so send good U.S. jobs to people in other countries with a lower standard of living who will happily work for far less than a person could ever support themselves on here in the U.S., transcription and other good jobs will go down the toilet. I'm still glad I didn't waste my time in college, because nowadays that's no protection, either. The short-sightedness of offshoring U.S. work is the same as hiring illegal immigrants - except the workers stay in their own countries. I guess in the future, the only way to compete will be to MOVE to India, Pakistan, etc., and work THERE for American companies.

Yeah, but are these other companies trying to put stores in every market in the country?
I think that is what makes Wal-Mart so "evil" and scares me so badly. Soon we won't have ANYONE left to buy our goods from because they force all the other competitors out of business (particularly the small business owners) and then we are FORCED to buy everything from overseas countries/Wal-Mart.

I'm researching this today. AT&T restricted our home plan for unlimited long distance and I cannot access my account out of state. AT&T/SBC have business plans that are also reasonable but may involve switching your local service to them to access it. It's the same with CenturyTel, Verizon, Qwest, etc. Residential unlimited long distance plans do not cover data to data phone calls. Eventually they catch you.
Best unlimited long distance companies?
What's a good monthly rate (or average)? TIA
Whatcha wanna bet these not so long lived jobs are the same few companies?

I totally disagree. The reason that half of them cannot get their line count in is because there are probably several of you working "off schedule" and it makes it impossible. I run a small MTSO and if I knew that some of my IC's were doing what you do, they would be out without a second glance. That is why the accounts run short and it is hard to balance the amount of MT's with the accounts. But I think you are wrong and selfish to not care about anyone else but yourself. Whatever your money buys you won't help you at the day of revelation.

As you said, greedy MTSO's usually end up...
out of the business. Or, at least, we transcriptionists warn each other about business owners like that one. I have had the same experience as has so many MT's who have been doing this for some time. Yes, I hope that I can both pay experienced transcriptionists well, add a few of the many benefit requests that have been posted here, and also make a profit. I certainly intend to try!

Unfortunately, the hospitals (and doctors) also treat their patients the same way. The "padding" of bills has been ongoing for years.
I use to pay medical claims and had to go through the hospital charges with a fine tooth comb.
And, yes, some do charge for a Band-Aid, aspirin, etc!
Thankfully, this practice was seen in only one or two doctor charges but nevertheless, it was present.
Please, don't take this post as pro-insurance companies, as I'm not. But, neither am I pro-hospital billing depts.
If greedy MTs would work their schedule...
management would not have to remind them to stop stealing work from another MTs schedule.

Yes they are greedy and hire the cheapest they can get by with. They are the ones who took over what used to be transcription companies owned by women. They saw a chance to make some easy money and that is the bottom line. They checked us all out, moved in like vultures and offered our clients free equipment, discounted work for a year, and then it has turned into this mess that we see now with offshoring, bickering, low wages, and on and on. Now they are overcharging the clients that were unfortunate enough to fall for the line of garbage when theyear switched over to the "bigger techno MTSO" who really were unprepared, as far as I am concerned, for what they took on. Look where we are now, offshoring, and on and on and on. Sigh.
Another thing I would like to see is QA departments policing themselves. I pulled out 22 binders filled with templates, samples, etc. from 10 different sources and guess what I found? Mistakes by the boatload. These are samples that were sent out to MTs by QA departments to "go by" - how hilarious. These were companies with great reputations and some are currently in business using the same templates, the same samples, etc. The temples were to be used "verbatim" and the MT is to insert any changers by the dictator, but all else was to be left. One had cc as cc's (gasp) and wrong tenses (gasp), 7.0 instead of 7, and on and on. Some were horrendous and beyond belief and were handed out by QA departments.
One client that I do business with has five QA people and none of them agree with the other. They all have their own "style" as they put it. So, it just depends on who is on if they pull your report for a once-over or you have a blank. Then,, the politics goes like this: They all want the MTs to send the QAs you got from other QA people to THEM (the QA person who did not QA that report). That is like QA doing QA on QA. Sounds like maybe extra careful? No, they then send it to their supervisor trying to get the other QA persons fired. Nice colleague interaction going there, right?
I only go by BOS almost completely if the work is hospital because of the audits that go on with JCAH or whatever they call themselves these days. Then, sometimes the doctors don't agree with JCAH and want it their own way, which may not be the way some QA wants it. The bottom line is I tell them from the outset that I do it the right way, the way the one who signs the document wants it. That is the bottom line. If the hospital complaints I refer them back to the dictator. When I have one of those I put comments on the page for my future reference and that of QA. I only violate the dictators wishes when he or she wants me to transcribe against HIPAA regulations (like the patient's name, address, and phone number, etc.) I then comment that the information was dictated, but not transcribable due to HIPAA regulations.

How long should I wait after applying for a position before I follow-up. It has been as long as two
without hearing from some. Just wondering if I should send an e-mail to follow-up to see if they received my resume or not. I don't want to offend anyone but feel two weeks should be long enough for someone to at least acknowledge my resume and that I have applied for a position. Right now I would accept anything even a note saying no thanks. Any advice would be appreciated. I haven't had to apply for a job for the past 10 years so I am a bit rusty at this. Thanks again for any advice.
MT companies negotiate with the insurance companies until they get what they want
It is strictly up to the agreement between the employer and the insurance company. Your new employer can tell you what the pre-existing clause is in your new policy. Some require proof of insurance for the past 12 months. It may say something like if a diagnosis has not been made NOR treatment received within the last __ months. Not good when companies negotiate with a pre-existing clause in order to get a lower rate. Better check with your HR with your new company before doing anything. It really gets hairy !

I also have long hair down to my waist and my three girls have hair that long too. My daughter brought them home from school last year. I was devestated and grossed out!!!! I have never had to deal with lice. Anyway, we did the treatments and two of my girls broke out in a severe rash with the OTC stuff. Their little heads were so sore!! I thought I was being meticulous with eggs, only to find them hatching again down the road. A nurse at the pediatricians office suggested I try oil to suffocate them since my girls were allergic to the lice solution. I bought a huge bottle of veggie oil and dumped it on all three heads, plus my own. I then wrapped the heads in platic wrap and then a towel. I left this on for 30 minutes. It takes a while to wash out the oil, but we never, ever had the lice or eggs again!!! If you try this, make sure you put on an old shirt and put a towel around your shoulders. Obviously we were desperate, but we all have such long hair and very thick hair so I was willing to try anything. And I figured there was no chemicals involved so that was pretty safe. And it sure did help my littles ones since their scalps were pretty raw from the solution. Hope this helps and Good luck!

more safety nets than almost anywhere else on earth. There are food stamps, WIC, food pantries, missions, churches, etc. I don't believe there are policies in place to purposely make sure children go to bed hungry. There MUST be some personal responsibility here. I don't hear much out of you along that line, just blame. CEOs, big corporations, blah blah blah

Most of the people in this country
Are way too dependent on the government to save them and are looking for a free handout. While I have sympathy for those whose homes have been destroyed, I agree that you should have some sort of a back-up plan of water, canned goods, etc., to prepare for an emergency. This is just common sense. We had really bad fires in Arizona this year and I was prepared and ready to leave if I had to and didn't wait around for somebody to come rescue me. People need to be more self reliant and not wait for somebody else to take care of them. The hurricane victims had plenty of time to stock up on canned goods, water, etc., before the hurricane hit. I have relatives in Florida and they had to evacuate, but they had planned ahead and had canned food and water ready for when they came back, as they knew there would be nothing available. I think Kennedy's quote of-- Ask not what your country can do for you-- would be very appropriate in this day and age when everybody stands around waiting for a free government handout. These people would never had made it as pioneers----.

Then we have a problem in THIS country because...
The statistics show that a full TEN PERCENT of American 10-year-old boys are on ADHD medications. That isn't even counting the girls. I think when you include the girls the percentage of kids on ADHD medications approaches 20%. So if it's true that about 3% to 5% of people actually have ADHD (I can buy that), then we are over diagnosing and over medicating way too many kids. More often than not when I type an office note about a kid on ADHD medications the doctor also mentions some kind of turmoil in the home, i.e. divorced parents, kids living with grandparents. I once helped out on a field trip for my daughter when she was in 2nd grade and it was like a mobile hospital what with trying to keep up with which kid got what pill at what time throughout the day. It was ridiculous.

you live in, but around here you can hardly get into a restaurant, the malls are FULL of people so that it's hard to park, and the BIG trucks and SUV's just keep roaring past me. Outsourcing has been going on for 30+ years... People adjust their careers, oro something else pops up that out does somebody else's idea. Nothing stays the same, you gotta change with the times. Many outsourced jobs are low skill jobs that Americans want to be paid big money to do... Well guess what, it isn't going to happen. So get yourself another career. I've had THREE of them myself. I've been a nurse, a commercial lines insurance rater (that all went computerized), and now I'm an MT. What good does it do to sit here in cyber space moaning and groaning about something that's been going on for decades and isn't going to stop no matter how much you complain.

I worked for Club Med for a few years in the 80s and worked closely with the European-born French, Spanish/Mexican and Germans. The Spanish people are truly grateful when you merely attempt their language. The Germans are pretty helpful if you make a mistake but they all know English as it is required in school. The French, however, are very strict. I found this when I worked with the Club Med administration in the Caribbean, Mexico, and especially in Paris. I took four years of French in high school, know French diction pretty well, but was still corrected with Every mistake I made, and several times (in all countries) was told to not even try if I couldn't speak it perfectly. That is my experience, and I'm allowed my opinion as it has been proven in many countries. My point about the Indian MDs is that they were not trained here, or they would have been corrected in their use of some English. Some of it can also be legally misinterpreted. There was actually a "medical" school in St. Lucia in the Caribbean (next to Club Med). Many Americans attended it. They couldn't get into the mainland-based medical schools. It also used to be hard for foreign-trained doctors to practice here. My point was that it's a shame that we have to suffer with these doctors, not just us but those poor patients.

usually under pretty tight wraps, but today, not so much. Going through a stressful time with a friend and, well, any sort of stress does me in. So, whenever I have days when my name is all over the board, that's one of those days that I lose control of my OCD. I'm hovering today, checking in often, just itching to say hello to someone, anyone, to help ease the mental and physical burden of what has transpired in the past few days. Blech. I hate it when I get like this, as I'm sure others do, but I can't help myself. Could be worse I guess. I could be like one of those poor people who cut or something.
