As you can see, I am very old. I don't put up

with baloney, either. It works for me as follows: I have two companies that I transcribe for. When there is no work at one during my scheduled hours, I immediately change to another screen and start working for the other company. I continue in this fashion until my day is finished and I have made my financial requirement. If anyone wants me to "make up lines" (IMO, a scam to get me to work without a shift or weekend differential), I just say NO. It does cause some conflict, but I eventually get my way because my work is perfect and I am always working when I am scheduled to work. I don't play games. I always tell them that I have other plans or whatever it takes to get what I need.
Because I am old, I am very careful how I spend (waste) my time fooling around with idiots or scam artists. Life is getting shorter all the time, so if you can't solve the problem, move on. There are plenty companies out there who will appreciate you, although you will have to do a lot of work to get just the right one.
