platform called CPSI
Has anybody ever worked in this program? It is easy to learn? Is is MT-friendly? Is it Word-based? Any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Smartype should work in any word based platform - sm
If Emdat is a web based platform, then it won't work. Fighting that (on Chartscript) myself right now and hate it!
CPSI
I work in CPSI and have mixed feelings. It is a Word based platform so therefore if you use autocorrect it will work with the program. however, you can't add entries in the program itself as it will change your normal. Have to add them in your own Word. All the usual Expanders will work with it as well.
In my ever so humble opinion, it is cumbersome and antiquated. You have to enter a lot of info and look ups for patients are a bear if the correct number is not provided. I am not a huge fan, but it is certainly not the WORST platform I have ever used. It beats out Meditech hands down, but sucks next to ChartScript that I also work in and love! HTH!
CPSI
I work in CPSI also. I also liked Chartscript much better. The one thing I dont like about CPSI is that they dont allow you to go between reports such as Discharge summarys and H&Ps. We have a couple of doctors that tell us to take the diagnoses off the discharge summary and put on a swingbed H&P or take a diagnosis of the H&P and put on the discharge summary. This makes have to go completely out of the report we are in, pull up the new report, copy and then go back out and bring up the other and paste.
With Chartscript and I know of other ones you just have to bring up the reports within each other and copy and paste right there. A lot less hassle.
Once you figure out CPSI you can do it, it is just cumbersome.
MTSO with platform versus no platform (big message)
If a MTSO advertises that the MT works in MS Word and sends dictation by FTP, does this usually mean there will be no demographic/doctor database and the demographics will not be autopopulated?
I got into a mess with a small company (got out real quickly too). I was required to print out daily email copies of the doctors' office patient schedules (which were barely legible) and type in all information. I spent more time hunting for the correct patient through pages and pages of these schedules. Then I had about 25 pages worth of doctor's names that I would have to go through to find the attending, referring, etc. A total waste of time as I didn’t get paid for that.
I wish MTSO would give more information as to what platform they use (if any). Proprietary software is such a generic, totally useless description. Would they buy a new car that listed, "Car has gasoline operated motor?"
And for Pete's sakes, why so secretive about the pay? Give a ballpark figure. Just say, pay is between 7-12 cpl depending on skill, testing, etc. Tell me if you pay for spaces, headers, etc. It would save them time because I wouldn’t even apply for a 7 cpl job.
Before I spend an hour or two testing, I need more information from a company to be sure it is compatible for my needs. If the MTSO would spend a little time on their website detailing their platform, how they send/receive files, pay rates, how line rate is determined (spaces/no spaces) employee/IC/SE status, minimal line count, whether work pools consist of 100s of doctors, or smaller pools with 25-50 doctors etc. Having all this information on their website would save them time and the MTs time. Phoenix Medcom has a really good layout describing pretty much everything an MT would want to know before testing with them. I am just tired of testing with a company and then finding out the job wasn’t exactly suited to my needs.
Platform versus non-platform (templates)?
I've been working for MTSOs for years now, using their templates which sometimes cause productivity problems (macro issues, etc). I'm wondering if productivity is increased when working on a structured platform, such as one that a national company provides for its transcriptionists? I've never used a platform, but it would seem that all one needs to do is straight type onto the screen and the platform program takes care of margins, page breaks, etc?
Any thoughts (as well as companies who are hiring who use platforms) would be appreciated. Thanks
smartype
are you able to put in your own and go with speedtype.com or abbreviate.com? i dont care for the smartype.
im thinking about purchasing speedtype instead and delete smartype that my old company had me download.
smartype
I've never used anything but Smartype and I love it. I doubt I'd ever change.
Does anyone use SmarType with XP?? Thanks so much. nm
.
Smartype for me
I have used both Instant Text and Smartype. Some people love Instant Type, but I couldn't deal with the learning curve. I stuck with Smartype -- much easier to use -- and I saw an increase in productivity right away. I had to get an Expander and was also contemplating which one to get. I decided to get both at the same time, do a 30-day trial, and send back the one I didn't want. That was about 5 years ago. I really like Smartype and don't plan on changing to anything else.
SMARTYPE
Chill!! These people are trying to help you!! Common sense would be to get in touch with Joe at Smartype (I have his #/address) OR get in touch with Stedman and simply ask them. If both Stedman and SmarType are putting out a "combined" product like this, THEY can answer your question correctly.
Smartype
I am new to Stedman's Smartype and I am having a problem. When I am starting a new sentence, the word should be capitalized, but when I hit the spacebar it inserts the word without capitalization. Anyone know why? And how to fix it? Thanks!
IT or Smartype
I have both but I could never get used to IT. To me the IT software is a complete waste. I like Smartype but I hate when it locks up on Word 2003 and actually eats the text. I have found that if I save often as we should do anyway and not have too much running Smartype doesn't lock up that often. I have heard others rave about IT. I guess it depends on the MT. I hate IT. Sorry I ever loaded it.
Smartype will not according to sm
DSG -Dictation Services Group they are still listed on page 1 of MTStars. Jobs section. You can email them. I think AL the plateform makers should take this in consideration for sure.
Smartype
If you are in ExText using Smartype you can add smart words and smart phrases by hitting CTL3. CTL2 gives you preferences, CTL4 is modify smart word spelling, CTL5 is delete smart word, and CTL6 is modify smart word position. You have to save the longer phrases for to put in when you aren't in ExText. Just save it to Notepad, then copy them into a regular word doc and go through the addition to smart block procedure. This has worked great for me.
None of this is in the documentation for Smartype. I just found them accidentally last year, after months of writing down phrases and words to add after work every day! This way you can just add it as you go.
Good luck!

I used Smartype for DOS.
Now I am using Word and so far only use autocorrect. When I used Smartype I used the words, blocks, plus had whole reports stored in mine called Smartmacros. Then I set up a smartword to play the macro. I have never used Smartype with Word, so I do not know if there is anything similar.
smartype
I had tried it and it didn't work very well. I didn't stay at the job -- only a few weeks. I disliked that platform. It was just horrible.
How can I get Smartype to
It is a shame that I can't get Smartype to work with Emdat because I think it would really help my production so much. Thanks
Smartype
You basically just download it to your system and follow the directions for adding and expansion of your macros.
It may not make you a speed demon although some say it increases their productivity substantially. One thing it does do is save you wear and tear on your hands and thus is a great morale booster in the process.
Face it, if your hands feel like h..., you are not a happy camper right?
I downloaded a trial version of ShortHand and it was amazing although very expensive, $100 for a license.
No it was Smartype...sm
I was working for Allstate Transcription. I no longer work there.
I use Smartype. I like it. ...nm

Smartype
Thanks, I was afraid of that. I love Smartype and would hate to have to give it up. I like it much better than InstanText also.
Smartype
I have EditScript Verson 8. My Smartype does not function. The very first toolbar with File, Edit, Tools, Smartype will not allow you to select "Enable" or anything but the File button. Is there a method to getting it to function? I have tried re-installing the EditScript program as well as the Smartype, but it still does not work.
Smartype
I had the same problem with Escription 8 and Smartype. I just found out that if I created a right-click floating toolbar when I was out of EditScript and in Word then that toolbar with Smartype shows up and I can access it. I was so glad when I found that. Good luck
Smartype
I have the same exact problem. Will you please tell the the steps on how you create a right-click floating tollbar in Word? Thanks.
Smartype
Hi, Open word and help for directions in creating a custom toolbar. After I did step 4 there was a small floating toolbar. I then clicked/dragged my Stedman's icon from the top toolbar to the floating toolbar and didn't do the other steps. Do this while you are not in EditScript.
The help should look like this:
Create a custom toolbar
1. On the Tools menu, click Customize.
2. Click the Toolbars tab.
3. Click New.
4. In the Toolbar name box, type the name you want.
5. In the Make toolbar available to box, select which template (template: A file or files that contain the structure and tools for shaping such elements as the style and page layout of finished files. For example, Word templates can shape a single document, and FrontPage templates can shape an entire Web site.) or document to make the toolbar (toolbar: A bar with buttons and options that you use to carry out commands. To display a toolbar, press ALT and then SHIFT+F10.) available in, and then click OK.
Click the Commands tab.
Do one of the following:
Add a button to the toolbar
Click a category in the Categories box.
Drag the command you want from the Commands box to the displayed toolbar.
Add a built-in menu to the toolbar
In the Categories box, click Built-in Menus.
Drag the menu you want from the Commands box to the displayed toolbar.
When you have added all the buttons and menus you want, click Close.
EXText and Smartype (sm)
I have a few questions and would like to be able to e-mail with someone who may be able to help. I'm using EXText and Smartype. The smartline will not allow me to see what is underneath the text, such as headings within the document. I have to keep hitting the ESC key to turn ST off so I can see where I am at in the document to be able to type under the heading.
Another issue I have is that my document is running off the page and not wrapping around. In Word under VIEW, if I select Web Layout, it's a nice view and everything is on the page; however, when I do anything else, like Ctrl J to get back to the demographic screen in EXText, it jumps back and I have to start all over again. Any help would truly be appreciated. I hope that I have made my questions clear for someone to understand them. Thanks for any help.
Smartype and other expanders
Does anybody know how to export Smartype stuff into other word expanders?
If so, what are the easiest/best ones to export into?
If you use Smartype you will have problems
but I don't think you use it, do you? I haven't heard you mention it before. There is a problem in Word 2003 that conflicts with Smartype that is not in any previous Word version.

Smartype/Word
I do too.
Smartype/Word
I use Alt A to jump to the {} field, if I understand you correctly. Don't know that that will help you.
Smartype/dictionary
If I buy Stedman's Smartype, do I still need to buy the dictionary?
Smartype - please read and help !!
So I could actually get by without downloading the Stedmans dictionary right away. I'm trying to get set up and keep costs down. What about all the reference books? Is the info just as easily attainable online?
I have used both Smartype and Shorthand - sm
I like them both, but Smartype has a lot preprogrammed into , i.e. drug names, syndromes, diseases, etc. With ShortHand and autocorrect, you have to program it all in. You can find lists on-line though and download them into Shorthand and combine all your dictionaries which is a very nice feature. Smartype only allows you to chose 1 dictionary and you cannot merge or import lists in, only enter things 1 at a time into the dictionary you chose to use (your own or theirs). I think there is a distinct advantage though to using a word Expander especially if you are not a fast typest. Shorthand is reasonably priced and MTStars sells something compable to Shorthand called Flashtype which I believe is even cheaper. Plenty of options, just need to pick one to fit your pocketbook. There is InstantText too, but that is pricey too (same as Smartype).

Smartype into ShortHand? How?
Regarding pulling all my abbreviations over into ShortHand, has this worked for anybody, even for all the SmartBlocks? If so, could you please tell me how it was accomplished? I'm sure many of us would like to know. (I have also posted this below in answer to "I don't think you understand what a SmartLine is.")
As I understand it, you cannot pull txt file abbreviations out of Smartype (Windows version), because Smartype (Windows version) is in a machine language, and ShortHand will not import machine language; it will only import txt files of various kinds.
Any thoughts on this matter?
Thank you all for any help you can give.
Smartype in WP or MS Word?
Hi, again,
My husband (and Resident Tech Support) just asked if when you converted from ST to SH you were using ST in WP or MS Word.
Smartype with MS Word
Smartype is not compatible with MS Word 2003. I used it for a very short time and it would freeze constantly or spontaneously backspace and erase my entire document. This wasn't an infrequent problem, this happened every two minutes. If you just purchased this, Stedmans may give you a refund if you contact Customer Service.
Smartype should keep up with changes in upgrades, not the other way around.

Smartype and Word
go to www.productivitytalk.com. I too am a Smartype user, though have not tried it with Word 2003 as of yet. I just googled your question and others are having this same problem. Check out the forum.
Smartype Problems
This may sound like a dumb question, but I have to ask. Does anyone have trouble when using Smartype with MS Word 2003? Once in a while when I hit the backspace key, it starts scanning like it's doing a spellcheck. I can't get it to stop once it starts. It's driving me nuts and making me not want to use the Smartype at all. I was really hoping to pick up the pace with an expander, but with this happening, it's just slowing me down.
Smartype - this is the old version, not the one - sm
that works with MSWord or regular Word Perfect. It is hard to come by, got mine on ebay years ago, love it though. Took me forever to get it to work with XP but I figured it out and it is a lifesaver.
ShortHand and Smartype
Between the two, did you get your speed back quicker with SH or ST?
Also, how did you ever get used to Smartype. I was down to a snail's crawl with that program.
shorthand and smartype
I got my speed back quicker with shorthand. I really do not use the Smartype like I used to, as I am typing radiology full-time now and I love ShortHand program, because I type in sentences and then just hit a couple of letters and it will type the 1-4 sentences for me. I found it took some time to get used to the smartype, but I also liked that program and I refer to it for correct spelling of words during the day if need be. It can slow you down at first, but I was determined to let it do the work for me.
Chartscript and Smartype
Hi, I lurk here, and I need some help. Been an IC for 12 years, using Smartype for almost 10 years I think. I have SEVERE CTS and could not do my job without ST.
Just found out my client who's over 80% of my pay for 12 years now is moving us over to Chartscript. I know older versions of Chartscript would work with ST, but what about now? I'm just terrified that I am going to have to quit because I will lose all my abbv's, and my hands just can't take rebuilding a new set of them. I am feeling very SOL.
javascript:editor_insertHTML('text','')
I'm hearing a lot of "local" gloom and doom about this. Does anyone have any advice? Encouragement? Ideas?
Thanks everyone. MUCH appreciated.
ExText and Smartype
It sounds like you have the Smartype line floating in the page. You can reset this (not while in ExText, but just when in Word) to be at the bottom of the page. It can be done from the options menu when you are not in ExText.
If it is going back to a different view, that is probably the default view set up by your company in ExText for that client. Haven't had that problem before.
Good luck.
PWM
Does anyone use Stedman's Smartype?
nm
Smartype is also $200 bucks.
Is there an Expander that works well that a poor person can afford? Sheesh.
Smartype and Meditech
Does anyone use Smartype with Meditech? I have smartype, but the last program I was using had an expander. I was going to sell my Smartype and now I've been moved to Meditech. Should I install it? Is it worth it?
Love my Smartype!!!!
It will retain whatever formating that you use when you create the block or whatever format you are typing in. Never used ShortHand so cannot compare. However, only shortcoming is that it will only work in Word, will not work with most other platforms.
Yes it will! Love my Smartype!
:)
