I have to differ with you on the CC-A comment. CC-A is a crediential designed for new coders. testing for CC-S is not recommended until you have actual coding experience. You can read about that on the AHIMA website. It will tell you that 3-5 years of experience is recommended before taking the CC-S exam. I work at a very, very large teaching hospital with a level 1 trauma center, and we hire CC-As. CPC credentials are the ones hospitals don't usually hire. That particular credential is more geared toward outpatient coding only -not inpatient. It may be day surg or something but generally hospitals need inpatient coders! That being said, it is not easy to get into the field of coding but obviously can be done! I did it after transcribing for 27 years and only a CC-A, classes taken at a community college and costing no where even in the neighborhood of $7600.
