According to the Department of Labor, in 2006 there were 98,000 people in the US working at Medical Transcriptionists. AAMT (now AHDA)has less than 7000 members, which means they represent less than 10% of the medical transcriptionists in the US. Since they're the ONLY organization that can "certify" a medical transcriptionist, there are many MTs who are not certified and will never be certified. They may not even be aware of AHDI.
As an MTSO and an MT for over 36 years, I was certified at one time. It didn't make any difference in pay or quality of work. I still would rather have an experienced MT who takes pride in the quality of their work than a new MT who may have the CMT but no experience.
Unfortunately, the support of AHDI in sending work offshore has hurt the American MT. So much for an organization that was designed to HELP the American MT.
