Bot Spamming

“Bots” (derived from Robots), are small pieces of code/programs written to do automated tasks on the web or even on your computer without your notice. Most of the viruses and Trojans work using different bots (or combination of bots). On the web, constructive example of bots are search engine bots that come and spider/index/add your site pages to their database (that will appear on the search result pages) e.g. Yahoo Bot and Google Bot. On the other hand, spammer bots have been developed that can be used for Unsolicited advertising in Chat Rooms, News Groups, Forums, etc etc. There are number of Yahoo and MSN CHAT bots developed by Spammers to Post links and Advertisements in hundreds of Chat rooms without any human effort by a few clicks, same is the case with forums and newsgroups.

Since, these bots perform automatic postings/tasks, how to control them? Do something that humans can understand only. Text within images is not readable by ANY means so far by any Bot. So why not do something that involves a read/listen and enter the exact text in the textbox to verify yourself as a human before performing any specialized task on a site.

In 2000, the CAPTCHA project was launched to fight against such bot Spammers. Now almost every large site over the internet is using this technology to keep Spammers away from the sections on their sites where automated tasks can be performed e.g. Yahoo, Hotmail and Google, Images can be different, text patterns and formats could be different on those images as well, but the main theme remains the same “Enter the characters in the box as shown in the Image” to verify yourself as a human capable of reading the images which bots can’t do.
