Not sure my last post worked or not. Hourly rates fluctate around the country, however, in South Florida, the average hourly rate is 12 an hour and then each company/hospital then uses their own benefits/production bonus programs.

I think your hourly rate pays for whatever they want you to do.
If they want you to answer phones or sweep the floor or transcribe office notes or give shots or any combination of jobs.
They are paying for your time.
If it were me, I would have a separate hourly rate that

Nothing. Never take line rate for editing. Take hourly only.
You will never make any money by the line editing if you are doing true editing.

I just started working for Soft Script in Calif. as an editor for 0.05 per line. I found this was not enough money for me (even though I accepted it to get my foot in the door) and talked to the senior vice-president Joann who gave me a great hourly rate. They must do this for all their editors. Today QA, tomorrow the rest of the company!!!! Can anyone tell me more good things about Soft Script and your experiences???? I am jazzed and enthused to learn more about this comapny and look forward to hearing from you all.

I think you would have to charge an hourly rate for this type of work.
If you are working at an hourly rate in a hospital setting, then you are
going to be in for a shock when you go to production rates. Most of the in-house positions were farmed out years ago. If you were lucky to secure an in-house position for this long, consider yourself blessed.

so because of how you are paid (not an hourly rate) you don't get OT, especially if you are an IC.

did years ago, I always learned that 5 characters equals a word, then try that. 140 lines an hour, you want to at least try for 200, 250 or more is obviously better. You have to figure it out. How much do you make per line. If you are making 8 cents per line and typing 140 lines per hour then you are making 11.20 per hour. Is that what you want to make or can you make it easier by working for somebody else and getting paid by the hour? Thats a question you have to answer.
does anyone know how to calculate food
quantities for a party? i need to know how to calculate enough side dishes (like baked beans, hash brown casserole, etc). we will be ordering the main dish but trying to save money by doing the other stuff ourselves. right now there are about 80 people (about 95% are adults) on the guest list. thanks for any info! 
Depends on how they calculate
Sometimes they use an accrual system which means that even though you invoice in December and get paid in January they will accure that as a charge for 2006 so it could he higher than what you were anticipating. One of my accounts did that to me but I went by my calculations and never had a problem with the IRS. Now if they are 2000 less than what you feel you made, it might be because they calculated what you received in January of 2006 as being in 2005.

but did we get a check or not???? And if we didn't would we have ever known??? No. So take your two cents or $130 or whatever the heck you got and shove it where the sun don't shine. I have thought about everything and I am still at Medquist and I like it. That is great that you quit, obviously you are a normal human being. trying to figure cell phone plans (pay as you go type)....do i divide minutes by dollars, or dollars by minutes to get the cents per minute...
and more so, how does one know which way to divide other things of similar nature (not necessarily dollars vs minutes).

im new at this, worked for a local cardiology office for 1 year as a medical secretary.then got this at home transcription job, lowest pay with a 1200 line a day minimum, it has been very hard, if i made more money i wouldnt mind it. when you guys were new, where did you get your foot in the door?

Transcribing while in a car?
Does anyone have any experience with this? My family is involved in different activities that involve traveling two or three times a week with at least an hour's commute one way or more. I hate to sit and twiddle my thumbs while traveling when there is work that could be done. Is it possible? Have to download internet files from my national. Could I do that with a cell phone? Any help at all would be much appreciated!

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to transcribe from a CD and use a USB foot pedal to play back? I have been asked to transcribe a documentary and I am not very savvy when it comes to things like this (applications), so any help would be appreciated.

A hospital where I worked long ago (in a galaxy not far away) had a hybrid pay system- a basic hourly rate plus incentive bonus for production over a certain amount. I think this is the fairest way, because sometimes I'm fast and sometimes I'm slow, but I'm always accurate. My first transcription supervisor back in the dark ages said "No one who reads that report will know or care how many lines you type per hour. They only know what that report looks like". I still believe that.

Though there are a lot of variables you haven't told us, on face value I'd say hourly. I've done both, and hourly has paid better.
With MT you usually can't transcribe hour after hour nonstop (or at least you won't be doing so for many years if that's your pattern). Therefore, when figuring your actual earnings you need to include time you have to rest between transcribing to get your true hourly earnings.
As an MT this scenario is typical at so many companies: Get up early. Check for work. Do what's left. Get 7 great jobs that have you flying along thinking you're going to make a ton today. Suddenly run into Dr. X, ESL from hell, and watch your great production day go to pot. Fight for jobs at end of payperiods. Bounce around on accounts. Cry a lot as you worry about your bills.
With hourly lead position, you've suddenly opened up your possibilities. There will always be work for you. You now have more than just MT on your resume. You can also get up and go to the bathroom during work without worrying that it's cutting into your lines per hour. You may work more than 40 hours a week, but it will be actual work, not sitting there waiting for jobs to trickle in, not resting between transcription periods.
It may be stressful at times, but so is MT when you're worrying about meeting bills and having a consistent paycheck when work volumes fluctuate. It's also an investment in your future. You can possibly grow from there to be supervisor, recruiter, trainer, or use your management skills to GET OUT of this field and get into something else.
I've done both in many different ways, and would recommend the hourly.
