OF INTEREST TO ALL TIME WARNER CUSTOMERS...THEY ARE GOING TO START CHARGING FOR USAGE AND NOT A FLAT

This really sucks as the article said it would impact heavy users only.  My cable bill is already high but to be charged for actual using will skyrocket my bill.  I think I could spit nails right now.  I can post the article if anyone is interested.  They said it will be a trial period.  Anyone else use Time Warner?

Tell them will have to start charging for time
x
I do have Time Warner
Cable internet and it is extremely fast.  I also have their phone (digital) and upgraded cable service for $100.00 a month.  It is much cheaper than anything else I know of.
Yeah for Time Warner
I actually just saw a commercial on television about customer service from TW, the end being they were making a point about a company with customer service in the United States.  It had a guy calling for service, showed an overturned vehicle in a foreign country with the guy walking  and the voice says something like stick with Time Warner, where when you call customer service, you get someone in the United States.
Time Warner Cable has also settled a lawsuit
in hopes of staving off billions.  They sold their customers names out on mailing lists.  Got a notice from Federal courts that if you were a customer from 1998 on, then your in.  I think you may get about a month of free cable out of it.  So looks's like Time Warner/AOL got caught and hmmmmmm that 1998 year is the same time frame as MedQuist...geez!
I haven't read any of the other replies regarding Time Warner
so forgive me if this was already noted. I have the all in one package phone, internet and cable and haven't heard anything about this at all. Nothing's been in our paper or on the news. I guess I'll just have to wait and see and worry about it then.
Recent Article on the Time Warner Cable rate trial

I saw this article yesterday in the news.  I back tracked and found a link to it:

Time Warner Cable to Trial Usage-based Billing Scheme for High-speed Internet

Yes, those. They look "heavy", and even when a post starts out "another perspective"
Big red flag!!  Grab the BP pills, and read at your own risk! Sort of like the way my heart twists along with my stomach when my husbands says, "Now, there's something we need to talk about"...I know that is NEVER good, cause men never talk about stuff first!
It's time for the fun to start once again!!!!
Lady, you reign it in. No one sounds like an adult complaining about their job day in and day out. That's what people do who work at McDonald's for minimum wage or as a cashier at Wal-Mart. They complain because they don't make a lot of money for the work that they actually do.

So, why don't all of you who want to sit here and bash me and everyone else who actually like working for Medquist get up off your dead behinds, take a shower, maybe do your hair for once, put on some makeup, take advantage of the rest of the day. Don't complain for once. I know it may come as a shock, but there are people who don't complain all the time and really enjoy their life. Maybe you really have an issue that you need worked out in counseling about being negative all the time. Let me know how that works out for you.
So it's time we all start doing our own work (sm)

We cannot afford a middleman anymore.

If you think that's bad, try living on the 7-8 cents a line and still having the expenses of paying for equipment, etc.

Time to just find your own accounts, folks.

Ask him next time to start a new file and not make it so large.

What is going on when every time you start computer - there are numerous empty folders, cannot find
nm
Start Stop digital player has a time stamp feature..sm...

I'm not sure if it puts it in Word or what it does.  I've never needed it.

I think a program that would pull header information from Word and add it to a log file might be needed by quite a few MTs.  I don't know if that's feasible since everyone's needs would be different.  A lot of MTs like to keep logs though, myself included.

If I think of anything else I'll be back.

I use wireless because it's the only broadband I can get...sm

I  have a router on my main computer, which also speeds up the connection. Downloads .wav files in a flash. The router also allows The Boy to play his Xbox live in the basement.

I also have wireless broadband s/m

I don't have it because of the price ($55 a month), but because I cannot get DSL or cable.  I looked into satellite, but after explaining to them the work that I do, they said that I would easily exceed their limits in probably about three weeks, leaving me with week four totally down (they don't have an overage that you can buy).  I actually spent the time tallying one weeks' worth of voice files to give them an average of what my week looks like.

The weather doesn't really affect my wireless, I have had my satellite go out during bad weather, but my wireless is still up and going.

I would be interested in the cards mentioned, but I live in an area where cell phone reception is hit or miss, so that won't work for me either.

I use two different FTPs and also a WebTop platform for my hospital account.

UPS or broadband air card maybe ?
Thanks to the posters below. After more investigation it sounds like I could get a fairly good UPS battery backup for the money a generator would cost. Of course it would not last as long time wise. I just wish I knew for sure that our cable high-speed internet would still work w/o power. The customer service guy put me on hold, then came back and said yes, but I am leery. I guess I could test that by buying a battery backup...charging..hooking it up and cutting the power via the main switch and see if the cable works but that would only test if MY house is without power not if the power were cut to the area. Been thinking about cutting the cable internet and going with an "air card" (broadband off cell towers?) Then, with a laptop, I could take my work with me too ?? I am Soooooo low tech it is agonizing !!!
Broadband/Internet Phone - sm
Hi - I've been using USA DATANET (it's available in my area) without any problems on a Lanier and DVI (Like C-Phone). Mine is $24.95/mo for unlimited long distance. I can turn my Internet modem off at night, and therefore, can't use the phone if that is off. Otherise, no problems. Hope this helps.
i love my satellite/broadband!
I too do not have DSL/cable available in the boondocks where I live...but a small local broadband company started up a year and half ago at good rates and I jumped on board. I love it! I have never in 18 months or so had an outage other than when we had severe weather with power outages. I have a neighbor who had satellite with one of the big companies (Hughes, I think) and said the service was fine but too expensive. I have been using satellite for at least three different accounts with no problems...the only problem is when a company doesn't "allow" satellite.
Wireless Broadband/Sprint, etc.

Hi to everyone!

Is anyone out there using the wireless broadband, like Sprint or Verizon (not so unlimited)?  I am currently using Verizon and have now found out the unlimited is not so.  I have ordered Sprint and the USB modem will be here in a few days, but am now paranoid about 0ver-Use on that!

I just moved to a house in the country, with no DSL, no cable and am unsure about Wild Blue for satellite because of the start up cost and then not being satisfied.

Any country living transcriptionists out there with advice?  I am in northern CA.

Thanks for any help!

I just got fixed wireless broadband
And I love it! No lag like satellites. I thought I'd never get broadband since I'm a mile from the nearest house but this is a very nice connection.
Sprint Mobile Broadband sm
I have been using this service for the last 3 months or so and would never go back to dial-up. However, be aware that there is a 5GB limit per month with any of the $60/month data plans offered by Sprint (starting next month), AT&T, and Verizon. I have been checking my usage, and even with downloading a ton of songs for my son's MP3 player, work, and occasional youtube type stuff, I am averaging about 3.5GB for the month. Also, check what service has the best coverage for your area. I went with Sprint because of the unlimited package they had at the time, but since that is going away, there is no difference to me in carriers except their coverage area. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me, and I can give you the website where I purchased my equipment. They have incredible customer service and even helped me get my modem switched out when it broke (my fault but I had the total protection plan on it, only $7 per month and well worth it).
Anybody use verizon mobile broadband?
Can you tell me anything about it? My dad is thinking about getting it and I wondered if I could use it at the campground they go to, but wasn't sure how it worked. Is there a limit to how much you can be online? Any info is greatly appreciated! TIA!
Satellite/WiFi/Broadband
I am going to return to working at home soon.  My husband has retired and we are going to be spending a portion of our time in Scotland in a private residence with a wireless connection.  In looking at the requirements of several of the company websites I have found, they apparently do not allow satellite or WiFi connections.  Do any of you travel and use your laptop for work?  If so, what sort of connection do you use?  When I was working for Medquist I worked from Scotland with a wireless connection, password protected, in two separate private homes, no direct computer to modem connection, and had no problems with this at all.  This was a couple years ago.  I am currently employed at a local hospital, so I cannot ask my current employer about this.  Many thanks to anyone who has an answer.
Broadband/Internet Telephone Service
Does anyone use a broadband/internet telephone service for transcription, such as Vonage, Covad, Lingo, SpeakEasy? I have a local long distance account and am looking into this type of service for a monthly flat fee for unlimited minute usage. Otherwise, the long distance fees would eat me alive. Any info on any company, good or bad, would help me tremendously in making my decision. I am researching several via the internet, but once again, any info would help.

Have a save and sane 4th of July!
Lillian
Have you looked into Verizon wireless broadband. sm
It might be available in your area.

Don't worry about the ESLs - just takes getting used to their voices, and practice makes perfect. I had a hard time at first, but over a few weeks, the clarity came as I got used to it. Ask your supervisor for samples, too. Samples really help - and they will help you master the voice, too.

verizon has broadband internet card
for laptops..  it is about 15 dollars/wk but you can write it off.. i do lots of stuff in the car and verizon works everywhere..
SuddenLink broadband service good ?
Would appreciate any input anyone can give me with this. Considering switching from phone line to cable broadband. Thanks.
I'm using a fixed wireless broadband connection
And so far, so good. The tower is just across the cow field, though. I haven't had any cutting in and out and I feel like a kid with a new toy since I'm able to watch You Tube, etc. now. My provider (SEIdata) came and did a site survey before installing it first and told me I had an excellent signal. They put a small box on my roof and ran cable to my office. I plug into an Ethernet modem and I can WIFI it with a router if I want to, too.

I've heard mixed reviews on the "cards," but I would recommend fixed wireless if you have a provider that does a site survey and installation.

Mobile broadband 5GB limit with ALL carriers
I signed up with Sprint last year when it was unlimited, and starting in July 2008, they put a cap of 5GB, which is what all the other carriers had done also. That said, if you are using the connection mainly for work, the cap should not be a problem. I downloaded a program that keeps track of my usage as well as use the Sprint site to check it occasionally. You can't be downloading tons of MP3s or watching a lot of youtube or other video things during each month, but it doesn't have to be completely avoided either.
I pay $40 a month unlimited wireless broadband...
And I work on Bayscribe for two different MTSOs. I never have a problem and have no limit to 5GB or anything. It's through a company called Cricket if there are any in your area. I also have dial-up as backup just in case weather conditions interfere with my wi-fi connection (Bayscribe works great with dial-up, too, BTW!).

I, too, can't at this time afford satellite or cable, so I'm making do with wi-fi and dial-up and saving myself about $25 a month. It doesn't sound like a lot but in this economy, every little bit I can put back in my pocket helps.

Good luck!!!
Anybody have any experience with Verizon Broadband Wireless (air card)...
Hello, I'm looking into buying as USB720 from Verizon Wireless.  It is for wireless broadband access and simply is a modem with an antenna that plugs right into your USB port which I could use with my PC.  It is $99.99 after a $50.00 mail-in rebate.  The service itself is $59.99 a month with a 2-year commitment.  I live out in the boonies with only satellite internet and dialup available to me.  Also, I believe that it is compatible with a VPN.  This certainly would be a nice alternative to pokey diaup and satellite.  It is cheaper than satellite (the initial cost anyway) and it is faster with speeds up to 700 kbps.  According to the map at Verizon, it is not yet available to me in the Las Cruces/El Paso area.  But according to two reps at Verizon, it is available.  I get a strong signal here at my house and there is a 30-day trial period.  Is there anybody in this region that has been able to get this service with success?  Also, any experience at all with the Verizon air card would be welcomed.  Thanks in advance!  Shelley
Questions - Working with Mobile Broadband Access

Hi ..

I need to set up to work away from home and am considering mobile broadband wireless.

I would appreciate any information ya'll could give me - I know nothing about it, other than most service is 60.00/month ... specifically, what carriers and how much time does it get you?

Thanks so much!  I have verified the major carriers provide coverage in the area I will need to be in.

Merry Christmas!

Charging

The equipment you have will last for a long time so there is not that much to get into business.  13 cents sounds okay, 1  to 1 1/2 cent higher than I charge but I am out in the NW area.  I do pick up of tapes, printing, delivering, use of "sticky paper" etc.  But I average $30 to $45 per hour depending on the clinic.  I haven't raised my prices in a while as I feel it is good money for me.  I buy transcribers off E-Bay, some last for a long time, some not so long.   I am planning on going digital in the next few months but I don't feel it is fair to pass that along to my clinents.  It is my decision.  Will still have to deliver back printed material.   But you have to get those accounts and keep those accounts so charge a fair price -- the docs have more overhead than we do -- make a decent living and provide an extra decent service and you will do okay.   I have said many times -- my accounts have been with me the oldest now 16 years -- psych account and my shortest is 5 years.  They pay on time, have never had to ASK for my check, never a bounced check, and always Christmas bonus and a Birthday present.  So that is why I keep my prices a little lower and spoil them a little but in the long run -- for five years now -- have not had to look for a new account/client and I know that they will not go overseas.   I have had my share of those accounts that stayed with me for a little while until they got something cheaper and those that were just not for me and so that is why I will do most anything to stay where I am right now until I retire in 7 more years.     I put in about 25 hours per week on these accounts as an IC and make $38 K per year.  So for me it fits just right.

If you are only charging 11 cpl
They'll never know the difference, and it will make it worth your while.  These doctors do not care about 65 characters and all that jazz.  Just highlight the document, and charge them under line count.  This will enable you to be compensated for any searches or extras that come along with the territory.  They won't know the difference.  Take it from me.  You'll be fine, and you won't need to do all of this math.  These people are cheating themselves using 65 character lines and the like.  If it is an account you got on your own, then charge it like that.  I'm living proof it works, and provide great TAT, and they won't mind paying you at all.
Charging

I was offered the opportunity to type for a doctor that is moving in wiht another group of doctors and need a transcriptionist. I have typed for other clinics in the area, but these physicians only paid by the hour.

I am wondering if it would be in my best interest to see if they wont pay by the line or character. I have never done this before. I work full time at a hospital and will be doing this at home in the evenings.

Any information on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks

When i was charging
17 cpl as an IC I did. Now I make less.

Could make that if I put in the hours but my priorities are the same. Would rather make less and have more time to do the things I enjoy but guess I'm fortunate to be able to make that choice.
Charging
I have my first interview with a Dr. tomorrow and I won't know what to say when he asked me how much!  Should I charge by the line, and if so , how much or should I charge by the page?  He will be my first Dr ever so I have no idea!  I have been reading about lines but I just wanted to know what active transcriptionists are charging!  Thanks.
charging per character
What is the average charge per char??  A dr called me and told me he is currently paying .002 per char.  If I calculated right, that would be .13 cpl.  Is it standard to charge char w/spaces or not? Thanks for any info, I always have charged by the line
Charging for copies.

My charges for copies depend on who it is and how many copies.  I had one guy who wanted to use me and my little inkjet printer as a personal photocopy shop.  I was charging $.10 per copy to cover paper and ink, but he'd want 20 copies of each page I typed.  Finally, I told him to go to Staples to make copies because I wasn't going to do it any more.  I was driving there every few days for more ink and paper anyway, and he was just someone I didn't want to do business with.

I don't charge my other client for carbon copies because he usually only wants one or two copies.  Besides, he pays me really well and I've been typing for him for 8 years.  When he wants full color copies of digital pictures printed out, however, it's at least $1 per page because it chews up the color ink cartridges so much.

Just look out for people CHARGING for same.
If someone offers you FREE mentorship, jump on it. But don't fall for some folks on boards that will offer to mentor you if you send them a private message/e-mail, etc.

A lot of local hospitals and a handful of services have mentoring (legit) programs. Do a search for MT services and their mentor programs. I know that TRX Inc. in Portland had one several years ago. I'm not sure if they still do. There are several that are trying to promote growth of the MT workforce.

Just ignore the crabby, tainted, bitter older MTs that don't want anyone else coming into "their" industry.

I know Kaiser MTs that make $100,000/year. If you're good, have a GOOD ATTITUDE, and apply yourself and work hard, and don't fall into the trap of becoming persnickety and bitter :) you'll do great! It sounds like you have a really good attitude. Just avoid all the negativity! It's just jealousy, angst, fear, self-pity.
You are so right. Our pay goes down from same folks who are charging us more when we

Right now McDonald's in our town starts employees at $8/hour and pays benefits and some school benefits.

I have worked 30 years in transcription and make less now than I did in 1985.  That's 20 years ago.  I know more and earn less.  In fact I am a fraction above poverty level.

If you don't think MQ is getting ready to take us all below poverty level right down there with Mexico City, just hide and watch.  Or rather, sit here and think you are with a "good" company.  I didn't, because they are making millions in profit off your hard work and not sharing a penny of it with you.

In the old days an employer spread the wealth of the company with the employees who made it happen.  This group has never heard of the concept.

But I think MTSO's are charging less
I know for a fact that it is very difficult here in the Chicagoland area to land an account for more than 11 cpl, and we used to routinely get 'em for 14 to 17...so I think you are seeing the trickle down effect. I used to pay up to 10 on gross lines, but I can't do that if I only can get an account for 11.
charging more works

I can agree with you.  I used to run a small "word processing service" as it was called back in the 80s.  I was competing with others and I figured one high-paying job was worth more to me than a bunch of inexpensive jobs.  My fees were higher than anyone else's.  I charged $25 an hour for anything other than regular text, be it medical, legal, foreign language, technical, editing, compiling bibliographies, checking footnotes for correct site within the text as changes were made....  I had more work than I could handle and it was all by word of mouth.  I had to hire 2 others to help with the overflow and still turned down work.  Would have continued except for needing to care for terminally ill father.  I had graduate students trying to book me years in advance to do their dissertations.

Cheap doesn't work.  Not in the long run.  You do indeed get what you pay for.

If If U have your own accounts, U should be charging MDs more. nm
.
The offshores should be charging more, too....
... even though lots of their work is cr@p.
charging for tapes
Hi.  Could anybody give me the going rates for tapes (per line of course) that are not printed out and just e-mailed back to the clinic when completed.   I have been charging .11 per line including spaces.  I have charged this for approximately 1-1/2 years.  Could I charge more?  Thanks in advance.
Anyone with experience in charging by the word?
xx
charging for OFFICE NOTE mt

Hey gang !   Today I went my family's podiatrist for  the first time for an ingrown toenail.  As soon as the doc sat down with me, and saw my chart, he commented on my occupation of "transcriptionist".   Within 30 minutes I left his office minus an ingrown toenail, and plus a new account doing his transcription !

And this is going to be a lucrative account - 20-25 office notes per day, x 6 days a week.  Yippee !

Question - how do you guys bill your private docs for office notes?  He said some notes are only 1 paragraph, while some can be 2 pages.  Doc said he'd prefer to pay by the page. So should I charge a 1/4 page price, 1/2 page, full page?  How would you guys handle office note charges ?   I will be emailing the files, btw.

Thanks !

Which font if charging by page?
I am doing something very different from my usual transcription. They want it single space and a different format. I am using Courier New 10 and it looks like they are getting a heck of a lot on the page for what I am charging - I am working for ZIP with this setup. Can anyone tell me what font to use, this is so small when I print it, that I can barely read it, my eyes are killing me as well. Help! You can E-mail me if you wish, I am very, very tired, 12 hour days on this with little to show for it.
How to handle this re: charging account sm

How do you handle an account with a doctor who is constantly changing things?  I'm talking about a guy who will give an entire 4-5 sentences then have you go back and delete and change it.    I'm getting really, really tired of typing it all out only to have to go back and delete and retype.

Do you keep track of how much you deleted and charge for that also?  It is really cutting into production.  This isn't occasional either.  He does this at least once, if not several times, in EVERY single report.  It is like the man can't string together thought.  Not to mention it is frightening how much things change sometimes.  I wonder often if he is talking about two different patient.
