Before you sign up for Vonage, read this

I signed up with Vonage a few weeks ago. I have 2 phone lines and signed up both. The verification process was only completed on 1 phone number, but they immediately charged me 49 dollars for both phone numbers. A day or 2 later I received 2 modems in the mail, although 1 modem was supposed to be good for 2 phone lines.

When I called Vonage to cancel service on the number I had not verified, they kept me on the line so long I put my little head on the desk and considered an alcoholic beverage.

While the quality of the service is great - crisp and clear – the service does not work with dial-in dictation. The dictation continued to play after I raised my foot from the pedal. Also, if I placed my foot back on the pedal immediately after raising it, the dictation would not play, I had to wait a few seconds.

I was disconnected 3 times while working. I lost work one of the times and therefore lost that money.

When I called to totally cancel service, it was a very long process, but I was told I had to stay on the line to get a verification number or I would not get a refund. It took AGES – or so it seemed.

If I had searched mtstars before I signed up, I would not even have called Vonage, as others have noted some of these problems.

Make the sign very simple to read and put it in a very visible area
such as over the doorbell if you have to.

Some younger kids may not be able to read a lengthy sign.

Maybe "NO CANDY HERE" will work.

I know having the porch lights out does not work for my house either but whenever we came across a house with a sign I would have to tell the kids since some of them can't read yet to pass that house up.
Can you use a plus sign for hyper and minus sign for hypo?

That is true, when you sign up you sign up from the
day your former insurance terminated. Then it is on a month to month basis.
In 12 years of MT'ing I've never re-read an entire chart. Edit/read as I type. nm

Yes, I read your post, and I just re-read it, and I've copied and pasted for you in case

you've forgotten your own words! Your post above is 100% different "flavor" to it, now all positive and cheery! Your first post was 100% doom and gloom every which way, including "raining on your parade", and "if you want to go forward"...God, sounds like she's talking about jumping into oncoming traffic! Here is your quote:

My first boss (the one who hired me as a new grad) gave me some words of wisdom that I haven't forgotten. She said that transcribing at home with small children NEVER works under any circumstance. Either the work will suffer or the parenting will suffer.

****

How can the word "NEVER" in caps be interpreted in any positive way? You took about 8 paragraphs to cover every aspect and completely dash this poor woman's dream.  I'm not blind, I'm not talking about day care at all, I'm talking about the total negativity of your original post! You know exactly what I'm talking about, cause you added some sugar to your second version! And that's much nicer than the first!

Oh I've read that site and continue to read it...sm
I agree...much motivation there. I have tried to quit numerous times in the past and did successfully quit when I was pregnant for the first time many years ago but I have never managed to summon up the strength or resolve to stay quit. Thus the "need" for a financial investment in my efforts. It somehow makes it more motivational to know that I have $$$ invested in this effort over and above the $$$ saved on cigarettes.
Who had time to read?LOL I only get a chance to read This Old House once in a while. (nm)

I didn't read the other posts but just read this
My daughter got pregnant at 17, said she wanted an abortion but BF didn't. I have a wonderful 2-1/2 yo grand daughter that I don't think I could live without...and now, guess what? I don't. I have custody of her. She was dropped off on my door, I got court ordered temporary custody and final custody hearing in a month.

I'm single with no family support. I had just taken a new MT job one month before this happened and they have been wonderful during my adjusting to being a mom again and I hope I can resume a normal schedule by next week.

I'm passing no moral judgments or giving moral advice. The situation is what it is. My prayers are with everyone involved.
Definitely an eye-opening read. Having my teens read it, too. nm

With a $ sign, yes it is...without, it...
is only 7-1/4 100ths.  Decimals.  Get it?????  The whole number without the decimal isn't dollars and cents.  It's just a number.
She has no sign that says that but obviously you do.
She has worked in nothing but the best behavior. She kept her chin up and kept morale up while she was working way too many hours with way too little time off.

I dont know where you come off saying that other than thinking that you must have that sign on YOUR back. Don't transfer your stuff to someone else. Have a nice night.
Well it's just the way I am. I sign my name to almost SM

everything I post. I'll admit I've gone anonymous a few times, but it is rare. I'm just not going to do it. I stand behind anything I say - if it's wrong, then I made a mistake, I wasn't trying to hornswoggle anybody.

It is easy to see the culprit behind these MTs who can't make any money. You hear people talking about "platforms" and searching for demographics, etc. That's the problem.

I work for somebody for whom I am a source of income, not a cost center. The faster I am, the more we both make.

I do use my Expanders - a lot - and I've used the same shortcuts for years. But the main thing is that I work in Word without worrying about how some unit secretary is going to pull up the report I just typed. The company I work for isn't there to make sure the consultant on 4E can see the work quickly without shuffling papers. They're there to produce a fast and accurate medical record - period.

That other stuff is for the hospital to worry with, and the hospital I work for has some kind of system where my Word documents go in their system in batches. I wouldn't pretend to know what that is, LOL, but I'm not crippling along on a program that was designed for everybody but ME, and that's what happens at these big companies. They have to have a selling point, and that seems to be it.

"Here, let us do your transcription. Here's how it works. The MT types your report, it goes into the chart electronically. And the stuff is all there for the data miners, too, so everybody can like us!" This was true for Dictaphone, Lanier, everybody. They all had to have an angle for everybody in the hospital and the MT was left sucking hind teat, as we say out in the country.

Been there and done that and would only go back if I had absolutely no other choice. As much as I love this profession, I couldn't figure out why people gripe about not making money so much - and then I went to work for a national and found out real quick.

My sign is Leo...nm

Before you sign

I don't know what they are charging you but I talked to several before I went with Trinity Debt Management whose name was given to me by my church and they were the cheapest.  But I still ended up filing a Chapter 13 because of a divorce that cost me so much I could not pay the bills.  But I did start with them and they were very nice.  It cost $50 to start the program but their monthly maintenace fees were way cheaper than the other major ones I talked with.  Some wanted as much as $100 to $150 per month to manage my account that was a payment to a bill.  But I chose the Chapter 13 repayment program and pay $300 a month for three years to the courts and they pay it out and the balances are then wiped clear.  I only had to pay partial attorney fees, mainly filing fees, the rest was put into the monthly fee.  I still feel bad but at least am paying something.  But there is nothing you can do when you go from two paychecks to one and doesn't feel the bills are his responsibility.  Good luck.  Just thought I would mention them.

she did sign for 3 yrs but if we all....nm

No, and don't ever sign...
Any type of contract or agreement that has that clause in it! Be aware!
They probably won't sign

They will probably hee and haw and not sign a contract or they put in whereas for "cause they can terminate the service immediately" or with 15 to 30 days notice they can terminate the service without cause.  So with or without a contract they will terminate her services when they find someone else if that is what they are doing.   Who knows I could be wrong and will probably get my goose cooked for working now for 15 years without contracts and have to eat my words.   Time will tell.

I would sign....but
I won't spend $2 to do it!! Rip....
Where do I sign up?
I would sure like to meet you in person...I've been an MT for 42 years (started at age 17 when transcription was still lumped in under "Medical Secretary."  I have worked in all venues of transcription...clinic, MTSO and legal...but never found the time to actually get all the credentialing an MT needs in the current environment.  After "proving" myself, I was promoted to supervisory level and my greatest pleasure was "helping" other MTs as I had been helped in my early years.  If you ever implement your "program", let me know because I'll sign up anytime/anywhere!!
You don't want to sign it off any other way or ...
...you will not get credit for your lines. Use the unknown patient MRN, type it and sign if off. Follow your company/client's specifications on how to accomplish that.
I do want to sign it off
because it is a personal letter and he does not want it on the hospital system.  I would be typing it in Word and be paid separately. He has quite a few of these he wants done.  The point is he doesn't want the lines in the system.    Thank you.
Then don't sign it
Don't agree to it and don't sign it and if you do, then don't whine about it.
That would be the first sign of
epicondylitis (better known as tennis elbow). This is
very common in repetitive movement in the hand/wrist, which of course all MT's apply themselves to day after day. I experienced that for the first time in my MT life 1-1/2 years ago, very painful. After viewing articles via Internet, this totally alleviated the problem as follows. One hour before starting work, take 600 mg ibuprofen, buy a tennis elbow brace or 2, I just had it in the left hand, you wear it approximately 1/2 inch "below" the epicondyle everyday constantly that you work...within at least 4 weeks, you will find that you no longer have the pain, thus can now stop the ibuprofen, but continually wear the tennis elbow brace while working to avoid recurrence of the problem.
Vonage
Any of you out there using Vonage?  It seems like a really good deal, 25.00 a month for unlimited (opposed to the 110. we pay for Verizon).  Anyone using it to connect to hospitals? and do they say anything if you are using 8 hours solid for work?  I see they have a small business plan for around 50.  If any of you have it, how is the connection and the sound quality.
I have been using Vonage for almost
a year now. I didn't get the business plan and I didn't tell them what I was using it for, and they have never said anything about it. I do dial into a hospital and have used it on a personal basis. The sound quality is good. I have been disconnected a few tiimes in bad weather but not for very long and only maybe twice since having it. Go for it, I think you'd like it. Good luck!
Vonage
I would like to get Vonage but I have two extension phones in my house and they told me it would only ring on one phone and not on the extensions. Any suggestions?
It is not against the law for Vonage as they are
However, for the other LD companies i.e., Sprint, Verizon, etc., it is not allowed. I also used my local carrier only to be notified several times that I could not use it for this type of work and if I continued they would disconnect my service! I know use Vonage and have had no problems.
I use Vonage
Only VoIP plans don't put a minute limitation on "unlimited" long distance, i.e, 5000 minutes a month or whatever.  So far no problems.  I still get nervous about it though because they could crack down at any time like the other traditional LD companies started doing.
Vonage
I use Vonage.
I am using Vonage
My husband and I are using Vonage. It was a handle to get going but now seems to be smooth sailing. The only problem is if we loose our cable modem then our phones go down as well. Also if you have problems more than likely you will be speaking to someone in India, so I do not know if it is based out of India or what.
Vonage here
Vonage has worked well for me.  I pay about $27 a month on the residential plan and have had it for about 4 months.  I know some people have had problems with getting disconnected a lot, but I haven't.  It must depend on where you live.  I use a high volume of LD for MT and haven't had any troubles (so far).
Vonage
I have had such little trouble with Vonage that I sometimes forget that is what I am using.  They are great, no problems.
Vonage is
works great! love it...and hubby likes the bill ;-)
Vonage
I had problems from the beginning with Vonage and working on the internet. I finally had to take a loss and switch - went over to MCI. The rate is ok - and your first month is free (26.99) and then every 6 months you get a coupon to send in with your bill for $26.99 - so I guess it is like getting two months a few for free - anything as long as my phone works.
Vonage
Mine used to just keep going when I hit the rewind pedal and would rewind all the way to be beginning of the report.  Try changing the bandwidth on the Vonage website under your account.  Change it to the lowest setting if it is not already there and see if this helps.
Yes,that is what Vonage is...
I have used it for four years and haven't had a problem. See the messages below about Vonage. Actually Vonage is only in the US and Canada though. You can call other countries but they charge you, but from what I hear, they are very good rates.
Vonage sm
I see a lot of ads for Vonage locally but have heard negative reports on this board. Does anyone have this service and is it a good one? I am in search of a good low-cost long distance and direct cable service. I am currently on AOL and they are pushing broadband either through Verizon or Cox in my area. Someone in my family just went through a terrible business venture with Verizon for weeks and their computers were "totally down" and were unable to transmit important information, so I am being overly cautious.
Vonage

That terrible business venture ....  did you mean "Vonage" versus "Verizon"?  Okay, if you did then you should know that is a realistic gamble you will always have to take with Vonage and computer down-time.  That is just how it is.  Computer is down, work does not get done.  Second, check the archives on this board for negative Vonage comments.  I, for one, have had nothing but a big fat negative experience with Vonage.  Spent 6 hours -- HOURS! -- in total over the telephone with every "rep" that Vonage seemed to have, most of them The Patels from India type reps (all called Jason or Tom, yeah right), and even the American sounding reps could just not get there stuff together.

I was a residential user with a single phone line and NOTHING fancy involved, but they just could not get us hooked up.  Oy veh!, the frustration.  And that was just getting us SET UP?  We canceled before going any further.  The money savings is substantial, so we gave them every chance to prove themselves, but it just did not work out.  Good luck to you.  Not a lot of fantastic options, unfortunately.

vonage

Comes with practically everything.  Only $24.99 a month and unlimited long distance.  You have to have Cable or DSL for it to work though.

Vonage
Yes and at $24.99 remember you are getting what you pay for. I tried it and it interfered with my broadband and I had to cancel. I could not get an answer from them in the 1st 30 days - so I had to pay a penalty to cancel. Just another untrustworthy company in my opinion.
Vonage
Didn't work for me - what a waste of time and money.
Vonage

I am thinking of getting Vonage phone service.  Does it really work that well and how easy is it to set up?  I know the ads say that it is 24.95/month, is this really accurate?  Has anyone experienced any hidden costs.

Just trying to test the waters before jumping in.  Any info would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Vonage
When I first got vonage everytime I picked up the line my whole wireless network would go down. No help at all from vonage or my ISP. Since I was using a wireless phone with vonage I thought it might be the phone, so 3 phones later the problem stopped. I am currently using an old ATT 900ghz unit. Now, from a quality standpoint it is not like a regular phone. The thing stops when you stop talking and starts when you start talking. This results in the first part of each sentence being cutoff a bit and the last part ends abruptly so the listener has a hard time hearing the last word. Also, unlike a phone where both parties can talk at the same time, vonage has a hard time dealing with this. If you are on the phone a lot, I would not recommend it. I use it for my home phone, but for my business I still have a land line.

Vonage???

ANybody else having problems with Vonage last night this morning????

Thanks

Vonage???

Not that kind of problem.  I am getting circuit is busy messages and when I cannot connect to my account I am getting dropped every couple of minutes and then have to try multiple times to get a connection.  Oh well it seems to be getting better have actually been able to type five reports so far without getting dropped.   Thanks

RE: Vonage
People I know on CenturyTel are getting satellites for typing. They work wonderful and they say they are faster than DSL.
Vonage...

For the first time. I now have to get unlimited long distance service. I need to take care of this today and have been recommended Vonage.

I took a look at their website, but was wondering if anyone could give me some more info. I saw something about being able to hook up 2 phones to what they send you. I have 2 phones and my C-phone that I need hooked up. One will be downstairs. Is this possible to do?

Also, what is a rough estimate of your bill? If I get this service with them, I am assuming I can drop my regular phone service. How much do you pay down too? It says you get a refund on that money, but I wanted to see how much.

My other option I was thinking of was getting the phone service through Time Warner. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks!!!

Vonage not my cup of tea....sm
Here's my experience with Vonage. I have broadband satellite and some issues may be different with cable.

Vonage requires a router that you hook into your internet router. You hook your phones into that. So, you could have an upstairs phone if it was #2 of a cordless and #1 was hooked into the router. C-phone plugs into router also. Yes, there are only TWO plug-ins for Vonage router, so only two phones on it.

Cost me about $28 with tax monthly. Take note, though - when I went to cancel after 2 months they charged me $97 to cancel the account! Once you get past that first "free" month they have you in their clutches.

I oftentimes had poor (crackly/static) audio and thank goodness did not get rid of my land line. Sometimes I had to reboot the Vonage system multiple times a day- some days it was fine all day - some days I just hooked into my dial-up and gave up on Vonage entirely.

But, I know folks who use it for all their phones and have no problem. I am in a very remote rural area, which may contribute.

I can't remember what it cost me to get it all hooked up, they did charge me for the router.

All their customer service help is obviously outside of the US - they are helpful, but heavy accents.

So, that's what I know about it. I later found a one cent/minute phone card with a 49 cent connect fee that worked out much better for me with the C-phone.

Good luck!
Vonage
Worked fine for me. I dropped it after about 6 months when I didn't need it anymore and like the other poster said, got hit with a disconnect fee (I think it's in their small print you have to keep it for a year or you get the fee). I paid around $27 monthly and didn't really have any problems with it. I used it for C-phone work and it was always fine, also never had any trouble with working high volumes with it. If you are thinking about the calling card, try to estimate how much it would cost you with the card if you were working on a secondary account that got busy for maybe one week a month and see how that compares to Vonage's $$.

My son has Vonage and the sound is poor. You can hear what you just said like an echo. Also cuts out. Poor sound quality...susan
