Okay, I'll bite and respond but I hope it isn't over your head
Here is what I did. I've had ST for years. I got the updated Stedman's ST. I don't know if you have the comuter skills to do this and this is why I am concerned you still think it's over your head or I'm not trying to help.
All the words in ST are also in the spellcheck. If you use ST, the words on put on your document from Smartype are spelled correctly AUTOMATICALLY. The Stedman's ST was overhauled in 2004 and has all the medications and surgical terms up until then. Now, if you want those words in your own spellcheck without buying their spellcheck, you can add the ST words into your dictionary in two ways.
The first is as you type and spell check at the end of each report.
The second is to convert the ST program into a text file (please go to productivity board for help doing this if you don't know how). Once it is in a text document, run your spellcheck on the entire document and add all the words at one time to your own spellcheck. This may take 2 full days of doing nothing else as the text file is huge. Also, you would need to take out any abbreviated forms first (anything where xxx=xxxxxxxx) so you don't add abbreviated words to your spellcheck. That takes another day's work.
Now, to update from 2004 to today, go to prescribing reference, register and copy all the new medications from the last 2 years onto a blank document, run spellcheck and add those to your spellcheck.
Now go to the Stedman's web site and sign up for the 30-day free trial and letter by letter copy their surgical word list onto a blank document. Run spellcheck to add those words to your spellcheck.
So now ask yourself, if it takes me 5 days to get a spellcheck I didn't have to pay for, how much income did I lose, how much time not getting a job did I lose and was it worth saving a few bucks?
Your choice. I've been around the block a time or two and know that trying to cut corners on how you earn your money isn't smart in this business.

ball
You'll think I'm crazy, but I use one of those big exercise balls. If you sit on it, you are forced into good posture and work the core muscles at the same time. Most comfortable chair I ever had.
Ball sm
My PT recommended it, she said one insurance company encourages it. I haven't tried it yet, but if I had the time, I would like to, it would take some time to get used to, trying to get over the fear of falling on it -- it will come sooner or later.

Ball question
Any way to save a ball with a puncture? I'm not cheap, well, yes I am, but I want to at least try to save it. I LUV MINE! Suggestions?
Play The Ball, Not The Man
I am respectfully handing this thread back to Dinosaur, when someone starts playing the man, not the ball, it's time to say cheers because it serves no purpose. Loo, you don't know the first thing about me nor did you bother to take the time to say one reasonable word - to those that did take a moment to at least respond meaningfully, thank you.

DID anyone ever sit on an exercise ball?
hello
DO any of you ever sit on an exercise ball?
Is that better?! !!
I was 'on the ball' for about
3 years and I think it actually helped my lower back. Then I busted my wing (in a non-ball-related accident). That was over 4 years ago, though. I am not looking forward to the breaking-in period all over again. Still, all it's going to cost me is a little lung power to blow the thing back up, so I believe I will give it another try. Maybe it's just like riding a bicycle?
And when you get bored, you can always bounce up and down on it. Plus, your antics amuse your family and friends.
Can you give us a ball park?

Base for the ball chairs
I actually bought my exercise ball/chair through ebay and it came with a base which has a small back support as well as wheels. It works out great.
Do you use an exercise ball for a chair?
I know some transcriptionists do, and I think the wine and the ball would make a really fun combination to watch.
Homemade stilts. We had a ball with these. sm
The ice cream truck used to make multiple trips around the block just to watch us.
Balance Ball chair. Has anyone tried?
I found this in a catalogue: http://www.gaiam.com/retail/product/95-1004
I have a balance ball, and now and then I sit on it at my desk. It really does feel great, but the problem is keeping it steady. It's large and I have a hard time keeping myself at a comfy distance from the keyboard. I was thinking of getting this chair as a "supplemental" chair. I don't think it would work for 8 hours a day, but I think it would help alleviate some pressure and strain for periods during my work sessions.
And, this may be TMI - but this past summer I had a breast reduction. (Best thing I've ever done for myself!) The change in my body has definitely affected my posture and has alleviated pain in my back and shoulders. But I really need to strengthen my back and obliques more. I thought this chair might help with that.
Has anyone used this type of chair, or even used a balance ball at their desks? What do you think?
The ball is completely in your hands . .
I don't blame you at all for being frustrated. Someone with experience would have been the wiser choice. This girl is getting an incredible opportunity. All her work will have to be gone over. She will not be able to work on her own for quite some time. We have two new girls in our office who just finished their courses (not a home course for Pete's sake), but we knew what we were getting into. I don't think you need to go to the doctor. If you do not want to be her mentor it will not work out. Otherwise, give it your best. It's going to require a lot of patience on your part. Good luck
Exercise Ball at Desk
I sat on my ball at the desk a lot during my third pregnancy. It really seemed to help with some of the back problems I was having.
My brother gave me the idea - apparently many people with office jobs in Europe sit on balls all day at their desks.
I am using a regular chair now because my ball sprung a leak, but I plan on replacing it very soon.
Thanks for the warning. I keep trying to use ball of foot, but often use big toe. NM

I hope this applies to companies like Medquist. I hope there
isn't a way they can get around it. I REALLY hope.
An exercise ball can be a great thing!
I know at least a few MTs who exercise on the ball for five minutes or so every hour or so. Your schedule sounds very tight, so I guess this would be better than nothing!
Never heard of such ball and chain inflexibility before.
s
Well, get started. YOU can start the ball rolling.

To your liking.. i used one about the size of a tennis ball and just sliced into

I taped a little paper duck on my selectric ball and sm
had fun watching it go back and forth while I typed. I was so happy when Selectrics came out, as those huge carriages always knocked over my cup of tea and anything else that was in its path on my desk!
I guess I'm the odd ball; I LOVE going to home parties! sm
But on the other hand, I HATE shopping. I do the majority of my shopping from home parties -- Lia Sophia (sp?) jewelry, Tastefully Simple (a fave), Pampered Chef. I'm waiting to go to a Southern Living Home Show but haven't been invited to one yet.
Anyone ever type while sitting on stability/exercise ball? sm
Working on getting back in shape. My Theraband ball is about the same height as my work chair so thinking about using it part of the day to sit on while transcribing. Wondering if anyone has every done this and how it went. Even if only for part of a day or an hour, I think it would be a great way to gain core body strength. Anyone tried this or even thought about it.
The ball works for the butt, but not so well for the lower back.
I sat on an exercise ball for about 2-1/2 years (with a 3 month break in between after giving birth to my son). The first 1-1/2 years before I had my son were great, as my abs were in pretty good shape. After the delivery and after my abs were shot, I had a hard time keeping good enough posture of my back and ended up putting more strain on my lower back, causing injury. I just switched back to a regular chair, and my back feels great comparitively, but my butt hurts. I am going to try one of those donut things though.
If you do try the exercise ball, I noticed that if I kept moving on it, I typed faster and produced more (kept me going more), but be very careful to make sure you are keeping a good posture.
Good luck.
I threw my back out playing dodge ball in 2nd grade. nm

If you have a Hancock Fabric store near you, they have a knit ball and video that teaches you how to
knit.
I love to quilt, if there is a quilting store near you that gives lessons, that would be great. Mine gives lessons where you can finish a lap quilt in a day.
Also ceramics is fun.

Right, that's what I do, it's a game!
They seem to be trained to speed-speak anyway, so why not join in on the fun!
This is not a game.
If there really is an error on page 50, please let me know where it is, and I will mark my book accordingly, so I don't have to cross-reference every term on that page wiith Stedman's until I find it. To me this is neither fun nor funny. I only type one specialty and there are many terms obsscure enough to me that I won't automatically spot them as a typo.
I'll go! I'll go!! I won't take hormones and will be ready to defend your honor :) n/m

No. It'll be the most expensive magazine subscription you'll ever get, and it's unnecessary
