SE as in statutory employee at MQ nm
Statutory employee s/m
was statutory for years until MQ made us all go to regular employee status. The one thing I loved about this job was freedom and they really took that away when they set us up as regular employees.
I just took another job as a statutory employee and am working out my notice with MQ. Love, love, love it. Statutory is the best of both worlds for me since I don't need bennies. The PTO was nice, but the freedom is worth so much more.
means statutory employee...
The link someone gave above has a section on statutory employee (SE) but are still independent contractors
Doh! I thought SE was statutory employee. Sorry! NM

Statutory versus employee
Are there any advantages to being statutory versus an employee? Anyone out there working statutory who can help? Thanks!
What are the benefits of working as a statutory employee?

Statutory Employee vs. Independent contractor
I work for company "A" as an IC. I work on Dictaphone ichart platform. I make 9 cents a line. Good accounts. Good managers. I have been offered a job as a statutory employee with company B, still on dictaphone, still 9 cents a line. Is justifiable to make a lateral move to company B just for the sake of being an employee? Tell me pros and cons please! Thank you!
too many variants. are you employee or statutory? what office? what reports?
not my office. you have to work so many weekend hours per pay period but you can choose the hours.
You an IC, statutory employee or employee?
That designation, and/or forcing the IRS to designate you, can make a diff. Are you a corporation? Partnership? You need WAY more help than we can give you.
Question about SS - I am statutory employee and my employer withholds 7.5% for Social Securty - sm
I have only been a statutory employee for a couple of months (I was an employee with benefits with my prior company). My employer withholds 7.5% or "half" of the Social Security/Medicare 15% and I was told that will need to pay the other 7.5%. How does that work? Thanks in advance!
11 cpl as IC for 1 company, 13 cpl as an employee for another.
10 cpl for clinic work but same account for 14 years so it flies.
Spheris employee looking for better company.
Spheris just changed and is doing away with our primary accounts. All jobs now will be received per TAT, which means a drop in line count again. I've been with them almost six years, but seriously thinking about a change. I've gone thru all their changes, each one dropped my pay check; can't take many more of these.
I'm tired of being penalized because I forgot to put an "s" on the end of a word. I understand quality, but geesh, come on, be realistic! I'm tired of being put on accounts that I can't make my line count just because they're out of TAT. That's not my fault, that's their fault for taking on more accounts than they have MTs for. Sorry, I'll get off the pulpit.
I have searched the net and found so many companies; i.e. MedQuest; Spectra; MTC; RK Master; ALL Transcription, etc. Anyone have information, good/bad, about these or other companies? Any suggestions?
I make more than that as an employee for a small company ---
Maybe it is time to change to that?
I'm an employee at a medium-size MT company...
...I work at home yet I've had to buy my own equipment (computers, references, supplies), and now they want me to start making long-distance phone calls (to clients, the office) and state they will not reimburse me for those any long distance calls I make.
I'm not an IC, I'm an employee. This can't be right can it?
Or a corporate restructuring to head off lawsuit awards.

I'm talking corporate restructuring as in filing a new DBA soon, anticipating
bankruptcy and restructuring under a different corporate name. It's done all the time in the corporate world.
Terminated
I worked full-time for a group of docs for over 26 years, the last few being only as a contingent as I had officially "retired." But I covered all vacations, sick days, etc. It was a great part-time job. But I had to go in every day as we were still using tapes. The company got a new system and decided I was out. . . without even asking or telling me. And to think I was their ONLY Transcriptionist for years and years until they got so big they hired about 7-8 more transcriptionists. I tried working for several small companies but didn't get much work as they also were having a bad run of luck!
Today, January 21st, I finally decided to forget transcription. I sold my wav pedal and will sell my other stuff. It took me a long time to get to this point because I truly love transcription. . . .but you don't get paid for what you do and know. I had to purchase lots of my own equipment even though I worked for this company and was a salaried employee. Talk about cheap! That gets old and I finally decided enough was enough.
I love sewing. . . perhaps I'll go to Joann's and work for $7-8 an hour????
Good luck to you. Frankly, I personally believe transcription is definitely going down the tubes and will be similar to drafting, which my husband did, and is now an obsolete career. Already there is the techology that allows the docs to dictate, the words magically appear on the computer and all that will be needed are a few people to sit and proofread this stuff by the hour. How boring! Not to mention very "unlucrative." I just LOVE that made-up word! LOL!
Again, good luck to you in your job finding endeavors!

So sorry to hear about the loss of your job. I got sick of transcribing hassles years ago (I worked in doctors' offices). Then one day, I saw an ad for a medmal law firm who was looking for a Transcriptionist to train in legal. I got the job and have been working happily as a medmal legal secretary ever since. I hope that helps!
Not sure about if terminated
but I drew unemployment very briefly after Hurricane Katrina because I couldn't work for awhile...had to relocate to a place where I could get broad band service (everything was just a mess). I was an SE at the time. First I had to fight to even get the umempl..which I finally did get a little..like a little under $600. Then I had to pay it back with interest (because according to State, as an SE I wasn't eligible). They should have just told me upfront it was a loan! Check with your state before counting any chickens. Good luck to you.
Not for the ones about to draw from it. NM

Terminated
I don't know if any one out there have been in my situation, but I need some feedback. I was terminated from my job today because of production circumstances and they said that they would give me time to make my line count but obviously did not. I was just getting started and been with them since the 10th of last month. I am having a hard time dealing with this. Could some give me some insight to whereas dealing with this loss. I have a family to support as many of us do but I could really use some help. I have 2 years of experience and I needed to be pointed in a good direction from here. Also the company pay once a month and I have not got paid yet from last month.
If you were terminated for a
reason other than no work or low work, why would you even consider applying? They are going to have your information, so why even go through the humiliation?
#1 - Why?? #2 - If they terminated you,
why would they rehire you?
Get an attorney and have them draw one up for you. sm
It costs about $200 and well worth it!
just the luck of the draw
Some of the companies never replied at all after taking some of their extensive testing. You think at least they would get back to you after you submitted your testing and others that I sent resumes to just never responded. Guess I'll just keep on trying and at some time may find something. I'll keep watching the boards.
Contract terminated because got a second job
Have any of you had your contract terminated? I just need to vent b/c it really ticks me off. I have been working for this place and was not making any money. The most money I have made in a 2-week period with them is $300. They just do not have any work. Every time I expressed concern about my lack of workload, they would just respond with it is a little slow right now. They asked me did I need more work assigned, and I told them yes, and I actually started receiving less work. They were a small company so the work was not in a pool. You had to wait until the administrator decided to assign you a job. So I felt trapped within my house every day having to stalk my email to see if work had been assigned. I could not make any plans. I also felt that I got the worst dictators. I finally got fed up with my lack of money and got a new job with a larger company which so far have been wonderful. I emailed the other company to advise them I had gotten a new job, but would still like to work with them on a part-time basis and told them the amount of work I would like to receive. I did not receive an email back showing that she had even acknowledged me. I had training today from 11:30 to 1:30. She had assigned me a job this morning that was due by 1:53 today. I emailed to advise that I had a prior appointment and would not be able to complete the job and to please reassign. I receive an email back stating my contract had been terminated. That just ticks me off so bad. I was going to terminate my contract anyway once I had been working with the new company for maybe a month or so, but I wanted to be the one to terminate the contract. She did not state a reason for terminating my contract which I know she does not have to, but I really think it is because I told her I had gotten a second job. Anyway, I just really needed to vent some. I would love your comments on this situation. Thanks!
Terminated not termiated...sorry.

I draw my line and stick to it when looking
I had a set amount and would not accept less. I stayed at my current job at the time and looked and applied until I negotiated for the rate I wanted. I did not test or otherwise pursue a company without knowing pay rate and platform. I made a list of my priorities and would ask questions. I knew what my deal breakers were ahead of time and did not bat an eye at any of these places that didn't meet what I needed for the most part. In return for this, I work for a great company at the rate I wanted with awesome flexibility. They got a very dedicated Transcriptionist that will probably never leave as long as they have work for me to do.
I'd love to do it, but I can't draw a stick person.
Boy am I ever beat! Time to go to bed. I'll check back later. The dogs and I are just about cashed. Hubby is at work. Time to sleep and dream about the new city............
MAs take vitals, draw blood, give injections, etc.
PAs have the mostly the same authority as a doctor EXCEPT writing narcotic prescriptions they need their suopervising doctors signature. I used to work in a doctor's office as an MA for a PA. Hope this helps!!!
If you are applying with nationals, it is kind of luck of the draw I would
suspect. The national I work for did not conduct a background check. I know that some do, and some don't. I guess the severity of your crime would have a lot to do with it, or some companies may have a no tolerance policy altogether. If you are looking at local clinics or hospitals you could try explaining face to face, but I would not try to hide that fact from them as they would not look kindly on it if they were to find out on their own.
Most companies draw from the AAMT's standards and guidelines.

Every company is different -- I worked FT for one as an employee but worked a split shift - sm
So I never took breaks. I would work 5 hours, break for about 4 hours then do another 3. Another company I worked for did not care what hours you worked (IC) but wanted a min. amount of work each day, 500 for PT and 1000 for FT-- BUT they paid you by how many lines an hour you put out, the higher the lph the higher up the scale you made per line in pay; they have since changed everyone to a flat rate with incentive. But bottom line, if you are an IC it does not matter what hours you work, though many ask for a schedule and ask you to stick to it, they just want you to meet line requirements daily, i.e. 1000 per day, 1200 per day, whatever it is.
Excuse me but federal taxes are paid as employee by employee
The ONLY difference in IC is you pay the ENTIRE amount of the SS which is the 15.25%, as an employee you only pay 7.75%. And you can easily make up that difference in deductions. As an employee you just have someone else manage your withholdings and as an IC you do it yourself. I have much more usable income being an IC and not an employee and I am strict about putting aside what I need to. But everyone always says you have to pay your own taxes, well your employer does not PAY them for you -- except 7.75% of SS, they merely withhold it for you. As an IC you are the employer.
statutory
I know this has been asked before, but could someone please tell me the difference between statutory employee and just employee? TIA
statutory vs IC SM
Thanks for clearing that up, all this time I'm statutory and thought I was IC. So does that mean I could apply for partial unemployment??
statutory vs. IC sm
So if companies cannot dictate schedules to an IC, what about statutory employees? I haven't discussed any of this with my company in 5-7 years!! Now they suddenly need an update, wherein they want to demand a set schedule....
Statutory employees too?
Is the new pay plan for statutory/IC employees too? Cant you only switch to full time employee status twice a year, I think May and October or November.
statutory employees - MQ
When you have to take off, do you call in sick like you would a regular job? In the past, I have and they have been quite unreasonable if I needed to take a day off for sick or personal reasons. What upsets me is when there is no work, Im stuck, no work, oh well, but when I need to take off, I better be there, I better work or they have been quite nasty with me..What has been others response? What have others done when they needed to take off? Thanks for your response!
time off statutory
As they are quick to point out, as statutory you are NOT an employee and do not have empolyee benefits; they can't have it both ways, if you are IC and want to take off they really don't have a right to say anything; offices differ, but that's the bottom line.
Statutory status
When I worked statutory, they took out Federal, SS, and Medicare.
Any statutory employees out there?
I'll be starting a new job soon with a service as a statutory employee. I want to get on top of my tax situation now so that come April I won't get hit with a big bill from the tax man.
Any suggestions/guidelines for how much of each of my checks I should be setting aside for taxes? I know that my employer will be paying 1/2 of my Social Security taxes. What about the rest?
Thanks in advance for your help.
statutory status
I sent you an email.
Statutory, I guess
PT, no benefits, no paid vacation/holidays, etc. The only thing they do is withhold my state/fed taxes. I work hours and days specified by them.
Statutory status question....sm
if you are statutory status they take out federal, but not state taxes, is that correct? What about SS? Thinking of taking a job on statutory status. Thanks.
Statutory MT/Independent contractor
Does anybody know of companies that still hire Statutory or independent contractors? Since I take the standard deduction on my personal taxes I can no longer deduct my MT expenses and that's a major ouch. Thanks for any help.
question for statutory workers
What percentage would you recommend setting aside from each check to cover your taxes? thanks.
Unemployment
Each state is different. In Oregon you have to declare what wages you earn and can only earn about half of what your unemployment benefit is and then they start taking dollar for dollar off. So if you collect anything it will be very little. Just be honest as they will catch up with you if you are not and in some counties it is a felony to not declare all your earnings or to collect unemployment when you are not eligible. They match up SSN and sometimes it takes a while but they will catch you. But your state should have a home page and you should be able to read all about it.

Unemployment
As long as you were not terminated due to misconduct or stealing there shouldn't be a problem for the reason for termination Also as long as you are not considered an emplolyee while doing the transcription. Just because you were on probabtion is not a reason for not being able to claim unemployment. You will collect your benefits on what you made prior to this job, your last 5 quarters of earnings last two quarters of 2005 and first three of 2006. However, whatever you make as an IC will go against whatever your unemployment benefit is -- i.e. if they state that your benefit is $300 a week then you cannot earn more than $150 before they start taking dollar for dollar off. Also you need to be actively looking for a job and available to take a job when it comes along and that might mean giving up your IC. You may have to fight for your benefits, attend a hearing, etc. But as long as you did not quit, did not steal or do anything else misconduct wise, you can file -- at least do it what do you have to lose. I don't know what your earnings have been in the past five quarters and that will determine what your benefit will be. Good luck. Don't let them intimidate you but they could pull the transcription if they get upset. Good luck. You can probably go online and go to your state to see what and how you can file.
unemployment
You don't pay to unemployment, do you? That is something that the employer pays and therefore they are going to fight it, but I would think if you lost your job, you should be able to get it.
unemployment
After hurricane, I had to move to another state but I had to file unemployment in La. b/c I worked for a hospital there from my home. Normally, you have to have paperwork documenting your layoff. Go on line/Google unemployment rules for Pa. You can often file for it on-line. Best of luck. I've been there twice in my life.
