a product called Phone Tools by BVRP. It functions as both a fax and answering machine. I've been using it for >5 years now and have never had any problems.

Download Express Scribe, it's free, when you download the voice files you will listen to....
them in Express Scribe and you can set your footpedal up. I forget where the downloaded files go, can't remember if you can put them where you want them but I would have to search for them to download to Express Scribe - maybe someone else can tell you how. It is much better than what you are doing.
SM for alternative
It runs up and down with the text sideways on the start menu. Mine says Windows XP Professional.
You can right-click on My Computer, select properties, and a window should pop up that shows your system information.
Here's a better alternative..

My docs just attach the voice file to the email and send it to me. There is no encryption. If you don't want to use email, you could use an FTP site I suppose for a safer transfer...

Not sure about that but the program, Switch, can change one audio file into any other type of audio file to play on whatever player you want to use. I love it. It has a free demo.

I thought it might be an alternative to having to rename WP 5.1 documents with .doc extension if they could be loaded on Google docs. I have not researched it extensively, either.

If your computer is about to bite the dust, if you have ANY computer geek friends who can build you a computer, ask them to do so. My husband always rebuilds and updates my computer. The cost for parts is about the same as the "sale" price on new computers and the advantage is that you can have it custom-built to your specifications.
Even if you have to go to a computer shop to have a computer built, it is still less expensive in the long run. Initially it may cost $100 or more than that "sale" computer, but you won't run into problems like being forced to have Vista as your OS and trying to retrofit everything.
We have had a computer since about 1990 and, besides our very first, DOS-based computer, we have only bought two "brand new" computers. One was when Windows first came out, and the second was when I started working at home and needed my own computer. At that time, Windows 95 had been out for a couple of years and most of the bugs had been worked out, so we took the plunge and bought a new one. Since then, we have simply updated and upgraded, including adding a new hard drive, new motherboard, sound/video cards, flat screen monitor....
Just wanted to show you can get a "new" computer without buying a "brand-new" computer. If you see what I mean.....

Has anyone tried the 'shared work' layoff alternative
plan? I know they have this in New York state and actually know someone whose employer does this. The employer must participate but you can always ask about it. There are very specific requirements but it seems if your company does not pay down time, wouldn't it be to their benefit also to keep good MTs this way?
Easy free alternative to FTP for uploading lots of files?
I currently have a temp account that wants to send me a large # of files. I have tried to set them up with a free FTP utility but she is having trouble using it. For some reason she can receive files from me fine but cannot upload them from her computer, and I am stumped as to why this would be. So I am wondering if there is an alternative out there to FTP that is both easy and free (or low-cost). She's willing to FedEx them to me on CD if all else fails but any suggestions would be helpful! Docs, like us, have busy family lives. I found that after Hannukah and Christmas (or sometimes with a break from family stuff) they "catch up" on dictation. Hopefully, this is what still happens. I have a son who is a professional and he likes to go in on Christmas Eve morning because it's so "slow" that he can get a lot of paperwork done. So hang in. Another aspect of today's world is that docs are carrying laptops now as is my family PCP and they are all doing their own notes. I think it's a "wait and see" thing, the world is changing and hopefully there is a survival tool for us somewhere. We are all being replaced by technology, sadly. Only time will tell. I was told several years ago that I should go into "scoping" which is kind of like editing, etc., you go into public stenographers machine gibberish and make sense out of it, kind of like making sense out of what comes back from India. I was offered this but refused to clean up someone else's "mess." Everyone should be thinking of alternative ways to get by, it's never easy. It's sad, as I have put a lot of time and $$$ into a profession that doesn't appreciate my knowledge. From your posts, Blondie, you have a good heart. I hope things get better for you. Try to have a happy holiday. How did you make out with those dogs you took in? Did the owner take them back or at least pay you? This may be an alternative few extra bucks for you. You seem to be an animal lover and a caring person.I don't live near you, but I would rather leave my Golden with you than some kennels around here. Thus, I do not go away if I can't take my dog. Hope things pick up for you work-wise.

Easy backup file transfer alternative for non-tech-savvy client
Hello all,
I have a new client who is not tech-savvy at all. She lost her Transcriptionist and transcriptions are backing up. She is so desperate she is willing to try digital with me. (yay) I hope everything with the FTP setup goes easily for her, but if for some unforseeable reason we cannot get it to work, I was wondering if someone here could recommend an easy alternative, if only to get the first few dictations to me while we work out the FTP. She is incredibly frustrated and on edge at the moment, so anything to ease this transition would be a lifesaver!

I got a Brother fax machine several years ago at Office Depot for around $80 or so. I later got an HP all-in-one in 2005 at Sam's. I don't remember what it cost, but it's worth it if you'll be faxing regularly. Some of your clients may prefer a scanned version.
You could also compare on-line fax capabilities, which seems to be more current, for obvious reasons. I can't remember the details, but I've heard it advertised on talk radio.
Just a thought, especially if you'll be doing this regularly. Places like the UPS Store, etc. charge a good bit to fax, not to mention the inconvenience of leaving the house to do it.

Help! I am trying to get started transcribing at home and I have work to do but I need advice on what type of transcribing phone to purchase. I have been instructed by my current employer to by a cphone that dials into an automated system to retreive my work. Please, any advice or if anyone has one for sale. The cheaper the better or I will buy used. Thanks. 
It is normal to have to purchase your own
provide the PC. Some will provide the foot pedal if you do not have what is required. Some companies give you the option of renting their equipment. It all depends on the company, but yes you will have to have your own resource books.
Anything you purchase for your transcription
You might want to check out some of the earlier posts here as the tax issues have been discussed. You would probably gain information in that respect. Also, you might want to have an accountant/tax preparer for your first year. Some say, you can copy the next year from that first year, but I personally believe in having my taxes prepared for me as these guys are up on things, ya' know. Most definitely though you will want to get your own freestanding PC because down the road you may want to gain some of your own accounts, so you will need that. You will be fine. Some of these people act like you out to take their job or something??? Go figure. There is always one bad apple in the bunch, right? I learned that in grade school. Best wishes in your endeavors....

if you use your debit card for gas purchase (SM)
make sure you realize that some companies (Shell is really really bad to do this) will reserve extra funds on your debit card until the transaction completes and releases those funds 24-72 hours later. With Shell, it is $75 over your purchase. I nearly fainted when I realized what was happening. You can go on MSN Money and find a few articles on this -- gas companies reserving funds on your debit card.
Be aware before you purchase online sm
I've never ordered any of my pets' meds online but my friend has. One of her dogs was found to have heart worms and the guarantee was not honored because the product was purchased from a website which does not guarantee its products. I can't remember which site it was; you may want to inquire before you purchase. (She ended up paying $700 for treatment.)

from Stedman's. The title is "The CMT Reveiw Guide." This book was just released last year (2005) and was developed for the current version of the CMT exam. You might also want to consider a CMT Study Group. Contact the nearest chapter of AAMT as they do have CMT Study Groups. I know that the Online Chapter of AAMT is about to start a study group that will complete in time to take the CMT in the end of July/begining of August. buy the CD. If you purchase the version that is already loaded on your computer you will never be able to recover that software should your system fail or something happen to your hard drive. If you purchase the CD, you can use that copy on something like three or five computers at your home, and you can reinstall a number of times. Once you run out of installs, you will have to call Microsoft for a new verification number, but if you tell them you only have it on X number of computers at home and you had a bad hard drive, they will give you the verification number so that you can reinstall the program. Otherwise, if you purchase the software from the download that came with your computer, you will not be able to do this - it will be a one-time install only. Ask me how I know *_*

I want to be sure I get good tech support along with my purchase and the original software that should come with the recorders I purchase. (I have "heard" that some company may send their own software with the recorders they sell.)

I just started with a great company that I had to purchase
Docshuttle and waveplayer. I had contact with them throughout the period of waiting for the software to arrive, etc. If you purchased the disk and not just the download, you can return it.
