southern sky you are okay, doesn't matter where you are. I had DirecWay and your download speed isn't reliable. Sometimes it can be really fast, other times as slow as dial-up. Snow and heavy rain also interfer with the signal.

As a long time user ... let me clear the air on this
Speech recognition (i.e. Dragon) is not for everyone.
If you are an expert at templates and programs such as ST and IT (IOW, you have the capability of memorizing thousands upon thousands of abbreviatons), and you're a reasonably fast typist, then I'd recommend against using speech recognition software unless you have to (i.e. CTS, broken wrist). When the need arises, the program can make the difference between making a decent salary and making practically nothing. Otherwise, keep doing what you're doing.
However, there are those of us who don't understand how to create templates with pop-up boxes, who don't have the capability of remembering thousands of abbreviations (AutoCorrect is about the limit for us), and who don't fly across the keyboard "with the greatest of ease." For us, speech recognition (SR) can boost our production to a level higher than what we would with a keyboard.
I feel that those who give the thumbs down to SR have not been sufficiently trained on the proper use of the product (i.e. how to speak correctly, the proper way to correct errors, using the global commands features), and/or the department utilizing the program has not used the features to allow the product to learn enough about the terminology and context of phrases (out of box, into computer, and off you go). NOT!!! 
I've been working with SR consistently since November 2001. Some days I use it all day and other times just for a specific specialty, It all depends upon my mood - whether I would rather vocalize more to produce more or prefer "The Sounds of Silence" and would rather keep my fingers limber and type, even if it means a lower production.
Either way ... I rarely have more than two errors per page, and sometimes even less than that. And for the record, I'm doing acute care reports with a wide variety of dictators and specialties.
So, if you want the "real story" behind SR, I think you need to speak with more people who have been successful with product and compare their stories against those who chastise the product ... and find out the specific differences. I'll guarantee you that it's not the product that is to blame.
Enclosed are the steps involved, my point of view only. Very long post. sm
1. Make sure you have the qualifications. If you have EXCELLENT spelling and grammer skills, good typing skills, complete attention to the smallest details, and willingness to work HARD and learn constantly, you may have what it takes.
2. Realize that you will not learn this career in 1-2 years. That is a good beginning, but then you will have an "apprenticeship" period. This runs anywhere from 1-3 years, depending on the job you get, the training available there, and your ability to branch out and absorb a constantly changing field.
3. Do your homework on the training schools. Some schools offer a program that will actually help you get a job when finished; others have a reputation that will allow you to hire with some companies as a "newbie." Don't waste money on a school that gives you a certificate and sends you out on your own. You may find it difficult to get a job without experience, and can't get experience without a job. I am not recommending a school. DO A LOT OF RESEARCH. Every school has "lucky" graduates, so get a consensus from MANY graduates.
4. If you expect to make a fortune, look elsewhere. You will find "exceptions" that make anywhere from $50 to $100 thousand a year. Most of us with a lot of experience make anywhere from $30 - $50, depending on your speed and stamina. Without stamina, you'll burn out or develop physical problems in a couple of years.
5. VR will never replace transcription. However, it takes a lot of knowledge to "proof" VR reports, and as the machines get smarter, we also must have more experience to catch their errors. I do not foresee us being replaced by machines. It is possible, though, that the wages will not go up because of this, and most MTs will stay on a plateau. Not easy, when cost of living keeps going up, but right now it is a reality, so consider it.
This is my view of the MT field, and its future. I have 18 years experience and have worked on the web for 9, since being outsourced from a hospital. It's a rough field, but not impossible, and I'm happy with it. I only have 10 years to go, though. I'm not sure I would start it now, if I were younger. You have to have a lot of determination. How long should I wait after applying for a position before I follow-up. It has been as long as two
without hearing from some. Just wondering if I should send an e-mail to follow-up to see if they received my resume or not. I don't want to offend anyone but feel two weeks should be long enough for someone to at least acknowledge my resume and that I have applied for a position. Right now I would accept anything even a note saying no thanks. Any advice would be appreciated. I haven't had to apply for a job for the past 10 years so I am a bit rusty at this. Thanks again for any advice.

Different view
I've never heard anyone else complain about this, so maybe it's just me. I find them a bit cold and dull. There is less connection to the fact that there is a human being involved. It's like listening to a mechanic changing batteries all day.
They don't keep my attention as much as other acute care notes.
my view
Well when we were married (many moons ago) we wrote out our thank-yous on the plane on our way to our honeymoon. This was due to persistence from my grandmother that the thank yous had to be sent out ASAP, otherwise I don't know when they would have gotten out. I have also been to weddings in the recent years and have found that thank yous don't seem to be sent out so much anymore. We usually get an email thank you for birthday gifts that are sent, which is nice too. I guess I myself don't expect one, but it is nice to receive a thank you.

 What does pulling number XX mean ? I noticed now it also says "click on the reply by email link" whereas before it said "click on the blue link" which had me confused also. There were quite a few blue words but no blue link except back to Main Board.

I haven't been keeping up with The View as much lately. I turn it on occasionally and might see bits and pieces. In the past, I did watch it often and every time Meredith spoke she slapped the table. It was like a habit, like talking with your hands. Problem was, once I noticed it, it drove me a little nuts! I think Oprah's friend would be great.

I have been using NCMT as my screen name on this site for quite some time. I don't know who the other NCMT is that made the post above, but it wasn't me. I personally do not care for Kikki and her negative outlook on everything.

Anyone see Meredith's last day on The View? Seems like they were trying to set the stage for Rosie's arrival with all that kissing.

I will admit that The View has never been one of my favorite shows. I would tune in occasionally, but usually became too annoyed to watch it very long or each day. However, I did watch Meredith's last day and after that, I started watching it every day. I had heard Rosie was going to be taking her place and I couldn't imagine how loud and mouthy the show would be when that happened. Suprisingly, I found that I started to enjoy the show. Meredith was usually the one that annoyed me enough to flip the channel and with her gone, the others had more of a chance to speak. I used to not care that much for Star, but since Meredith's departure, I have really enjoyed watching and listening to what she has to say. I've even started taping the show daily, and now today she announces she is leaving. I'd heard rumors and wasn't surprised, but I admit that I hate to see her go. In the little time I have been watching since Meredith left, I have really enjoyed the show. Oh well, it should be interesting in another way once Rosie comes on the scene. I'm sure I'll tune in to watch the fireworks at least a few days, but I don't think I will care to watch it much after that. Oh well.

She seems to have it is for a select few on this board and also seems to love to attack what people eat. Maybe if we do not acknowledge her rude comments, she will get tired of it and go away again. Either that, or we all stop posting anything for a day or two and she will have nothing to make rude nasty comments on. Just a thought. If we stick together, maybe we can get her to leave.

and you can get really fed up sometimes. On the other hand, there are plenty of native speaker doctors who make me mad too! Some of the ESLs are really good. Better a good ESL doc than an American mumbler

My view to be
It sounds like they are trying to edge you out. It may be your attitude, it may be the quality of your work, it may the amount they have to pay you versus others, it may none of these things or it might all of them.
When it comes to getting another job, much of it is how you present yourself. If you are poorly spoken (i.e. they call you up, ask for you, and you say "this is her" when you should say this is SHE) or you send a cover letter with your resume and use terms like "I seen that in the newspaper" or your spelling and grammar are not perfect because you didn't proof your email...trust me, they are watching and it all adds up to what you can or cannot do for the company. Lots of us network from time to time, myself included. I talk to A LOT of MTs on a regular basis and they are always asking me who to apply with and if I have an in somewhere. Sometimes I do have "in" somewhere, but when you IM me and say, and I quote, your great...well I am not suggesting you apply anywhere I work!
It had to be said. You have to be very careful about how you present yourself and your skills. You never know who is watching.

Do you mean editing as in QA, or editing voice/speech recognition work? I thought QA positions were paid hourly. Someone correct me if this is wrong. If you mean editing voice recognition work, then that pay is too low. Actually, it is too low for QA, too, IMO.
I have a different view than you
I work with Escription and am totally surprised that it picks up even the hardest of ESLs, mumblers, cardiology, etc. I do not know that any VR would be able to make much out of static. I work part and clear over $20 an hour and probably could do more if the audio were able to be cranked up even faster.

my point of view
Not trying to start a fight, just wanted you to look at it from their point of view.
My husband was a branch manager for a huge company, working 12to 13 hour days. I kept my 2 kids at home (5 and 2) AND worked AND cleaned AND cooked AND taxied AND etc.. The list goes on. He would come home, lay on the couch and say " I just need a few minutes to relax" Relax?? I didn't know what the hell that was.
Well, he quit his job 2 months ago. I know work a full 8-hour day, 5-yo in Kindergarten and he stays home with the 2 year old, cooks, cleans, taxies, etc.
Now when I am done with work, I want to lay on the couch and say, "I just need a few minutes to relax" I finally understand, but on the other hand, he FINALLY understands what I was going through. The best thing to do is communication. If he wants to see you more, take that as a compliment and if you can, rearrange your schedule so that you CAN see him more. I get started at 5 a.m., get 5yo ready at 7:30 (don't even want to know what she would be wearing if DH dressed her), then he takes her and I am back to work until about 1. I am DONE at 1!!!! It has been working out like a dream and we have just as much money as we did before.
Pay per view movies
Our pay per view channels are the 100's. Your system might be different. Our system is supposed to be connected to a phone line always, but a lot of the time it is not. We can usually still order movies with our remote. My SIL only has a cell phone now, so I do not know how she does it. We select the channel with the movie that we want. Press info. You can arrow up to exit if you do not want to purchase the program, or press menu to purchase the program. Our system is older, so yours may work a little differently. W have learned to be very careful because it is easy to order a movie that you really do not intend to. Sometimes you can go into purchases and cancel. With some things, you cannot. My husband, who is very technically challenged, sat there one night and accidently surfed where he did not belong and accidently rented some kind of special adult presentation. We immediately tried to cancel, but were unable to do so. You can also go online to rent a movie, which is also easy, or you can do so by phone.

My point of view
We all have in mind what we would LIKE to make, FEEL our skills are worth, etc. Finding our WANTS to correlate with someone else's needs (i.e., a company, MTSO, etc.) is indeed a very tall order.
The market right now just will not bear making the money some have been accustomed to in the past.
It's a fact, whether we like it or not, and it isn't going away. It's going to get tougher and more streamlined and more technologically advanced and more globalized ...
Yes, we all feel we should be better paid. It's just that there are so many other options for making this business more profitable that we don't call the shots anymore.
I should've been more clear.
I'm saying I'm okay because I have several plans I'm working on and several people are helping me. All it took was calling my parents. My Dad gave me so much confidence and made me remember who I am or used to be. I am going in for some counseling and more planning will take place then. He sold his truck a few weeks ago, so we are down to my truck. He stated that he won't leave without a vehicle. I going to be pushing very hard for him to find one and that will give him more incentive to leave. He has come to realize that we are not a good match. I have neglected to mention that when he is calm, he is actually okay. He was stirred up lately because I contacted my daughter's family for the first time since she was born. I knew this would upset him, but I didn't care. She needed that. I realize that you are all just trying to look out for me and that is why I posted originally. It seems some of you are turning on me and that's okay too. I think I was in panic-mode when I posted the first time and the finer points of what I was saying were missed. The emotional abuse has been worse on me and my kids than the physical. They were not even here yet last time it happened. The incident two weeks ago was because I was forcing a trip to see my daughter's family. He doesn't handle the step-father part very well. I will stop posting if it will make everyone more comfortable, but I did want to acknowledge those of you that helped me clear my head. I will be going to church this weekend. He will be speaking to the minister. He will be on his own if things don't improve with counseling. What brand keyboard do you actually have? I was looking at the Kinesis Maxim and it does not completely come apart but stays hooked at the top.
The problem is when it's not clear
whether it applies to you or not. Such as the statement: "You are leaving too many blanks." How many blanks are "too many?" In what circumstances?
I think it is just a lazy way of supervising - just send it to everyone instead of dealing with the individual culprits.

You say you'll have set hours to work. If your baby needs a didee change or a bottle during those hours, or if he/she's just cranky and needs to be picked up and loved, what are you going to do? If you're a normal mother, you're going to stop working and take care of your child. So that pretty much answers your question, doesn't it.
 I will never understand why some people think they can work at home with an infant. After all, if you worked outside the home and took your infant with you and he needed attention, you'd have to stop your work and tend to him there, so the fact remains, unless one is superhuman, they cannot work and take care of a child at the same time. Pretty clear cut!

I was just looking at an internet article. Supposedly Star was suppose to make the announcement on Thursday and Barbara feels betrayed by what she did. It goes into pretty good detail.

Article I read said it was Barbara who decided to suggest firing Star because Rosie had said the only way she would join the View was if there was no Star! That and she was annoyed by her antics over the past year. So, yeah, real class that Babs! Maybe she's been hanging out with white-trash-with-money-Rosie a little too much? I am not smug, I assure you. I have been blessed to discover God my creator. I have gotten to know him through the holy Bible. I accepted Jesus as my Savior and I have seen God's work in my life. The Bible explains everything of the human condition. We are born with a need for God, but our sin nature doesn't want to give up our sinful ways. So humans have rejected God and created replacement gods to worship, to their detriment. The way you can tell the difference between the real thing and false religions is that false religions base salvation on a person earning heaven. There is nothing we can do to earn heaven. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. He said that "No man gets to the Father except through me." So no, I'm not smug and superior at all, because I can do nothing to save myself or earn heaven. Maybe I am misunderstanding you, but if you want to see the type larger on your screen, you only need to go up to the box that shows 100% view and type in 115 or whatever size you want, but before you send the report, you will need to use that same dropbox to change it back to 100%.
Sorry if this does not help. Have not had that problem before in ExText.

more likely than not, they'll get ripped off on their minute-counts, dinged for nonexistent 'mistakes', or have some of their pay 'skimmed', as has been complained about in so very many posts throughout this website, and by too many companies to count. I suppose the truly honest employers in MT can probably be counted on half the fingers of one hand.
You're right about 'weighted' dictators, and it's actually a good thing. I think if a doctor is a difficult dictator to transcribe, he should be weighted, and in addition to paying the MT more to type him, the hospital should be charged more to transcribe him. If it cost them more to have the garbage-work transcribed, maybe somewhere down the road all those ESL doctors right off the boat from somewhere else won't look like such a good deal, after all.

I would be in 7th heaven if this were the case. I have my share of ESLs but the ones I have the VR picks them up much better sometimes than our English ones. I have no clue why? One English physician I think really good, the VR fails on this one??? I have some dictators (as probably all do) who talk with speaker phones, snort and go on but I am very pleased with VR and really love.
