I have posted a couple of links inside for both Maine and New Hampshire -sm

There are a lot of great places to visit in either state.  Kind of depends on what your interests are and if you are traveling alone or with children.  Also depends on what time you plan on visiting.

I live in Maine and have visited New Hampshire several times.  Not sure I can answer all your questions but feel free to ask and I will try.  Hope the links below help you.

Portland is a nice place and you can go to what they call the Old Port (which is on the water) and there are old shops and stuff there.  Nice place to walk around if you want to walk.  To drive I would travel up Route 1 (traffic may be heavy but you get to see the coast of Maine).  Freeport is a nice place to visit if you want to shop.  Home of the famous LL Bean.  Kittery (which is just across the border from Portsmouth) has outlet stores.  Portsmouth also is nice and I believe they have a lot of old historic buildings if that is of interest to you.

here is the link for Maine - http://www.visitmaine.com/home.php

The White Moutains in NH are beautiful as I said before.  Also in North Conway, NH there are tons of outlet stores there also.

here is the link for NH - http://www.visitnh.gov/

Which part of Maine and NH were you thinking of visiting??? The Maine coast is beautiful -sm

and the White Mountains in NH is also nice.  I would suggest driving the Kangamangus Highway in the White Mountains in NH.  Very nice drive and beautiful views of the White Mountains.  I believe the Old Man of the Mountain is along this route but part of him fell a while ago so not sure what he looks like now???!!!

new hampshire
How about the Old Man in the Mountain.  Not sure where it is but I think it is in the White Mountains.
Not a sightseeing place but for a good lobster meal, sm
Chauncey Creek Lobster Pier, Kittery Point, ME.

You bring your own cocktails, appetizers, tablecloth. It is creekside, very casual, parts are open air and parts under a tent. You pick your lobster, they cook and bring to your table. Just fabulous, just get there early because parking is limited.

New Hampshire, there is no sales tax on liquor.

Just driving up the coast of Maine is fabulous.

Have fun!
Highlights - OMG
I read Highlights as a kid. Thanks to Mom, I always had a subscription. I'm getting my kids hooked on Highlights now too! I love that!
$2 for pizza, $15-20 for cut & highlights.
nm
That's for a cut & full highlights though...
I don't know what she would charge for just a hair cut.
IC status not worthwhile for me either
My house is paid for and my car is paid for, so I don't need to make huge money. I have one kid that qualifies me for EIC. If I keep my income below a certain level, I get a nice EIC tax refund thingy, more than I ever got when I was making "good" money and had a baby and bought a house in the same year. In other words, the govt pays me more than what I paid in. However, my IC income just screws that up because of that self-employment tax which eats substantially into my EIC refund. I'm sure I'm not good at explaining things, but that is how it works for me.

I personally don't think IC work is worthwhile unless you're making huge money at it, enough to live on and enough to sock away for tax liability.

$5 for the pizza guy and $10 for a haircut and a pedicure. If nails too, tip more. Highlights, tip m
tip at least $10 when I eat out. I tell you one thing though, my pizza place always gets exactly what I order to me. If they didn't, I wouldn't tip as good. If I didn't get good service somewhere though, I would go some place else.
It may be worthwhile IF you can actually find a company now that pays extra for it -
I let mine drop after 6 years. It got to be very costly keeping up with the continuing education credits because for me it meant nearly always having to fly some place to get them, hotel, food, etc. My 2 cents...
it's called a "reality check" .... and extremely worthwhile ...
I do this routinely ... with varying results ... but I have been humbled to discover that on my "terrible" account, I can exceed 200 lph .. although I often fall under 100 ... it's amazing how I (we) can psych ourselves into "low expectation" of ourselves ...

We don't have much (if any control) over our employers much as our employers don't have that much control over the "clients" ...

My "bad account" is annoying in --- let me count the ways ... I was stunned on a "timed trial" to realize how much my "annoyance" was hindering my "performance" (i.e. my pocketbook)...

as Cher memorably said in Moonstruck -- SNAP OUT OF IT ...

Better to work every-other-hour full tilt boogie than to grow old, "helpless" trying to make your line count ..

Carpe diem -- like the serenity prary -- recognize what you CAN change .. and do it.
Night Owl - Yours is the most worthwhile post I have ever read on these boards
When working from home, whether dealing with clients, MT management, or QA personnel, you can just feel the negative vibes coming off of people over so little.  It causes a very stressful environment.  Maybe that is where some of the MTs on here develop that attitude, I don't know.  The awful insults, comments, and degrading people on here is absolutely unbelievable.  Just because you have 15, 20, 30 years of experience in this field, that is no excuse for rudeness.  Once you have insulted someone to the point I have seen here, your MT experience means nothing to me, and if I were a management person and knew this about you, you would not work for my company no matter how perfect your MT skills are.  This says a great deal about you. Perhaps people in general will write things they would never say to a person face to face.  I happen to be a very mature, very experienced MT.  I feel like my knowledge should be used to help someone, not degrade them.  I hope the MTs who have posted above on this comment will continue to call these people out when they post these horrible comments.  Even if you are right (which seems to be the most important thing in the world to them), there is a way of stating facts, opinions, and comments that you have yet to learn in dealing with people even if it is not face to face.
It has not been financially worthwhile, but I find it easier to get jobs. I have 18 years experienc
and I find with the CMT, I get an offer for every job I go after. In all fields, there are many employers that just feel more secure hiring you with initials after your name. I will be keeping mine.
There are good points and there are bad and ugly points. Unfortunately, the bad and ugly get
deleted.  Just the other day there was info and it seems to be more positive.  Like any MT job, some love it, some hate it.  But, having been employed there, the bad parts are/were true.   The changes sound great but not great enough to make me change my mind about working for them.  I do say she pays well for the area.  She is one of the rare business owners who actually started out as an MT..I think that makes a big difference in pay.
Don't know about Maine
but here in Northeast Alabama we do actually have an overpopulation.  However, I agree the state can come up with some ridiculous laws regarding hunting.  We used to raise cattle.  There were as many deer as cattle on our farm.  We were constantly having to repair fencing, not to mention what they did to our gardens, etc.  Last year my husband hit a deer with his car on his way home from work.  State Farm said they had handled more deer claims this year than ever before.  Also, most of the hunters I know either eat the meat themselves, or give it to someone who wants it.  By the way, my husband is a member of the NRA, but the NRA not only fights gun control, but promotes gun safety and responsibility. I am not flaming. You have a right to your opinion. Guns are dangerous in the wrong hands.  I don't love guns, but I feel they have their place.  There is sometimes only one deputy patrolling our whole county at night.  If we have a problem, we are on our own.  I feel like guns are a necessary evil where I live.  My husband once held some young men at gun point who my 75-year-old neighbor caught stealing her grandson's ATV (the grandson was in Iraq).  Of course he did not shoot anyone, but he did hold them until the deputies could get there- 45 minutes later.

Going to Maine.
I am originally from Bangor, Maine, and my family has a cabin on Lake Sebec.  My mom, dad, sister, son, and I went for 10 days last year and we are going again this year.  It's really great to go and see all of my family.  I have a very large family up there and since they are 1000 miles away, I don't get to see them very often.  Can't wait to go, although the drive up and back is a looooong one!
$2.29 in Central Maine

Casco Bay TR in Maine
I live in Maine and have not heard of them. They must be fairly new or changed their name from something else.
Bangor, Maine

They're in Maine. :-)
.
I thought so. There is an MT company in Maine using it also. nm

re: a canadian MT who lives next to MAINE
I have a MT company from portland, Maine who w ants me to work for them as an IC. They offered me 7 cents per line american. WHat a freakin joke!!

I wont work for under 12 cents per line and I have been out of it for awhile (6 years!!).

See ya!!
Any one know of Casco Bay Transcription in Maine?
I would like to hear from anyone who works for this company.   Do they pay decent?  Are they good to work for?   Thank you.
She's pretty - like a Maine Coon? (sm)
I bet she gets into all sorts of hilarious mischief. I like watching cats on Funniest Home Videos. Just saw the one where the toddler was gently poking at the cat who was sitting in a chair. She suddenly had enough, so she stood on her back feet and whopped his head repeatedly with those lightening fast paws. Kid didn't know what happened, just looked at the camera like, What the ??

Love it! It gets dark in Maine in Dec. by 4 p.m.

I hate standard time though.  They can leave it as it is now and eliminate going back to standard time in the fall as far as I'm concerned.  The clocks always go back right before Halloween too so the little ghosts and goblins have to trick or treat in the dark.

It does mess things up a bit changing over though.  Last night my kids were all hungry and I said, "Oh for goodness sakes it's only . . . .. ALMOST SEVEN??"

Oops. . . . "hello, Dominos?"  :)

Ayuh and if you don't like the weathah in Maine. . . .

wait a minute, it'll change.

We went to Maine a couple of years ago and it
was a MAJOR disappointment.   It was nothing at all like you see on TV.   We were in southern ME and people didn't keep up their yards, no one had a single flower in their yard, although there were a couple of hanging baskets and people were not very friendly.  Went to Portland and couldn't get out of there fast enough.  Everyone we met was rude and the place was just so dirty looking.
Here are some more - Maine Medical Center, sm
Fairview Health System, Gwinnett Medical Center, Atlanta, Piedmont Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess, Charlston Medical Center, West Virginia, Pacific California Hospital, UMass hospital, Marin General Hospital, California, New England Baptist, and the list goes on and on and on.
never mind, found it - maine
not the one i worked for.
Eastern Maine Medical Center
I miss working with other people. I miss having a QA person or a supervisor I know and can go talk to. I miss the hospital gossip and hearing about people's grandkids. Sigh. I left them to work at home figuring it would be all that. But it's not. Sigh....
Come to Maine in February, you'll cool off :)

However, it has been soooooo hot here for a month.  I'm not just talking heat, we get 95 degrees with 86% humidity and even the kitchen floor is sticky under your feet. And that's with the AC on, choking in the background.  The humidity makes everything sticky.  115 degrees of dry heat is like oven heat.  95 degrees of humid heat is like a sauna and you feel as if you're sucking in water when you breathe.

But February. . . .nice and cool.  20 below 2 weeks in a row.  A good day might go up to 2 (that's degrees).  In February we can't wait for the hot humid weather.  In July we can't wait for snow, but not for February though, more like December when it's a nice 20 above.

Love it! Maine's motto should be "Freezeyourbuttoffland"

In case anyone missed it, there is a woman from Maine, sm

Her name is Cathi Lee. Her success story hit our tiny local newspaper one day and she has since been on Today, Good Morning America and in People Magazine.

If you Google her name and weight loss, you can see some articles about her.

I'm too technologically inept to be able to post anything here. I do know that there is a video on WMTW.com of her story.

She was 500 lbs. and lost 330 lbs. in 3 years without fad diets, pills or surgery. She just finally set her mind to it, did a lot of research and now at 48, she is a third of the size she was.

One of her main things was walking and I totally agree with that. I don't care if it's zero out, I still walk. I left my inhouse job 2 years ago and I've LOST 25 lbs. I have time to walk and I make myself do it unless it's pouring rain.

I also do not buy anything that I will eat for junk food, especially "desk food." Do not buy anything that you can easily snack on at your desk. Big mistake. I used to have a desk drawer of "comfort" snacks at my inhouse job and would snack all day.

Another thing is water. Not in the form of 6 cups of coffee. Just plain water and lots of it. NO SODA! Even diet soda will cause fluid retention. Keep a diet soda as a "treat" for the end of your work shift before you go walking. :)

Good luck!

Teeny town in Maine. I never even thought . . .sm

That this may not be the best thing to do if you live in a city or something.

We have virtually no crime rate unless the juveniles are bored and smash a pumpkin or something. We don't lock our doors and leave the keys in the car.  It's a little tiny neighborhood with the 100 x 100 lots and everyone knows everyone by name.

Some customers leave paper money in envelopes clipped to their mailboxes right out in plain view and nobody has ever taken any.

There are neighborhoods in our nearest city that I wouldn't dream of doing this in.

So it's probably not for everyone.

I found my notes--- Olympus DS-2300--$172 at Abe's of Maine - sm
this is basically the direct replacement for the DS-300, only difference is the looks adn it has a removable memory card, other than that pretty much the same; the other comparable unit is the DS-2--it goes for about $105, a little more limiting in its features but still a good recorder. Check out Pricegrabber.com, great for shopping around.
Hinting spring in Central Maine 40ish.
We're getting there!
I love Maine! Ever been to the Cliff House in Ogunquit?
The spa is the best!

Well I think the part you mention in NH and in Maine Acadia and Bar Harbor. Not sure what else there
is that I should see. I expect Portsmouth NH would be nice.

Unlimited long distance in Maine. Please see message.
Hi all! There was a thread not far down on this board about unlimited long distance, and a few companies were mentioned, like Verizon, etc. I found out today that not all of these services are offered in Maine, where I live.
Does anyone know of any unlimited long distance services at reasonable prices in Maine?
ALSO, I know we have AT&T unlimited long distance here in Maine. Does anyone know if AT&T is one of the "good" companies? That is, can I use a C-phone with them and not be penalized?
Thanks so much for any help anyone can give!
You are in Maine, right Hayseed? I am in Indiana, and I totally agree SM
with you. It has been bitterly cold the past week with snow most every day, including today. I am glad I dont have to go out in it.

I get frustrated over the same issues as other MTs, but I just do what you said, walk away and try to keep a good attitude.
Two points

According to the BOS:

1.  You are supposed to substitute mL for cc.

2.  When quanity and unit of measure immediately follow a heading such as estimated blood loss, use numerals.

two points
what is a sentence ends and the next sentence starts with...
80% how do you do that?
Just a few points

Okay...here goes...

So, currently I work in-house at my local hospital.  (Probably shouldn't mention this cuz it's rude, but just trying to give accurate information)..I make 16.47 an hour, plus benefits.  I love my job and it is supporting me and my husband (who is in college at the time...graduating in JUNE!!!)...So, it's worth it.  However, I have to deal with a LOT of crap from the other MTs in-house.  Lots of bitterness, competitiveness, bi*chiness, etc.  I am dealing with it because I know I am not going to do this forever.  Which brings me to my next point:

Don't stay in this job for a long time!!!  You won't go anywhere with it, if anything you will probably get laid off due to outsourcing.  I, myself, am starting school for medical coding.  I will be done with school ($2000) in June and then get started in my new career.  If have been a medical Transcriptionist for 6 years and have done everything from psychiatric to internal medicine to sleep studies as an IC (and it's not worth being and IC in my opinion because of all the taxes you have to pay...big bucks) and my best job yet has been working in-house at my current job.  However, like I said, MTing is not going to get you anywhere fast.  If you want a job that takes you to the next level, go into coding.  There are a lot more career opportunities out there and you can eventually work from home being a coder as well.

If I had to do it over I would have gone straight into coding (except for the fact that I got a lot of medical experience working as an MT).  Good luck to all of you who decide to stick with MTing, but I don't think it will reward you in the future.  I believe it is a dying profession and we all need to move on while the opportunity is here.

I pray for all of us to be able to support ourselves and our family!  I know it's tough out there and we all are struggling to make end's meat.  Just keep on keepin on and we'll all make it through some how.

Points well taken, thank you.
Your points are well taken. I was being a bit vague in what I was actually thinking - there are times on this board that things turn really nasty and hateful, and some of the MTs who are on this board appear to turn on each other, squabble about meaningless points. I really didn't want to encourage a hate-fest against anything, that's all. I think that is indeed unproductive.

BUT, you are right... we can't just be all happy we want fair pay and expect things to change or that we will be heard. We do have to have a stance and a mission and goals. After posting, I did a search here on AHDI and found that I'm hardly the only MT who feels this way, and saw some really great posts back in Sept 2008.

And, I do agree, there are times when it pays to be against smoething (and risk appearing "negative").

So, where do we go from here? Most of these threads seem to die out... and maybe this one will too. I'm hoping it won't, but I really don't have a clue where to go from.

My thought is to brainstorm and continue this dialogue - but I'm not sure MT Stars is the correct venue?

What does anyone think about an email list - that would mean using our real names and emails - to interact off of this forum. I may be way off here - if so, please, opinions welcome! I am not sure going on and on about it here is the momentum that is needed... nor am I sure talking about it on an email list is either, but it's the only idea I have. I don't have the knowledge or time to create a website forum for a group to form via that method.

Maybe this will all sputter out after we all vent again here, I dunno, but I really hope not. Someone mentioned to me today it may well be too late, that trying to organize could push VR and offshoring even faster... I don't want to believe that.

I have a ton of ideas and thoughts and have seen so many good points and posts about how AHDI has hurt U.S. MTs.

We need to band together.

So. From here I make the suggestion that anyone interested in participating in an email list (where we can send a group email by hitting reply all and sharing our thoughts and hope and ideas for a mission and how to get something organized) write to me via email.

I'm not interested in being a leader of this per se, but I am willing and motivated to try as best I can to get some sort of ball rolling.

Let's do this?! I hope the MTs who were posting about this way before I did, back in 2008, will reply too.

Tech Support, your thoughts are exactly what I am envisioning us doing on an email list. Let me know what you think of this and if you want to participate. Thank you for responding so thoughtfully.

Any other ideas, please!

I agree with you on several points

That is, if you have a reputable daycare that is organized with caring people educated in childhood development. My neice was recently changed from a nursery (2 yrs old) because she was found lying on the floor in a corner at the nursery by her mother who came to pick her up at 5:15 p.m.. She had a 103 degree fever, and no one had bothered to call my sister about it. Anyone knowing that child would know she would have to be sick to be lying around when other kids are present. The new nursery is the different in night and day. She gets a report every day from what the child eats to even how many times a day she poops. It's wonderful and the child's attitude when she gets home... a world of difference. My sister thought she had a caring daycare, until she moved. Now she knows what one is really like. To all who have to put children in daycare, KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON IN YOURS!

Also, you second point, the shyness... I was also raised at home by my mother and never put in daycare and I was "painfully" shy when I got to school. I had a hard time throughout my school years because of it. Now as an adult, I don't think there is anything holding me back, but I had to work hard to get out of the shyness. I think because I was at home, I didn't know other kids but they knew each other and I never seemed to fit in.

great points...sm
You've really given me a lot to think about this early Thursday mornin'...thanks! You're right, though. A lot of the issues you bring up, I have NEVER thought of.  Wow, pretty eye opening post! It's about time something worth reading was posted...
Here's some points to ponder....sm

1.  You can go ahead and cash the checks you received and it 's guaranteed money.

2.  You can wait and join the class action suit if you haven't and not cash the check; however, remember that in class action lawsuits the only true winners are the lawyers.  They end up getting most of the money in the end and generally the plaintiffs end up with a very small amount.  It irks me to see things like class action suits that results in the attorneys receiving millions of dollars in legal fees and the plaintiffs end up with less than  $100 because the legal fees ate the money available up.   Look at people who sue insurance companies over automobile accidents for example.  Say an attorney gets them $500,000 - well the attorney gets $250,000 for legal fees and the injured party receives $250,000 - and in situations where they receive large monies it's generally because the person is going to have permanent health problems related to the accident that future insurance companies will exclude paying for.   $250,000 isn't a lot of money if you have an injury that will cause chronic problems throughout your life.

3.  Remember that if you do join the suit that this will probably be tied up in court for years so don't expect a quick settlement if they do decide to settle.  Agreeing to settle a case outside of court doesn't mean the defendant is guilty - sometimes it's cheaper to settle out than to continue racking up costs associated with the lawsuit.

As a note I don't work for MQ - I've just been out there in the legal world to see very commonly that what people think will happen isn't what happens in the long run.  The best you'll get is checks for any amount you weren't paid properly and possibly some interest, but don't expect to get a truckload of cash because they messed up your paychecks.  Instead if you wait on the lawsuit then you may end up having to share the back wages with the attorneys.

You made several of my points..
With hard work and encouragement, the helping hand from the government helped produce productive citizens.  You had the advantage at least of an intact family.  Think of a poor baby born to an uneduated teenager mother with no father.  Without a lot of hard work and self determination, no amount of money from the govt. is going to end that vicious cycle.
