but be prepared to be diligent about cleaning the grout between the tiles...if you ignore it for too long, it will darken.
I think I participated in that; certainly fit in the highest %tile in just about all categories.

Ceramic is prettier, but very slippery, so depends what is more important to you and family

red kool aid in carpet HELP
any suggestions on how to get this stain out of the carpet.  The carpet is the sand/beige color.  I have soaked up with towels and water, but there is still a pink hue.
I definitely would have gone into CARPET CLEANING!!!!!!!!!!!!
Carpet cleaning is an incredibly lucrative industry and wish I went into that 25 years ago.  I got into transcription to get out of bagging groceries.  It quite a change for me.  But sad to say, I got burned in many different ways in this particular field (transcription).  I love doing pathology though.  But believe me, I have found that people are much quicker to pay for cleaning services than anything else.  Making between 17 and 30 grand a year is ok, but in carpet cleaning, a guy/girl can make at least 50 grand on his/her own first year out.  This is no joke nor is it an insult to the transcription industry.  Just a comparison.  Regrets?  yeah, some.  But it seems to me that no matter how old you are, if you have the ambition and desire, it's never too late to start over again.
Shopping for new carpet but not sure

I have 4 animals so it would have to be durable.  My budget does not allow for anything but carpet and the one I have has had it.

Can anyone suggest an attractive yet durable carpet?  I also wonder about the glue and will there be fumes?

Thank you for your time.

In the Kitchen and it is the worst but

I purchased a pair of those earmuffs that people use at the shooting range and although I have received many laughs, these are the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   I use the little earbuds for headphones and the earmuffs on top and get some peace and quiet.  I also put them on when I do not want to be bothered.  I have in-laws over a lot to help with my 4 year old and we live in an apartment so these earmuffs are literally the best thing to happen to my work.  I work a lot of nights and would just keep my husband up if it were in the bedroom.  I really don't think I would want the computer screen staring at me while I am trying to sleep anyway.

kitchen question
I have some acacia wooden salad bowls, serving dishes, etc which I am giving as a wedding present. I know this type of wood is known for its durability but I am wondering if wooden dishes are microwave safe. Also, I remember my mother using them to serve some hot foods. Do they stain with such foods as hot tomato dishes, spinach or berries? Is ther some another way to remove those stains other than bleach? Just wondering if there anybody out there who knows about this?
I had to remove one from the kitchen a little

It was the middle of the night, as I was walking towards the kitchen, I noticed the snake (maybe 14" long, maybe 2" in diameter) side winding towards the refrigerator.  I am a nature person but only to a certain degree, so don't want the snakes in my home or any reptile for that matter.  I bent down as far as I could with my arthritic hips, scooped the snake up into a dust pan with my arthritic fingers as fast as I could (which wasn't very fast) and walked it up my very steep driveway towards a nearby drain.  I didn't want to kill it, just get it far away from the house as I could.  I never heard from it again.  However, I have bird feeders near the house and maybe that is why I had to even deal with it being in my home in the first place.  Not much of a reptile or insect person.  I remove the lizards from the house too instead of killing but will spray or destroy insects.

moldy smell in carpet
I had the same thing and ended up finally tearing up the whole carpet and pad, then installing a wood laminate floor. It was expensive, but I had tried EVERYTHING, to no avail. Baking soda and vinegar are excellent remedies, IF the mold hasn't seeped into the pad. If it has, there is virtually nothing that will remove the smell altogether. We hadn't noticed the mold smell when we looked at the house. (The carpet had just been freshly shampooed to show the house.) It was after we bought it and moved in that we noticed it. Before my husband installed the wood laminate floor, we bleached the entire concrete slab, as the mold had also seeped in to the concrete. Bleach did the job on that. Good luck. :)
Ever try cooking a meal in someone else's kitchen? sm
You know how to cook, but have a tough time finding where everything is kept in that kitchen so it takes a while longer.  You could cook the same thing in your own familiar kitchen in half the time.  This goes for MT, too.  It takes a long time, even for those of us who have been transcribing half our lives, to get used to new formats, new work type codes, new voices, and learning idiosyncrasies for each and every dictator.  It takes time--a few months or more.  Be patient, and the line counts will surely add up as you become more familiar with the account.
Kitchen appliance graveyard

In the midst of moving last weekend, I discovered my long forgotten kitchen appliance graveyard.  All the cool gadgets that I thought I HAD to have at the time that have long since moved into that cabinet.  I had three juicers dating back to the 80's, an ice cream maker, a sandwich maker, a George Foreman grill, a food dehydrator, and a the most recent one I got for Christmas, a smoothie maker.  Oh the humanity!  I have decided to resurrect some of them for fun and because I feel so guilty.  How about you all ?  Anyone suffer from this gadget collecting problem?

ants on the kitchen table
Anybody else have a problem with ants on the table.  We even fogged the house, used raid and still they come back.  Any suggestions?
Last year I purchased a Lasko 30" tall digital ceramic pedestal heater with remote for under (sm)
$80.00 at Home Depot.  Features include: Automatic temperature control, oscillate, timer, and high (1500W) and low (900W) power settings.  Assembling the base took less than 5 minutes. Kept me very warm last winter, and plan on purchasing another one for my upstairs. Cut down on my gas heating bill significantly. Great buy.
My supe puts NOTHING in an email

other than her little account update. She will NOT respond to an email (nothing in writing) to any questions at all -- she picks up the phone and calls.  I have sent her several emails with concerns -- NO RESPONSE -- but my phone will ring at home -- I guess I will start recording my phone conversations with her !!!

I have asked for a LONG TIME about my account "going bye bye", and because the work was no longer there. Only this week did she say that it had gone to VR -- she would not put that in writing, or even hint that the account was going by the way, and believe me, I have asked her where the work has gone. When you have been on an account for a long time, an MT knows when the works "dries up." Doesn't she?

So basically, the supe's responsibilities are to email account updates 2 or 3 times a day, beg for the MT to take on ANOTHER new account that she has been handed down to her team (to slow the MT down), beg for the MT to work WHEN SHE NEEDS YOU (not when you were scheduled to work -- because the overseas MT's was not going to work that day and she needs you, or ASR equipment was down), be team cheerleader in an email occasionally when you have made HER look good, take care of the little kids they have at home with them. That pretty well describes the supe on my team.

Hey, my family puts the FUN in dysFUNctional!
RadGuy, you could start a blog and publicly post your family's antics for the whole world to see. Just kidding.... It sounds as if a cruise or weekend getaway is in order!
Official policy puts it best . . .
from the 2002 AAMT Book of Style:

"Obscenities, profanities, and vulgarities do not belong in a patient's record unless they are part of direct quotations that are essential to a report."

In 20+ years of transcribing, mostly psychiatry, with, as one might imagine, a lot of profanity, I've always just typed whatever the clinician quoted the patient as saying, and have never had a complaint.

Good luck,

CTT

I use Scrubbing Bubbles, too. Windex in the kitchen.
Bleach with water and Lysol spray to disinfect.  I keep a backup can of Comet around in case I run out of everything else.  Pledge on the wooden kitchen table just for fun.  I don't like the kitty on the counters or table, so he slides across the slippery surface after I use Pledge.  Most entertaining.  And Brite to shine the kitchen floor so we can watch the dogs skittering around corners while playing with kitty.
Really? What's good flooring for the kitchen and bathroom?
I definitely need something that will hold up to water. I'm just so tired of redoing the flooring in this house. We've only been here nine years and I'm tired of always remodeling or redoing everything. This is the very last time.
Oh, my!. I HAVE been there, desk in kitchen while dishes pile up and so on.
The little ones, at least, from this distance are happy memories and much missed. It really does get a LOT easier, I promise, and sooner than you can imagine, up over your head in it all as you are. Keep taking lots of deep breaths.
digital kitchen timer and a scratchpad ....
I am always startled at how much tallying line count every hour or two keeps me focused. Some days just spread out vaguely and my line count suffers as I get distracted or restless.

The info your platform provides should be enough ... to keep some sort of a running tally.

I trust almost no one is still doing manual logs (best kept in Excell, imho), but yes, even with manual logs, a "bad" hour total can provide the seat-in-chair motivation to perform better next hour.

Taking breaks is a good idea -- but I admit I still spend a lot of time playing catch-up.

Ewww. Our house had nasty carpet throughout when we moved in.
We tore the carpet out of the kitchen and bathroom and put in a piece of cheap vinyl that didn't last. Then we tore that out and put vinyl squares down. More pricey but still didn't last as we wanted due to scuffing, scratching, sliding and lifting. The company we bought from went out of business, so nada for the warranty. We're going to do Pergot laminate next month. I've never done ceramic tile because I've lived in at least two houses where the floor tiles split and cracked. I don't know how well it would tolerate the constant parade of kids, dogs and cats.
You need to get the smell/urine enzymes out of the carpet and furniture - sm
The dog will just continue to go back to where he peeed (?) again and again because he smells his scent. I don't think neuturing him will make a difference in that respect. You need to go buy Nature's Miracle Odor & Stain remover. It's pricey but it does the job....I learned this by working at PetsMart years ago and by personal experience. You have to soak whatever it is the dog peeed on though and let it air dry, takes a couple days. You will have to decide on how to "contain" him until the smell is gone, either in a smaller area of the house, outside, whatever. You might want to seriously try training him to go outside. He never learned that he should NOT go inside so that behavior of him going wherever he wants in the house is going to be difficult if not impossible to change. You may want to call a professional legit dog trainer in the area and get their thoughts and suggestions. You are going to have a hard time modifying the dogs behavior, but with a LOT of persistance and consistency you can prevail. Good luck.
Not MT related - I need suggestions on getting the moldy smell out of carpet.
I have had the carpet professionally cleaned, but there is still that moldy smell from the carpet having gotten wet a while back from an overflowed washer. Anyone have any suggestions on what I can use to make the smell go away? I plan on ripping the carpet up at some point and redoing the floor, but not ready for that yet. In the mean time, now with the hot weather, the moldy smell is really obvious. Help!
Unless she has animals that constantly snag on the carpet or intentionally sm
dig their claws into the carpet, I have to beg to differ with you on the berber carpet. We LOVE ours. Have had it for 7 years with 3 cats, 4 dogs (not all at once) and we don't have any snags! I'm serious. I'm not sure what grade of carpet you are referring to, but we have not had any problems with our Berber. I also think it cleans very well with a steam cleaner once every 6 months or so. Our Berber still looks new with all of these pets we've had.

So, I do recommend Berber, though it is pricey.

There are a lot of other durable things on the market that she can look for and afford but I just had to say something about Berber because we just love ours.

Probably any kitchen gadget type place- Bed, Bath, Beyond,
I have had mine for years, about $10. I think I got mine at Lechters, don't know if they still exist though. But I am sure BBB would have it, who knows Wal-Mart probably does too.
Yep, 8 hrs in a hot kitchen on the burger broiler, at an amusement park.

In the kitchen having breakfast. Turned on the TV and Charlie Gibson was on
when it was after 9:00. The first building was smoking behind him and he was describing it, not yet realizing what was going on. Then the second plane glided into view, and thinking it was a small observation plane, I said - "Get back, you idi*t, you're too close!" Then it hit, of course, and Charlie processed it in his brain and announced what I couldn't get my mind around: "Then this was no accident."
Blue on the walls, textured olive green carpet,

Is anyone watching Hell's Kitchen? If you think MT is hard, watch this show. The abuse of the
wannabe chefs is second only to MT abuse by the nationals.  Really, to work in a kitchen in a restaurant seems the hardest job ever pressure-wise.  I say this after watching "The Restaurant" and "Hell's Kitchen" reality TV.  I wonder what the pay is to subject yourself to this agony and pressure.
Yard work, painting kitchen cabinets, sanding and priming

Doc is using software to do his own reports that puts the ® symbol after trade drug names and
I'm wondering if anyone is aware of a software program, maybe voice recognition, that does this? (I coudn't access the VR board to ask).  This is one doctor in a practice that I transcribe for and I usually do his transcription for him, but the last time I logged into their computer to send them their files, there were reports in his file that I didn't transcribe that have this ® behind the trade names.  I want to do a little research before talking to the practice.  TIA
